[Elements Hall]Earth, Wind and Fire. And... Ronan!

119th of Vhalar, Early morning
Elements Hall, Scalvoris Town

Most of Scalvoris was probably still asleep at this hour but it also meant that the Elements hall wasn't as crowded as it was during the day. Apparently, the local law enforcement on a former pirate island was quite busy, despite the pirates being all gone, more or less. Ronan hadn't been around long enough to really know what was going on on the island. Despite the early hour, Elements hall was open, as it always was, and some poor sods were probably getting ready for the last leg of their night shift. Ronan pushed the door open and stepped inside. The buildings in Scalvoris still made him feel a little sea sick from time to time and the Elements hall definitely wasn't an exception. To his surprise, the night shift sod he expected turned out to be an older lady who seemed to be just settling in behind her desk.

"Good morning, ma'am. I'm here to sign up for the Elements." She looked up from her desk and continued to look up until she finally reached his face. "Ah... Okay and who did you make your appointment with?" Ronan's face must have told her all she needed to know as he had no idea what she was talking about. "Or are you here to make an appointment for your interview then?" It sounded like the woman wasn't dealing with this for the first time. Probably many new recruits came here thinking to start off immediately and then get confused, much like he had. "Well, I just want to join the troops, ma'am, that's all. Do I need an appointment for that?" She flipped open one of her many ledgers and fingered through some of the pages. "Normally you would need one but..."

She let the rest of her sentence linger for a moment before finishing. "...yes, Selenia should be in. I could let you go and see her right now. There's no appointment scheduled at the moment. It's quite early, you see. Let me go and check." Ronan nodded as the older woman, probably around his own age, now that he thought about it, got up from her seat and walked to one of the many doors leading out of the general reception area. There was a brief conversation he couldn't hear before the lady leaned back out and waved him over. She stepped out and as he reached her she smiled at him. "She can see you now. Don't tell anyone I got you in without an appointment, ok, just our little secret." He wasn't sure if she put a wink at the end of her sentence or not, she turned away before he could properly register it. "Thank you, ma'am."

Making appointments to join the army was an odd practice in Ronan's mind. But, if he had to talk to some guy, or apparently girl, before he could get paid, then he'd talk to them. Ronan ducked slightly as he walked into the little office. There was some paperwork on the desk and a cabinet to the side. That and two chairs, one on each side of the desk, was all the furniture in the room. While Ronan wasn't claustrophobic in any way, the office reminded him of his first cell. It had barely been larger than this. "Excuse me? The lady outside said I could come in." Only now did Ronan notice just how young the woman across from him was. That she was a woman wasn't a surprise, there had been female fighters in the arena as well, but she seemed quite... aristocratic, frail and pure came to mind instantly.

"Have a seat." She smiled up at him and waved towards the other seat in the room. Ronan pulled it a little back from the desk and sat down, carefully. He'd crushed one chair too many in his life and had developed a carefulness around them. There was indeed some creaking of the wood as he lowered more of his weight onto the seat but the chair seemed to hold for now. "So, you'd like to join the Elements? Mind telling me your name and why you'd like to join?" She sounded quite friendly as she spoke. Ronan didn't feel like she was against him joining, despite the early hour at which he'd arrived. "Well, I'm Ronan and I need money. When I think about what I have to offer in exchange for that money, only these come to mind." He held up his hands, two shovels worth of hands, and looked each one for a moment before looking back towards the woman behind the desk.

[Elements Hall]Earth, Wind and Fire. And... Ronan!

"Well, it's not all about fighting, just so you know. Being an Element means you're keeping the peace, which more often than not means calming people down with words, mediating in disputes and such, preventing them from becoming a fight." Ronan listened carefully. If there was some sort of test after this he hoped it wouldn't involve things of that nature. That said, he'd try his best to remember everything that was said, none the less. "Oh, no. I know that. It just helps to have big hands when you're trying to talk someone out of a fight, you know." The woman nodded and made a note on her paper. "Could you tell me where you're from, how old you are and what you did before this?" Ronan pondered for a moment on the numbers part of the question.

Age became less important the more you found yourself in life or death situation after situation. You only looked back to the beginning of the fight and thought about the end of the fight. Any other numbers related to time or whatnot became useless. It didn't matter whether you died as a twelve year old or a forty year old, dead was dead. "Originally from Rynmere but I've been all over. I mainly worked as a miner and an arena fighter. As for age, I think around sixty or something..." The woman looked up from her paper, surprise on her face. "Sixty you think?" Ronan couldn't really tell whether it was the number or the fact that he didn't know for sure that surprised her more. "Yes, I've never really been sure about it. Sixty sounds like a good number." She seemed to manage to compose herself again and wrote down his answers. "And which Element do you see yourself working for?"

"Which Element? -The- Elements, I hope." He stressed the word somewhat, not really understanding the question. Apparently, the Elements did things differently than what he was used to. "You know, Earth, Fire, Wind and Water. The land, flame, air and water troops?" What a complicated system. Whichever was the one that meant he punched people to get them to stop punching each other? Out of those four choices, the land troops seemed more his style, mostly so because they sounded the simplest. "Oh, the Land troops then. I'm not much for swimming or flying." Ronan gave a shrug, trying to brush of the fact that he couldn't do either of those.

"Well, the way things work here is that you'll have to spend at least 20 trials in each of the four Elements before you get to choose your final, and permanent, assignment or assignments. While you're more than welcome to aim to join the Land troops, you will have to spend 20 trials working and training with the other three Elements as well. We prefer that everyone knows what's going on when the other Elements show up. It creates stronger bonds between the different Elements." Ronan nodded and found himself agreeing with the basic idea behind it. If you knew how the others worked then you could more easily work together, allowing teamwork to get started much faster.

Ronan nodded. "I understand. I don't mind spending some time with the other Elements first before getting assigned to the one that suits me best." The woman scribbled some more information on the page in front of her before looking back up. "You will have to provide your own armor and weapons as the Elements has none to spare. Your mounts, however, will be supplied by the Element you're training with and once you've passed your superior will discuss a permanent mount with you." While it was odd for a military unit to not have matching uniforms or identifying outfits, Ronan didn't mind having to supply his own. He'd gotten so used to the gauntlets and nothing else that any sort of armor or whatnot usually got in the way.
The Elements seemed more at ease with individual fighting styles given their lack of uniforms and weaponry to share with new recruits.

[Elements Hall]Earth, Wind and Fire. And... Ronan!

"Currently, our training squads are all out or on leave so you'll have to wait a little before I can assign you to one. Do you have a preference as to where you'd like to start?" Ronan pondered his choices. Air and Water would be quite complicated to start things off with and for Fire he didn't really understand what exactly they did so he started to lean more towards the Earth Element to begin with. Before he could make a proper choice,
the woman spoke up again. "Actually, if you'd like, I can assign you a job that would allow you to start right now in the Fire Element. You can get used to the way we do things in the Elements while seeing some of the difference we have with other military units. The Fire unit isn't too different from the Earth so you'll find yourself in somewhat familiar situations." She skimmed a different page she'd picked up from somewhere as she spoke.

If the Fire Element really wasn't all that different from the others, perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad idea to start there. He figured he knew how the Earth Element worked so seeing some of the differences with other militaries might give him more of an idea. "I'll do that then. What's the job?"
She turned the page she'd been holding over to him. It was a request for help from the Order of Adunih, the healers who'd more than once saved his life and patched him up on what seemed to have been a trialy basis. It wouldn't harm him giving something back. The request mentioned previous attacks on the order and requiring bodyguards to go with them when leaving for other locations besides Scalvoris and Almund. The bottom of the message mentioned a monetary reward as well. "I can do that. I'll start in the Flame Troops with this and then I should be done with all four of the twenty trials sometime at the end of Zi'da."

"I will finish up the paperwork and you can come back tomorrow, same time, to sign everything and I'll try to have someone from the Flame Troops for you to report to by then as well." Ronan nodded before putting the paper back down. Usually, bureaucrats were very tense when it came to their paperwork so him taking it with him probably wasn't a good idea. He could find the Order by himself. "So, I'll see you tomorrow morning then. Thank you for your help." Ronan stood up from his chair and reached his hand over the table. The woman got up as well and shook it. She also tapped her fingers against a green and brown pin on her outfit, something he hadn't paid attention to before. "And should you decide to stick with your Land choice, you and I might be seeing a lot more of each other."

Ronan left the little office and walked back into the main entrance area where the older lady had settled into her job now. It seemed like he'd timed things right as other people were starting to arrive at the hall, talking with her or walking into the various doors leading to other places in the building. So, job done. Tomorrow he would come back to sign the papers and officially become an Element Trooper before visiting the Order and finding out more about the job he'd been given. Would they allow him to keep the money? Maybe he could try and convince them that they hadn't given him any in case they did want a part of it. Ronan let the fresh morning air wash over him as he stepped out the door.
