Date to be determined...

"Damn cows." Bryn said the harsh Haltunga cutting through the empty fields. He was alone, walking through the freezing cold in search of an escaped cow. He was furious, he provided them with food and shelter from the weather and how is he repaid? With one of them finding some way to escape. He marched through the snow and wind following the clear tracks of his cow, they were not exactly difficult to find in the snow. The cow had followed an odd path winding about across the fields, it was like ti had been looking for something. Yet, clearly there was nothing around, all that could be seen for miles around were snow covered fields, the willow woods and a few farm houses dotted here and there.

He huffed heavily from inside his large fur coat, the hood covering his head and protecting his ears from the wind. So much could not be said for the rest of his face which was red from the cold wind blowing against it. His nose had begun to run leaving him sniffing every few meters, but he was hot on the cows trail and that was how he found a way to be comfortable with trudging through the freezing farm land. He could not afford to lose a cow, he needed them all or he would be out of money and soon forced to flee back to Uthaldria and tell Snorri he had failed. He knew the day would come that he would return there, but that day would be by choice not from fear of starving to death.

It started to snow now and he sighed again, a long puff of white coming from his mouth and leaving his hood. As luck would have it he now spotted the cow, his eyes narrowing as he looked at the patchy coloured creature about 100 meters away. Had it not been snowy he would have spotted it a long distance off, but with the whited and black patched hide she was hard to spot. His pace quickened as he approached the cow, but so did the snow, it was already falling in large heavy flakes, landing and settling on his coat.

"You damn cow, get here." He said gruffly as he threw the rope he had been carrying over its head and neck. He tugged on the rope and the cow followed him lazily. He was lucky to be walking with the wind behind him otherwise his face would have been getting blasted and frozen solid now. The only warmth provided for his face was now coming from the breathe that left this lips as he struggled through the deepening snow. He was beginning to get cold, colder than he could deal with. He was sure the cow was struggling too, but her thicker body worked to insulate her much better than his skin and coat. His beard did keep his lower face warmer though, however, it did little for anything above his cheek bones.

The wind now came less straight and started to blow in all kinds of directions, blasting snow in his face against his sides and back. He could hardly see as not only was it Cylus but because the snow hitting his eyes made it hard to keep them open. He did, somehow, manage to spot a pair of glowing windows off to his left. Out of fear of getting lost and freezing to death he changed his path for them. He walked faster, desperately trying to get out of the freezing cold.

He eventually made it to the front of the house where he banged heavily on the door. His beard full of snow and the rest of his face red and sore. "Hello." He shouted as he banged on the door again forcing the cow to stand closer to the house where there was a little more shelter for her. He really hoped it would not freeze to death out here. At this point he must have looked very odd, covered in snow with a cow in tow and standing before some random persons house. He felt a fool, but he had no choice but to seek refuge and so he knocked one last time and waited for an answer.

[Treth] Come in out of the cold

A storm was howling outside, and Tei'serin was very grateful for the warmth of her small cottage. The Cylus twilight was held back by a fire burning merrily in her fireplace. It's flickering glow also offered light for Tei'serin to see by as she worked on her current task.

With the coldest season upon us, more people will be sick with colds, fevers, and flus than even in Zi'da. I need to make sure I'll have enough herbs to help the people who come to me for aid. she thought as she began going through her supply of herbs.

Let's see...what herbs will I need the most for such things...

Fresh ginger root could be grated or chopped very finely, and made into a tea that was very good to help with sore throats. Ginger tea was also good to drink on a cold day since it could warm a person up quite nicely. Unfortunately, since it was so spicy, it had to be diluted for children. It could, however be flavored with lemon or honey to improve the flavor. Ginger was a good expectorant, and it could be used to fight inflammation and pain when in powdered form. Powdered ginger didn't need to be fresh to be made into a tea, so it was easier to keep on hand than ginger root was. Since it was Cylus, and well into the cold seasons, Tei'serin was all out of fresh ginger root. She did have a good supply of powdered ginger though, and if she was careful, she was confidant that she could make it last until she could get more in Ashan.

Echinacea was another good herb for treating colds. It did little to treat the symptoms of a cold, but it seemed to make the body stronger, allowing someone to fight off a cold more easily. Putting thirty drops of echinacea tincture in a cup of water and gargling with it was known to shorten the length of a cold. It could also be drunk in tea form as needed. And if someone began drinking echinacea tea as soon as they were exposed to someone who had a cold, or the flu, it was possible that they might not even get sick at all. With so many people sick, she was running low on her supply of echinacea. But Cylus was a short season. The weather would start to get warmer once Ashan arrived, and with the warmer weather, fewer people would need echinacea. It would be close, but Tei'serin thought she might have enough to get her through the rest of Cylus.

Tei'serin kept a running list of what herbs could be used to treat various ailments, so when she needed to check her herb stores for herbs to treat a specific condition, she knew what to look for. Keeping track of the lists in her mind also helped her to memorize what herbs were good for what ailments. That in turn made it easier for her to learn about new herbs. The downside was that she had difficulty remembering which herbs were good for what she needed to treat without using her mental lists.

Astragalus, elder flower, elderberry, garlic, licorice root, stinging nettle, ginsing, and lemon balm had similar properties, strengthening a person's body so that they could fight off colds and flu more effectively. Elder flower was especially good since it was a gentle herb that could be given to children, and it had a pleasant flavor that made it easy for children and adults alike to take. Elderberry could be given to children as well, but it seemed to be more effective against the flu than a cold. Tei'serin had plenty of both. As a teacher, she liked to think that she was good with children. And since she worked with them all the time, she was always well aware that some herbs were too harsh to give them.

Astragalus had the benefit of increasing blood flow to an area when applied to the skin, and as a result, speeding healing. But she wasn't as familiar with that particular herb, so she didn't usually keep a supply of it; she preferred to only use herbs she knew well. Garlic was another herb that Tei'serin tended to keep a large supply of. Like ginger, it was an expectorant, so it would help a patient cough up mucus while it strengthened their body's ability to fight off the illness that afflicted it. And since garlic was a popular food, it could be administered easily. Many people ate it often, and even those who didn't could get it easily enough.

Ginsing had the added benefit of reducing the severity of cold symptoms as well as shortening the length of a cold. Tei'serin tried to make sure she had a ready supply of it at all times. She especially liked herbs that could be used for multiple purposes because she worried about the effects of giving someone too many herbal remedies at once in order to treat their symptoms. Herbal remedies that were good in and of themselves might interact with other remedies, and either cancel each other out, or worse, hurt the patient taking them in some way.

She had plenty of garlic, too. But she was all out of licorice root, stinging nettle, and lemon balm. Tei'serin paused to grab some paper, and write them down on a list of herbs she needed to look for once Ashan came, and the weather turned warm once more. If she couldn't find any in Willow Woods, she would need to ask for permission to make a trip into Ne'haer so she could buy some.

Ephedra was used to treat bronchial asthma cold and flu, chills, lack of perspiration, headache, nasal congestion, aching joints and bones, cough and wheezing, and edema. It cleared up respiratory congestion, and relaxed the airways. But it also stimulated the heart. Large doses of the herb could raise blood pressure. It could also cause palpitations, nervousness, insomnia, nausea, flushing, and headaches. As a result, it should not be given to a patient with a weak heart, and when it was used, the patient should be carefully monitored to see if any complications resulted. For this reason, Tei'serin didn't use the herb often. She kept a small supply in case of an emergency. If she didn't have anything else to use, it would be better than nothing. But even then, using the herb made her nervous.

Tei'serin preferred to use either peppermint, or eucalyptus. Both herbs were good for relaxing the airways and opening congested sinuses and nasal passages. They could be made into teas, candies that could be used to soothe sore throats as well as suppress coughing, chest rubs, and they could be be boiled in water so the fumes could be inhaled.

Hyssop, and sage were good for colds as well. When made into a tea, using equal parts hyssop, sage, and eucalyptus, most common cold symptoms could be treated with a single remedy. But sage was known to dry up a mother's milk, so it couldn't be given to pregnant women, or nursing mothers. It was still one of Tei'serin's favorite cold remedies, so she always made certain to have plenty of all three herbs on hand.

Tei'serin paused in her mental check list when she thought she heard a sound over the wind raging outside. When it didn't come again, she started to go back to checking her herb stores, but was distracted by a loud pounding on the door. It was followed by a shout loud enough to be heard over the raging wind. Startled, Tei'serin jumped, and hurried over to the door.

When she opened it, she blinked in startled reaction, trying to make sense of what she saw. A giant of a man stood at her door. Tall, and muscular, he made an extremely intimidating sight. Tei'serin's first impulse was to shut the door, and hide. The only thing that kept her from doing just that was the certainty that if he wanted to come in after her, nothing was going to stop him from doing just that. He looked strong enough to tear her door off of its hinges as easily as she could tear a piece of paper in half.

She took in his long blond hair, and beard almost absently as she tried to give herself time to react. Thorin must have sent the man to her. What possible other reason could he have to be out in a storm? But at the same time...would a man really risk traveling in this weather for anything short of an absolute need? And if that were true, then why was this strange man here? What possible need could bring anyone out to her farm? Beyond the pleasure of using her body, she had little to offer anyone. She did know her herbs. But the type of illnesses she knew how to treat were not severe enough to send someone out in weather like to seek a cure.

Tei'serin heard a noise behind the man, and when she looked to see what had made it, she saw a cow. A cow of all things. That only confused her even further. Why would a man Thorin sent to her for a reward be traveling with a cow? Unless...did he have anyone who lived near by working for him? It wasn't an impossible idea. And if he did, it might explain why the man was willing to risk traveling in a storm for his reward. He might be used to traveling in this kind of weather. Or perhaps he didn't have far to travel, and if he had a farm to run on top of whatever he did for Thorin, his free time would be severely limited.

If Thorin really had sent him, Tei'serin couldn't turn him away. Simply keeping him waiting as long as she had could get her into a lot of trouble. So she reluctantly stood back, and invited her inside.

"Please come in, sir." she said nervously.

"Make yourself comfortable. I'll see to the needs of your cow. She can shelter in my barn while you're here."

If he allowed her to, Tei'serin would take the cow into the barn, and make certain that she had some food and water before returning.

"How can I serve you?" she asked timidly.

While she waited for the man's answer, she studied him carefully, searching for any clues he might give her as to what he required from her.

[Treth] Come in out of the cold

Image

The door opened quickly after he knocked, quicker than he had anticipated. He found his eyes immediately greeted by a girl backed by a warm glow, along with the warmth as it was driven out of the house by the advancing cold. He found himself looking down upon her, looking into her big brown eyes. She was certainly petite, probably the smallest woman he had ever met. Her brown hair that shimmered in the fiery glow was stunning and her big doe eyes

He admired her short stature, it was something he had always liked. Something about a girl who was petite appealed to him, he had never been sure why but he knew that they were what he liked. Part of him had always considered it to be that he could carry them around and if they were annoying him he could easily lift them and put them somewhere they couldn't annoy him. Yet, maybe it was just the desire to have someone different from yourself, opposites attract or that was what he had been told anyway. And she was definitely different.

He smile down her as she allowed him to enter her small home. It wasn't much different from his own, it had a somewhat more womanly feel to it. "Thank you." He said simply as she showed him in and then left quickly to bed down the escapee. While she was gone Brynjar moved over to stand by the fire, taking in its warmth as he waited for his host to return. It was fair that she had not been expecting him, who would expect a man and his cow to show up in the middle of a snow storm.

"I Brynjar, you be?" He said facing the Sev'ryn woman, she had made an interesting choice in words. 'Serve him', he wondered what she meant by it. To serve him was an odd idea, he was nothing but a simple farmer, why would she feel it necessary to serve him. He was missing something for sure.

It was apparent from Bryn's grasp on common that he was not from around Ne'haer originally. "Oh no, you no serve, I want only wait storm through." He certainly wouldn't have complained if she had meant something else by choice. It had certainly felt like a proposition the more he considered it.
