A Couple of Adulterer Terms

Myth, Legend, Game or Tradition: Tradition - Slang
Group: Yari
Origin: Yaralon Marriage Traditions
How to Participate: Call somebody a slicker-sheath, or a three-hander, or any number of other terms to reference their promiscuity. In most cases, the terms are not specific to gender or marital status, although that is from where they originate.
Summary: These are only a couple of the terms that could conceivably be used to describe those who cheat on their spouse. They are believed to be self-explanatory, referencing the recipient's openness to partners other than their spouse, or their two-timing nature.

The Quixote Club Showdown

Myth, Legend, Game or Tradition: Tradition
Group: Merchant Emperors/Empresses
Origin: At some point around the time when merchant empires first started to emerge in Yaralon, a small group of merchants with a taste for high-stakes gambling banded together to form the Quixote Club: a private poker club that only members of merchant empires were allowed to join. Whilst it remained a secret for a few years, as time passed more and more merchants began to join, each one bringing their own vast quantities of money and equally vast egos with them. With such huge amounts of wealth changing hands over every play it wasn't long before terrible feuds began to spring forth; accusations of cheating turned into duels, which in turn often ended up involving mercenaries and turned into small scale wars.

Realising that something had to be done, the founders of the club came up with a plan. They announced the existence of the club to the public and restructured the club into a tournament that would be held once an arc: the Quixote Club showdown. Whilst only representatives of a merchant empire were allowed to play at the actual table, the huge sums of nel being bet on each hand drew quite a sizeable crowd of spectators to serve as both witnesses of cheating and to force players to act with civility or risk loosing face. This plan was a huge success, and the showdown quickly became a huge public event! The citizens of Yaralon considered it a duel of sorts, and every merchant empire that wanted to be taken seriously was expected to at least make an appearance. Before long the Quixote Club showdown had become a tradition in it's own right; both a battle between long-reigning merchant emperors to prove to the public just who was the richest, smartest and most courageous money-maker in town, and a proving ground for any up-and-coming merchants to announce their entrance into the big leagues.

Summary: The tournament is hosted every arc on the 82nd of Ymiden by one of the merchant empires that have played in it more than three times in the past ten arcs, who are responsible for providing a suitably luxurious venue, food and drinks for the spectators, and protection from a major mercenary company in exchange for the prestige of hosting the event (which can go a long way to increasing their companies reputation.) While the event is open to anyone to watch for free the buy in cost is so ridiculously high (each chip is worth 1 onyx nel, and at least 100 chips must be purchased to sit at the table) that only merchants from a prestigious empire, professional gamblers hired as their representatives and the occasional foreign dignitary are able to play.

Whilst not blatantly forced to enter, it is socially demanded that at least one representative from each major merchant empire make an appearance at the table and put up a good fight, even if they don't win anything. Betting at such a high-stake game is seen as an act or courage, and conversely only playing small bets or not showing up to the table at all is regarded as extremely cowardly. Acting like a sore looser is also frowned upon, and will usually result in the offender being 'politely' thrown out a window by the mercenary company in charge of security. Whoever wins the most money on the night is considered to be the winner and enjoys a massive boost in public opinion, but is also expected to foot the bill for a drink for every member of the audience in a celebrators toast to their victory.

How to Participate: The showdown is free and open for anyone to watch. There are a ton of other small events happening around the place for guests to enjoy, food and drink stands, and enough security to put down any small-scale trouble quickly and efficiently.

In order to play in the actual showdown however the player must be able to afford the 100 onyx nel buy-in, and either be a member of a merchant empire or have at least tier 3 renown. If a player cannot meet one of the later requirements they can enter the game as a hired representative of a merchant company, however they will be expected to have a high enough level in gambling and other skills (pm a Yaralon mod to work out the details) and to put up a good show for them. This company can also provide the buy-in fee, but will in turn take the majority share of any winnings.

Brigantia

Image
Name: Brigantia
Race: Human/Ellune mix
Age: 14th Ashan 650
Title: Recluse of the Webspinners
Moderation Type: Mod Input
Able/Willing to Mentor?: Yes
Skills able/willing to Mentor in: Transmutation, Empathy, Attunement, Seduction
Bio:

Brigantia was always an unhappy child. Looked down upon by her pure-blooded sibling, and scorned for her human taint by her grand parents and extended family. From a young age, she grew to wish that she had no real relation to the people who raised her as their own, often entertaining such romantic ideas as joining a travelling carnival or mummer's group, or some other such thing.

So when Labrae appeared to her, it was hardly a scary event. The Mother of Crows was perhaps the first adult who'd appeared to show kindness to Brigantia, and having heard her pleas from afar, offered to take her away from the family that never wanted her. Overwhelmed with a sense of belonnging, Brigantia quickly stowed away what things she wanted to keep into a travel pack, and left with Mother.

Far from the bitter cold of the North, Brigantia took to the warm lands of Yaralon with enthusiasm. She learned the craft of weaving from her new siblings, who treated her far more friendly than her half-siblings and cousins had. When it came time for her to leave Labrae's nest, she did so reluctantly. She was nonetheless braced by the love the Mother had granted her, and took it with her outside of Yaralon, to experience the world beyond.

Her travels took her all along the Eastern regions of Idalos. Along the way, she used the wiles Labrae and the other webspinners had taught her to seduce a mage into teaching her the ways of magic. She forged a relationship with this man, and even married him for a time. Theirs was a tumultuous relationship, which didn't end until a freak accident with a magical missile from Brigantia's hand ended his life.

Brigantia never loved another after that incident, but took on trists here or there as needed to advance her interests and those of the Webspinners.

She fled justice as the jaws of consequence began to fall above her, and returned to make the run to Yaralon. She relied heavily on her magical abilities to see her through the Spines. Eventually she did arrive at the gates, after which she was given the silver mark. She made her way back to the neighborhood, to visit Labrae, and has kept in touch since from a distance.

She lived for decades in Yaralon, developing her magical capabilities, especially those relating to Transmutation.

Brigantia helps Sintra and Labrae whenever they need her. Often taking webspinners under her wing when they need a place apart from Labrae, for some 'emotional adjustments'. As a master mage, she commands a good amount of power and influence within the Webspinners, but has yet to teach even one student.

As one living independantly of the Webspinners at the moment, she is part of one of the Guilds of Yaralon, plying her weaving crafts, and promoting her old family whenever it needs.

Appearance: She's grown old, but still rather tall as a half-breed ellune. She stands at 6'4" with snow-white skin, and black, salt-pepper hair. She wears the finest of garments, and always carries a cane around with her while out and about in Yaralon. She's also a habitual smoker, carrying the trappings of that hobby: A pipe, and tobacco in a pouch. The ease of her lifestyle betrays her affluence, especially in Yaralon.
