Journey from Raelia (Amaris)

The untamed wilderness of Melrath is vast and encompasses frigid mountain ranges, glacial fields, deep alpine lakes, dark ancient forests as well as the expansive shoreline of the nation. Here creatures and spirits dwell together in the remote places of the world, far from the hustle and bustle of civilization.

Journey from Raelia (Amaris)

Sun Sep 01, 2019 8:24 pm

38th of Ymiden

All morning it had been drizzling with rain and Brent was doing his best to keep dry with his hood up and his black cloak wrapped tightly about him. Things were not going as well as he had hoped. Earlier in the season he had decided to go to Raelia in hopes of selling some of his maps. His best map was a general map of Melrath that he had created partly using his own travels and partly with the help of an old sailor’s map he had purchased long ago. Before leaving his home in Alivilda, he had made ten copies which he hoped might be of interest to the city folk in Raelia. So far, he had only sold two.

The miserable weather wasn’t helping either.

Keeping his maps clutched tightly under his cloak, Brent decided to move on from this neighbourhood. It was mostly residential and clearly it didn’t contain the traveling sort of people. Suddenly having an idea, the cartographer headed for the main harbour. If any place were to contain travelers it would be by the docks. Grabbing the reins of his faithful but very wet horse, Brent limped along towards Draugen Bay.

“Maps! Local maps for sale! Passage along the river Vynmur!” Brent called out as water dripped from his beard. By now his voice was getting hoarse but he couldn’t give up after such a long trip to get to Raelia.

A bit of sun peaked through the dark clouds. Maybe it was finally going to clear up. He hobbled over to a place across from a fish stall where he could see the massive sailing ships docked and busy with sailors running up and down the decks. He tied his horse to a wooden post attached to the dock and looked around trying to see if anyone was not huddled up against the diminishing rain.

“Come get a local map!” Brent called out with renewed effort. “Travelers, sailors, set yourself at ease and find your way with a local map!”

An old sailor with a thick white beard came up to Brent. “What’s that you’ve got ere, boy? Map of the straights and bays?”

As Brent tentatively reached into his cloak to show one of his finished products, the sailor grabbed it and then spat on the ground.

“What’s this, land legs? This is no map! I wouldn’t use this to wipe my own arse! Where’s Noatun? Where are them islands? Spirits! When mer can fly…”

The sailor shoved the map back at Brent and stormed off leaving the cartographer both surprised and disheartened. Were they really that bad? Even as the sun peaked out from the clouds Brent felt that he might as well give up and go back home. Maybe there was a reason his maps weren’t selling.

Gritting his teeth, he made one last effort.

“Local maps for sale! Passage to Alivildas!”

Maybe he could at least have some company going home rather than just commiserating with Tony, his horse.

Amaris felt eyes on them, and they did not wonder why. The reason for that was clear to them because they had considered it - what a sight they made for. A tall, one-handed individual with a hare at their heels, a bird on their shoulder or flitting off ahead, and two cats peering out from their pack. This wasn't even counting their hair, which shimmered and changed color in the light. They tucked one loose strand behind their ear, just catching the change from a pale blue to soft yellow before it went to another hue. They swallowed, taking in the sights of the city around them.

They had not been in the city for very long. Really, they ought to have spent more time looking around before. But their journey had been long and they had very much so just wanted to rest. In the crowd now, they could observe their surroundings and maybe get a better picture of the place that had come to inhabit. Somewhere, amongst the voices, was the call of someone selling maps and passage to Alivildas. It was lost, almost, in the sea of noise but the mixed-blood tried their best to latch onto it.

The owner of the call was slightly to the side, and much smaller than Amaris. They blinked down at the man, then offered a smile. "I would like a map, sir." It took a moment of jostling the two cats in their pack to the side to reach inside the domain bag, but soon enough they reached in and produced a coin purse. "How much for one?"
