• Mature • The Webs We Weave

Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

Re: The Webs We Weave

Llyr switched his focus from the fractures and his arcane study to the exchange of information regarding his stalker. He told Kasoria of the shadow, of his hunches and the rumors that circulated around an unnatural woman. He shared the various informants that he’d put on the task, not trials ago, but seasons ago. The Quacian almost explained his true theory on the matter… but then he chose not to.

Kasoria didn’t need to know about the past that led to something like the shadow woman. He didn’t need to know about the chains, or the slaves, or the brothel, or the cave-in, or any of it. He only needed to know enough to handle it, as the older man so precisely put it.

When the human smoked… Llyr glanced about, nervously, then decided to not say anything. He didn’t see Dean Rush anywhere. Though he did lift a hand and wave it to disperse the thin smoke. His pulse thrummed in his pointed ears, fast and merciless. The fever still dappled his perfect skin with beads of sweat.

“An’ what we got planned? When the time’s right, how…”

Llyr shook his head, even as the words trailed off. He placed a hand at his lips, concerned for a moment that he might retch again.

“If yeh can’t do this, shut it down now, an’ I’ll find another wa-”

“No,” interrupted Llyr in a firm tone. It was the same kind of no he gave to Hazel during their journey across Etzos – whenever the girl wanted to sleep more or asked if they could go home to the southern continent. The biqaj frowned, and crossed his arms in front of his chest, obviously not wanting to hear Kasoria’s concerns. He snorted but didn’t respond otherwise.

“You don’t have to concern yourself with that.” Llyr’s eyes had changed color, away from the silver, and to a yellow-orange blend that almost glowed for how vivid the pigmentation was. He noticed Kasoria pointedly looking at the vomit. Llyr sighed. He let go of some tension in his shoulders that had caused him to stiffen in posture.

"Worked wiv' junkied 'afore. Don't end well. They fuck up. Can't keep their eyes onna' job. Youse got... all this shite, fuckin' countries away from the Big Rock. An' now yer studyin' so deep into these books y'might as well be a worm. On toppa' all that, yer tryin' t'keep our plan goin' an' got this shadow bitch after yeh, an'-"

“I told you, I can fucking handle it. With or without your aid. If you can’t trust me enough to trust that then I do-”

CRACK

The slam of Kasoria’s hands against the table caused Llyr to involuntarily jump.

The irises of the biqaj’s eyes changed immediately to a brilliant red. So vivid and bright, the hue broke past the irises and submerged his eyes in the red-bloody color. Llyr had shut up, but he stood from his chair… as if to remind the old assassin of their height difference, by towering over the shadowy killer. His halo brightened and his dragonfly wings fanned outward.

When he recognized the hint of tenderness in Kasoria’s features, Llyr also eased somewhat. His wings folded again. His halo returned to an easy candlelight sheen, rather than nearly causing a blinding flash. Llyr stopped glaring, and he set his fingertips lightly against the table, near Kasoria’s fingers. He leaned forward to meet the other man in a similar rebellious stand like before when the Etzori had first stepped into Viden.

"We fuck this up, we're both dead. Me an' youse. I ain't gonna let that happen. So... if yer not capable... lemme know. I'll spare yeh that."

Llyr’s features tensed. His crimson eyes glanced over Kasoria, then he spoke so lowly in his deep, southern accented voice that the words rumbled in his chest, “It won’t happen. Take care of this shadow for me, and you’ll see I’m far more capable than you even realize, red-blood.”

“Now, go,” he demanded. For in the distance, he could recognize the sound of people approaching. Not just one pair of boots, but three. They likely had heard the smack on the table, if not smelled the smoke or had some sort of magical trigger go off because of it. Llyr would be in trouble, there was no doubt, and he would have to explain his way to be allowed to continue studying as he was; to not be expelled or refused further entry to the aracana section.

But first, he had to get Kasoria to disappear. If he was seen with the man, there might be worse repercussions than mere chiding of a librarian or punishment from the dean... for it could appear as if he were selling away the secrets in the arcane tomes. It could easily be spun into a crime of Viden.

“You cannot be here. This is a restricted section, and your little theatrics-” he wryly smiled at that, fully aware of how ironic it was that he was calling Kasoria theatrical. “-means you must go before they see you. If they find you here, they might arrest us and this is the city of the Immortal, Yvithia. You do not want to fall into her grasp. Leave. I will find you when I have made meaningful progress with our plan.”

Re: The Webs We Weave

That'll have to be enough. Even if it ain't.

There was a small, huffing sound from the little man that Llyr so amply dwarfed. He'd never tried that shite with him before; Kasoria always thought he'd have more originality in him that that. Simple, basic, blunt intimidation. Maybe forty years ago, that could have worked. But then, when Kasoria looked up into shadow and sweat, he could see the boy was not himself. His eyes were as red and bloody as Kasoria's were pitch. He stared down and they seemed to glow... yet Kasoria did naught but blink and subtly, carefully, almost imperceptibly stiffened.

Don't be stupid, boy.

“It won’t happen. Take care of this shadow for me, and you’ll see I’m far more capable than you even realize, red-blood.”

There it was again. That odd... insult, he supposed, from the Quacian's home. As if it really mattered, what color their claret was when the blades bit. They were mortals; they were children of men, sons of clay and water. Not monsters fashioned from ether, believing themselves to have rights to all Idalos because of that trick of creation. Kasoria shook his head and stood, forcing the younger man to move away. With his wings and eyes and halo of light, he knew most would not consider Llyr human at all. Kasoria knew different. He had seen different.

He's mortal. He's a man. That makes him weak, too. But that's how we get strong.

Again the Quacian dismissed him, and again the Raggedy Man let it slide off his skin. Grudgingly. Once this was over, and Webb was in the ground, the two of them would be having a long and pointed conversation. He could see the slow panic rising behind the Quacian's eyes. Not his concern about being discovered, though Kasoria wasn't too keen on that, either. No, it was the drunk's fear of the bottle running low; the addict's terror of his pouch coming up empty. He was looking around for watchers, but also for flasks, skins, bottles, anything-

"I'll handle the shadow."

-then he felt Kasoria's hand on his shoulder, and turned around.

He saw the Raggedy Man stretch out a hand and touch it to the nearest shelf of books. The little man breathed in and Llyr could see this was something he'd practiced. As he watched, the palm glowed... and then rippled... and the ripple seemed to spread across the multitude of scrolls and spines and loose papers as if that vertical surface were a single, solid, liquid pool. One that had a stone dropped in the middle of it, under Kasoria's palm. The ripples spread out, and the pool seemed to part, under his hand and-

"Youse look to yerself," the Etzori said, black eyes showing more concern than one would credit. The portal opened wider and wider, until it was big enough for him to step through, and Llyr got a glimpse of the vast ocean beyond it. "You need me... y'know how t'find me."

A crooked smile flitted across his face. Not where or even when, but just how. Because they were both in the know, now. They could both simply open up a portal and Cross to the other. Time and space were no longer obstacles; they were tools to be utilized, at worst minor inconveniences. The little man shivered dramatically as he stepped through the cold, quivering vacuum, and with a pop! the portal closed behind him.

It was cold in Etzos, but not as cold as Viden. Kasoria stood in his empty bedroom. No cats, no signs of life save that which he'd chosen to leave. He wasn't smiling anymore. He stood there, in the dark and the silence, thinking furiously. This... would not do. Not at all.

Loot/Losses: -4 WP for 1 seasons worth of drugs (good quality).

Injuries/Conditions: Nausea will pass in a few hours or with some rest.

Consequences: A messy study area.

Comments: Llyr shines as always in this thread. The prose is chock full of his thoughts and impressions, yet it all flows narratively from Llyr's posts to Kasoria's without missing a beat. The conflict of not knowing whether Kasoria will kill him or not if he tells his secret makes for a great internal struggle that persists throughout the thread. I hope to see this plotline to its conclusion. The way it's constructed from one point to the inevitable end is really well done. I do think this feels like the beginnings of a turning point.

Renown: none

Skill Usage: Appropriate to level.

Loot/Losses: none

Injuries/Conditions: none

Consequences: Kasoria's bond to Llyr has been affirmed, yet it seems it won't be long before Kasoria's power outstrips Llyr's usefulness.

Comments: I love the way Kasoria opened up the thread by slamming Llyr's book shut. The way that was done, calmly with no rancor or malice yet with force seems to epitomize Kasoria to me. The internal struggle of Kasoria's paranoid spark is well represented here again, as he appears to struggle between his need for security and his gratitude toward Llyr. I just wonder what will happen when Llyr has nothing more of value to give?
