Re: Hopetoun

Thread:
Supplicants

Participants: Doran
Brief description of thread: Wishing to garner a bit of Xiur's favor, the settlers of Hopetoun give Doran little gifts. Doran decides to spread a little hope himself by providing the settlers with medical advice as well as giving them medicine.
Settlement Resources Used:
  • NPCs
Intended Changes:See this guide.
  • Doran proves himself trustworthy.
  • The player completes an action that directly solves a problem the settlement is experiencing. (possible health issues)
  • The player completes an action that directly protects the settlers from harm. (Maybe - sickness can cause harm.)
  • The player has completed their third ever settlement thread, or their first settlement thread of a new Cycle. (I'm not sure if this applies as Doran is not a permanent resident of Hopetoun.)
 ! Message from: Trouble
Accepted. As a result of this thread, Hopetoun has gained:
  • +2% Order (is does solve a problem, but is not protecting them from an imediate threat.)
Notice
On the night of the 27th of Ashan, when Doran falls asleep he has a strange dream. In his dream he is standing in a what looks to be a huge temple built of sandstone. It is old and dusty, with large cracks in the walls and pillars, and bits of rubble fallen from the cieling dotted around the floor. All around him there are statues: each one unique, but all of people dressed in fine clothes or armours from every corner of the world reaching towards the centre of the room; the only place illumtinated by a single ray of sunlight peering through a crack in the roof above.

In the centre of the room sits a throne carved from rock: simple in design, but engraved with symbols he does not recognise. It is old and worn, but there is a feeling of weight to their air around it. The specks of dust Doran can see in the ray of light are frozen in midair, as if time itself has been halted by the presence of the throne. Sitting upon the throne is an old skeleton, dry and lifeless. Though the skeleton bears no discrening features, something about it gives Doran the strange feeling that he recognises it. Though he only dreams of this scene for a moment, when he wakes up the day he can remember the image with perfect clarity.

Re: Hopetoun

Thread:
PSF Ticket

Participants: Vega
Brief description of thread: This is a PSF request that's approving a capstone. I'm including it here because it will impact the settlement.

Settlement Resources Used:
  • NPCs

Intended Changes:See this guide.
  • The player acquires a grandmaster skill / capstone which will impact the day-to-day lives of the settlers.
The capstone:
DSM-III: Pumpernickels
Vega is a fundamentally hopeful person and, by virtue of that, she allows, expects, and demands, that others are hopeful too. Psychological theory is clear - people feel hopeful (or not) about themselves, the world, the future. The more of these one can feel hopeful and positive about - the better one feels. Vega understands that tiny shreds of hope are vital to people and she can find and exploit them even in the darkest situations. From ridiculous names for terrifying creatures, to being able to make things comfortable when previously they had been hopeless, people feel better when Vega is there. Her presence means that people feel hopeful about the world, about the future - and about themselves and therefore work harder and more cohesively. This promotes a sense of common purpose and a shared identity - akin to a biqaj clan. Mechanically, this means that any "clan-like" situation Vega is in (examples from play include the Lightning Knights, the Wardens of Lovalus, the Settlement of Hopetoun) simply functions in a more orderly and communal manner. People are cohesive and friendly, and they function as a group.

The impact of this capstone is situational and, as such, I'll include it in review requests etc.

Approved: here
Since this impacts groups directly, I thought it might have an effect such as community cohesion under Darius' leadership, sort of thing?

  • Effect: Never Say Die: As long as Vega resides in Hopetoun, her presence inspires hope in its settlers: hope that they they will endure the trials they face today, and that the new day waiting for them tomorrow will be a better one. This spark of hope gives them a tenacity that allows them to push just beyond their physical limits when faced with a challenge, and compels them to refuse to give up no matter what opposition they face. Back-to-back, they will fight togehter until the bitter end.

Thread(s): Feeding the Masses
Participants: Arlo, Vega, NPC: Serena (with Darius' permission / knowledge)

Brief description of thread:
I've previously posted this, but have just got the Cooking Capstone approved and you requested that I post again if the capstone will have an effect on the settlement. I believe it will, while Arlo is here.
It's approved here and is
"Camp Chef: Arlo has worked long and hard at preparing and providing food for groups of people; large groups and small. He's also spent time working at Cally's with Faith Augustin and saw how she cooks. Having seen the way that Faith planned her menus, and having put it in to practice himself on multiple occasions, Arlo has learned to make food which is beyond delicious but which also helps keep people healthy. Those who eat Arlo's food just once find themselves filled with the sort of energy and stamina which lasts longer than ordinary, and for those who eat it regularly, they find that they are healthier, meaning they can fight illnesses and disease better and maintain more energy day to day."
 ! Message from: Trouble
Accepted. As a result of this thread, Hopetoun has gained:
  • Effect: Compliments to the Chef: As long as Arlo resides in Hopetoun, his cooking capstone allows him to provide settlers with food that boosts their health and energy. The people of Hopetoun are more resistant to diseases, and when they do catch illnesses are less weakened by its effects.

Re: Hopetoun

Thread:
Searching for Hope

Participants: Vega, Arisora, NPC Isra
Brief description of thread: Ari'sora is being taken to Faldrass for therapy - the Order of the Adunih ship runs into trouble because of the storm / freeze. Vega is recognised by Ari'sora's therapist and she asks Vega to help. Vega helps in the way she knows best. She's obnoxious, obstreperous, straight talking and she "de-dweebs" Ari. She also challenges Isra and suggests what Isra needs is to get back to what she loves about her job.

Settlement Resources Used:
  • NPCs

Intended Changes:See this guide.
  • A new group of people join the settlement. (Isra (linked in the thread) and 3 other Order of the Adunih members join Hopetoun) = +4 population, -4 order.
  • Maybe (not sure) "The player sets up a useful service in their settlement, such as a bank or insurance broker, and instructs settlers on how to run this service themselves." - because the healers are here to help the settlers / say in there that they're setting up an Order group?
  • Vega performs an action which is seen as a miracle by the settlers. I was going to put this as the "is trustworthy" one - and suggest +1 order. But the consequence given (below) suggests more than that, maybe? I'm not sure and am happy to go with whatever. Consequence is: "Some people around Hopetoun have taken to thinking that Vega is a miracle worker. They begin making outlandish requests of her, and at one point a line/crowd of about a dozen or more begins to form, and they all have the most embarrassing and outlandish requests to make of her." Would appreciate a mod-call on the order given here. Thanks
     ! Message from: Trouble
Accepted. As a result of this thread, Hopetoun has gained:
    • +4 Population.
    • -3% Order. (Population increase - proof of trustworthiness.)
    • Tertiary Resource: Healing
I would say that the consequence described merits no change to the settlement, but would be useful plot hook for a future thread.

Re: Hopetoun

End of Season Review

Congratulations! Hopetoun has survived its first full cycle!

This post is a final review of all the changes that have occurred in Hopetoun during the last cycle. The copy of the profile below serves as a record of the final state of Hopetoun as of the end of the Rebirth Cycle 721. If there are any missing effects or incorrect numbers please PM me to let me know.

Hopetoun completed its challenge this cycle, and as such suffers no additional consequences.

As part of the settlement system trial Pegasus will be taking over as the lead mod for this settlement as of this cycle, with me weighing in when needed or to review posts made by Pegasus' characters.

Settlement Name: Hopetoun
Settlement Location: Faldrass
Statistics
Wealth: +100 WP
- Tax: 0%
Population: 46
- Military: 5
Order: 56%
- Demographic: (95% human, 5% Cadouri)
Industry: Effects:
  • Faldrass' Favour: The Induk of Faldrass favours this settlement. Crops planted in this settlement will grow large and healthy, well-fed by the rich nutrients from the volcanic soil that never seem to run out.
  • The Libertalia: It's useful to have a leader who owns their own personal ship. As long as the Libertalia is docked near Hopetoun, supplies are able to be ordered and delivered from somewhere other that Faldrass far more quickly. The Libertalia can travel to any city with a port as per the travel times for a ship. Once there, each member of the crew will need approximately one day to purchase and load one option from the shoppe on board. The Libertalia will then need to travel back to Faldrass as per the travel times to deliver these items.
  • Agricultural Harmony: Hopetoun's main source of food and trade resolves around the growth of agricultural products, which are enhanced by a number of other effects that aid the growth of plant life, and is protected from large animals by its surrounding wall. As a result small woodland animals, such as squirrels, hedgehogs and small birds, find Hopetoun to be a paradise and nest within its walls.
  • Walled Settlement: Hopetoun is protected by a charwood palisade wall, making it easier to defend and better at keeping out wild animals.
  • Hopetoun Oasis: Hopetoun has a Brightgleam Oasis imbued with the Font of Life ability. Thanks to this magical oasis plant life around Hopetoun grows at an astonishing rate, allowing for an increased yield from agricultural resources. The wealth points gained as a result of building farms or other places that grow plants will be doubled.
  • Efficient Administration: Hopetoun keeps organised paperwork records of its imports, exports, gathered resources and other things that settlers discover when exploring the island. As long as these records are protected, Hopetoun will be more effective at noticing crimes related to the theft or smuggling of public resources. It is also possible to use these records to recall the detail of any notable events that occur in Hopetoun after the 40th of Ashan, 721.
  • Utalitarian People: The people of Hopetoun aren't fans of waste. Every item should have a clear purpose, and ideally could be used for a few other things as well. When prey is brought back from hunts every possible part of it should be used for something. The people of Hopetoun are known for being more efficient than most, and less bothered when disaster strike and their creature comforts are lost.
  • Military Training: Hopetoun's military NPCs possess 15xp in Strength and 25xp in Combat: Blades.
  • Never Say Die: As long as Vega resides in Hopetoun, her presence inspires hope in its settlers: hope that they they will endure the trials they face today, and that the new day waiting for them tomorrow will be a better one. This spark of hope gives them a tenacity that allows them to push just beyond their physical limits when faced with a challenge, and compels them to refuse to give up no matter what opposition they face. Back-to-back, they will fight togehter until the bitter end.
Compliments to the Chef: As long as Arlo resides in Hopetoun, his cooking capstone allows him to provide settlers with food that boosts their health and energy. The people of Hopetoun are more resistant to diseases, and when they do catch illnesses are less weakened by its effects.

Re: Hopetoun

Challenge!

It begins innocently enough. While ploughing a field to grow more faldrass potatoes in, one of Hopetoun's settlers uncovers a large fragment of white marble in the shape of an eye. The more the field is ploughed, the more that other similar fragments are found. Although dirty, the marble does not appear have been cracked or weathered by age at all, and it is soon discovered that the fragments fit back together as perfectly as a jigsaw. Perhaps a statue used to stand on the site that Hopetoun is now built on sometime in the distant past? Perhaps the volcanic eruption shifted the earth around where these fragments were originally buried? Whatever the case the proportions of the fragments suggests that the original statue must have been pretty large in size, and the white marble is no doubt high-quality to have endured underground for so many arcs. It isn't long before someone suggest that all the other fragments be dug up and reassembled. Surely such a fine statue could be sold for a considerable sum?

Yet as the trials pass and more fragments are found, the settlers involved in the restoration project begin to act increasingly strange. They gradually spend longer and longer at the dig site; neglecting food, family and rest in the pursuit of more fragments. They get steadily more aggressive in recruiting other settlers to help out with the dig, and steadily more hostile towards people who suggest they stop. In the rare moments they go home to rest, the diggers families report them tossing and turning fitfully in their sleep and muttering unintelligible words. Are the diggers merely getting too obsessed with their project, or is something more sinister at work here?

Thread: Forging Ahead
Participants: Vega, NPCs
Brief description of thread: It's one of the threads where Vega is building the beacon - which I'll link in the entirety once I know what's happened. However, the consequence given was:
Consequences: The local smith in Faldrass, Rengel Lostand has offered to do business with Hopetoun, and sends word that he's willing to keep a copy of the diagrams of the machine pieces that are needed for maintenance. In return for the steady business that is sent his way, he'll offer a small discount on nails and construction tools to the Hopetounians. Please submit this to the Hopetoun tracker.

Settlement Resources Used:

Intended Changes:See this guide.
  • The player completes an action that proves they are trustworthy to the settlers. +1% order
  • Hopetoun gets a relationship with Rengel Lostand - and a discount! (maybe "The player sets up a useful service in their settlement, such as a bank or insurance broker, and instructs settlers on how to run this service themselves." sort of?)

Thread: Rule #3: Don't Dehydrate
Participants: Vega, NPCs
Brief description of thread: Vega is teaching the Hopetoun NPCs + the NPCs from Saoire's School the basics of survival. She is aware that many of them are not survivalists and, as such, she feels it's important to make sure that they can stay alive if they get lost etc during a hunting trip or some such.

Settlement Resources Used:

Intended Changes:See this guide.

Re: Hopetoun

Thread: Size Doesn't Matter and The Point of Hope
Participants: Vega, NPCs
Brief description of thread: These are both threads for the construction of the Beacon of Hope, which I'll link here in it's entirety when it's done. However, in "The Point of Hope", Rover (cadouri from Saoire's School) suggests that they need a road from Hopetoun to Hope Point (where the Beacon is - highest point of Hopetoun). He draws up plans (this was before the skills scale down, so he had Design) and then, in "Size Doesn't Matter" we see the road being built and made so that bags of Scalvoris Sand can be put underneath it (like they used to do in the resort) - to keep it warm in winter, cool in summer.

In The tracker for Vega's Champion of Xiur plot - Pig Boy has said that the road is built, although it will need maintenance.

Settlement Resources Used: Wood & Sand (the sand is Faldrass sand so it's on the beach).

Intended Changes:See this guide.
  • The player completes an action that directly solves a problem the settlement is experiencing. (Does not stack with the above action.) (+2% Order) - I'm not sure on this. I think not having roads is a problem?
  • Roads: with the design for these roads, and the completion of them by construction experts, Hopetoun is able to move goods around more quickly.(? maybe?)

All threads related to the Xiur series will be awarded consequences together.
