Council Correspondence, Memos & Actions.

Almund is a thriving township with a dark side. With houses made from the wooden bodies of decommissioned ships, there are many opportunities here, coupled with many dangers.

Dear Albarech Kura and Council

I am writing to report that, after an extensive investigation involving many Rangers, including myself and Chief Ranger Elliott, it has come to light that the Dustin Family, a politically and commercially prominent family in Egilrun, has been and continues to be involved in activities both suspicious and actively antagonistic to the interests of the Council as well as to the Rangers.

Sargo alias "Saw" Dustin is a significant lumber camp and sawmill operator in Egilrun with ties both past and present to the Bethelsa family. His wife, Mina Dustin, nay[sic] Bethelsa, is the older sister of Harond Bethelsa, the disgraced and currently missing former foreman of the Sweaty Brow Company. Prior to the raid on the Logging Consortium last arc, the Dustins had connections to the Sherapo family, as well.

The activities of concern are:

1) Sargo Dustin is politically active. He is known to be sympathetic with interests who resent the enhanced role of the Council in Consortium business, as well as the recent presence of Rangers and Elements in Egilrun. He had previously done business with both Slag's Deep and the Pirate Kings, and is reported to have said that things were better for business, and for Egilrun, when they were around.

2) Sargo Dustin reportedly intends to stand for Egg, and sees Woe Morandi as a rival.

3) Sargo Dustin has been spying on the Egilrun Rangers with the help of one (soon-to-be-ex-)Junior Ranger Pattis.

4) Sargo Dustin has, partly with Pattis' help, has attempted to revive lumber operations in abandoned Sweaty Brow Company sites without Council/Consortium approval.

5) Mina Dustin, Sargo's wife, has organized a group called the "Egilrun Workshop for Women's Worries" which concerns itself among other things with spreading inflammatory rumors against the Egilrun Rangers.

Apart from terminating Pattis and formally requesting that EWWW desist from further unsubstantiated claims about the Rangers, Elliott and I have arranged for increased Ranger patrols at or near Sargo Dustin's lumber sites, as well as the abandoned Sweaty Brow sites.

We will update you on further developments.

Regards,
Oram Mednix, Egilrun Rangers

P.S. Mr. Morandi knows about this, too.

Dated: 16th of Saun 721
Delivered: By the hand of Gloom by the 21st of Saun 721

Addressed to the Albarech Kura and Council

Your Honor(s):

I've recently received a troubling missive from Oram Mednix, the ranger. In it, Mister Mednix paints the one who seeks the office of Egg, Sargo Dustin, as a most unsavory character. Should you wish to prevent him from assuming the office of Egg, I suggest you find someone to stand for Egilrun next cycle. It'd be a shame if he ran unopposed. I'm afraid I'm ensconced in several personal matters that render standing for Egg myself, despite Mister Dustin's delusions of rivalry, an impossibility.

It is for this reason, as well, that I must regretfully resign from the Elements effective at the end of Saun. I apologize for the inconvenience to the Militant or anyone else for my sudden absence and unavailability. However, my position as a healer at the Order of the Adunih is too important to me, for me to take any time away from it. I hope the Council and my fellow soldiers understand, that I am making this and the well-being of family my focus at the moment.

Sincerely,
Woe Morandi.

Re: Council Correspondence, Memos & Actions.

Vhalar 80, Arc 721

Delivered by Haven messenger to Kura's office

Madame Albrech,

During a conversation here in Haven with the researchers, I heard of a brawling tournament in Rharne, hosted by the Lightning Dome. I have also been made aware that the University is allowing use of the Eclipse portals for travel to this event.

Under normal circumstances, I would not ask your permission to attend, due to the travel time involved and being away from Haven for such an extended period. Use of the Eclipse portals changes that, and as such, I am seeking your consent to travel to Rharne for this event.

I confess that I am unsure if I need to ask consent but thought that it would be best to reach out and inform you of my request, and then apologize if it was found to be unnecessary.

The reason I would like to take part is to test my martial abilities against different combatants. As you are aware, I am trained in such, but would like to examine what areas I need to improve in, in case said abilities might be needed in the future. I feel I can do that best against fighters I’ve not fought before.

I would, if consent is granted, reach out to the Element forces on Faldrass and ask if it would be possible to step up patrols near Haven during the time I'm gone, just in case anything should go wrong. Also, I would happily assist with anything you might need done in Rharne, if anything.

I would only be gone for the duration of the tournament, promptly returning to Scalvoris and Haven upon the conclusion of the event.

Thank you for considering this request.

Regards,

Elisabeth Angelus

Elisabeth gets a letter back from Kura saying that she's free to attend the tournament if she wishes, but if she would like to help Scalvoris, looking into how Rharne handles its relationship with their local Induk, Lovalus, could help Scalvoris learn to improve its relationship with its four Induks.

Re: Council Correspondence, Memos & Actions.

Arc 721, 9th of Vhalar

To: Former Albarech Brandel
From: Darius Baer, Baron of House von Smooglenuff and founder of Hopetoun.

Dear Mister Albarech,

I am writing to you following the recent Scalvoris Council meeting, held in Almund on the 1st of Vhalar.

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your efforts as guardian of Watch and as Scalvoris' first Albarech. My Da was a sailor and he always spoke highly of you. He said he always felt safer leaving Scalv-Town, knowing that there was an extra pair of eyes nearby keeping a protective lookout. And he said that every time he returned from Viden, he knew he was home once he sailed past Watch and into safe Scalv waters.

With that said, the purpose of this letter is to acknowledge what you said to me in the council meeting. I attended the meeting with the intention of building a connection between the Smooglenuff Barony and the Scalvoris Council, but with the benefit of hindsight, I can see that I was ill-prepared. I had good intentions, but I didn't have a plan.

Next time, I will have a plan.

Thank you for what you said in the meeting. I want to do what I can for Scalvoris, but I know I have much to learn. You have led so well. Would you potentially be open to providing me with some guidance when you feel it's warranted? I think having a mentor with your amount of experience would be immensely helpful.

Even if you decline, I will feel more comfortable during my visits to future council meetings if I know you're keeping an eye on things, just as you did when my Da passed Watch for so many arcs.

Yours respectfully,
Darius Baer, Baron of House von Smooglenuff and founder of Hopetoun.

Brandel replies and offers to meet with Darius - he's very happy to work with Darius and help / mentor him - he'll come to either Hopetoun or the Barony - or anywhere else, really. You start the thread, and I'll be there!

Re: Council Correspondence, Memos & Actions.

Arc 721, 73rd of Zi'da

To: Harvardreen Councillor Linca
From: Darius Baer, Baron of House von Smooglenuff and founder of Hopetoun.

Dear Councillor Linca,

I am writing to you following the Scalvoris Council meeting back in Vhalar.

I felt that you were mostly supportive of my suggestions during the meeting and for that I wanted to thank you. I am not sure if it is because of my involvement with the hunting of Breachfang that you felt open to what I had to say, but I am grateful all the same.

I plan to attend the meeting in Cylus. I am hoping to make a proposal to help make the waters around Scalv safer for travellers, sailors, and fisherfolk. The danger does not come from a sea wolf this time, but from piracy. I have heard rumours that the Pirate Lords are returning. Although I do not know if these rumours are true, I can confirm that I have witnessed an increase in piracy. We captured a pirate ship near Hopetoun barely fifty trials ago.

The proposal I will be bringing to the meeting is that the von Smooglenuff Barony and the people of Faldrass pool our naval resources to form a fleet that can help to protect Scalv. This will of course require some form of funding - which I will have to think about - but I am hopeful that if you find merit in such an idea, that I might be able to count on your support at the meeting.

Irrespective of this, I hope the seas around Havardr remain free from peril so that your people are able to catch fish in peace.

Yours respectfully,
Darius Baer, Baron of House von Smooglenuff and founder of Hopetoun.
 ! Message from: Peg
Linca replies - he's pleased to receive Darius' letter - he's happy at the prospect Darius is suggesting. He assures Darius that he will listen to his proposal with positive mindset.

A letter arrives, looking very much like all the others on the outside. Within? Well, that's a different matter entirely...

Kura -

You are sticking your nose into matters that don’t concern you, you're being a voice of change and we are warning you now. Stop. By your hand, and the hands of others, Scalvoris is becoming something it has never been and was never intended to be. It’s unnatural and against everything in the old writings.

This abomination cannot continue. Do not disregard this letter or the intent behind it or you - and those you hold most dear - will pay the price.

We are watching. We are everywhere. We will act, without hesitation. Do not cross us.

OOC Information

Alright, let's get the show on the road. Your rank and profile in Scalvoris has attracted someone's attention. You are not required to participate but that doesn't change that your pc did get a letter so keep that in mind.

Here's some additional information for you!
  • Here is the link to a special tracker for pcs that wish to react/investigate/etc: Plot Tracker!
  • Council Members : All member of the council (pc and npc) received the letters.
  • The letter arrived in whatever manner/way your pc gets their normal mail. If you have questions about this, please let a Scalv mod know.

Re: Council Correspondence, Memos & Actions.

Arc 721, 74th of Zi'da

To: Militant Councillor Rand
From: Darius Baer, Baron of House von Smooglenuff and founder of Hopetoun.

Dear Councillor Rand,

I am writing to you about concerns I have regarding a perceived increase in piracy in the waters around Scalv. There are rumours that the Pirate Lords are returning, and while I can't tell if such claims are true, there definitely seems to be an increase in piracy in the area. Earlier in Zi'da, we captured a pirate ship near Hopetoun. The pirates themselves were certainly no Pirate Lords - desperate people driven to desperate measures - but there is concern that the Hollow Sea is not as safe as it once was.

As you are an authority on all things military across Scalv, I thought it might interest you that the von Smooglenuff Barony are of a view that they and the people of Faldrass could pool their naval resources to form a fleet that might help to protect Scalv. I plan to bring a proposal along this train of thought to the meeting of the Scalvoris Council in Cylus. I am hoping that giving you advance notice of this proposal might afford you the opportunity to consider its merit. I would hate for you to feel ambushed if I was to spring this upon you in the meeting itself.

There are other aspects about this proposal that will require some thought, such as how best to fund it, but I am hoping you can provide some insight into its value from a purely militaristic perspective, as it pertains to benefitting Scalv and the people who call it home.

Yours respectfully,
Darius Baer, Baron of House von Smooglenuff and founder of Hopetoun.
 ! Message from: Peg
Rand replies - he's very happy to discuss it but he is cautious, he tells Darius, of private militaries. However, he hopes that the Water Troops can work with the Barons in order to work out a way forward.

Re: Council Correspondence, Memos & Actions.

Arc 721, 75th of Zi'da

To: Accountant Councillor Shania
From: Darius Baer, Baron of House von Smooglenuff and founder of Hopetoun.

Dear Councillor Shania,

I am writing to you following the Scalvoris Council meeting back in Vhalar.

Recent rumours about an increase of pirate activity around Scalv - perhaps evidenced by our capture of a pirate ship near Hopetoun fifty trials ago - and the general disquiet that some now subsequently feel about the safety of the Hollow Sea, have led me to the conclusion that it may be of benefit for the von Smooglenuff Barony and the people of Faldrass to work together for the betterment of all Scalvorians. I am hoping to make a proposal at the upcoming meeting in Cylus that we establish a naval fleet to patrol Scalv waters. Between the barony and the settlements, we have a few ships that we can launch, although of course the more ships we can bring - and the more hands on each one - the more effective we can be as a security force.

I have sent missives to Councillors Linca and Rand to hear their thoughts on whether they think there is merit to this idea, but I am now writing to you as there would need to be some way to fund any additional ships or sailors, as well as the maintenance of the fleet.

At the meeting in Vhalar, I suggested that by having one councillor who serves the people of Scalvoris, with a handful of regional advisers who work part-time - as opposed to multiple full-time councillors who each represent a specific region - the council might make some financial savings.

I'm sure there are other ways the council could save money, of course. Perhaps those funds could then be put towards added security on the Hollow Sea.

I hope that by receiving this message prior to the meeting, you will have time to assess whether or not the council can afford such a venture.

Yours respectfully,
Darius Baer, Baron of House von Smooglenuff and founder of Hopetoun.
 ! Message from: Peg
Shania replies in a "formal but friendly" way. She says that she'll be happy to look at ways of funding this and will support the proposal. However, she can't guarantee the funding, but will do what she can.
