Re: Into the Unknown (Closed)

Everything felt heavy.

As his work was done, Varlum finally let himself fall, colliding hard into the sands below as the beast became an empty husk. With a small turn in the air then man landed with his front facing the ground below him, a loud grunt of pain leaving him as he bounced off the floor and hit his side, grinding to a halt with pain shooting through his body. Exhaustion ran through his veins as a burning feeling of emptiness sat within him, the nine-foot-tall Ithecal hissing like an injured animal as he forced himself to his knees. Whatever feeling it was he had inside, he hated it. Hated the numbness, the exhaustion. But all of his magic had stopped, which meant he must have hit a limit. A cap of his power, stopping him from going too far.

Varlum carefully gripped his axe and pushed himself to stand, the look of exhaustion being forced away in place of his pride. It was one of the man's biggest downfalls, the inability to show weakness to anyone around him. He'd been stabbed in the leg, kicked across the sand and dropped to the floor - but that didn't matter. Ivorian had taught him one thing about weakness, about the dangers of showing it. When he had let himself be weak at first it had isolated him, his own allies caring little for him in any way. Partially because he broke the uniform military, but more so because he had been a liability - an outcast. There was nothing in Idalos that would let him become that again.

When the voice spoke in his mind the Ithecal kept snarling quietly, one hand clutching his side as the other leaned on the axe. "Let them come" he growled, not phased by the death around him. It was normal for a soldier, to see so many people killed. Even if he wished he could have done better, wished he could have saved more lives, there was no point living in the past. They did their best against an enemy strong enough to wipe a small army and had come out alive. If they hadn't the pile of bodies would have been much bigger, all of Rharne eventually joining it.

Cautiously, Varlum took a small step forward towards Lucas and Lynessa, eyes meeting the two as he gave a small limp and used the axe like a walking cane. A scarred face met them both as he steadied his breath and stood himself up tall. Never before had he seen the two, but at the very least he would remember their faces. Odds were they would remember his too. Most saw the Ithecal and never forgot it, but most hadn't watched him climb atop a giant soldier and take hit after hit before ripping its chest open with brute force. Hell, most hadn't felt the magic he used working, shaking the ground around the beast and hardening it. But clearly, these two weren't most people.

Slowly, his face turned to a small smile, ever so slight but noticeable. "Drinks are on me, some time" the Ithecal growled simply, before slowly walking towards the city of Rharne, his shift thoroughly finished.

Re: Into the Unknown (Closed)

Bewildered and breathing hard, Lynessa leapt away from the hardened remnants of the creature. Her eyes were still trained at its hulking figure, half-expecting for it to return to life. But it didn’t. Whatever fire that had fueled its life had been entirely died out. She turned to nod an acknowledgement at Lucas, noticing the blue glow from him slowly waning.

“What cannot be done alone, must be done together. This was not the first Flameborn to come upon your doorstep, and it will not be the last. Come find us young Wardens and we will aid you in erasing this threat from your lands forever. Faldrun’s doom shall be upon him.”

At that moment she realized the mysterious strength and power slowly seeping out of her skin. The ache from the exertion slowly came to her and she felt almost lightheaded. The gravity of the mysterious voices weighed down on her. It will not be the last.

Lynessa laughed breathlessly – perhaps almost a bit hysterically – at Varlum’s offer. Having a drink… seemed like a mundane thing to do after what happened just now. It felt like a fairytale. What they did only happened in fairytales. A magical, unknown force granting them a mystic power to destroy an undefeatable foe. The priestess was used to more… ordinary missions. Target. Infiltrate. Eliminate. “I’ll take you up on that,” she replied with tired smile as she looked up at him.

As the Ithecal walked away, the young woman was still rooted to the ground, standing in front of the dead Flameborn – a fitting name. Naera approached her slowly, nudging her with her head, perhaps sensing the distraught. All her life… She had sworn to herself that she would end the Aukari’s terror. The plague Faldrun had wrought upon this world. Yet, it had always seemed out of reach. Missions involving Sirothelle and the flame god was reserved for experienced priestesses, unlike her. Alia would bar her

Yet… Ever since the arrival of the Ring and now this… All of it seemed more real. Like need only reach out and she would get burnt.

This was a sign. Things were changing and she needed to do something about it.

While they were deep inside the Stormwastes, there was no denying that she could feel the tug of… something. An indiscernible whisper beckoning her towards northeast, where the Lake Lovalus was. She didn’t know why, but she was absolutely sure that she needed to get there. That whatever answers that had started blooming inside her mind would be answered there.

Lynessa had to force herself to look away, now scanning the horizon for the other survivors. They had all stopped and even though she couldn’t see their faces, she knew they were staring in silence. The news about the creature would grow uncontrollable and the priestess would have to deliver the facts to her superiors as soon as possible – before the panic could spread. As her gaze drifted, a lone woman caught her attention. Fiery hair and bright eyes. She looked familiar, but Lynessa couldn’t place where she had seen her before.

And so, the young woman stood there as the coolness washed over her, fading away her scars… staring at the stranger.

Re: Into the Unknown (Closed)

The beast was defeated as both Lucas and Lynessa gave all their effort to piercing the creatures heart. The lightning knight sword gave the final blow though without them all together they surely would have failed. The beast going cold and becoming naught but a hunk of stone and ash. Defeated.

Unsure as to what had truly happened Lucas hopped down from atop the ruined enemy and into the dusty wastes with a sigh. The death around them was horrendous, he'd seen bodies but never as mutilated as those who died fighting this monster.

The words came again, echos in his mind as he looked at the cost of there victory and if more were to come then they needed to get much better. Far better than they were now.

Lucas first went to the bodies before he did the other two. The orb following over to him as he crouched by each of the dead, offering a small prayer for them to their patron immortal Ilaren. They deserved something having given their lives and the newly converted Lucas gave them such.

Once he was finished going from body to body he touched the orb again thanking Lovalus for the power they had granted here. Taking up a position alongside Lynessa as Varlum approached. “Some time yes.” He answered the Ithecal is passing but noted the distraction of the woman.

First to the same direction as he was feeling the pull, towards the lake that sat beside their city home. “I feel it too, there is something there waiting for us.” He left it at that as her attention was drawn to something else but his own focus remained towards the lake. He would have to go there and for some reasons he knew he had to get the other two to go as well.

I'd like to thank you three for sticking with this thread. It has been an absolute pleasure to write. I loved Varlums bravery and stubbornness. He never would give in no matter the danger. Lucas, your story contained a wonderful arc. He stuck with his faith and it rewarded him. I can't wait to see where he goes next. Lynessa, I've watched your PC grow over the last few months and she really is becoming someone amazing. I've also greatly enjoyed watching her bond with Naera develop. They are quite a pair :D

You three are all wonderful writers, thank you for writing with me in this event.

During his journey back to Rharne the hulking Ithecal became somehow aware of the fact that he was no longer alone. A single woman walked patiently alongside him. She was a human, however her eyes were crimson and slitted at the pupils. The female was dark of hair and her features were pale.

“My brave knight.” She said warmly with a smile. “I see you took your fair share of hits.” The woman muttered, glancing down at the Ithecal’s sore leg.

“All to give them time, to give them a chance. You protected them above all else.”

There was a warm feeling that alighted on the top of Varlum’s hand.

“May this protect you, so you may protect others when the next fight comes.” The words were spoken fiercely and with conviction as the image of a silver shield graced the scales of his hand. When Varlum looked back up at the woman it was as if she had never been there.

Congratulations you have been Marked by Ethelynda.
Taithir

Serpents Hood: Named for the technique many snakes use to appear more threatening, Serpents Hood generates an aura around the user that makes them appear like significantly bigger threat than the people around them, drawing the attention of enemy combatants towards the Shield-Bearer and away from more vulnerable targets. This ability lasts until the Shield-Bearer deactivates it or is rendered unconscious or dead.

Enduring Scales:The Shield-Bearer's skin takes on a scale pattern, allowing them to absorb more physical damage than they could before. Poisons and toxins also take longer to effect the Shield-Bearer. The effect only lasts for a single Bit, and takes a Break to recharge before it can be used again.

Faithful: As a token of her appreciation Ilaren has sent a Thunder Priestess to deliver a gift to Lucas following the fight in the Stormwastes. It is a purse containing 400GN along with a simple pewter sigil ring that bears the emblem of Rharne; a fist clutching lightning bolts.

Lucas remains for a time as others begin to leave the shattered campsite. What has happened to-trial has changed the world and him. He is a man who knew nothing but darkness but somehow found the hope to continue and strive for something greater than himself. Hope had been his salvation and in that he had saved others.

The stars began to appear as the evening waned into night. The clouds above cleared revealing the beautiful tapestry of night. Without any hint that he was no longer alone a voice spoke from behind him.

“It is good you found hope, now you may give it to others.”

A tall man with dark skin loomed over Lucas, looked at him with eyes that faintly gleamed with the silvery radiance of starlight.

“May you lead them out of dark places.”

Then a tiny dot of light glimmered on his right forearm. It looked like a small lonely star. When the ex-convict looked up the man had vanished.

The woman with the fiery red hair approached Lynessa soon after the Flameborn became cold and unmoving. She removed her cloak as she came to stand beside the young priestess. She looked at Lynessa curiously, inspecting her face as if looking for something in particular.

“This isn’t the first time you have protected Rharne, and I doubt it will be the last.” Ilaren uttered with a crooked smile.
Her hand clapped the Priestess on her narrow shoulders and the young woman felt a sharp tingle ricochet around her body.

The Immortal grew quiet before her sharp gaze met Lynessa’s eyes.

“I’m proud of you. Never forget that.”

There was a soft rumble of thunder and suddenly Ilaren had vanished.
