• Solo • Menochoros/Blades II

Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

Menochoros/Blades II

Ashan 114, Arc 720

Since Bella Tollan, the woman that he wanted to spar with that trial, would be finished with her current training session before long, the Mortalborn made his way downstairs from the first floor where he had watched a Menochoros class in order to pass the time. What he had heard and seen had greatly appealed to him. It had been a while since he had learned a new combat style, several decades, in fact. Maybe, he decided, he would sign up for one of Lida’via’s classes before he left the Fitness Centre for the trial, but for now he made his way to the front desk where Ashton Reed, the receptionist was still sitting and going about his work.

The human looked up from the form that he was filling out for a moment and smiled at him before he focused on his work again. The Mortalborn himself was just about to sit down in one of the chairs next to Ashton’s desks when he noticed someone approach from the opposite direction. Bella Tollan was a tiny redhead. When he had first met the human woman, he had not been sure about fighting her, but he had quickly come to the realization that she could hold her own in combat. She would never be his match – few would ever be, which was not arrogance, but a mere fact – but she came closer than most, at least.

“Professor”, she greeted him and smiled at him, her green eyes twinkling. She was dressed in a simple grey top and pants, clothes that she would be able to move in comfortably and effortlessly, and she wore her hair in a thick braid so that it would not get in the way during a training session or a fight. “I take it that we’ll work together next? I can’t see anybody else here, at least”, she remarked and let her gaze drift across the room for a moment before it settled on him again, and she looked at him questioningly.

“That is correct”, he replied and inclined his head, returning the smile. He had heard rumours, that Bella was or had been involved with Lord Wyllum Tariq, an aristocrat with a love of alcohol, but he had never been particularly interested in gossip. Bella was quite a competent swordswoman, and that was all that mattered to him. “None of my usual sparring partners are available at the moment, and Mister Reed said that you might have time”, he explained. He regularly came to the Fitness Centre to train, for a number of reasons.

“I do”, Bella confirmed before he she gestured for him to follow her. “One of the private rooms down the hallway is empty at the moment”, she told him as they walked. “To be honest, I look forward to sparring with you again, Professor. It’s been a while”, she continued and laughed before she opened the door to the training room and entered.

Doran followed a few steps behind her.

Re: Menochoros/Blades II

After he had changed into an outfit that was a little more suitable for fighting than the suit that he had worn before and that would offer a certain amount of protection in an adjacent changing room, the Mortalborn met with Bella in the center of the sparring room where the human woman was already warming up. He nodded at her before he positioned himself opposite of her and did the same. There were people that considered going through such exercises prior to a training session to be unnecessary and a waste of time, people that refused to believe that warming up really helped prevent injuries. He considered such to be a foolish attitude.

He always went through his exercises in the same order, stretching his legs first before he executed a number of arm swings and stretches and closed his eyes for a few moments in order to inhale and exhale deeply, calm down and focus. Finally, he retrieved a long sword from the weapons stand that was located next to the door. The exercises had not exhausted him – he had moved beyond the point where being physically active for a quarter of a break had a major effect on him, or any effect at all, a long time ago. He just felt pleasantly warm and content.

“Ready?” Bella asked him and cracked his smile when she noticed that he had stopped before she grabbed a sword of her own and faced him again. The human’s signature weapon was the rapier; that trial she would fight with a two-handed blade though, just like he did.

“Ready”, he replied and inclined his head slightly before he settled into his stance and finally moved to attack, without a warning. They had decided to always start their fights like that when they had first met in order to add a little element of surprise to their training sessions.

His first attack was a strike or a cut, executed slightly from above. Unlike some less experienced swordsmen he did not simply swing his arms and attack wildly, foolishly hoping to overwhelm his opponent somehow. His attack was controlled, powerful and utterly precise, and he struck with the edge of his sword rather than twisting his blade mid-swing, another mistake that a less experienced swordsman might have made. He moved his sword first (moving his body first would possibly have created an opening) before he made a step forward. His foot landed at exactly the same time that his blade met Bella’s before he quickly moved into a guard in order to react to the woman’s counterattack.

When she attempted to strike diagonally across his body, towards his torso, he stepped off to the side and forward before he struck downwards, thus intercepting the oncoming attack. At the same time, he aimed his sword at her upper body as simply defending yourself was never enough. If you only parried, your opponent would only attack you again and again. For that reason, his defenses usually were attacks at the same time.

Bella reacted, perhaps a little more slowly than he would have reacted, before she attacked once more.

Re: Menochoros/Blades II

They fought for the better part of a break, attacking and parrying, nearly without pause and barely slowing down, apart from towards the very end. Bella was always a little slower to react than he was, but she did manage to surprise him once or twice, although she never managed to gain the upper hand and win their match. Over the course of the centuries, he had learned to parry almost any attack, no matter which weapon it was executed with, including weapons that surpassed the size and ability of his sword.

The human woman was not irritated when she finally found the tip of his blade pointing at her chest though, but only laughed before she inclined her head, accepting her defeat. A few moments later, they returned their swords to the stand by the door and proceeded to sit down on one of the benches that were located at the back of the room in order to relax as they were somewhat tired now – and talk about that trial’s fight and analyze it a bit, as they had previously done.

“This was interesting”, the redheaded woman remarked and shook her head slightly before she grabbed the towel that was lying on the bench next to her in order to wipe the sweat off her face. “We should do this regularly again from now on. I miss fighting someone that actually challenges me. One of these trials I will win though”, she added, laughing again before she looked at him questioningly, waiting for his answer.

“Perhaps”, he replied before he amended his previous statement as he had quite enjoyed sparring with her once more, and sparring and training helped balance out all the mental work that engaged in (he was currently conducting research for a thesis, regarding the use of racial blood in alchemy). “Actually, I would love to. Next seven-trial or the seven-trial after that, maybe?” he asked and raised an eyebrow fractionally.

Once she had replied and told him that that worked (and they had talked some more), he shook her hand and bade her farewell, thanking her for a good fight, before he made his way to Ashton’s desk once more.

He had made his decision.

In addition to his usual activities at the Fitness Centre (that mainly involved sparring with different people), he would join one of Lida’via’s next training sessions as a combat style that involved discipline and meditation seemed quite beneficial to him (and might also aid him when it came to his chosen magic).

Once the necessary arrangements had been made, he left the building in order to return to his apartment in the Obsidian Prism – and his private laboratory, in order to work on his research once more before he finally engaged in more relaxing activities (and enjoyed one of his cook Elias’ delicious meals).

Comments: I very much enjoyed this little sparring solo. Bella Tollan always intrigued me as an npc since I learned about her, and it's fun to watch Doran interact with her. I very much anticipate Doran's training session as he begins to learn about Menochoros. I really feel it's a great fit for a hand-to-hand fighting style for him. Also, I'd enjoy seeing more of Bella as well :D

Great writing and enjoy the points and knowledges!
