The iron bars, to some they’d represent a prison though if the bars are all you know, then the represent the security of familiarity. The cage was consistent, but sometimes the things outside of it changed. Not always for the better, sometimes it was calm seas and smooth sailing at night, But sometimes “it” came.
A pair of eyes that sat in the dark. Yellow and gleaming they stared at him never blinking, it never growled or approached, the cage kept it at bay, it couldn’t get into his cage but it always waited on the outside. He was convinced it wanted him to come to it, like it was waiting on him. He didn’t want to leave his cage though it was safe inside, so there it sat waiting on him. It had sad eyes, sometimes even angry eyes but for the most part they always seemed sad or lonely. It made him sad too, but his fear of leaving always overwhelmed the sorrow he shared with the thing outside.
So he sat waiting on the night to end, it always felt like a long time when they eyes visited. Hours turned to days it felt like as the gentle rocking motions of the sea lulled him into boredom. The yes moved about sometimes when he wasn’t looking but they never left the shadows, so he was never able to figure out what it looked like, but it didn’t scare him, in fact if there was anything consistent to the creature, it was that it seemed to want to be with him, it would growl at other things in the dark sometimes.
So the two waited adrift at sea, one caged, the other free.
It felt however as if this night was different, there were unfamiliar footsteps about, the creaking of the ship did not conceal the presence of another in the quiet night. Looking about he searched for whatever it was, but the almost solid darkness concealed everything more than a few steps away from his cage.
