[Skill] Socialization

{{#pagetitle: Socialization}}

Image

=Overview=

Socialization is a skill that measures a person's skill at relating to and building relationships with strangers. Socialization concerns the building of a rapport and also awareness of social cues, and also the ease with which that is done. It is practiced in both a short-term (ie: immediate effect / in the moment) and long term (planning and organisation, maintaining relationships over cycles/arcs) manner.

As such, stronger socialization skill can benefit all the other sorts of interactive and socially driven skills, specifically with acquaintances. Socialization is almost a Logistics skill for relationships; it helps the pc to make sure that, in social groupings with non-friends, no acquaintances, colleagues, etc feel neglected and assists with the level of organisation which maintaining useful relationships takes. It benefits the socialite, spy or soldier, for example, all of whom function in a group.

There is no doubt that socialization goes hand-in-hand with many other skills. When used in a short term / immediate manner (eg: in a crowd / group situation), it links with skills like Detection and Persuasion. When used in a more long-term logistical organisation of relationships is helped by skills like Intelligence and Tactics.

==Functions of Socialisation==
Immediate Moment: In a group situation, the socialisation skill affords the pc the ability to understand the nature of, and function in, the group. It helps with 'working the room', with making sure that each person feels that they have been treated equally - or, of course, in deliberately making sure that a group member is excluded.

Short Term: This might be a situation where a pc is in a group situation for a length of time, or on a mission or journey. Here, the socialisation skill will help the pc to manage their part within the group and to influence group dynamics.

Long Term: In the long term, Socialisation really comes into its own as an organisation of relationships skill. From the shop keeper who needs to keep a good relationship with suppliers, to the Order of the Adunih member who has to maintain working relationships with large numbers of people. It is also, of course, very helpful in the reality of "office politics".

=Skill Ranks=

==Novice (0-25)==
<p style="font-size:14px">

At the lowest levels of socialization skill one may have difficulty in building a rapport with new people or reacting to social cues from people outside their circle of friends. They may have to try extra hard to have their existing friends feel understood and acknowledged. They will often have trouble keeping tabs on newer friends and reacting skillfully to social cues. In large groups, they may not be able to ensure that they give everyone time and / or may behave awkwardly. However, they will be able to 'work the room' slightly, either by making sure that they have a chat / socialise with a few people they didn't know, for example. This level of socialisation is much better at maintaining relationships in the immediate moment or short-term and is usually fairly limited.

</p style>

==Competent (26-75)==
<p style="font-size:14px">

Once reaching competence in socialization, the character will have more success at blossoming relationships outside their intimate circle of family and friends. They will have a secure network of loose contacts and acquaintances with whom they can relate to and attract to their side.

It is at this level that the character will begin to focus their socialization efforts one way or another. Will they maintain more business-minded relationships or a cadre of loyal converts through seduction and rhetoric? Or perhaps they will have begun to form a network of contacts through intelligence. The sort of relationship is only limited by a person's skill to maintain the interests of just such a nature.

They’ll react more adroitly to social cues, although the appropriateness of their reactions will often rely on their knowledge of etiquette or else the expectations of the other person. So support skills such as etiquette and psychology come into their own here as well.

</p style>

==Expert (76-150)==
<p style="font-size:14px">

As an expert socializer, the character will have no trouble getting along with just about anyone and is able to recall details of these friends and acquaintances with utmost ease, further strengthening their bonds and efforts to build the relationships. They'll have a wider circle that they can call on in times of need, and perhaps even be able to entice their loose acquaintances to help them in times of extreme need. Few can stay angry at an expert socialite for very long, and if they do, it's easily smoothed over by whatever means the socialite has to convince them that they're better off just staying friends with the individual.

At this level of expertise, the socialite will be able to relate to large groups of people, entertaining and attracting many to their side. They can generally rely on attracting the company of others, and being able to relate to new people as if they'd known each other for a much longer time.

</p style>

==Master (151-250)==
<p style="font-size:14px">

A master socialite can be everyone's friend. Through raw charisma, they can relate to and form relationships easily and almost without effort. Even the most egregious gaffes can be smoothed over and played off as an amusing joke, or an intentional point, to where those who'd normally be offended might be charmed by it instead.

At this level of skill, a master socialite will be able to facilitate relationships with a large variety of people, without regard for the services/favors/endearments that were rendered to the socialite. They are able to build and improve relationships by sheer charisma alone, although ancillary social skills help direct the sort of maintenance that is most effective.

Re: [Skill] Socialization

Informal Review / Comments:

I really like that there are distinct levels with actual advantages for investing in this skill. However, it mostly seems to focus on the perks (large group of friends, people doing favours, people not staying angry at you) rather than how a PC can build and create those networks.

For me, in real life, I've generally had a very small group of friends or many shallow friendships. To this day, I distinctly remember a "popular girl" sharing how she managed to do it, and how it was actually a lot of work for her. She said that she spent a lot of time organizing events, gatherings, activities, checking in on people, phoning, texting, finding/giving meaningful gifts, etc. It didn't just 'happen'. I would imagine there's a learning curve to being charismatic too. But it essentially opened my eyes to the idea that being 'popular' may partly be a personality thing but it can also be achieved through hard work. Just work in the right areas.

Anyways, ramblings aside, I think it would be beneficial for people who spend hours alone reading/writing on a roleplay site (and may or may not have as many friends as the general population outside of roleplay), to understand how PCs can achieve that distinct social and charismatic behaviour/skill.

Re: [Skill] Socialization

Thank you Brent for that thoughtful and considered feedback. Yes I was thinking more of the passive perks of socialization than the actual implementation haha. Good catch on your part.

I'll take that on board when I make my next pass on this dev. Will try to expand soon. Those were some very helpful suggestions.

Re: [Skill] Socialization

As well as Brent's suggestion regarding methods of developing wider and wider social circles, I think just a word here or there would be useful to clarify that it is a circle of "genuine" friends being described.

A rich, spoiled scion of some influential family may have hordes of "friends", yet be such an insociable cad that none of them truly like him.

Re: [Skill] Socialization

I just found out about this writeup.

There was some discussion about whether the Socialization skill is actually necessary as it wasn’t clear (to me at least) what it actually does or should do. I like the idea of Socialization as some sort of skill that involves managing relationships, calling in favors or such.

I think that has potential!

I’m not sure about the mention of wallflowers at Novice level though. A wallflower is someone who is introverted, which seems more like a personality trait than something that has something to do with a skill to me. And being an introvert of sorts does not automatically make you worse at social situations than other people.

You just don't feel the need to socialize as much.

I’m also not sure about tying the number of friendships and relationships you can have to a skill and making this about “genuine” friends (which is what Maltruism mentioned). People should be allowed to have as many friends and relationships as they want. A genuine friendship shouldn’t depend on a skill. Getting to know people and forming those friendships/relationships in the first place is something that can definitely get easier with experience/practice though – and happen faster.

Remembering details about your acquaintances is not something that is directly connected to a skill in my opinion either. You have a good memory, or you don’t (or you have Vri's Blessing and thus a perfect memory. :))

I see Socialization as more of a Logistics skill for relationships (I think that might be the ultimate purpose of this writeup, anyway?) that has something to do with making sure that none of your many friends and acquaintances feel neglected and organizing things. Perhaps, it could also involve things such as making small talk (in the addition to the calling in of favours mentioned above)? That’s something that gets easier with practice, but wasn't actually mentioned in the proposed writeup.

There's some overlap with other skills such as Persuasion and Etiquette. I like that as it allows for more variety and enables you to approach social situations from different angles rather than making Socialization a skill that you absolutely need to have.

Re: [Skill] Socialization

This is the latest pass with Socialization skill... I took out the references to wallflower and tried to tamp down on personality issues, and just focus on a person's ability to relate to new people and build relationships, and also setting this up as a sort of passive charisma skill. Tell me what you think.

Re: [Skill] Socialization

Ok - I like where you're going here, it's a good write up.

Can I suggest that it might be thought of as also including the ability to function in groups consisting of largely strangers and/ or passing acquaintances. If so - you could maybe add the following sort of thing to the skill levels.

Novice
At the lowest levels of socialization skill one may have difficulty in building a rapport with new people or recognizing social cues from people outside their circle of friends. They may have to try extra hard to have their existing friends feel understood and acknowledged. They will often have trouble keeping tabs on newer friends and frequently make faux pas' with those they haven't known a long time. In large groups, they may not be able to ensure that they give everyone time and / or may behave awkwardly. However, they will be able to 'work the room' slightly, either by making sure that they have a chat / socialise with a few people they didn't know, for example

I think that ability to "work the room" is really what this skill is about - and I see it as the short term use of the skill (making the connection in the party) and then the longer-term use would be maintaining that connection just enough that you gain whatever it is you were wanting to gain from speaking to them in the first place. I guess, then, the skill becomes about (as you say) making and maintaining relationships with strangers / passing acquaintances - but it means that you can do that from one gathering to another.

Make sense?

Re: [Skill] Socialization

In my opinion, the writeup looks much better now!

You mentioned recognizing social cues as one of the things that Socialization helps with. From my experience, interpreting/recognizing social cues and non-verbal communication is something that most people do not learn actively, like they would learn “normal” skills. A lot of people I know do this without even really thinking about it.

So, perhaps, Socialization could make you better at reacting to social cues instead and be about doing/saying just the right thing?

Furthermore, you mentioned making faux pas’ with people that someone hasn’t known a long time. I’m not sure if this is/should be an aspect of Socialization. I always thought that not making a faux pas/not behaving awkwardly mostly depends on the Etiquette skill and that a lack of Etiquette can make things awkward (although you wouldn’t necessarily have to feel awkward).

Unless I misunderstood what you meant? If that is the case, could you clarify, please?

I agree with Faith that Socialization is about “working the room” and making sure that none of your friends/acquaintances feel neglected. I think the idea of a management skill for relationships actually has a lot of potential. Perhaps that could be incorporated into the writeup more clearly?

Let me know what you think, and thank you for working on that skill!

Re: [Skill] Socialization

Socialization is a skill that measures a person's skill at relating to and building relationships with strangers. A great leader may have many underlings and able to inspire loyalty and acumen on a case by case basis, and a seductress may be able to convince someone to do something they may be reluctant to, and a courtier well versed in Etiquette may be able to fit into any crowd he finds himself in. Socialization concerns the building of a rapport and also awareness of social cues, and also the ease with which that is done. How does this look for a bit more detail on the "write up" bit? I've mushed Rak's and Doran's words together and put in stuff of my own. I'm happy for you to use or discard as much as you like!

Re: [Skill] Socialization

I like this skill writeup a lot!

The only thing I would change is this bit:

A great leader may have many underlings and able to inspire loyalty and acumen on a case by case basis, and a seductress may be able to convince someone to do something they may be reluctant to, and a courtier well versed in Etiquette may be able to fit into any crowd he finds himself in.

I'm not really sure what the function of this sentence is; based on where it's placed, it feels a little like it's implying that socialization can replaced leadership, seduction, and etiquette. I know that's not what you mean, but I'm just not quite sure what you mean here.

Aside from that, everything looks great to me.
