Affection [Part ii.]

Image
Her stomach growled and she dove into the pastry with the greediness of a small child, sending crumbs running down the front of her cloak as she struggled to find balance with both of her hands now full.

“Thank you,” she mumbled, grateful for both his simple kindness and the words of pride he shared about the work that occupied her days. They descended the granite steps at a leisurely pace, until Vincent paused and pulled a small broach from his pocket. Her eyes widened, sending signals of both pleasure and irritation that he had decided to do this when her mouth was full of food.

Sabine swallowed with vague discomfort and tossed what little was left of the pastry to a lone pigeon. She absent-mindedly brushed at her clothes as she eyed the small gift Vincent held out in his hands. It was a silver broach with a perfectly round kyanite gem set into its center. Four jagged bolts seemed to radiate out from the gem, as if inside it brewed a small storm desperate to be freed.

She shifted her loose hair away from her shoulder – a wordless invitation for him to clasp the broach to her cloak. “It’s beautiful, and it’s far too much,” she said. But her words contained no malice, and as she reached out to take his hand into hers, it would become clear that she intended to keep this gift.

A small spatter of rain landed on Vincent’s nose and she cracked a grin. “Your turn, now. Let’s find a shelter first.”

If he agreed, they would continue down the Pilgrim’s Ascent in quiet conversation until they reached an opening that led into the Glass Quarter. She pulled him along with her to the closest overhand – a small roof jutting out from a bar that sat nearest to the stairs.

“Okay,” she said, handing him the package wrapped in burlap and twine. “Open it.”

When he touched the gift, it would become clear that there was clothing inside. And there was – a navy wool cloak, thickly lined with matching blue cotton. The hood was trimmed with wolf’s fur and a black fastener was sewn near the neck. It wasn’t fancy, but it was warm and suited to the Rharnian style.

“Happy 12 Trials,” she murmured, reaching out to pull him close if he would let her.

Affection [Part ii.]

A small smile tugged at the corner of Vincent's mouth as he watched Sabine's reaction to the broach. One that grew as she moved her hair and gave him free access to attach it to her cloak. “It’s beautiful, and it’s far too much,”. He just continued to smile and shrugged at her comment about the price.

Then a small raindrop fell on his nose and Vincent found himself being pulled along by Sabine. He followed her as she led him down the Pilgrim's Ascent and into the Glass Quarter. Soon after arriving in the quarter he found himself huddled up under a small overhang outside a building as Sabine handed him a package wrapped in burlap, and secured with twine. “Okay, open it.” She insisted.

By the feel of the package Vincent could tell it was some kind of clothing, but wasn't entirely sure what kind. So with a quick tug and a small snap, the twine fell away and Vincent pulled out a well made blue cloak, similar in style to those he'd seen around town. Taking in the details of the cloak, he ran his hand over the cotton lining, and the wolf's fur that lined the hood. Then with a motion so fluid, it was only all to obvious how often he'd done it, Vincent threw the cloak around his shoulders with one hand and fastened it with the other, it falling behind him almost perfectly.

“Happy 12 Trials,” Sabine said, reaching out to pull him close.

Vincent smiled and stepped into her, letting her arms wrap around his neck as he wrapped his own gently around her waist and pulled her into him. "Happy 12 Trails, Bine." Vincent replied as he kissed her gently on the forehead. "So, as we've already exchanged gifts for today, what should we do with the rest of our evening?" Vincent asked this time giving her nose a small pump with his. "I was thinking we could grab something to eat between here and my place, then spend the rest of the night at my place, with a nice fire." He continued, ending his sentence with his lips on hers. If Sabine returned the kiss, Vincent would match her intensity. "How does that sound?" He finished when their lips finally parted.

Affection [Part ii.]

Her fingers brushed against the warm wool as her arms fell easily around Vincent’s neck. She watched his eyes as he spoke before returning his kiss with one of her own. Her arms tightened and her hands grasped at his hair as she drew him closer. Time stopped, and she found herself forgetting about the outside world and the rain that fell just beyond their little roof. There was no one else – only him.

Only Vincent.

Immortals, how far they’d come in just twelve trials. As a child, she’d heard all about how special the holiday was, about how it was the epitome of Rharnian romance, about how it began – and sometimes ended – so many love stories. But she’d always brushed the stories off as myth, as something parents told their children to spark their imaginations and help them understand the significance of giving. She had never expected to actually find herself in one of these fairytales.

Sabine ran her hands through Vincent’s hair and deepened the kiss. He was an enigma, this man, but was becoming less so with every passing trial. To think that at one point they’d been strangers – enemies, even – and now… now, she was in his arms. Maybe she would never fully know him, but between the gifts and the conversations and the band around their arms, she no longer felt as if his walls were impenetrable.

And neither were hers.

The kiss became a dance. Neither of them fought for control; instead, they pushed and pulled in equal measure, partners in every sense of the words. The intensity rose and fell as they matched each other’s rhythm, and Sabine found herself almost breathless when they finally, regretfully, broke apart.

“How does that sound?” she repeated. Around her, the spattering of rain sounded against the cobblestone road. “I think… I think we should go right to your place.” Her eyes brightened and a sly grin fell onto her lips.

“I’ll show you exactly what I’m hungry for.”

Affection [Part ii.]

Sabine

Overview

Oh, I can't even begin to tell you how much I love Sabine. The character you write is strong and vulnerable, determined and stubborn yet thoughtful and you weave in the beautiful little moments (the way she talked to Cloud....), her acknowledgement that she had allowed herself moments where she dared to dream of a future with Vincent. I've stalked this thread since you guys started writing it, I cheered when he kissed her the first time and I have to admit to a sniffle when she whispered his name. Within seconds she was calling him stupid and reminding him what a bad idea it is (it so is NOT, btw). I love her. For me, there are a hundred scenes in this thread which I enjoyed and which were crafted so beautifully, but my absolute favourite was when he gave her the dress. Her thought processes of how could she have something so expensive, so beautiful, and then the real underlying wonder of how could she allow herself to be happy with her family in the situation they were in were just beautiful; complex, realistic and exquisitely crafted. This was more than a pleasure to read and review, it was a privilege, thank you.

Affection [Part ii.]

Overview

“It'll have to be longer next time.” And it did, Vincent. And it did. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Firstly, not enough Cloud. Secondly, I think the horse-person above covered a lot of what made this thread really, really, really worked. The interplay, the chemistry, the quality of roleplaying weaved up a piece of collaborative writing that was deeply sensual, engaging, and incredibly compelling. Thirdly, not even shirtless scenes. You know how I feel about your abs, Vincent.

Enjoy your points.
