Praetorum's indignant anger at the greedy Wyvarnth turned into bafflement as the smaller ithecal started shoving the bread down his shirt. Was he... hiding it for later? To eat in his cell? "What are..." He trailed off as he saw the wyvarnth would not be dissuaded, and turned away, resolving next time to get there first and distribute the food fairly himself.
Ferret's outburst continued, and Prae grimaced, seeing the guards grow more and more agitated. He had just started to tense, preparing to get out of the way if the guards started to descend on them with drawn swords, when something odd happened; Sneabru, the wyvarnth still hoarding and not eating any of his damn bread, calmed the biqaj's outburst with a few short words.
Prae blinked owlishly at the suddenly calm biqaj, baffled. If his spark had been active, Suspicion might have wondered if the whole thing was an act, to trick one of the other prisoners into getting into trouble. But with the influence of his paranoid spark muted, Prae simply wondered if the two were friends. He'd thought that all the prisoners had been taken recently, but maybe these two had been in here longer. Or perhaps they'd just known each other before their incarceration.
Then, there was movement from the doors as even more guards entered, and Prae watched in silence as the brazier was removed and a fifth entrance to the room revealed itself.
All this ceremony was far too theatrical for Prae's tastes, especially considering the imprisoned audience, and he eyed the spears the four new guards held. Tempting... But futile, ultimately. His chances of being able to disarm one of them without getting skewered was nearly nothing.
The ithecal that emerged next was, to Prae's mind, most likely a becomer; Prae's shoulder ached at the memory of what one with a scorpion tail could do. Her robes were fine, and she wore a sword at her hip, but Prae vaguely suspected it was just for show. A becomer rarely needed weapons, in his experience.
The second figure was far stranger, two eyes sown shut and a third open in the centre of her forehead. The line of stitches that wrapped around her entire head was strangely even and symetrical, Prae thought, and he wondered...
The last figure was utterly normal in comparison, with no visible mutations or weapon. For a moment, Prae almost wondered if she might not be a mage at all.
Until she spoke, and Prae felt a warm, easy tendril of affection and comfort curl through his mind. For a moment, he almost wanted to give in to it, to feel the relaxed tranquility he could feel nudging at his mind.
No. Prae had been changed enough by his own sparks; he'd be damned if he let someone else's affect him as well. He bared his teeth in anger as he saw the faces around him melt into contentment. What was this? He'd been told that there was magic that could affect the mind, but he'd never experienced it before, never known how... invasive it felt. "This is wrong." He hissed urgently, trying not to alert the guards. "We're prisoners, damn it, and she's our captor."
Before he could say much more, Ferret stood again to shout, and all hell broke loose in the hall. Prae's eyes widened in shock as the Biqaj leaped up onto the table, ankle cuffs falling off of him as he did so. Then Sneabru tossed him a loaf of bread (what? why?) and the biqaj set off down the table. Out of the corner of his eye, Prae saw a guard start after the other prisoner, and made a split second decision.
With the chains around his wrists, he could only extend his hands down to the table, but that was enough for Prae to push himself to his feet, noting as he did so that his feet were unrestrained. As the guard started to pass behind Prae, the ithecal's tail, previously wrapped tight around his waist, uncoiled to its full eight foot length, and swept at the guard's feet, tripping the man up before he could catch Ferret. If the man avoided falling, Prae would slam his elbow into the guard's helm; if not, Prae would just plant a foot on the guard's chestplate, using his weight to keep the man down.
If the man dropped his weapon, Prae would take this opportunity to snatch it up with his tail.
The wyvarnth leaped up as well, and revealed exactly what it was he had hoarded all that bread for. Prae winced a little as the hard bread crashed against the metal helm, knowing from experience just how painful it was to have your helmet ring around your ears. All the same, Prae stepped away from the table and his (hopefully) fallen foe, and towards the fighting pair to help Sneabru.
It turned out, he needn't have bothered. The fight was over within moments, with the prisoner the victor. Out of the corner of his eye, Prae saw Ferret fly across the room, thrown by whatever magic the Paltharnum was using. As he was distracted by that, something bounce off of his forehead, and he clumsily grabbed at it, cursing the chains that limited his movement.
Half a loaf of bread. Rather hard, sturdy bread, as Sneabru had demonstrated.
"Hey, big guy!" Prae started as someone called his name from below, and looked down to see a biqaj he didn't recognize. They offered to help Prae remove his collar, which he very much wanted, but still, he hesitated, glancing around the room.
The room was in complete chaos; Guards and prisoners were fighting all through the room, and it was very clear which side had the upper hand. He wanted... what he wanted to do was rally the prisoners, and take this room as an encampment while they figured out what was going on. But already Prae could see that wasn't going to work. Unarmed and without magic, there was no way that they could overpower the armed guards, especially not the four in the center.
Fates.
Reluctantly, he turned back to the biqaj, and nodded. When they started to sprint towards one of the exits, Prae followed, narrowing his eyes at the guards that stood between them and the door. If they didn't get out of the way... Prae was angry. And more than ready to fight.
