• Solo • One foot in front of the other

Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

One foot in front of the other

2nd of Saun, 720th Arc
Late morning
Viden, Academy, Fitness Centre

He didn't like this place. Not because this place was a bad place or because everything in the room somehow got him upset. No. He didn't like it here because 'here' carried with it a lot of personal memories that he'd rather forget. Memories of him being in an even worse state than he was now. Luckily, most of the initial trials were barely a haze in his memories but even then there were bits and pieces there that he'd rather never remember ever again. Sintih's illusion took in a deep breath as the Ellune, Vesram, pushed Sintih's wheelchair through the door leading into the section of the fitness centre that was focused fully on the physical recovery of patients: the physiotherapy wing.

"Alright. Go and take a seat over there." Vesram's voice was deep, which went well with his large and muscular build. The Ellune pointed past Sintih to one of the many benches placed around the main room. Here, unlike most of the fitness centre, the floor was padded with mats and furs, to prevent further injuries when falling, something that happened a lot here. Something that Sin remembered doing a lot here. He put his weight on his hands and pushed himself out of the wheelchair. Using the cane to lean as he went, Sintih made his way over to the bench. The benches here were designed a little wider than regular and long enough for an adult male Eidisi to lie down on it without his feet or head touching the edges of it.

As he turned and sat down, Sin could see Vesram putting the wheelchair aside so it wouldn't be in the way of anyone else. There were a few others at work here but Sin had learned quite quickly that staring was appreciated even less here. The Eidisi nurse knelt down in front of him once he'd sat down properly. He'd managed to make her smile earlier but things between them were still quite strained, something that wasn't made any easier considering what he remembered was supposed to happen next. "I'm just going to move your legs a little for you. Just relax, try not too resist but let me know if something hurts or feels strained when I move it. Ok?" At least, Sin thought, she managed to sound professional. He nodded and placed his hands behind him on the bench, leaning back slightly. He remembered how this would go otherwise.

Lilea softly grabbed one of his legs and started to move it. This was called assisted movement or motion or something. Doctor Tholian had explained it all the trial before, which had mostly been a repeat of the explanation he'd gotten the cycle before. The movements started off small, tilting his foot, lifting his leg up, stretching it. None of it hurt or felt strained or anything, which meant no reactions from him, which meant she continued on to other exercises. Sin did his best not to look down on her too much while she working and instead studied the empty wall in front of him. Vesram stood a little off to the side, watching Lilea work and probably grading her as well. He could feel his leg being turned inside and hooked behind his other leg, in a sort of halfway lotus position, before being put back in place. The movement was repeated with his other leg.

As her hands moved across his legs, applying soft pressure in different areas and moving and pushing them around, Sin did notice he was beginning to react to her movements, although not a place that required any physiotherapy. No wonder he'd reacted so quickly to her touch the last ti- No. Nope. Sin cut off the thought by shaking his quickly, eyes closed. "Did that hurt?" Lilea sounded worried as she immediately froze, holding his leg still in its position. "No. Thinking me." He signed at her, his illusion picking up on the extra light being provided to the crystals in his face by blushing.

Re: One foot in front of the other

Once the testing was done, it was time to get to the real deal. Lilea set his foot down at the end of her exercises and stood up, making space for Vesram. "I'm sure you're familiar with how this goes." It didn't sound as if it was meant to be offensive but Sin felt those words sting nonetheless. "We'll go through the motions, the same ones Lilea did with you, but you'll do them on your own. If at any point you feel pain or you feel tired, just let us know and we'll take a moment. We're not racing anyone, we're not competing. Take as much time as you need." He seemed to stress that last part a little more, as if he knew exactly how Sin thought about these kinds of things. Sin nodded and they were off.

Vesram instructed him and he moved. It was all leg movements which could be done from his seated position. Lifting his legs off the ground one by one, standing on tiptoes, crossing one leg over the other, the lotus position. Twists and turns, all of it so simple. Easy. It was annoying Sintih. Not because the exercises were simple. No. Annoying because he knew that half a break of these simple exercises and he'd be exhausted. And they hadn't even started with the walking. Another half break of moving around the room. He didn't relish the thought of falling, he didn't want to fall, but he already knew that's where it would end up. Experience told him so. Vesram continued on with the exercises and Sintih follow his cues. Lilea stood to the side, observing. In between two exercises, when Vesram found a trill to give him a moment to breathe, Sin looked over at her. She was worried, or at least that's what he could read from her face. He smiled at her and gave her a quick thumb's up but the exercise continued before she could respond.

Half a break later, Sin's illusion was breathing heavily. It wasn't that he was covered in sweat or anything. The exercises were simple. It was just his asterism that couldn't keep up. Surrounded by a mosaic of crystals, his asterism sputtered and flared, sending light and energy downward, trying to keep up with the demands of the exercise. "Ok. Now we're just going to walk around. Think of it as a cooldown exercise. Just move at your own pace. We'll be right with you." And so they were. The hovering annoyed him. Vesram and Lilea stayed near him, Lilea a little more twitchy than Vesram. At least they kept at an adult hovering distance and not a baby hovering one. Vesram was to his right, a little behind him, a single large step away from being able to wrap his arms around Sintih. Lilea was the same, to his left. And Sintih? Sintih was just walking, just one foot in front of the other.

Re: One foot in front of the other

At first he just walked, ignoring the other people in the room, just focused on his own tasks. Occasionally, as he stumbled or suddenly stopped, he could see Lilea panic and her hands come forward to catch him. But she stopped herself each time as Sin caught himself or took a moment to breathe. Moments which increased in frequency as the bits passed by. It wasn't a very interesting walk either. Just the same stretch of thick mats and furs from one wall to the other. Vesram allowed him time to catch his breath whenever he reached a wall but each time he needed more time, leaning against the wall with one hand, the other one leaning more and more heavily on the cane.

And then he stepped forward once but couldn't. His foot didn't want to move. He toppled. But before he really got anywhere, large Ellune hands supported him softly, helping him keep his balance, just a moment before much smaller Eidisi hands wrapped around his other arm like a vice, gripping tightly for just a moment before dialing down some of the strength. "Alright. That's enough for this trial. Lilea?" Lilea let go of him and moved around him, to support his free arm, guiding him to the nearest bench like the sickly old man he moved like while Vesram went to fetch the wheelchair. "You are very stubborn, you know?" Lilea said softly, so that Vesram wouldn't hear. It wasn't becoming of a nurse, especially a student like her, to critique her patients. He managed a weak smile but waited until he'd been seated on the bench to respond. "Thanks. Also you..." He signed and then imitated her earlier panicked motions every time he'd almost tripped before. "Har, har. You just looked so weak I thought you were my grandfather."

Ouch. But it wasn't far from the truth. Sin nodded but he hadn't the energy to respond more. So he sat for a moment until Vesram arrived with the wheelchair. As the large Ellune helped him into it, Sin could tell that more effort was being supplied by the man than by Sintih himself. This was the part he hated, although he knew it meant he'd worked hard. But still, he'd worked hard at something so simple as walking, which annoyed him. They moved back through the hallway into the reception area, where Vesram parked Sintih to the side for a moment to go and speak with the receptionist. While they waited, Lilea made sure Sintih was tucked into his triple layers of cloaks and clothing. He just let her mother him, absently thinking how nice it must be to be able to wear a simple nurse uniform as adequate protection against the "heat" that was currently plaguing Viden.

Comments: I often forget that the Fitness Centre also offers physiotherapy, so this thread was interesting. Padding the floor with mats and furs in order to prevent injuries is a good idea.

I appreciate in how much detail you described Sintih’s physical and mental state after whatever happened to him and his physiotherapy session. I’ve never needed physiotherapy, but it felt fairly realistic to me.

As for your note about not being sure which skill the knowledges belong to – sometimes, a knowledge works for several skills, so it comes down to what you prefer/which skill you need knowledges for the most, more or less.

Anyway, enjoy your rewards!
