A Shipment to Hijack

Young Peleus
Gurgling the cold, red waters with each panting breath, the young lad made his way towards the shore of the river. Muck and reeds and slimy things passed over his body, but only in scant awareness. The blazing fire of the burning ship smoldered behind him. Fear over took him. Fear so powerful that if he had been dry, he would have been able to smell it. Instead, it was drowned out by good ol' river-water.
Dismayed he felt as a coward pushing forward alone as the flames flickered brilliantly and the screaming faded in the din as he floated down stream. He wanted to cry because he had left Ellen'wyn and Niv. He felt failure blowing up in his chest... or was it the shortness of breath caused by the panicked flight he had taken from the tradegic sinking of the blackpowder shipment?
Nay, it wasn't the former; he had no stake in the shipment. Really, did he have any true stake at all in the lives of Ellen and Niv? No, the answer was no. He had sworn to follow Gangui, but he wasn't responsible for all this. But he couldn't accept the truth...
Was he truly inculpable or was he just making excuses? He had to tell himself to stop thinking. There was more important things at hand.
Rolling up on the shore of the river, he crawled through the mud. A worm. A pawn. An honorable peon at most if he was able to pull himself out of the dirt. Gangui would have felt the need for revenge... but Peleus, nay, he could barely muster the courage the move now. He remained sprawled out as the glorious fire burned in the background.
Slowly the flaming ship floated past his position, ashes covering his body until he couldn't see anymore.
