➸ It was a usual day, the warmth of the sun in the air, and the tranquility of the forests around me. I needed to get out of the house, being there all alone was just mind-numbing. I figured going out and practicing my archery would help keep me from going crazy, well more than I thought I already was.
I made my way into the forests outside the city, I wouldn't be a danger if I was far from them. I had gone quite the distance into the lush city of trees, marking my way back home. Once I felt I was far enough away I took my bow in hand and notched an arrow.
It had been quite some time since I picked up my bow, let alone fired an arrow, and I was well aware of being out of practice. That being said, I refused to fuck this up. Walking through the vegetation I kept my eyes open for anything I could use as suitable target practice.
Closing my eyes, I focused my ears so to try and pick up on the sounds of animals nearby. Between the song of the winds in the treeline and the distant kaws of the birds of the forest, it was hard to really hear anything moving on the ground. Standing completely still, my ears happened to pick up on a faint sound, movement of some kind.
Drudging up the confidence, I took a step and let loose the arrow, watching it soar through the air. It looked like it was going to hit, but no, it landed right in front of the deer's face, into the tree next to it. It perked its head up and looked, then spotted me and ran, and the chase was on.
Taking off after it, I reached for two more arrows as I trailed it, making sure to keep up with it. When I thought I had a good shot I took it, watching to see if I hit it before running after it again. It was apparent my skill sucked, as each shot never connected.
Guess I need to switch up my approach, I opted to fire along the path I thought it would take. Notching my arrow, I fired off 5 arrows one after another, changing the position I was in before letting them go to increase my chances of hitting the animal.
The first two whizzed by it, the third missed it by a hair, the fourth was of a mind of its own and went in the opposite direction somehow, but the fifth one actually hit. It was a flesh wound from what I could tell, the damn thing kept going, but at least I hit it which was good enough for me.
Even though I was happy with nicking the animal, I wanted to be able to say I killed it, like a real hunter. I scanned the forest floor for a blood trail so that I could find where it had gone. After some time, I finally saw it, the trail heading eastward.
I ran along the trail, checking every so often to make sure I didnt lose sight of it. Deer blood had a certain smell to it, being able to notice it was key. I followed the trail till I came upon the deer, several feet ahead of me. If I wasn't careful I could lose this deer if it sighted me.
Taking an arrow from my quiver, I took aim. I wanted to make sure that even if I managed to kill the animal, that it would still viable to sell when I returned home. I trained my gaze on the animal and crept closer.
At a safe distance, I took in a breath, and let the arrow fly, watching as it sore through the air to its destination. The arrow luckily buried itself within the deer's side, but it still took off into the woods. I gave chase, knowing how it would be a little easier to kill now with that wound.
.
I wasn't going to let this creature get away from me, firing arrow after arrow, believing that no matter how many I shot, some were bound to hit. This hunt was truly just a trial and error test for me, and I was enjoying it, Seeing how much skill I retained, and what more I needed to learn.
The good thing was I noticed that with each shot I was getting more accurate, finding my rhythm with the bow in my hands. Each shot was being fine-tuned as I chased the animal down. It was as if I was adapting with every shot, though in the eyes of a professional I may have just looked silly, firing arrows all willy nilly like that.
As the chase went on, I decided to increase my luck. Sliding to a halt, I held three arrows in my hand, readying them to fire. I figured maybe my odds would be better If I show more than one at once. Wouldnt know unless I tried at least.
Lining up my shot I let the arrows loose, watching them sore together toward the deer. Out of the three, two missed, but that last one, Moseke blessings that last one hit. It landed right into the deer's neck.
The sound of the animal crashing into the forest floor mid-stride was accompanied by my delighted squeal. I didnt think I would be able to snag an impressive catch like this, and it would hopefully go to good use back in the city.
Claiming my prize, i hauled the animal over my shoulders and went back to the city, a smile on my face that was beaming with confidence. This trial was definitely a good trial. ➸

"Jackpot!"
I whispered, opening my eyes and scanning the area for where it was coming from. As I tried to zero in on the source of the sounds I was hearing, I slowly pulled the arrow back, holding it in place between my fingers. My eyes and ears traced the sound to a deer grazing a few yards in front of my position. Drudging up the confidence, I took a step and let loose the arrow, watching it soar through the air.
