Lathan Rustung was born in a City in the Trees, Desnind in the season Zi'da. The trees of Southern Idalos are like home to Lathan, albeit his upbringing was a bit rough with his drunkard father. His mother passed away when he was young, but she was a local herbalist that used to make some of the common medicine. His drunkard father, Auran Rüstung, was a mercenary with a talent over blades. Although the mercenary's lifestyle changed after settling down with Lathan's mother and enlisted as Desnind's Militia.
As one might expect, despite Lathan growing up into the life of a mercenary. He isn't a stranger to the Immortal Moseke, or at least the knowledge of her. Lathan respects the wild life to where if Lathan must kill game, only to do so for survival. Then to ensure that none of it goes to waste. That's perhaps one of the greatest lesson Lathan's old man taught the boy. It is a way of paying his respects to Moseke, albeit it is more likely to have gone unnoticed.
Before he became a mercenary, Lathan was training to be a hunter. To be handy with a bow and learn how to hunt for the people of Desnind. Although they didn't really start teaching him that until after he became a teen. An elder saw that the boy was fit to start learning the hunt, and what to do with the game once he's caught it. However, Lathan eventually saw that he should be a mercenary. The life of wander and discovery was a good temptress.
When Lathan was roughly fifteen arcs old, the boy felt like the way of the hunt wasn't what he thought. Bringing in the food was fine, hunting what they needed to survive. However he wanted to do something more, and so one particular day Lathan began to pray to Moseke for some kind of answer. That's when he met one of the Sev'ryn that came back from traveling beyond the forests. Her name was Ra'aven Gloombow, and she found him in a meditative state next to one of the trees. Noting the tattoos on his skin and how the tree on his left arm seem to branch out. One branch resembled the head of a wolf to symbolize that Lathan hunts like a pack of wolves. Yet she noted how many of those branches remain bare.
She nudged the boy with the bottom of her walking stick to wake him up. His sea-green eyes blinking away the drowsiness, Lathan squints against the blinding sun as he tried to look up at her. Yet she seemed to be more of a silhouette to him because it was hard to see.
"Trying to commune to the Great Mother are you?" Ra'aven asked as she already knew the answer. Yet she wanted him to say it. Lathan was reluctant, but he nods his head in agreement.
"Yes ma'am, I was hoping she could help me figure something out." The boy admitted, but even if he did try to lie Ra'aven had a keen insight with knowledge to back it up. Her expression was stoic as her eyes were calculative. Trying to analyze the boy to the best of her abilities. Ra'aven proceeded to kneel before Lathan to get on his level, and as he noted that her right arm seems a little thin. Like he could see her bone definition, and her eyes were like agate stones.
"Whatever trouble you might have, know that you can talk to the rest of us. Try talking to me for example, and i might have an answer for you." So the boy, albeit hesitant, told his concerns to her. Ra'aven was patient to listen young Lathan, and once done Ra'aven didn't speak at first. Letting silence linger around them to where it was making the teen nervous.
"Well then, if hunting is not your way. Then what do you think is your path." Now she tested him, a small morale test to determine if he was confident or not. He shrugged his shoulders, which wasn't a good sign for him until he spoke.
"I am not sure yet, but I know it is not this. What I don't know is what my other options are." A smart answer, one that Ra'aven wasn't expecting and she understood what Moseke would want. Ra'aven's mind had experienced the horrors outside of this forest, and how twisted magic can be despite being a spellcaster herself. So it got her into thinking, a dangerous line of thinking, but a risk that Ra'aven was willing to take.
"In that case, how about I teach you in some of my line of work?" Lathan was a little confused and expressed verbally to which she laughed. Basically, Ra'aven took him as her apprentice by spending nearly an arc later. To teach the teen on the fundamentals of a certain magic called Abrogation. As well as allowing Lathan learn the disciplines of Defiance and Transmutation as they would more likely be something he would be forced to defend against.
Eventually, on 715 Arc, Lathan took his Initiation. As it is expected for any users of Abrogation to actually use it, Lathan had to endure figurative hell. First they met at a secluded area of Southern Idalos.
It was about mid-trial with the sun climbed high in the sky, yet the vibrant green tree canopy shields most of the sunlight. Both Ra'aven and Lathan finds themselves in a secluded area. An area cleared of debris, and with Ra'aven communicating with the earth. After making sure that Lathan was positioned in the center, Ra'aven wanted to double check with him.
"Now are you sure that you're ready? This test will be a dangerous one, and if you mess up then your life can be in danger." Ra'aven question him as she remembers back when she was initiated. The process from her end was simple. Just confront him with two different spells and let him 'feel' the ether and learn how to counter it.
"Everything in life is gonna have some kind of risk. Besides, it'll take more than just some stones thrown at me to keep me down." Lathan spoke confidently, hoping to reassure her to some degree. In truth she wasn't assured. Still, with a sigh from her lips. Ra'aven communicated with earth and fire in conjunction. Causing the earth beneath Lathan to soften and turn into mud. Causing Lathan, who started to wave his arms to stable himself, to start sinking into the mud. At the same time, Ra'aven causes fire starting from a spark in the sun's rays to a fan of fire spreading towards Lathan's direction.
Lathan basically had to flatten himself onto the mud to avoid the sheet of flames directly. Yet he could still feel the ether from the heat and earth that now threatens to swallow him up. Or was he feeling both? Really the immediate presence Lathan could feel is this intense heat from the fire. The ether was definitely present here, but the trick as Lathan later discovered was to 'feel' the nature of the spells and defend himself against it. Not to mention as Lathan was conflicting himself is how can he defend himself against something like this mud pit? As time went on, the sheet gradually lowered closer to Lathan's body. Hardening the mud and cracking in place. The pressure of being either burnt or crushed was real as the pressure around his body that's in the mud grew tighter.
It came very close with his skin suffering first degree burns, and the pressure around his upper body grew tighter like it was trying to crush his ribs. Even more he could feel his heart beating against the pressure. Sweat covered his skin, yet his hands were most restrained by the mud. Yet, with his knowledge and feeling his spark ignite. Lathan understood that Defiers uses communication through ether to the elements. So technically the 'mud pit' is actually a pit of ether. As for the fire, Lathan sees the source, and so with great effort on his part. Lathan aimed with one hand in the general direction where the fan of fire was pouring out of, and produces a misshapen wall of ether condensed enough to ward the flames away. Allowing Lathan to try to climb his way out of the pit, even to go as far as creatively producing a second barrier with his other hand inside the pit just at the top layer. He was getting dizzy from the use of magic, yet he maintained concentration as he uses this second barrier of ether to climb his way out. Only to find that there was a hole in the barrier, yet it was enough to where Lathan could stand on this barrier and jump to all ground. Upon that, Laucian completed his Initiation. Albeit he was mildly burned like he's been out too long in sunshine, bruised all over his upper body, and most of all very tired as he could no longer keep up with either barriers.
Eventually, come the age of 18 of the 717 Arc, Lathan decided to choose his own path. To travel where chaos brews to quell it if he can. Of course, there is no other place like Yaralon. A land corrupted by magic or so the rumors say. That, is the place Lathan designated to be the beginning of his journey. He prays that his journey won't end in this city. Before he left the welcoming forest of Desnind, Auran gifted his son the family heirloom passed on for generations.
For two years, Lathan has made good progress in establishing contracts and completing them. Sometimes they were easy and simple. Others, though rare, tend to be a bit more complicated. Lathan traveled throughout the Eastern Idalos as his work sometimes takes him to hunting specific beasts. At least the good news about the contracts is that there never is a dull moment in Lathan's opinion. However the competition between the mercenaries have begun to grow fierce which results in Lathan's secretive approach regarding his contracts.
