Qit continued to chew on the frog corpse, unsure of what to do next. She fidgeted there in that swampy water, chewing on the crunchy, slimy pieces, occasionally spitting out the bones. The tears stopped flowing and she sniffled away the snot that came with it. Her eyes scanned the darkened bog she was in, while her mother watched from above, mewling from the branch she laid prone upon. Her kitten was lost. Time to see what she would do.
Qit'ria finished eating the frog, using the bog water to clean the blood and guts from her chest and face. She continued looking around, looking for the fireflies, but they were gone. She looked at the far end of the bog, recognizing it as the way she'd come. She needed to get back to her javelin. She'd dropped it, and knew her mother would strike her again if she came home without it. She sloshed through the bog, making her way onto the land.
There was no path now. No guide. She was on her own, and she couldn't remember the path the fireflies had brought her on.
