History of the Company: Founded in 814 by Duan Marleon, most of the Company of the Crow are barely a step above brigands, and the rest are a step below. Duan was an individual with an unpleasant reputation and a notion that the world owed more than it was giving. The Crows were his way of carving it out. Nothing more. He insisted. Than what was fair. No more than he was owed.
Perfectly content preying on merchants and foreign caravans, the Crows painted themselves as bold hunters, carving out the Yari’s due from the unforgiving grasslands. Reality saw them taking merchant caravans whilst their guards slept and leaving the wounded to the predators. More than once, Duan sounded the attack on a foe that was negotiating their surrender, and his reputation only grew the blacker for it. Black enough, some rumours suggested, that even his own crew were fighting some doubts.
Only the company’s notoriously low standards kept it from vanishing altogether. More than willing to take anyone who could grip a blade and cling to a horse, and not necessarily at the same time, the Crows eked out a living chasing caravans across the grasslands. Their reputation took a turn for the better when Duan caught an arrow in the chest in early 817, leaving Ryeth Tiarsson, his long-time second in command as chief.
Tiarsson ceased some of the darker practices of his predecessor, though he remains a ruthless pragmatist with notoriously little tolerance for disobedience. The Crows have grown into a more disciplined fighting force under his command; though his fondness for daylight raids has only increased casualties. The company remains more than willing to take on new arrivals, if only to replenish the relentless casualties Yaralon’s wildlands impose.
Additional Information: Rumours persist that Ryeth had a hand in the death of his commander. These are untrue. It was Merim Leoc, now Ryeth’s second in charge, that fired the fatal shot. Ryeth suspects her but has never tried to confirm his hunch.
