Trapped

Ashan 18th, 718
The woman was uncomfortable as she walked, feeling far too exposed. Or perhaps the feeling was claustrophobic. She wasn’t entirely sure. The path she walked was entirely straightforward and narrow. Large pine trees with very little room in between pinned her on either side, keeping her confined to the trail she walked and unable to deviate. She could occasionally feel trunks brushing her shoulders as she moved and each time it happened she gave an uncomfortable shiver, trying to ignore the trapped sensation. She couldn’t feel her wings when she woke up in a small clearing of pines, and from her best understanding, they weren’t there. It felt like having a phantom limb as she could still feel them. But not once did she actually feel them, let alone get them to move or react to any of her commands. It felt like being a child again when the nerves and joins were too weak to actually control the black appendages. Of course, back then, she’d actually been able to feel them and get them to slightly respond. This was different entirely and it felt all too unnatural.
The only good thing about the situation was that she had no bird-like traits what so ever, including her feet that were impossible to run on. Of course, that was also a drawback considering what kind of situation she managed to find herself in. A wave of shivers ran their way down her spine making her jump and twist as another trunk brushed against her shoulder. So uncomfortable, so very terrifyingly uncomfortable. She hated it so desperately.
She’d been walking for an uncertain amount of time. It could be trills or breaks, she wasn’t entirely certain. She did know that one moment she was blinking and the next she suddenly stood face to face with the visage of a giant mansion in the middle of the woods. Her curiosity was only equaled by her caution and her fear. She took a deep breath as she inched closer and closer to the building. It reeked of death, the earthy smell of a graveyard combined with the rotting smell of decaying corpses. She had to swallow hard in order to not let herself throw up, the scent being completely overpowering of anything else in the area. The building itself was old and decrepit looking, the dark wood was highly reminiscent of shadows and the windows showing nothing but black and the slight reflectiveness that allowed someone to realize there was indeed glass and not just some wall. The upsetting part was the darkness behind the window didn’t seem the be the curtains. It seemed old and with a rush of wind, she could hear creaking.
She braced herself against a particularly strong blast of wind, her eyes dancing upwards curiously. Wasn’t it sunny moment ago? Or had it been overcast? She couldn’t remember but she could see dark storm clouds starting to roll in. A brilliant flash of light followed by a crash of thunder elicited a yelp from the terrified half-avriel. Everything felt so much more intimidating and horrifying, the house’s daunting visage continued to loom as the rolling clouds started to pour down rain upon the woman, plastering her hair and clothes to her body. The rail-thin creature was for the most part okay with the cold, but cold water was a different story entirely. The slightest amount of rain could be trouble for the wings if one wasn’t mindful, and whenever her clothes got damn she felt like she was drowning or sinking or trapped. Perhaps it was the avriel part of her shining through. She was tolerant enough to bathe regularly, unlike avriel, but she still never enjoyed the water.
As the rain only got fiercer and the storm began to howl with sharp whistle notes there was another loud bang. This time, however, it was the doors to the mansion swinging wide open. Again, she couldn’t see much inside the door as though it was an endless black void. It wasn’t much more inviting than sitting out here and waiting out the storm. At least until the wind got violent enough that she almost found herself getting picked up off the ground for a trill of time. With another yelp she fell to her knees, trying to cling to the earth against the oncoming storm. The wind shifted directions, pushing her towards the door now. The mansion had something almost drawing to it, as though it was beckoning her inside. Tauntingly the door waved around in the wind as though it was trying to tell her that this was her last chance. Hauntingly the whistling of the wind only seemed to get louder and louder as though the house was screaming. No, that was the wrong assessment. As though the house was singing to her like a siren, tell her to come inside.
The half-breed could feel the winds sting on her back as she tried to resist. She felt as though if she stayed outside for much longer she’d start to get cuts from how viciously the wind lashed at her skin. Perhaps she would if she wasn’t careful. The gales felt like whips and knives digging into her delicate skin and slashing it to pieces. Of course, she had no physical injury, but she could feel the pain as though she did. Finally giving up, she slunk towards the door, not brave enough to actually stand on her own feet against the wind.
Slinking into the building she kept her eyes fiercely closed. When she opened them, she could actually see. The inside of the building was dim, as though there was almost light but it was a very dark and grey kind of light. As though someone put a thick grey paper over lanterns all over the room. The wood on the inside of the building was also a dark shade, but there was a slight purple tone to the coloration. Curiously she looked the windows, finally standing up on shaky legs. It was just like looking through on the outside, completely blacked out.
Looking around she tried to get a feel for the situation surrounding her. This wasn’t a good place to be and she could feel the fear twisting deeply in her heart. It was dark and she didn’t belong, that was for certain enough. With a sharp breath, she tried to get control of her emotions but her heart was pounding viciously at the inside of her chest. It was impossible to regain the lost control she had over her own emotions, her heart rate only spiking faster and faster at every little noise that she heard. A whimper rested on his lips as her eyes darted around quickly.
She was expecting something bad to happen, and honestly, it didn’t take long for that something bad to happen. A bone-shaking roar ripped through the building making the half-breed once again cower. Her eyes flashed wildly in fear as she darted the first direction she laid eyes on, her body launching her down a hallway towards an unknown direction, hopefully somewhere safe. She could hear the pounding of footsteps as she ran, but never saw anything monster-like. It didn’t stop her from completely panicking as she dashed down another hallway and into the first open door. With a vicious slam, she forced the door shut and placed her back against it, as if that was going to help her keep the monster out.
After she was calm enough, her attempts to control her breathing almost working, her eyes rested on the room she’d found herself in. It was old and covered in cobwebs, the walls faded in their original color, but it was noticeably pink. There was one window that had bards on it, almost as though the room was something like a cell. She had the feeling that if she stayed here she would be safe. But she felt trapped and that feeling was almost as terrifying, not to mention uncomfortable, as facing a potentially deadly monster. The room wasn’t uncomfortable but it was eerie in a way. There were dolls completely covering a large shelf and the plush bed was covered in stuffed animals. She had no weapons and no way to protect herself without her talons or wings since that was what her unarmed capabilities rested on. It was safe in here though. She could stay here and be safe.
Looking around the room, the half-breed turned back the direction of the door. She couldn't stay here, not in a million arcs would she be happy sitting in a room like this for the rest of eternity. Her heart as much as it shook with fear, screeching for its freedom. And she would be more than happy to do her best in order to oblige its demands. Even if this was going to be one hell of an undertaking. The half-breed shook away the thoughts of failure or how this might turn out to be. She had a goal in mind now and she needed to move forward with it. Pushing the door back open she emerged into the dark and terrifying house. This was going to be a long journey.
