Territory. One could describe it as a place that is natural and occupied and defended by an animal. The denning site of Tai’klein was a bit away from Tosibeere Whakamatao. At most the site was secure and protected from frequent visitors of the springs, but that didn’t stop him and his familiar from living off the land as well. The den itself was well hidden and the collection of bramble collected on the wood’s ground helped to conceal it.
The red haired Sev’ryn sat in his den contemplating upon how life has begun to unfold. The journey of finding his familiar had come to an end, and now living out in the wilds mostly alone with just his familiar to keep him company was a real eye opener. Despite their short time together every day that passed Tai’klein felt more and more connected to Rei’sch, and almost craved to enjoy melding with him. The white wolf, laying down in the far corner of their den, peeked his head up as his ears quirked to some sort of sound.
“What is it?” Tai’klein asked before closing his eyes and escaping into a meditative state to observe the sounds of the wilds. A few birds chirping from up above, a gentle crack in the wind causing leaves to flay back and forth, and a collection of twigs cracking underneath something. Opening up his eyes, Tai’klein stood and the watchful wolf, snout on the ground, looked up from the floor as if wanting to stay. “Don’t act that way, you know we don’t have much food. It is at least worth a look.”
Tai’klein grabbed hold of his bow and arrows and slung his harp across his shoulders, it nestled just under his waist. “You’re going to try and hunt with bow?” Rei’sch said before Tai’klein responded back to his white wolf “You think you could do better?” The wolf sat down near the entrance to the den as if blocking Tai’klein from going out. The familiar was being fairly stern in wanting to go out and hunt.
After a few moments of shuffling his gear back down to the ground Tai’klein got comfortable, and closed his eyes. The smell around started to get more concentrated and as he meditated upon his familiar his vision shifted to observing his own body laying upon a wall of the den. It was a strange occurrence, but after a short moment the wolf was now one with Tai’klein.
After pawing at the ground for a brief moment, Tai’klein exited the den then darted out into the woods after making a few claw marks on a tree to note his territory. He smelled the dirt from a few of the trees and didn’t notice any new scents that had come across. Soon enough, the wolf took off and pounced between trees working his way through the woods in the way only an animal could. Suddenly a downwind of another animal scent wafted its way through the air. Immediately coming to a stop the wolf crouched down between some brush and started to stalk the scent.
It led to a clearing within the woods and it sounded as if whatever he was stalking was near some water. After carefully stalking forward, head low and eyes up, the wolf spotted its prey. A pack of Arnabari was gathered across a stream drinking and eating some of the wild grass that grew. Within his head he heard the call of Rei’sch once more. “These are quick and are very alert. You will have to target one, and as soon as one see’s you they will all run.” The wolf licked it’s chops in response and studied his prey some more. There were about 5 larger prey, most likely adults, and 2 smaller that looked half grown.
At first the wolf thought to attack the largest one there, but after thinking for a bit, if he could target both of the younger one it would prove a formidable hunt, but without help from another would prove far too difficult. Scowling forward the wolf slowly started to crawl forward underneath some brush, getting closer and closer to his prey. One of the older Arnabari turned for a glimpse and caused the wolf to freeze in his tracks hoping not to be seen. His white fur didn’t fare well for camouflage within the forest, but luckily this time he was covered by shrubs.
Waiting till the Arnabari turned back around, now would be his chance. The wolf started out in a sprint to the closest prey, one of the younger ones. During his sprint 4 of the adults and 2 of the smaller prey started to prance away in fear. The other one seemed to trot at a slower speed and couldn’t keep the pace of the other pack of Anabari, but still provided a good chase. Changing targets to the one that fell behind the wolf snarled as he ran, readying his teeth.
Paw by paw the wolf closed the distance as the Arnabari started to cross the stream, pouncing off rocks like it was second nature to them. With a great leap the wolf plummeted into the waters and started to run towards his prey. The water slowed them all down, but the wolf kept chase. As they reached the other side the land went into a hill and now was the time to attack. The wolf ended up right behind the slower Arnabari and chomped down at its leg crunching through its cartilage and sending it scrambling to the ground trying to get away. In the struggle the wolf was kicked in his hind leg slightly, but the adrenaline and blood lust sent the wolf into a fury as he went towards the neck for the kill.
Gaping teeth climped down on the neck and blood spattered about with his nuzzle completely covered in the crimson liquid. A furious shake finished the job as the Arnabari quit struggling and fell down the hill into the shallow waters below. Chasing after his dead prey the wolf enjoyed the kill a bit, by thrashing the dead body around a bit more before starting to drag it back to his den. Through the process of dragging the heavy Arnabari the wolf struggled through the terrain leaving a bloody trail. Pausing in the process halfway to the den the wolf let out a cry that could be heard far and wide in the woods. The howl was unmistakable and despite everything else, Tai’klein was enjoying himself and the prey he had just prized.
Despite the carnal and savage natures of the wolf, the whole process seemed beautiful to Tai’klein. The thrill of the hunt, the chase, the kill, the taste of the blood. It was unlike anything he had ever experience as a humanoid. It was as if he was living off the land explicitly, and this was his law. Though, he wasn’t the only predators within these woods, and as he was dragging the body of his prey into the den, he could almost hear something stalking him. Fleeting sounds of paws striking the ground circled around as panting and bark could be heard. The wolf went directly over to Tai’klein’s body and laid down, and up arose the red haired Sev’ryn.
At first Tai’klein wiped his mouth as if there was blood on it, but after observing no such thing he got up and picked up a torch that was lit and grabbed his bow. Heading outside of the den the light momentarily blinded him and he could hear the quickened steps of some sort of quadruped dashing towards him. After letting out a snarl and yell the man quickly raised his long bow and knocked an arrow and blindly fired in the direction he heard the noise. It missed and was quickly followed by a tackle of some sort of ravenous beast, as others headed in to join in on the capture.
After scrambling a bit, and getting scratched by some sharp claws, the red haired Sev’ryn let out a furious cry of pain and anger and clutched onto his torch tightly. He waved it up and bluntly hit his attacked with it’s hot embers which caused the beast to let off. Bracing himself on a tree, Tai’klein got up and observed his attackers. They looked like a pack of dogs and had small ears, jagged teeth, and a boney structure. He heard from his wolf counterpart the single word “Spulmokawarta Pups” in a growl.
These small beasts seemed to track them back to their den, and if they would want to keep their den safe would most likely have to kill each and every one of them. A very daunting task.
