Lucky... Duncan thought to himself as he cut his way quickly to the front of the masses, glancing over his shoulder briefly to take in the ever thickening crowd, all headed to the gates mere meters behind Duncan as he shoved his way through. People yelled and screamed at him, doing their best to shove him back, but Duncan kept his pace, stumbling but maintaining his balance until he was able to burst onto the street beyond. Duncan slowed for a moment, casting his gaze around, only to have it catch on a green cloak as it whipped around buildings to make his way down the wall. Duncan threw himself forward once more, urging his legs faster as he focused himself on the current task, beyond glad that he'd brought his gladius and crossbow to what was supposed to be a boring political event. Green Cloak tripped, rolling in the snow before bouncing back to his feet, and Duncan grinned widely, pushing himself to the brink of his abilities in order to make the most of the other man's stumble.

"Stop running!" Duncan roared, arms and legs pumping fiercely as he pushed himself harder and faster, narrowing the gap between the cloaked man and himself. "I won't hurt you, promise!" He called, though his words were somewhat betrayed by his snarling smile and snort of laughter. Duncan had missed this, chasing down his mark and feeling the burn of his body as he threw himself into the hunt. He missed the tantalizing promise of violence and bloodshed, the chance to hurt and be hurt i return. A primal growl rolled from him, interrupted by harsh pants as he closed the gap between himself and his prey. Finally close enough Duncan swung out, wrapping a muscled arm around the bowman's neck and jerking him backwards, the sudden change in momentum causing them both to loose balance, falling back in a tangled, struggling pile into the snow.

Yana’s success at barging through the crowds was not without its challenges. The Videnese were not accustomed to panic, and disorder and chaos was rife. The sword was a clever choice and the Agent, who was unarmed and now wide-eyed at the preparation and professionalism of his unlikely companion, nodded and allowed the female to take the lead. The crowds, for the most part, divided to allow the two followers through. A few remained in the way, but they were easy enough to shove aside without further harm being done to the citizens, should Yana feel that way inclined. A bit or two later, they managed to reach the front of the bottleneck and pass through the narrow archway.

I know a shortcut!” The Agent shouted to be heard over the general panic of those moving around them as the pass through and he grabbed the secret yludih’s arm. “They went that way, we’ll go this way! Cut him off!” If Yana agreed, the two ran. Up stairs, down stairs, left and right and through narrow corridors of ice, Yana was privy to some secret tunnels of Viden. It did not occur to the Agent what his companion would do with the information, only that they had to catch whoever it was.

The pair rounded the final corner just in time to see Duncan tackle the cloaked assassin to the ground. “Stop!” The agent creamed desperately, “We need him alive!” Stumbling forward, with laboured breathing, he kept his hand raised. He turned to his new ally at the same time, “You, you have a sword, what else have you got? Do you have anything to restrain him with?

The other potential attacker was locked in combat still with someone who should, if there was any sense to the matter, probably be helping him. It was a sight to see for the Agents, who mingled with mixed expressions of awe and suspicion. A good number had left, hearing Verity’s pleas and answering them. Then, something incredible happened - as Audrae’s gift failed her daughter, Yvithia’s did not. The new Xyph had not yet begun to completely understand her new powers, much less use them… but the stress and strain caused something to snap. She found herself unwittingly - and possibly unwillingly - sharing flashes of images with the assassin as they scrambled on the snowy ground.

Eventually, Linika gained the upper hand, and onlookers finally surged into action when they saw her draw a blade. Some moved to pin the attacker, others to secure Linika. But they were too slow, when another appeared - seemingly out of thin air - sword drawn and half way through a swing. The swing met it’s target, and half-sliced, half-pieced the back of the assassin’s neck. The Agents, who by now were so far out of their own depth, froze in horror. Then two acted, leaving one on Linika and bundling towards the new threat. Even if this man had helped, confusion caused people to do terrible things. The hood fell and the identity of the assassin was there for everyone to see. Not a ‘him’, a ‘her’.
Human, with no immediately obvious marking indicating who she was.

Edalene’s screaming did nothing to summon her brother, but the girl knew that now was not the time to be selfish, with others suffering too. The Delegate Caeli’s breathing was haggard, though the bleeding was stemmed, thanks to her father’s quick thinking. It was a deep wound, but no vital organs had been pierced - that much was obvious from the site of the damage. “I-” The Chancellor, an old man now, and evidently in shock, struggled to find the words. “I think she’s going to be alright. I’ll have her moved to the Infirmary soon, but for now I need to keep her warm. Anything warm and dry… cloaks, blankets, maybe on the ships? I don’t know…” he had not looked up once, eyes constantly on his daughter’s, the white eyes suddenly looking even more unnerving than normal.

Aeodan, by this point, was mere feet away from his twin, though the two were too caught up in the situation to have noticed each other yet. As he approached Verity, the other Delegate felt the familiar awareness of another Xyph and glances up in relief. He was disappointed to find a green cripple crouched next to him, and brushed lightly at the edge of the boy’s mind. No knowledge at all. Feck. He wasn’t even from Viden, he couldn’t source help. “No, look, I need-” what did he need?

The eídisi glanced down at Isla. He could feel her pulse through his hands as he tried to stem the blood. The wound wasn’t gushing as it had before, but the reason for that became evident - Isla was dying. Verity shook his head, growling in fury. “Yes, go,” he spoke directly to the boy’s mind; if Isla had any awareness, he did not want her to know that she was doomed. They needed a miracle.

Edalene glanced to Isla, lying near to Caeli, and her heart sunk. With the knowledge of someone who had seen Death and survived, Edalene knew that the diplomat would die. And she doubted that Vri would give her a chance to return as she did. Edalene swallowed, and then looked back to Caeli.

The Chancellor's words took a moment to sink in, but she found herself nodding. "She'll be okay," Edalene murmured, eager to affirm the Chancellor's belief. "You're right, we need to stabilise her." It was almost impossible to focus, to keep her mind on the woman before her, when through their link Edalene could feel the anxiety and fear of her twin.

"Blankets, yes, I can go get some." Edalene stood. She could do nothing here, without any medical knowledge. But she could make sure that Caeli was warm until help could come to her. Quickly, Edalene shed her cloak. Now there was only a thin green dress between her and Viden's cold, but she could handle a few bits of cold - Caeli, with her blood loss, could not. "Here," she said, draping it over her, before standing - already freezing. "I'll be back soon."

Edalene turned, ready to leap off the dais and battle the crowd again, but she saw him - Aeodan was there, crouched over Isla. With a sob of relief, Edalene hurtled across the dais. Others would look up, confused - Aeodan was not the injured one! But they, none of them, had been through what the twins had.

Edalene reached her brother, and threw her hands around him. "Gods, I thought - fuck." Her voice was muffled in his hair, and desperately she pressed her lips to his in a fierce kiss before pulling away just as quickly. "I have to get blankets - for Caeli. Stay safe," and it was a command. Nothing could happen to Aeodan. Nothing. "I'll be back in a moment."

With a final kiss to his forehead, Edalene drew on her Shirvain strength, and darted into the crowd. She shoved people out of the way as she headed for the docks, mindless of their shouts of indignance. The only thoughts in her mind were - blankets, back to Caeli, and back to Aeodan.

Shortly she made it through to the docks. She knew there'd be bruises over her body where elbows and knees had hit her, but she paid no mind. She'd had worse, and the SongStone seemed to hum warmly in her belly in agreement. Darting onto the ship she first saw, she was lucky enough to see a collection of blankets on deck, clearly to help sailors as they came into freezing Viden. She collected three in her arms.

It took her longer, encumbered as she was, but she came back to the dais with all three blankets. "Here," she panted, and folded all three over Caeli. "Will this help?" And yet her mind was distracted as she cast about a glance for Aeodan.

Yana was glad that she was right in her decision to use intimidation rather than just force her way through. The crowd would have opposed her if she had tried, forming a wall. Now though, be it because of the sword or anything else, they did part before her and her temporary companion, allowing them to pass without hindering too much. Some seemingly were oblivious as to what was going on, remaining in their spot, though they were easily shoved aside firmly. Yana wasn’t unnecessarily violent, but neither was she gentle. She was a professional after all, and it showed in her actions.

Before too long the two of them had managed to get through the gate, leaving the crowd of people behind. There, the Videnese Agent took charge once again, pulling at the Yludih’s arm and shouting something about a shortcut. Yana nodded briefly. “Lead the way,” she said, letting the man get in front of her so she could follow him. He led her through a system of tunnels, some known to the public, open for all, but some were obscure and hidden. Yana’s interest was piqued –honestly just about anything she did not yet know about would do—and she took care to memorize the location of these secret tunnels and the locations they led to. This was quickly turning into a productive activity indeed. Not that the Yludih had any malicious intent, mind, she merely figured that she could use them in case of emergency.

Corners were rounded in quick succession, and the pair found themselves in the exact position where the assassin was at the moment. Yana was truly impressed. Not only had they managed to get the target back in their sights, but they would have been close enough to catch up, if that had been necessary. Fortunately for the two of them, another pursuer had done their work for them already, having tackled the perpetrator, now wrestling them in the snow. Blows were exchanged, damage was taken, and the Agent cried for their ally to stop. Yana disagreed.

“Keep him down by any means necessary,” she ordered instead, “Killing him excluded!” As far as she was concerned, they needn’t be gentle at all. A few broken limbs would not hurt their cause. Neither would an unconscious target. They only needed to catch him alive so they could interrogate him, but what good was not killing an assassin if it gave them an opportunity to escape? They would be discouraged from fleeing if their knee was busted.

“As a matter of fact, I do,” Yana spoke, a tiny grin showing, “Good thing I like being prepared.” Perhaps all those arcs in the military had conditioned her to always expect combat situations. Especially at events such as these. She quickly pulled the Climber Vine bindings out of a pocket, and took a moment to recall what that dreadfully insufferable Naer had told her last season. Salt water, if memory served --which it did. With a few steps she approached the now pinned down assassin, and knelt beside them and the man keeping them in place. She reached for the assassin’s wrists, gripping them tightly, and twisting them behind the back of the suspect, one over the other. Then she told the Agent to keep them in place for a bit, while she removed the wrapper from the binding.

Just as she had been told, the vine itself was nicely stretchy and flexible; wrapping it around the wrists of the assassin was no problem whatsoever. She twisted the leftover ends around each other –there was too little vine left for a knot—and withdrew her hands to study her handiwork for a trill. To actually restrain the assassin she’d need some salt water though, of which enough was pouring from the pores of the Agent and the other man. She wasn’t sure if Yludih sweat was going to do the trick, so she decided not to use hers.

“Excuse me,” she said, reaching out for the human man’s forehead, wiping some sweat from his brow, then smearing it on the vine, which immediately began to shrink and tighten. Linika had said its strength was comparable to steel, in which case the assassin would not be removing these bonds any time soon. She turned back to the Agent then. “There you go, all tied up. Where do we take our prisoner now?”

The human male also got some of Yana’s attention though. A poor leader she’d be if she did not recognize and accept the role he’d played in this situation. He’d saved them a whole lot of trouble. She saluted him for a brief moment. “We greatly appreciate your assistance in this matter, mister…?” She paused momentarily, the infliction of her voice –though minimal—making it a question in regards to his name. After the brief pause, she continued: “Without you we would have been chasing this criminal down for a while longer. You have my thanks.”

he step was easily taken, the magic carried him the rest of the distance between the point where his foot left the ground and where it landed back again. The swing was aimed well and the strike executed as best he could. But Sin knew fully well that events never unfolded as planned. Whether the man had seen him or sensed him or simply moved because of something the woman opposite of him did, Sin would never be able to tell. The pommel crashed down on what should have been the person's neck but instead was part of the armor and cloak covering the top of their shoulder.

The full momentum of the swing caused the pommel to bounce of to the side, carrying the strike forward and before Sin could do anything to stop it, he could feel the tip of his blade pierce through skin and flesh, severing several nerves on the way through. The unpleasant vibration of steel carving bone as he cut through the person's spinal cord was clearly felt by the Yludih as he lost control of his attack. Blood spurted out of the half severed neck, splashing Sin's blanket and fur covering and staining the assassin and the ground with the rest of it.

Bleeding out of a neck wound, paralyzed from the neck down, drowning in their own blood and unable to breathe. All at the same time. Sin wasn't quite sure which way of dying he disliked the most as he watched the woman lie on the ground. Nothing about her rang any bells for Sin but then again, he hadn't really spent much time outside of the research institute. He looked from the body to the woman that had been fighting with her. She seemed to be holding her own after having fought off an assassin on her own. Sin turned towards the Agents that had been standing around to tell them things were fine now only to see them heading straight for him.

Sin could understand how his actions might have been misinterpreted by the adrenaline fueled agents. Eídisi weren't know for their crisis response. In fact, Sin was quite sure this was the most upheaval the Videnese had ever seen since the death of Treid. Not that he was very knowledgeable about local events and history. Two reactions came to mind as the Eídisi charged him. Blink away and get out, which would make things difficult for his work and for Saeri, blink back a little, giving him time to explain before they were on him or disarm himself and try to explain why it hadn't been his intention to kill the woman. Sin figured any use of magic would alert them even more so he opted for the latter choice.

The sound of steel on stone as Sin let go of his blade, the blood splattering from his weapon on the streets and the snow while he tried to raise his hands before the agents got to him. "I'm a squire of the-..." Not enough time. With his hands half raised, Sin turned his head away slightly, eyes closed, bracing himself for the inevitable impact of Eídisi agent bodies. Sin didn't have any illusion as to the amount of padding his blanket and furs would provide to lessen the impact of the hard rocks of the street on his body. Hopefully their orders were to arrest people and ask question first before running them through with their weapons of choice.

by Linika
Had Linika been more focused, she might have posed a question to herself, regarding which person involved in the blown capture attempt was the most confused with developments. The Videnese agents were indecisive to the point of only being in the way. Admittedly, they had managed to form a cordon around the knife fight, but their balking attempts at actions only served to give the naer need to hold back with her own, lest she stab one of them by mistake.

The few citizens brave enough to watch, and not run for their quivering lives, were doing nothing but confusing the issue with shouted orders and suggestions that the agents were trying to weed out from the genuine orders they were trying to interpret.

Linika herself was suddenly finding herself staggered not only by ongoing mental demands from distant authorities, but also unexpected flashes of scenery from some other source. If not for the realization of a focus on a distant spot within these flashes, she might have figured it to be a deliberate battle tactic. Most of these flashes of imagery included her own self; and were oriented from such an angle as to confirm that they came from the antagonist she was currently fighting.

Many times she was just about to lunge, or feint, or try to lure the assassin in, only to have her awareness of his position superimposed by the scenery of herself and that which would be seen behind her. Once it even flashed in and out, to return in time to see her adversary revealed to be a female. That really changed nothing to her, however. As a near, she'd always held females to be every bit as formidable as any male.

In short order, this was demonstrated by a wretched failure of a knock-out blow by a man who appeared so suddenly behind the assassin, that Linika initially thought it was just another flash image from her growing Xypha connection. She grit her teeth in frustration as she realized the series of errors it required for the soldier's sword stroke to go so badly awry.

She had just been in the process of luring the assassin toward her, when another Xypha image had confused her vision. The attacker must have seen her eyes 'swim' briefly as Linika tried to discern reality from imagery. The assassin must have decided to capitalize on this instant of the naer's hesitance, by lunging forward from her previous tick's position. The sword's trajectory, having been estimated to contact hilt to head, was now made lethally off-target as a result.

Still, by the time Linika even came to put these details together, she had already launched recriminations against the sword-wielder, who had now dropped the blade and blinked back to no avail. Agents converged on them both. Linika hissed in frustration, knowing that she'd probably now, once again, be assumed to have brought about the "silencing" of one who could identify her as being in on the assassination attempt. For all her battling of this woman, her needless death would reflect badly on the effort she'd made to capture her alive.

"Smart move, moron! Now they'll think we..." she began, hoping to distance herself from whatever accusation was likely to be levied against the swordsman. But it dawned on her then that the images she'd seen flash across her mind may be her best alibi. She raised her knife hand in partial surrender, extending the other to absorb some of the impact the charging agent made against her.

"STOP! Stop. I saw images from the assassin's mind." She shouted, wrestling one-handed just to stay on her feet against the Intelligence agent's grappling. Fury overtook her as the agent forced her down. Once she knew she was not going to be able to stay upright, she instead moved with the momentum, managing to roll the man beneath her and bring her dagger to his throat.

"YOU STUPID SHITHEAD! Didn't you hear what I just said?" she shrieked, barely restraining herself from opening the man's throat to the stones beneath him. She saw more men converging on her now, and tore the air with a howl of rage. She rose to her feet to face them, red-faced in contempt. "Oh, so NOW you're all efficiency in tackling the only people who tried to DO anything. I chased that fucker down and kept her here so the rest of YOU could CATCH UP! And now you're squaring off on ME?"

An arm waved a semi-dismissive flourish in Sintih's direction, "Arrest HIM if you must arrest someone, but I'd hardly figure that to have been anything but an accident. In the meantime, I got flashes of this bitch' awareness of something way back the other way. It was clearly important to her, so maybe it's important to us as well. If you'll stop wasting time with US, we might be able to find out what it is!"

Linika was not aware of the other assassin, so it was entirely possible it was nothing more than the location of the other struggle. But she genuinely thought it might be some rendezvous point for the assassins' team.

The next several breaks found her bound and walked to the IA detention center. She stewed with anger over the apparent ineptitude of the guard and security personnel involved. It had all the earmarks of lazy satisfaction with blaming the naer for it all. But at the back of her mind was the nagging perception that this was a ruse as well.

She'd given more than enough account of her actions to justify what she'd done. And her revelations over the images that had come to her mind ought to have garnered more investigation than anything she saw result from them as they walked her across the scene. She didn't even know if those dignitaries had survived. The withholding of those details only made it seem all the more clear that she would be taking the fall for the catastrophe. After all, who shared privileged information with the enemy?

But why would Yvithia have scarred her with her hateful mark if only to throw her away this way? Something just did not add up. A snort accompanied the thought that Yvithia was going to mark her again. Even as ridiculous as that would be, she could not honestly think of anything more logical to explain her current isolation. She wondered if any of the others, particularly that swordsmen who'd accidentally killed the assassin, were also being held in Detention.

This time though, there was no preliminary term of sensory deprivation. The trials passed with easy referencing of light and dark, she was actually fed with surprisingly good fare and her cot was unexpectedly comfortable. She snickered over the thought of having been given the "Luxury Cell". But her amusement covered an increasing curiosity as to the ultimate purpose of this decent treatment.

That purpose was clarified a few trials later as guards came to her cell door; guards that radiated a no-nonsense competency she had rarely seen thus far. They did not bind her; they simply knew she would not make trouble for them. And they were right. While Linika enjoyed entertaining thoughts of resistance, and overly optimistic hopes of success, her curiosity won out over the disappointing and long-shot result of getting away, but not knowing what was going on.

She was dropped in a rather comfortable seat across the desk from the head of the IA itself, Verity Talius, who began. "Let's dispense with the usual opening rounds of insults to my son, shall we?"

"If you are willing to give it a miss, I guess I could agree to withhold my observations as well, sir." she replied with undisguised smugness.

"Very well. I am not given to disguise my belief that my Queen had made a large mistake marking you. You are unrepentantly belligerent and disruptive to the public peace. You are a focus of quarrelsome incidents and express zero remorse for their frequency. You invite contention and...never mind, I am only restating myself now."

"Awww..." Linika crooned in mock disappointment, "And here, I was about to point that out, and you spoiled it. After all, it was only your son that we were sparing the verbal lashings, as I recall. I was so looking forward to defining the exact level of stupidity your men displayed in dragging me off when I had information to give."

Verity actually lifted just a corner of his mouth in an appreciative smirk. "Well said, for an operative that was denied any insight into what purpose she truly served." There was silence for a moment, his "guest" now registering his use of the past tense of how Yvithia "had" made a large mistake, and his use of the word "operative" in regard to herself. "Yes, perhaps a bit of insight would be useful in defining the exact level of efficacy you provided us....I'm not going too fast for you, am I?"

Her curiosity was now fully piqued, and she sat somewhat forward, "I doubt you are capable of ever going too fast for me, except perhaps in bed. But by all means then, enlighten me."

The venerable eyebrows lifted momentarily during the course of her remarks, culminating in a chuckling shake of the head, "...Unrepentant, indeed..." But he settled back in a pose of eventual victory as he continued. "The fact is we got all the information from you that you had. Did you think that the mind connection I shared that you so wanted to reject worked only one way, agent Linika?"

"I am NOT your agent, Lord Talius!" she spat the title, standing up to find agents seeming to simply appear at her sides. She sat back down at his gesture and the guards withdrew as swiftly as they had appeared.

"Not knowingly, no. But in my experience, the best agent is one that is unaware of this fact. I got a number of impressions from your mind, not the least of which was the location of the vacant levels of the tower you were suspicious of. You were absolutely right about the person hiding there, and we were able to minimize the damages after the initial salvo of arrows, thanks to you. Plus which, the ability for us to play along with the drama of your outrage drew attention far away from where we wanted things kept quiet. In short, you did your job better than we could have hoped."

"Well you may rest assured it will never happen again!" the naer sneered, believing every word to be true. Verity sat before her, his smile undermining this resolve somehow. "I am not your agent and you may trust that I will now be suspicious of being used again."

The self-assured smile the man maintained was infuriating to her, but she nonetheless wanted to hear what he had to say in response. "I do not mean to tease you when I say that even now, rather than walking out in a huff, you stay because you want to know more. I was given a purse to extend to you for your effort, but thought you would consider it an insult on top of how we used you, and refuse it. But I can tell you in all honesty that I got other impressions from you during the incident.

"The first was that you chose to cooperate, even though you knew that your initial mission, of infiltration and sabotage was exposed. This tells me that you seek something to do to make some kind of difference. It is a sad life, for one so capable as you, to be of no account. But that is what awaits you if you reject the offer we have extended. The other impression I got, throughout that incident, was how much you enjoyed it!"

Linika steamed in fury; both at being used and at being so accurately measured. There was nothing incorrect about what Verity said. "I would love to deny that any, and every, word of what you have just said is true...." she began. Her face set in resigned anger at her inability to find words to add. Finding nothing, her voice dropped into a tone of clearly feigned courtesy, "Am I then free to leave, sir?"

The door opened almost of its own accord behind her. "Of course. I look forward to working with you again."

She paused in the door, aching to destroy the very thought of such a turn of events with a profound and caustic retort. In the end, however, she left silently.

I do so enjoy the way you write Yana and her way of being. She's so chilly - she fits right in to the Viden landscape! I'm always impressed with the clarity of your writing, which was evident here. Great writing!

Sintih

Overview

I really enjoy the way you write Sintih - the juxtapositions of his inner thoughts with his actions are really well crafted, and I like them a lot. You play him as thinking a lot - working things through and being very logical and thoughtful in his approach. Very logical and very emotional, all wrapped in one. I like it.
