[Memory] When the Defender Need Protection

The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

[Memory] When the Defender Need Protection

When the Defender Need Protection
7th of Ashan 710

Jasper Rel Ardiechy

“We must become so alone, so utterly alone, that we withdraw into our innermost self. It is a way of bitter suffering. But then our solitude is overcome, we are no longer alone, for we find that our innermost self is the spirit, that it is God, the indivisible. And suddenly we find ourselves in the midst of the world, yet undisturbed by its multiplicity, for our innermost soul we know ourselves to be one with all being.”

― Hermann Hesse

The boy stood in the warehouse where the cask of product would age before they were sent out. The skinny boy moved quickly between the barrels avoiding touching them at all so that they wouldn’t be disturbed. Jasper wasn’t to worried about just being casually caught in this warehouse. While each location was routinely checked it was late enough in the trial any check up on the product should have already been done. The boy was more concerned with leaving any trace for his brother to find him and finish what he had started.

It took a little while, longer then it normally would, since the boy was extremely jumpy and paused with any unexplained sound. He eventually did find his way to the spot he knew would be there. It was a spot that he had retreated to before, but usually just when he wanted to be alone in the ever-crowded hold. He had an old pillow, in desperate need of more feathers, he also had a blanket with holes that with his mothers permission he had taken before it was made into scraps.

He would read here or just think on the world around him here, but not on this particular trial. He sat down and grabbing the blanket threw it over his head and focused on his breathing. He had resisted the urge to cry, but now alone, it threatened to overwhelm him. So with the blanket over his head he rocked back and forth, forcing his breath in and out so as not to cry. He could feel his left eye beginning to swell even as he focused on his breathing. His stomach also hurt and he was general sure he was bruised in other places.

Jasper actually wasn’t worried about his parents seeing him cry, just being caught being weak by the person who had perpetrated this beating. He also knew that crying would give his spot away and that wasn’t something he was willing to do. This was his place this was his spot. The breathing seemed to help as he had less crying like sounds escaping from his lips anymore. To say he wasn’t crying would actually be wrong, the tears were coming, it was just the wails that he was fighting to suppress. Eventually Jasper lay his head on his pillow and continued to breath, and continued to focus until he drifted off to sleep.

It was a while later when Jasper awoke, he could hear his name being called. Jasper stayed where he was until sleep had drifted away and he was able to identify the voice. It was his cousin Erik. He was sixteen arcs old, and had always been kind to Jasper and his other younger cousins. “Jasper, I am alone, you can come out.” He was saying. The boy wasn’t sure how long he had been asleep, but it was long enough that he was struggling to see out of his swollen eye. He carefully moved between the barrels which was hard to do while crawling, but Jasper was thine and made it work.

Or at least though he did. When he got close enough, Jasper could see Erik squatting by the barrels looking at the crawling boy. His cousin’s expression instantly dropped from amused to concerned. The second son of Lynond Ardiechy sighed and finished crawling out. As soon as he stood up Erik moved him so they were in better light. Jasper didn’t resist because the moment he stood up his stomach tried to rebel and bring up his breakfast. The older boy carefully looked over Jasper’s face and then checked him out so see where else he was injured. “Where all does it hurt.” The boy stood quietly his stubbornness showing. He like Erik but he wouldn’t let it be known that he was complaining. He stood up straight and fought to keep his breakfast down. As had many children though out the ages, he lost that battle, but he had the good sense to turn his head away from his cousin. Jasper had been sick before but this time he just kept throwing up.

The boy eventually sat down exhausted as his cousin knelt down and asked. “Did he punch you in the gut?” Erik asked. Jasper nodded as he tried to heavy again. “Lets get you home.”

“No.” Jasper gasped. “I am not going give him the satisfaction….” Jasper didn’t finish before trying to heavy again.

Erik nodded his head and stood up. Jasper sat there feeling miserable and alone as his cousin left the warehouse. Jasper couldn’t say how long he sat there before the door opened again and Erik returned with his parents and even his grandmothers. Jasper found himself wrapped in both of his parents arms. His mother whispering. “My brave boy, my brave foolish boy.” She whispered as held him.

“We are proud of you.” His father said. “The younger boys told us what happened.” He said holding his son and wife. Jasper looked into their eyes and saw worry and pride.

“I couldn’t let him cheat and bully the younger children.” Jasper said in explanation.

“Your grandfather taught you well.” One of his grandmothers said.

“Yes he is, just with out the right hook.” The other said. She looked at Erik. “Erik my boy. Do you feel up to giving Jasper some defense lessons.” She gave her grandson a loving humorous look. “I suspect given the people involved here that this will happen again.”

Erik nodded. “Lets get him better first, then gladly.” Jasper could see his father nodding his approval even as they helped him stand up.

Jasper lesson didn’t actually start that trial, but despite his mother’s worry Jasper didn’t go home either. Instead he and the boys he was protecting found themselves enjoying a camping trip at the edge of the forest with their cousin Eric. It was mid morning the next trial after they had all eaten breakfast that the young man brought all of the boys into a clearing. He looked at the boys a kindly serious expression on his face. “Alright boys let’s get straight to the point. After yesterday’s incident we feel that it would be best if you boys could defend yourself.”

“Will we be able to beat up Lynond then.” Rewan asked in his pipping boyish voice.

“Maybe eventually but that is only if you keep practicing.” Eric said and then his expression turn serious. “Understand though that if I find all of you ganging up on Lynond then you will all be in serious trouble.” His gaze looked around. “Lynond is a bully, and here on the farm we can’t always be around make his behave, so that is why we feel you need a bit of training. Your are not to become our own crusade against him. Defend yourself and tell you parents.” He titled his head and smiled. “And continue to play and have fun while you can.”

The boys all nodded there heads more afraid of Eric’s frown then of Lynond’s demands. Eric nodded feeling he had there attention. “Okay so the first this is that there is nothing wrong with dodging a blow. Only a bad fighter will mock you for dodging.” He looked at them and instructed then have one person practice trying to hit another so he could see them trying to dodge. Jasper found himself facing off against his cousin. The two grinned at each other as Jasper began to leap from side to side while Asmund threw a punch.

The two boys did this for a couple of bits before Erik came up and trying not to laugh stopped both of them. “Okay boys it appears we need to work on both dodging and punching.” He looked at Jasper. “It is great to be light on your feet and there will be times where you will want to move from where you are standing, but we need to use less bouncy movements. You waist a lot of time and energy. If you didn’t have someone whose punches were even more dramatic they would easily catch up to you.” He said winking at Asmund.

All of the boys followed there cousins led as he showed them how they cold step back, or shift at the waist. Jasper almost felt like he was dancing. All the movement seemed simple but he knew he hadn’t ever though about them. Already he was seeing steps that while it might not have stopped the beating would have helped cut down on the contact from his brother’s fist.

Eric paused after a while and looked over the boys. “Okay so I wasn’t planning on actually teaching you how to hit, but after watching some of your performances.” He looked specifically as Asmund. “I feel that we need to clean some of that up.”

Jasper was called forward and Eric had Jasper practice closing his fist and then pointed out that different parts of the fist and the arm. He explained the how you need to hold your wrist and which muscles to tense. The young boy was amazed at how much was actually involved in throwing a punch. Lynond always bragged about just being a natural fighter, but Jasper wondered how anyone could just naturally know all of this. He looked at Eric and asked.

“Lynond claims that he just naturally knows all of this.” Japer said, Eric luckily caught the question.

“Lynond isn’t a natural, but he does and has for arcs, hung around fights and I suspect has picked up a few tricks.” He looked at the boys and said. “Lynond’s fighting skill is fueled by his anger and pride. Which for someone with no or little skills can make his very furious, but for someone like me who has trained his anger and pride because his weekness. This is why I don’t want you fighting in anger you will do better with a clear head.”

He looked around. “Come one boys show me those punches.” Jasper stood there for a long moment and though about what his cousin had said. As he did that he realized how his own lack of emotional control had hindered him in the fight yesterday. Jasper was still glade he had stood up to his brother, but he could have stepped away soon instead of letting his brother play his emotions. Jasper felt his cousin touch his should and Jasper looked up and smiled.

“Sorry was just thinking how my own emotions got me beat up.” He said, “Next time I just need to keep from being goaded in a fight with Lynond.” He grinned then. “Though watching Lynond throwing punches that miss me would be fun.” Jasper missed the perplexed expression on his cousins face as he turned his focus on the punches he had learned.

Comments: I always enjoy reading threads from a PC’s childhood, and you wrote a young Jasper very well in my opinion. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him when I realized that he was hiding in the warehouse because someone had beaten him up. You described his mental state, and how he didn’t want to cry and subsequently betray his location well. Poor Jasper!

The scene where Jasper met with his family after Erik had taken him home was quite touching. I smirked a little when one of his grandmothers said he was without the right hook!

The subsequent lesson in unarmed combat that Eric gave the boys was entertaining and easy to understand. Eric seemed to be a little more powerful than a Flavor NPC to me though. He gave me the impression of being a rather competent teacher. Please consider writing him up, especially if you plan on using him again. Unless I overlooked something, and he’s already been written up? If the latter is the case, let me know, please!

Enjoy your rewards!

P.S.: I might have added "Stealth" to the list of skills used as Jasper didn't want to betray his location in the first post - and "Detection" because he noticed his cousin's voice.
