[Solo] Devin's Treasure Hunt, Part 3

Part 1
Part 2

Zi'da 3, Arc 719

Devin was pulled out of a most pleasant dream rather abruptly because Heidi the goat was bleating loudly. He rubbed his eyes, still somewhat tired – the incident with the Kudi’Eltu that had snuck into the tent had made it hard for him to fall asleep because he’d been so worried that it would happen again – and nudged Aidan who was cuddled next to him. The student murmured something that was absolutely incomprehensible, and then he turned away from him again in order to continue sleeping. Devin huffed loudly.

“Wake up!” he told Aidan and nudged him a bit harder. “I think that your goat’s hungry!”

“I don’t want to!” Aidan murmured. “It’s your turn, and besides, she’s your goat anyway! We bought her with your money, remember? If you want her to shut up, go and take care of her yourself for a change! I’m not your servant!” he muttered, and that was it. No matter what Devin did, the student refused to get up – or even look at him, and finally the thief realized that he had no choice, at least not if he didn’t want to the student to be mad at him and risk that he stopped sharing the tent (and more) with him. He would have to work!

Sighing, he climbed out of his cosy sleeping bag, put on his clothes and his boots and walked outside, breathing in the fresh air. This early in the trial, it was still cool and relatively pleasant, and the grass was a bit wet. Heidi who pulled their cart since they had been unable to acquire a horse or a donkey was still where they had left her the evening before, tied to a tree so that she wouldn’t be able to run (or get stolen as easily).

Devin went to the river that was just a few metres away to get a bucket of fresh water that he placed in front of Heidi, glaring at her as she did so as if it was her fault that she was hungry and thirsty. Following that, he set a bowl of food down in front of the goat. He had just reluctantly grabbed a brush in order to take care of Heidi’s fur (not that she had a lot of it) because Aidan always insisted how important that was when his other three travel companions finally left their tents.

“Back home in Scalvoris my neighbours’ rooster always woke me up”, Talieson muttered. “That goat is even worse though!” The bard was wearing a pair of black boxer shorts, his shirt white was still unbuttoned, and he held a toothbrush in his hand. Behind him stood Des’trill and Mik’hail, the two Sev’ryn nurses who were also their local guides.

They were already fully dressed and had their armour on. Unlike the three foreign wannabe treasure hunters, they were wide awake and looked as if they were ready to go.

Which they probably were.

Re: [Solo] Devin's Treasure Hunt, Part 3

The following couple of breaks were fairly uneventful, except that Heidi insisted on doing her business just when they had decided to stop, rest and eat a bit. His companions had complained quite loudly, so Devin had very reluctantly gotten a shovel, removed it and dumped it into a nearby bush – since Aidan had refused to and insisted that they split all the work equally (apart from persuading Heidi to pull the cart, since Aidan was the only one who knew something about animal training).

Devin couldn’t even be mad at him for long because the student smiled so radiantly at him that it nearly melted his heart whenever he did what he was told and decided to do what was supposedly his share of the work. Feking emotional blackmail! Who had Aidan learned that from?

Right. From him.

Everything went just fine, except that Talieson began to look grumpier and grumpier the closer they got to where they would supposedly find their treasure (Des’trill and Mi’khail had finally agreed on where they were supposed to go, after arguing about it for approximately a trial – sometimes Devin wondered how good they really were at reading maps).

The bard also began to frequently stop in order to scratch his right leg quite vigorously, the thief noticed.

When Devin walked directly next to him by chance after a while, he could see that the other man had a rash – a bright red, very painful looking rash that had tiny, equally red bumps on it. He looked at Talieson. The bard looked at him, and then Devin remarked, furrowing his brow a little, “That doesn’t look too good. How did that happen if you don’t mind me asking?”

“I probably brushed against some sort of plant by accident”,
Talieson muttered under his breath and began to scratch his leg again, so furiously that his nails left bright red marks on it which didn’t exactly help when it came to making the rash better. On top of being in a bad mood, Devin observed, the older man also seemed to be embarrassed because he had that ugly rash.

As a Blessed of Delroth, as someone who was devoted to the Immortal of Vanity, Devin agreed that he should be!

Re: [Solo] Devin's Treasure Hunt, Part 3

“Let me take a look”, Devin remarked, quickly took his backpack off, set it down on the ground in front of him and started to rummage through it. He only realized what he was doing somewhat belatedly. He had pretended to be a doctor for so long that he had automatically entered doctor mode upon being confronted with a medical problem.

Fek!

Doctors were good people. He didn’t want to be a good person though! On the other hand, was he really a good person if he treated bad people? Talieson was a terrible adulterer after all!

Since when had he cared about questions of morality anyway? Talieson was his friend and his roommate (and he had been something more in the past), and that was all that really mattered!

He rummaged through his backpack some more and then some more and finally produced a jar that was filled with some sort of thick white salve that smelled quite intense. He was about to simply smear the salve across the rash and leave it at that when something occurred to him. It would probably take a while for the rash to stop itching, and Talieson might scratch more in the meantime and make everything worse in the process.

He didn’t exactly have a lot of self-control!

So, he produced a bandage and wrapped it around the other man’s leg that he had generously covered with the salve beforehand. Having done that, he stepped away from the bard in order to critically eye his work, hands on his hips.

Yes, that should do it. That would hopefully keep Talieson from scratching!

He looked at the bard and his other companions who had stopped doing whatever they had been doing in order to watch him and bowed deeply as if he had just accomplished a most amazing feat.

He quite liked being admired!

“Let’s continue!” he remarked brightly and gestured for them to follow him.

Re: [Solo] Devin's Treasure Hunt, Part 3

The sun already stood high in the sky when the strange group of wannabe treasure hunters (plus a goat) finally neared their destination. At least Devin thought that they had reached their destination. In front of him, in a clearing in the forest, stood a couple of ruins.

What was he supposed to do now though?

Where exactly would the treasure be?

He looked at Aidan. Aidan was a university student. University students were clever, right?

Maybe he’d be able to help?

“What do you think? Should we search the ruins first or dig a hole in the ground? I’ve never done this before”, Devin admitted before he decided, mostly because digging a hole seemed to be a lot more work than walking through a ruined building, “I’ll enter the ruins and you …”

He’d wanted to tell his companions to take the shovels they had brought and start digging.

He stopped abruptly when he noticed something though, something that worried him a little, to be honest.

He stared at Des’trill who pointed at something in front of them, her brown eyes wide with shock.

“Guys”, the pretty Sev’ryn said, her voice trembling slightly. “Look at that! I think that … I think that someone’s been … no, this can’t be!”

Devin came closer in order to take a look at what had shocked her so. Monsters? A group of bandits? Poisonous plants? Carnivorous plants? Poisonous and carnivorous plants?

A moment later, his eyes widened as well. For a moment, he felt as if he would faint. It was much worse than monsters, bandits or poisonous and carnivorous plants!

It was … it was a … it was a large wooden chest!

A very large treasure chest that was covered with all kinds of carvings stood in front of the ruins. It was open, and there didn’t seem to be anything left inside, at least at first glance.

Oh no!

Somebody had already been there!

Overview

Extra kudos for Heidi Goat! The very first sentence convinced me to go back and read the previous two parts in the series. I find the story super entertaining. The wannabee treasure hunters aren’t too skilled and it shows. You give them so much life and the goat adds an irresistible comedic touch. An interesting thing with Devin is he doesn’t seem to know himself. There’s an intriguing contrast between his wish to be a brave expedition leader and the prestige-free way he accepts to share the work and admits to lacking experience at treasure hunting. The text was pleasantly easy to read and the tone felt right for the story. A good read!
