PC Family: Jasper and Samuel are cousins of Brent. Brent's mother Anja Forrester (maiden name: Ardiechy) is the elder sister to Lynond Rel Ardeichy, Jasper and Samuel's father.

Appearance

Brent has the rough muscular build of a man who spends most of his time outdoors and stands just shy of six feet. He has hard facial features and his straggly brown hair is only cut when it starts getting in the way of his work. He is usually dressed in travelling attire consisting of a heavy cloak and sturdy boots. Although Brent's hands are callused from his daily work outside, when he finally sits down to complete the finishing touches on a sketch, his lines are sharp and precise making the landscape come alive in its detail. Brent's embla is of a small compass tattooed just below his ear.

Prior to Ymiden 720, Brent walked with an obvious limp. As of Ymiden 8th to 30th, ether healing rains have healed the uneven gait, here.
"Healing of Brent's limp over the next several trials due to the healing rains of Svariella."

Personality

Brent has a strong sense of duty, loyalty and determination. Just because something is hard doesn't mean you should give up. If fact, you should push yourself even harder. He is always trying to find ways to be of value to his community. Part of this attitude stems from his overall lack of appreciation as a child, and that he for much of his life he was seen with a limp as people's first impression of him.

He is both respectful and wary of the wilderness, knowing how dangerous it can be out there. Earth, stone and trees are nature's way of providing resources for civilization but it is futile to assume the land can ever be truly tamed. The spirits of Melrath are often a wonder to him. Being alone in the woods with his drawing pad and charcoal allows him to feel more connected to the spirits.

Brent has a soft spot for beautiful women, but occasionally lacks confidence. Recently, however, he has been having both successes and shortfalls in the realm of romance. Where he had once been exceptionally nervous and falling for every whim, he has grown to realize that having more of a backbone can earn respect and weed out those that would not be good companions.

History

Brent Forrester was born in Melrath and grew up in a large family of seven, with five brothers and one sister. The Forresters owned a family logging business on the banks of Vynmur river, a couple hours outside of Raelia. Brent's father, Derek, had close ties with the House Imair family and did the majority of his business in the city of Raelia.

Shortly following Brent's 12th birthday, there was an accident while felling a tree. It was commonplace for the boys to be helping out Derek. The elder sons were learning to do some of the sawing by now, and young Brent's role was to help the strip the fallen tree of branches. However, through poor timing or miscommunication, when the tree came down Brent was struck hard by one of the branches and the force of the tree crushed his right leg. The family managed to get some help from the local healer, but for the longest while they weren't sure if Brent would ever be able to walk again.

Brent spent several weeks in bed wishing with every fabric of his being that he could just get up and play with the other boys. One day he noticed a piece of charcoal within reach and a scrap bit of wood which he started drawing lines upon. He soon grew fascinated with drawing, mostly out of sheer boredom, and his mother was kind enough to provide some basic supplies to keep him occupied. One of the neighbors came to visit to cheer Brent up and when she was about to leave she told him, "May you have Grandfather's patience." Brent became so frustrated and enraged that he threw a piece of charcoal at her.

But after two full seasons of being bedbound, Ashan came, and with it some feeling and movement in Brent's right leg. It was slow and painful at first, but Brent worked on it every day. There was keen determination in his eyes and he so badly didn't want to let his family down. At the beginning he could only hobble short distances before needing to take a break. Slowly he began to improve his endurance. Having been bedbound for so long at a critical time in his growth meant that he was physically more feeble than his older brothers. Soon it became clear that the distinct limp he had developed was not about to go away anytime soon. Some of his older brothers would tease him and call him "Bent Brent" as he limped along the trails.

Brent found solace in his ability to draw and frequently isolated himself from his brothers to capture the beauty of the woods. He found he felt closer to the spirits when he was alone, but in reality he was just relieved to be away from the teasing and mocking. Rarely was he expected to do the same type of work as his brothers, because even carrying something heavy would quickly tire him out due to the ever constant limp. His brothers resented this 'lack of work' and he felt equally unable to give back.

As time went on, Brent began to find new uses for his drawing ability. Instead of just drawing sketches of the forest or animals, he would start to map out common game trails and identify trees with particular properties or quality. Some areas that were marshy or had mostly saplings were no good for hard wood planks, so he would instead map out where the better trees were and plan out the easiest route to haul them. Even though he wasn't doing any heavy lifting, he was contributing far more than he had before and occasionally he even got a comment or two thanking him for choosing a downhill or flat route to haul the logs.

By the time he was 14, one of the pretty farm girls was passing by on her way to Raelia and Brent eagerly hobbled over to show her the map he had made from the Forrester's to Raelia. She was delighted by detail and little symbols representing the places she knew so well. Even as she was leaving Brent was glowing and he was no longer so afraid of his upcoming Embla for his 15th birthday.

---

Brent moved out of his father's house when he 25. Even though he had found ways to support the logging business, he still never felt appreciated in the same way that his older brothers were. Plus it was long overdue to make a name for himself. To his pleasant surprise, his brother Ted, two years older than himself, decided to join Brent in a small house in Alivilda. Ted wanted to set up an offshoot of the family business by constructing various wooden sheds, barns, and simple buildings in the small farming community.

Brent continued to find commissions for maps of the area so that he could continue his work. Clients could be as simple as farmers wishing for an accurate depiction of their land so they could decide how to clear, plant, and irrigate it. Other commissions were more dangerous to plot out mountain trails. Now and then Brent also helped out his brother Ted when a particularly critical piece of framework was going up.

As much as he enjoyed his life in Alivilda, Brent longed to make a name for himself and he couldn't help but look at the soaring arches of Raelia and wonder if his future might lie elsewhere.

Charting at the Speed of Travel: Brent has become so proficient at mapmaking that he can craft maps while traveling without impeding his speed. All geographic features and details he obtains this way must be within eyesight in order to be accurate. This means that when he is traversing large open plains, looking down from a mountain top or traveling by flight, he can cover much greater areas on his map compared to traveling on foot in a dense forest or jungle. On the other hand, if traveling by flight, any obscured forest trails or caves or hidden streams would not be within eyesight and therefore he would not know of them to add to his map. Brent can still make some broad assumptions, such as mountains usually form ranges and rivers flow downhill towards the sea, but these may be inaccurate if he was unable to see these features during his travels. On a similar note, any place names would need verification from someone who knows the land unless he happens to come to the same descriptive name (e.g. Black Tower).

Mount - Sleipnir

Pricing: 1 "average+" exotic mount (9 WP), average condition (due to injuries), good training
Sinir, a six-legged sleipnir, was acquired here after Brent proved his ability and resourcefulness as a cartographer to the Ydalir rangers of Melrath. Sinir bares healed scars and injuries from a particularly vicious battle where the sleipnir's Ragnari rider ultimately succumbed to their death. The sleipnir sustained substantial wounds which required the amputation of two of his legs and has been battle worn ever since. Brent may find it challenging to gain the sleipnir's trust as typically such mounts only ever have one rider in its lifetime.

Housing

Brent shares a house with his brother Ted, in Alivilda, Melrath. It's a large house for just the two of them (Tier 5), and they each use some of the rooms for their personal businesses. The large room is the dedicated open plan common room that includes a kitchen area, dining space and living space. Ted has an average sized bedroom and an average sized workroom. Brent has an averaged sized bedroom and a small room as his drawing space. This small room is littered with parchment and sketches with a large table in the middle.
Maps
Regional map of Melrath (Basic)
Brent's first detailed sketch of Melrath. Note that it is rather simple and there are some inaccuracies from his novice ability.

Starter Quest: You Say the Hill's Too Steep to Climb
In a tavern, Brent related to another man that he wished to map the entirety of Melrath, and perhaps beyond. Amused at this, the man confessed that he was a famous explorer. And he was aware of a certain peak in the mountains of Western Melrath that were unscalable, yet rumored by some winged folk to have a clear view of the entire vale. There, Brent might find inspiration, and know once and for all how accurate all the maps he'd already seen of Melrath were.

The peak had rarely been scaled to its very summit for several reasons. There are many challenges inherent to such an undertaking. First, one must pace oneself, and possess endurance to tolerate the thinness of the air up there. Second, one needs climbing skill. One needed hardy assistants, but not too many, to fight off the ferocious beasts and other dangers that were inherent in such a journey.

Should Brent see fit to undertake this journey, when he was ready, he could return boastful to that aging explorer. And perhaps that would lead to further opportunities...
