Duets Aren’t That Bad

3rd of Zi’da, 717

Darcy laughed a little, her breath steaming in the chill night air as they walked out together in companionable fashion.

“Yes well, it’s more of a ‘place to stay’ rather than a ‘bring over guests’ sort of deal at the University. Though, it is cheap and it lets me study without having to travel between Venora and Andaris.” Heels clicking on the cobblestone, the blonde pianist nodded.

“Sure, the tenth break works for me. I’ve got a study period for the first half of tomorrow anyway. I don’t really eat much, so tea is better anyway.” Her smile dropped a tad, feeling keenly that the reevi was wearing off. She would welcome the walk home after seeing Valeria off, cool air freshly gusting against the warmth of her cheeks. At the other blonde’s surprise of her cat-less life thus far, Darcy couldn’t help but shoot her another bright smile.

“I uh...I don’t visit many people. My experiences in the animalistic kingdom consist of nasty guard dogs in clients yards, and one cute little bulldog that loves a good pat. Aside from that, I have nothing. I’m excited to meet your Alena then, by the sounds of it she’s simply delightful.” Shivering, the blonde Venora nodded.

“No, honestly, you’re absolutely right. It’s sarding freezing!” She giggled at the curse word, as though they’d done something awfully wicked under the eyes of the Seven. Rebellious even.

Fates knew however that Darcy was not as innocent as she seemed. Not when it came to colorful language and even more colorful evening activities.

“Does it get this cold in Burhan?” The shorter woman asked conversationally, looking at the ground as they moved quickly across the uneven paving, ensuring she didn’t trip and break an ankle.

“Venora I don’t think ever feels quite this cold. It’s like all the plants and flowers hold the trial’s sunlight for the evenings. Even when it snows it somehow feels warm.” Her voice took on a slightly nostalgic tone, a pang of homesickness capturing her heart. She really needed Caius, she needed to know where he was. Why he left.

She needed someone.

Vaguely, the gnawing sense of fear was creeping back on her. The shadows were more ominous, even in Valeria’s company. Unconsciously Darcy walked a little closer to the singer, her eyes darting to the poorly lit alleyways as they moved along.

“I uh...are we close?” She asked softly, pulling the cloak closer around her with another shiver.

The Burhan let out a giggle. Her own home afforded a little more than simply a place for her to sleep. It wasn't really good for entertaining but that had never stopped her. The young woman had had many a visitor to her humble abode although such occasions when she 'entertained', they tended to be one-time only affairs. Literally.

"I understand that but one other person isn't too much trouble, I find, provided that they aren't expecting ample space and endless source of entertainment," she remarked. "Guests plural would always be an issue, I imagine, but it's worth it if it makes expenses more manageable. Obviously, you have to choose practicality over sociability."

The noblewoman hugged herself, wondering why it was quite this cold so early in the season. It hardly seemed right for such a thing to be possible, especially given that there was no sign of any snow. She was willing to forgive many things if the white stuff was on the ground. At least snowfall would provide a reasonable excuse for the unpleasant nip in the air but the weather didn't have the decency to do such a thing. Besides, the flurries were pretty, even if they could be a nuisance at times. However, they were rather close to the coast and as such snow wasn't keen to fall in the first place and if it did come, the salt in the air and the heat from the water ensured that it didn't stick well.

"Tea is all well and good but you still have to eat, you know," she commented goodnaturedly. "You'd better get something substantial into you in the morning, young lady!" she scolded teasingly, a slight smirk taking away any weight of seriousness from her words.

Her smile broadened as her companion talked about the dogs that she knew and commented that she was excited to meet Alena. If she hadn't already liked the Venora, she would have now. Anyone who talked about her cat in such terms, especially when she hadn't met her, was a keeper. It seemed a funny coincidence that she too knew a friendly pug. Of course, Valeria hadn't seen said pug for quite some time, not since before Caius had departed for Viden. It had been quite some time since she'd seen her friend and she wondered idly if she should find out his details from Ivy so she could write to him. She'd have to remember to do so when she next saw the Gawyne girl.

They shared a giggle over the illicit pleasure of such casual cursing, the Burhan adding a "Fekking right!" for good measure as she laughed with further mirth, her eyes shining warmly.

When Darcy asked about the climate of her home region, the noblewoman tilted her head to one side, considering the matter. It had been a few arcs since she'd wintered in Burhan but she thought that it was colder in some ways than Andaris and it probably was nothing like Venora.

"It's quite cold, yes. We get a fair bit of snow and ice. We don't have sea air or sea warmth to take the edge off the chill but we do have quite a lot of forests; they probably reduce the wind chill factor quite a bit. Still, it wouldn't be the coldest place in Rynmere, that's for certain," she explained, deeming it unnecessary to name Gawyne as harsher because she supposed that it was common knowledge.

Darcy's question made her gaze flicker to her, nodding her head simply. "It's not far now. It might seem a little endless but the housing in Midtown does tend to look very much the same. Still, we'll be there in a bit or so and then you'll know how to find it again in the light, I'm sure," Valeria pointed out, eyeing her feet as she followed the familiar path to her home. True to her word, it wasn't long before they reached the front of the charming little house, the flowers in the windowboxes rather sad in appearance due to the blonde's negligence and the cool air. The Burhan eyed them thoughtfully, considering stepping in to fetch a cup for water but deciding against it. What was the point in the Cold Cycle? Even if she watered the plants, the frost would soon choke the life from them.

"Well, this is me!" she announced, patting her hair in a pre-occupied way as she hovered before her front door, unsure how to give her goodbyes. Unlocking her door, she left the key in the lock and offered Darcy a friendly smile, her irises shifting to that pleasant near gold hue as she regarded the pretty Venora. They'd dispensed with a great deal of formality and so the blonde considered it safe to view certain actions as being more acceptable than normal. As such, she felt content in her decision to wrap the other woman in a sudden loose embrace, leaning forward fleetingly to hug her and giving her a very chaste peck before she drew back, leaving the soft impression of her lips on her ivory cheek.

"I'll see you in the morning, Darcy," she said by way of parting before she slipped indoors, glad for the warmth of the house and the slight giddiness that remained with her after her time with the woman.

Duets Aren’t That Bad

3rd of Zi’da, 717

Darcyanna chuckled at Valeria’s gentle scalding, waving her hand as though to say ‘yes, yes’, knowing full well she would eat...eventually. Huddling closer to the Burhan, the Venora glanced at the shadows as she spoke about the weather back home, listening and also watching.

“No, I’ve heard the Gawyne’s hold the record for the coldest that I am aware of. Apparently they can’t even travel some some seasons because of it. Must be frustrating to be trapped in a city with no way out.” Looking back at Valeria, the blonde smiled a little, embarrassed that she was clearly rushing the woman but not ready to go into reasons for her paranoia.

As quickly as she’d had the thought though, they had arrived. Darcy looked at the quaint house, before turning to glance up and down the street to get her bearings. It would be easy enough to find her way back here on the morrow. Turning back, the pianist blinked in surprise as a warm pair of feminine arms wrapped lightly around her, blushing as the woman’s lips brushed her cheek.

Was that a Burhan thing?

“Oh I uh...yes. Yes, morning then! Good evening Valeria.” She stammered awkwardly, stepping back as the blonde disappeared inside and pressing a fingertip to her cheek. Was she supposed to do that in return?

Pulling the hood up on her cloak, Darcyanna turned and walked quickly back home, glancing over her shoulder all the way back, mulling over exactly how she should greet the Lady when they met tomorrow.

How...confusing.

Once home, the blonde stopped in to walk and check on Smudge, her heart sinking when she saw Caius was still missing. Four trials tomorrow, and naught a word to even let her know where he was or if he was okay. Making her way home she locked the door and drew the curtains, before delving into the sweet nothingness of the reevi on her bedside table.

Your review is ready!
Oh, V, I see you creepin' while Caius is away. Don't think I didn't already stalk this thread, because I did. Darcy took it all so well, though. Is this a Burhan thing? LOL. Hilarious. Still, you both wrote a lovely performance despite all of the, uh, surprises.
