Odessa returned Malcolm's greeting with a pert smile and a small bow. "It's a lovely home." She replied, though her tone was somewhat disinterested and insincere as she cast her gaze around, taking in the clean but modest roons, far from the mansions Odessa had spent much of life in. The little group followed after their host, through the house and into the back yard, much to Odessa's relief, as the fresh air seemed to help in settling her stomach somewhat.

Another greeting, this time from Lady Burhan, and the trio stopped by the table, Odessa taking a cup of water to sip at slowly, her hand settling on Zeds broad arm, appreciating his stoic, settling silence in such a new and unconfortable enviroment. She found it rather strange, and even slightly irritating to have Zedarius recognized and greeted above herself, as the young noble had spent all of her life as a social focal point above most others. And to have the other Lady Warrick fail to recognise them at all! Odessa cast a brief look her way before turning her attention to the others at the table, not quite feeling upto one of her usual biting replies.

The parties attention moved on from them, and Odessa glanced up at her fiance. "If I'd had know you were in such high regard of so many, perhaps I wouldn't have put up such a fuss about our engagement." She murmured to him, her voice playful. Truly, he'd handled their introductions well, Odessa especially appreciating the fact that he'd meantioned her ahead of Damon, who by all right's should have come first. Grinning, she darted a sly and satisfied look at her brother, his irritation only causing Odessa to enjoy the moment more. "Are you alright, brother?" She asked, tilting her head and feigning a concerned tone. "You look a little irritated. Did you eat something bad?" Her grin broadened as he turned, making his way to the table.

I'm Coming Home

She avoided his question and reached out for her child, and Vaughn vindictively didn't want to let Elsie go. But then he stood and handed her the little girl over the table. He would not keep a mother from child, not even out of spite. Elyna had put down a wineglass in favor of water and he picked it up and set it out of Elsie's reach.

He didn't want to sit. "I'm not hungry," he said. He could feel the belligerence in his expression. His face felt hot.

With Elsie out of his grasp there was nothing there to keep him calm and he had to force himself to sink back down to the chair. The food he ignored completely and he thought longingly of the wine, but again reminded himself: not on an empty stomach. He resolutely looked away from Elyna and Elsie and his father and drummed his fingers on his knee.

They were trying to play nice with the conversation and he let it all wash over him. Listening and grunting out a response when it was necessary. He tried not to blame the people around him who weren't worthy of his anger. But it was sometimes hard for him to separate his emotions based on who deserved them and who didn't.

Still, he tried. He rubbed at his face. Suddenly he was exhausted.

Lei'lira Warrick he knew. They had spoken some in the past though he doubted she remembered him, he was sure she met a lot of nobles. Horses were usually a good topic for him, he loved the beasts, but as it was he was tired of it all. "You have a ranch?" He thought he remembered that. It had been her parents'.

"I only have a couple horses myself. They're both Andalusian. I really like the look of the stallion, Malcolm's Pride," he ignored it if his father looked his way, "But the animal is a warhorse through and through. Would rather squash me than be ridden. He won't even let his hooves be picked without a fight. I've been hoping to stud him and try his offspring for calmer personalities but some like a warhorse to be fierce. I say not so fierce as to be untameable."

Violet spoke to him then and he shrugged a shoulder. "I could take a look at your knives if you want," he said, then nodded towards the redheaded blacksmith that had sat himself on her other side, "But I feel he might be the better smith for it. Ever since the war I haven't had time so I'm sure I'm out of practice." He was speaking of his captivity, of course.

Damon Andaris was then introduced to the table and without adieu the man plopped down on Vaughn's other side. "Not mine," Vaughn said of Elsie at Damon's question, "My father's. And Elyna's. Spinster I am not." At the mention of Lorena whatever little fresh-found amusement he had quickly left.

"Whenever you want to," he said to the other's offer, and then abruptly stood once more. "If you all would excuse me." Damon could follow now or later, or he could not.

Vaughn stalked to the furthest edge of the garden, which was relatively expansive despite being within the city, and then flopped down into the grass, staring up at the skies and at the hint of stars just peeking from the first black of night. The puppy followed and he groaned and got up and took the dog and dumped her into Malcolm's lap since Elyna's was full. "I'll see you at the stables," he told the woman, almost as an afterthought. Then he walked back again and found the ground once more.

Damon shot a frustrated glare at his sister as he sat down next to Vaughn. Her barbs frustrated him; all he had done this whole trip was be nice to her. That's all he ever was, and Odessa seemed to have just written him off as a copy of his father. Damon bit his tongue, though - it would do him no good to argue with his sister now. He had, after all, noticed she had been quite ill himself, and he would rather not antagonise her. A glare, though, was shot to Zed. His sister he would spare his ire, but his sister's fiancee was a whole different matter.

He shrugged off the irritation before turning his attention to Vaughn. After his comment, he realised that perhaps the joking was ... the wrong time and place. It was only now, after he had already mocked the man, that he recognised the tight set of his shoulders and frustrated line of his mouth. Damon's heart sunk with guilt; it was a posture he knew all too well, and one he emulated often, when the realities of the world sunk in but you couldn't let it show.

Damon flashed an apologetic smile to Vaughn after the joke, but the damage had already been done. Shit, Damon thought, cursing himself for speaking without thinking. Lorena being dead was a joke to him now, knowing she was alive, but to Vaughn, who surely did not know, it was cruel mocking. Damon would have acted much the same way if someone had said something similar to him not five trials before.

Damon watched helplessly as the older man stood and strode away, only coming back briefly to deposit a thoroughly put out looking puppy in his father's lap. Damon sent a bitter, apologetic smile to the others at the table, regretting now how Elyna and the others would see him. This ... this was why Odessa thought of him the way she did. He spoke without thinking, antagonised instead of being soft... it was a way of surviving in the Andaris household, a way of protecting himself, but other people did not deserve the same treatment.

"Excuse me," Damon said, standing as abruptly as Vaughn had. "I'm just ... going to go and check on him." With that, he left the people at the party to enjoy their dinners and conversation, their socialising. Damon took slow measured steps as he approached Vaughn at the other side of the garden, before hesitantly sitting next to the stewing man. He looked angry, frustrated, and Damon floundered for something to say, before realising perhaps it was better to say nothing at all.

He pulled the pouch of reevi from his coat, and with a practice hand, started rolling a joint. Tobacco and reevi, into thin rolling papers, and rolled up parchment for a roach. Before lighting up, he glanced at Vaughn, and offered the joint in his direction. "Toke?" he asked. "Looks like you need one."

Note: Damon and Vaughn continue in a separate thread here.

The table was busy, people seemed to be getting along, or at least talking to one another, and for all Malcolm knew, without listening too closely, things were going well. He had been talking with Belinda when Vara, Elyna’s puppy, was dropped in his lap by Vaughn, and he watched the young man cross the garden, closely followed by Damon Andaris.
“Give us a hand with this?” Benjamin called to him from the fire pit where the deer had been cooked on a spit.
Malcolm excused himself from the table and helped Ben carve the meat, which was tender, succulent, and falling off the bone straight onto a large serving platter. They set one at each end of the table before Malcolm returned to his seat, but unlike Ben, didn't sit down.
Belinda tapped the edge of her glass with a spoon in order to draw the attention of the group, and Malcolm thanked her with a warm smile.
“Friends, family,” he addressed them. “It's a real pleasure to have you all here with us today, and such a seldom treat to gather and break bread with one another. We asked you here today for a couple of reasons, namely because it has been some time since we have seen a lot of you, and selfishly, to raise awareness for an upcoming project we are going to be funding in the city.”
Malcolm took a sip of water from his glass to wet dry lips, and continued. “As a result of the Qe’dreki rebellion and subsequent war, countless families were torn apart during the attack on Lowtown and the breach of the western gate, leaving a lot people without homes and orphaning a number of children, many of which now live on the streets. For a lot of us fortunate enough to have kept our houses and land after the attacks, it's easy to ignore the problem, but I challenge any one of your to visit the marketplace and walk by the countless faces begging for food, in need of a warm, safe place to sleep, and see if you feel the same way.”
Ben put an arm around his wife Belinda, who had lost her brother to the war, and was currently housing her sister in law and their three children in a two bedroom cottage. For them, this was a subject that hit close to home, just as Malcolm knew it did for a number of people sat at the table.
“Elyna and I have decided to buy some land in Midtown and build a centre dedicated to schooling and housing any who need it, but especially the children. And so I ask, if you have the means, for each of you to make a donation of gold, and pledge to match from my own pocket, any money raised tonight. For those of you who are able to offer something towards the build, your name will go on a small plaque on the stone wall of the well we will have installed. Thank you in advance and please enjoy the wine, and the deer, caught fresh this morning.” Malcolm smiled and took a seat.
Belinda reached out and took his hand and that of her husband, and Malcolm raised his hand to the person sat beside him before bowing his head and thanking Ashan the meal in front of them, and the continued health of their family and friends.
“Dig in,” he encouraged, and spooned a few vegetables onto a plate for Elyna and Elsie before helping himself.

Lei'lira was more than a little overwhelmed by trying to keep track of what so many people were saying. A woman introduced herself as Violet Warrick, and Lady Warrick, further explaining that she was Victor Warrick's daughter. The woman looked every bit the lady she was, and Lei'lira couldn't help but feel horribly out of place in her presence.

"Yes, it is a shame." Lei'lira murmured softly.

When Violet asked what she wanted to breed horses for, the question gave Lei'lira pause. It wasn't something she had ever really considered before. But...combat? No. The thought of putting innocent horses into danger in a war horrified her. Although...it was true that there was a need for such things. And breeding a fast, intelligent horse that could be used as a mount for a scout might not be so bad. A mount like that would be ideal for a courier as well. As for racing...that was more of a nobles' sport, and Lei'lira wasn't sure what she thought of it. On the one hand...some horses simply loved to run. A horse like that would thrive as a race horse as long as it was treated well. But how many race horses were pushed too far, too fast? How many of them were injured when their owners demanded more of them than they could give?

"Maybe." Lei'lira said at last.

"But I was thinking more of breeding riding horses. Some that are beautiful, with smooth, easy gaits to please even the pickiest noble. Others capable of running for long distances, ideal for a courier's mount. Or even for those who simply need a way to travel from one place to another. I like the idea of being able to provide a wide variety of horses so that everyone can find something they both want, and can afford."

The man...Vaughn? Yes, Vaughn. Why did he seem so familiar...? Wait. Could he be that Vaughn? Her friend from when she had been an awkward teenager who had been far more interested in animals, and books than anything else? A memory came to her of meeting a man during the Great Hunt when she'd been sixteen. She'd dreaded the thought of going hunting with him because she knew that her idea of "hunting" was a far cry from what others would call hunting. At the time, she had been certain that he would mock her when he realized that she enjoyed hunting for the secrets to be found in the forest surrounding her farm rather than taking down game. But he hadn't mocked her, and the "hunt" they'd had had been more fun than she ever imagined it would be.

Lei'lira thought they might be the same person, but enough time had passed, and enough things had happened since then, that she couldn't be sure. And she was quickly distracted by what he was saying about his horses.

"It's still a farm for now." she corrected softly.

"But I hope to turn it into a ranch, and a breeding farm some day."

It was her biggest dream, though she didn't say as much. Instead, she pictured how it would be in her mind's eye. Land sprawling as far as the eye could see, all belonging to her, fenced in and filled with good grazing land for horses. She allowed herself to daydream for a few ticks, before Vaughn caught her attention once more with the word "Andalusian." Her eyes lit up with intense interest, as she listened carefully, happy to hear just about anything in regards to such a beautiful breed of horses.

"Andalusians are a beautiful breed. You are lucky to own them."

She really didn't know much about warhorses, but it did seem to her that while fierceness might be an asset because it would allow them to fight for their rider, it was more important for the horse to be willing to obey commands. Wouldn't it be dangerous to have to rely on a horse who was more likely to lash out at you than carry you without a fight when you were headed into a battle? An untameable horse was a dangerous one, and certainly not something Lei'lira would want to depend on for her life.

"It is Ashan, which is breeding season for horses. If you're interested, and can come out to Warrick this season, you could try breeding Malcom's Pride to one of my mares?" she offered shyly.

But something seemed to anger Vaughn, as he deposited the puppy he had been holding on their host's lap without responding. Lei'lira wasn't even certain he had hear her offer. She wondered if she should try to find him after dinner, and make her offer again. But before she could give it much thought, Malcom addressed the group, and told them about a center for children who had been orphaned during the war. When he asked for donations, Lei'lira gathered her courage, and stood slowly.

"I'd like to donate fifty gold nels." she said quietly, before sitting down quickly.

Then she busied herself with the task of filling plates of food for Teirue, and Eri before getting something for herself.

Elyna turned to watched Lei’lira light up like a lantern. Horses. She loved horses and the skyrider almost grinned. Breeding horses? Now that was interesting. The skyrider loved training animals and working with them, but she had never considered trying to breed her own stock. “I have a bay, Ember, she’s a bit of a mixed breed, I borrowed her from the stables in Andaris and then I found that I couldn’t take her back.” She’d developed a bond and friendship with the animal, and couldn’t imagine trying to sell her.
“Socks, is part cart-horse I think, he’s a little heavy but he has beautiful feathers.” Violet made her contributions and Elyna frowned. Vaughn had given Elsie back and she was grateful to wrap her arms around her daughter, thanking him as she set the girl on her knee. Elyna examined Elsie’s dirty face before attempting to clean it with the wet cloth. The child was more intent on waving back at Teirue to notice her mother’s efforts and was soon wriggling to be set free. Could the toddlers play together? Elyna sat Elsie in the chair beside her, and next to Teirue and the baby stared at the older child before promptly offering her a pea.
From what she knew of Lei’lira, she felt it was unlikely that the woman would breed horses for war. She waited for Zedarious and Odessa to take their seats. Her own cheeks tinged pink with embarrassment. Surely she must have met Odessa before? Damon…that rang a few bells but the memory was distant and hazy. So she studied the young man, as he exchanged pleasantries with Vaughn.
Vaughn’s love of horses was not a surprise to the woman. More and more, she was seeing similarities between the young man and his father. He was also breeding horses? Malcolm’s pride? She almost choked on her glass of water. There was little doubt as to the inspiration behind the name. Lei’lira’s desire to breed riding horses caught her attention again.
The mood of Malcolm’s son seemed to have soured and he stood abruptly to excuse himself, returning only to deposit Vara and vanishing, Damon hot on his heels. A lovers tiff? She wondered, watching the two men. Until Violet directed her questions at Vakhanor. Elyna couldn’t help but smile, busying herself with the two children. From her pocket she produced two carved wooden horses, simple designs but two big to swallow. She dangled them in front of Elsie ad Teirue and was rewarded with a squeal of delight, as the wooden pony Elsie took hold of, was promptly marched along the table top.
Her grin only increased as Vakh responded, she was glad that her friend was enjoying himself. It was then that she glanced towards the newer arrivals, Odessa and Zed. They seemed rather cosy and wrapped up together and her expression softened. They were happy, in love.
Malcolm caught her eye as he stood to assist Benjamin. Her heart gave a little shiver as he began to speak, holding the attention of the group. She was glad it was him and not her standing there. She’d much rather sink under her chair and into the dirt than make a speech. The project was close to her heart though, she wanted, so desperately to try and help the citizens of Rynmere. Her cheeks were burning, she was sure of it. Her neck felt too hot and she stared at the tall man, unable to quite meet his gaze, but wanting to support him all the same. He made a generous offer before taking his seat. Elyna filled his plate with a slice of meat pie and performed a swap with him for the vegetables he’d prepared for her and Elsie.

___________________________________________________________
Hoooollllllyyyyyy crap, that was a long ass thread. That had me cracking up guys, oh my goodness!!!! Hahahah, maaannn, talk about awkward family get-togethers, you guys really stole it with this one! Violet and Vakhanor had me laughing in my chair and going "ooohhh, no, no, noooo!!!!" while Vaughn's reaction to everything was pretty much mine as well. Lol, Noble soap opera! The interaction between Odessa and Zedarius was super sweet too. I really like what I saw there and the dynamic with Damon. I was a little sad I didn't get to see more of Zed, Dessa, and Damon. I feel like you guys were just getting into your parts when the thread ended. Plus, what was wrong with Odessa? I can't wait to see what Damon brings to the table as I feel he has a lot of potential once he can pick himself out of the drugs and alcohol, if he ever does. I enjoy Elyna's use of all the "props" and people within the setting of the story. When someone would start to wander off, they'd somehow be looped back in to progress the story along-- neatly -- which was really nice to see. Especially Elsie and the subtle question from Vaughn of how old she was. It'll definitely be interesting once people start realizing how fast she's actually growing and how abnormal it truly is. You guys did an awesome job with this thread!

The only note that I'd like to mention is one of Vakhanor's posts. I'm not sure if it's because my brain is tired but during the middle of the story, the details didn't seem to mesh smoothly with the story. It was when Malcolm has stepped outside and confronted Vakh with a kind of peace offering? The way I interpreted the post, it seemed like the time between the confrontation and the "truce" was very quickly done, even though in the post it said something like-- not nearly 30 bits ago. Anywho, it was just a bit awkward, the details there. I think a bit of editing to include more "space between moments" might have helped. Maybe Vak got up to tend to the venison to help calm himself or maybe he struck up a conversation with someone else other than Elyna?

Anyways, great job guys!
