Inside the mountain, a woman sat alone, in a cavern that diverged into a shadowed fork. Neither path was well lit, and the ceilings were tall, so much so that even her light stone failed to illuminate the space fully. And on a boulder which she perched, bundled in a cloak which shifted in its coloring. Cerulean and then emerald green, and blue once more, Yeva's wild hair remained tucked into her drawn hood, she listed to the sound of water dripping and scratching of her pen against parchment. On one leg she balanced a linguist's primer and on the other, her journal, with its bruised leather covering and smooth vellum pages. But more interesting than her own equipment, was the ancient writings of forgotten civilization, painted across the wall and decorated with crude but well preserved images, forgotten and overlooked by men inhabiting the surface.

But for how long?

Yeva tried to copy each symbol as they appeared on the jagged wall, honey brown eyes flickering back and forth across the page and upwards in an effort to follow the curve of lines and spaces. The reference book, while helpful was thick and heavy and the more she cross referenced the information, the more confident she felt in this discovery. These words were of the Shay; the words she recognized as Shay'ava, although she was far from an expert in its workings. In fact, her only knowledge of it came from children stories and a rare reward in the form of a five book series she had received in an awards ceremony.

She could have spent trials hoping to decipher the text, and perhaps would if she wasn't mindful of the time. It wasn't until her hand began to cramp and her leg was alight with pinpricks that she realized how long she must have been studying. Yeva leaned back, and stretched out her legs, wiggling her toes in soft soled leather boots. Each shifting of her weight seemed to resonate in the space and when she rose to grab her satchel and canteen, something sharp scrapped against stone.

"Hello?"

Yeva froze, a deer in the sights of a predator, her mortal eyes staring in the two darkened paths. She waited for a response, her breath loud and suddenly fearful, "I-I'm a researcher," she added, taking a step back and slowly crouching, eyes still fixated on the unknown. There was this pressing feeling of being watched, and she didn't dare look away, "H-h-h-hello?"

Her voice was now meek, nervous. The hairs on the back of her neck rose and the notion of leaving became more persuasive. The room felt smaller. Growing tighter.

Then, a clanging metal rang from the opposite path. Once, then twice, Yeva jolted in her skin. Whatever had been lurking on the left path, scurried deeper into the cave, never revealing its face. More beating echoed from the right, and without reason, a light illuminated in the distance. The rumbling sounds of men speaking. The growl of rocks being shaken through sifters and erecting of wooden beams danced to where she stood. Miners?

Yeva gave one more weary glance at the other pathway and hurried to shove her things in her bag. Books and papers tucked under one arm and pressed against her buttoned up blouse, she raced towards the sound of civilization, as if that had been her goal all along. But something kept her looking over her shoulder, niggling in the back of her mind.

Danger.

"What are you doing?" she asked in breathless manner, emerging into the light of the men to search for a familiar face. None of the workers seemed to notice her, and their outfits were different from the designs she had come to recognize in Scalvoris and Rharne. The people carried themselves in a way that felt foreign, as if she was not in a land she had ever been before, "This... This is sacred land," Sacred was a subjective term, but she knew its rarity. It was to be preserved! Searching one of the workers faces, she pushed her plea, "There's history here. Look-"

Yeva stood before a man who appeared to have some authority. He looked to be instructing others, sharing ideas, and it was to him she reached out for, looking over her shoulder and pointing. But where she came from was no longer. Instead, there was an ominous mine shaft that seemed to lead deeper into the cave. Unsupported, it was not reinforced and looked to be a tighter squeeze than the gentle path she had walked to arrive. How odd, "There's was a room..."

Confused, the healer hesitated, wringing her hands and then glancing down at her notes. At least they were still in her possession, "I'm Yeva of Rharne, this place... it's important," she looked back up, at a man who appeared to be in his early thirties, "Please don't destroy it."

“Aim for the cracks in the rocks, that’s where the stone is weak. The cleavage, don’t ya know?” Brent instructed as he held the lantern up in the darkened tunnel.

A team of six strong miners swung pick axes and sledge hammers against the rock at the end of the tunnel. Switching off with one of the men, Brent took his turn with a pick axe and felt the creases of the stone wall before giving it a mighty swing. Rock chipped and crumpled with the impact and formed a pile of rubble at the foot.

Brent wiped at his sweaty brow as a pair of miners gathered up the rubble into a small cart. It was hot and exhausting work. He wore only trousers and a good pair of shoes which were already wet with mud from the tunnel floor. Getting back to work, he started chiselling at a particularly stubborn face of the tunnel.

“What if we don’t find the Sorelian Steel?” One of the men asked aloud over the clang of metal on stone.

“Well we ain’t going back to Raelia till we do,” Brent replied. “By Ymir, I hope they were right in this. They said maybe gold too but I ain’t seen any signs of gold either.”

In the lantern light all the stone looked dark, but where the lantern shone close to the rock, one could see a tint of blue in the azure stone. The Sorelian Steel was supposed to have a similar colouration but more shiny and reflective.

They had come far enough to warrant another wooden brace, and Brent beckoned one of the miners over to help him fit together the simple wooden frame. With two columns and a beam up top, Brent nailed together the brace so it was snug against the rock ceiling. He added a couple of thin diagonal pieces to reinforce the joints of the brace and was pleased to see that it matched the look of the other timber frames spaced at ten foot intervals.

It was his turn for lantern duty and he switched off with one of the men to look over their progress. Seemingly appearing from a side passage, a woman suddenly appeared in the midst of the tunnelling. “Don’t forget to use the back end to pry the rock away,” Brent called out to one of the men. There was no point expending energy needlessly.

The woman seemed out of place and distressed. Although he kept the lantern high enough for the others he tried to make sense of her strange claims that seemed contradictory to his mission.

“Excuse me, Miss. You shouldn’t be here. It’s not safe.” Brent said, trying to get her attention. Although it was clear that he didn’t see anything wrong with his crew of miners being in the tunnel.

“Of course it’s sacred land. This is Ymir’s mountain. He is the one who blesses us with stone, steel, and gold. The land must be sacred if it is to have any Sorelian Steel.”

There was a bit of commotion with the miners and Brent turned away from the young woman, distracted at the cause. He adjusted the lantern to see what it was about, but the men seemed to have sorted out the issue. However, when he looked over his shoulder, a patch of white caught his eye. In a pool of mud on the side of the tunnel lay the limp body of a white dove. Brent’s face tightened slightly and he beckoned over one of the men.

“Add this to the pile of rubble when you cart it out,” he instructed pointing to the dead bird.

With his attention back on the distressed woman, she was pointing down a shaft saying that there was a room. A strange mental state came over him. He was both positive that they had explored that shaft and at the same time was sure that the tunnel hadn’t been there moments before.

“Oy! Have we been down there?” Brent called out to the team.

“Yeah, no steel, no gold. Just some weird markings.” One of the men replied.

“History, eh?” Brent asked with a wolfish grin. “Let’s go take a look.”

Part of him regretted taking away the lantern to go down the tight passageway, but he had worked in the dark before and it would only be a short while before he returned. He would need the lantern to see if there was any real ‘history’ to this woman’s story. He beckoned her to follow and he squeezed through the tight spaces of the tunnel. It did not open up into a large cavern, however, but more like a room. Holding up the lantern, the faint rays shone upon etched grooves in the stone. Whether these were the same writings or entirely new ones from what Yeva had seen before, was an entirely different matter, but Brent looked at them curiously and ran his calloused fingers over the stone.

A rumble in the mountain set his heart racing. “We should get back to the others.”

As he started to rush back to the narrow passageway, a much larger tremor shook the tunnel system and made him lose his balance. A deafening crack could be heard following by the thudding tumble of rocks. There were muted shouts of anguish. “Brent! Brent!” The cartographer stumbled to his feet but by then there was another shaking of the earth and more rocks in the narrow passage began to fall. Afraid that the tunnel was already blocked, Brent changed course to get back to the small room. He needed to get out from the tunnel and if Yeva looked to be in danger or falling behind, he would use his own body to shield her frail form.

More rubble fell. He was on the tunnel floor. He couldn’t move his left leg. It was pinned… or something. Suddenly the world went black. The lantern had gone out.

Re: Rocky Start

5 Ymiden 720

The mountain had a name?

"Ymir?"

Yeva hesitated, looking over at the other miners and their dirt streaked faces, suddenly unsure. Panic crackled in the pit of her stomach, the walls suddenly felt tighter. She had been in mountains twice before, once on the great Mount Ornthrus and a second time in Faldrass. Both experiences had involved spirits, both had been a test of survival. She didn't know what Sorelian steel was, but she knew it would likely be used for construction or weaponry. Yeva's brows knitted and for a trill it appeared she was to heed the stranger's advice, but his attention was drawn away to a dead bird, limp in a place so dark.

A troubling sign, but one the redhead had no means to understand. She was preparing her round of rhetoric, unsure how to convince these men that Shay history was worth preserving and extraordinarily rare, steel or no steel, but the bearded man, at the very least, was willing to humor her.

“Oy! Have we been down there?”

One man replied over the battering of metal against rock, “Yeah, no steel, no gold. Just some weird markings.

She gasped, turning to Brent with a helpless expression on her face, "They're not weird! They're remarkable!"

"History, eh?"

"Yes," she huffed, flipping wildly through her journal, "This could be physical proof of the Shay! I've never seen anything like it!" Yeva's heart swelled from the excitement of such a discovery, but no one else seemed concerned with the details. Thankfully, he didn't dismiss her.

"History, eh? Let's go take a look."

"Really?" she perked up, already leaping towards the tunnel in a flash of blue, "Alright, I'll show you," Brent lead the way with his lantern, the light flickering off the rock to reveal deep rivets in the coarse stone. She kept close, for the light source, but also to stave off the feeling of being lightheaded when the trail thinned considerable. She forced herself to take deep breaths, eyes focused on the dip in the man's back where rivets of sweat had collected, "The Shay worshiped the Spirits; some say they even predated the Immortals - there's very little recorded history still in known existence. That's why this is so important, the c-"

Her guide stepped into a room; it was much smaller than where she had come from and she stared at in silent bewilderment, "Are....Are you sure we came the right way?" she couldn't help but ask, although there had no been no turn in the hallway; Yeva was sure she would have saw it. This place held markings unlike the ones from the cavern she had sat in, but the language was still the same, "Fascinating," pushing back her hood, a mass of red curls spilled forward and she had to push them back to allow more light to illuminate the etchings, "Fa....ra..." a small and delicate hand, with a wrist decorated in a thin scrap of ribbon reached out to trace the marred surface, deciphering the markings right below Brent's palm. Yeva flipped wildly through her book, struggling to connect the markings with her spotty alphabet. The problem with lost languages was how challenging reliable information on a topic was, "Farafan."

The text pulsed in a sudden light and died, followed immediately by an ominous rumble, which sent the cryptographer into a fright. Yeva jerked backwards and she looked at the roof, ready to doge falling debris.

"We should head back to the others."

Yeva couldn't agree more, "Quickly," she added, regretful they could not afford more time. Their feet moved swiftly, but in vain. More cracking, as if the very earth was breaking free of chains, and rock began to hiss and crumble. Familiar panic sent Yeva's heart into a fit and she jumped easily, scared of losing the light, scared of being lost forever.

"Watch out!" she screamed, debris falling from above. He changed their course, ushering them back towards the room - the tunnel looked endless in the darkness - shielding her where he could.

They were near the mouth of the room when they went spilling to the ground, the sounds of miner agony and their cries loud in the ears of the medic. A large rock smacked into the side of her head, she dropped to the ground. They called the man's name and the sound of their shouting was perhaps the only thing that kept her fading in and out of consciousness. Yeva knew she shouldn't fall asleep, but even in the pain, it was so tempting. The rock was cold beneath her cheek, she tried to roll over.

There was darkness.

Was she dead? Her body ached, there was blood, but she lived.

Yeva whimpered in pain, testing her body's mobility in the small space. To her surprise, nothing felt broken, but she was losing blood. Her boot smacked against a rock, she patted the blind world around her. Her worst fears were coming true, "Brent?" she reached out, repeating the name that echoed off the walls. The voices sounded close and so far away, "Where are you?" Her hands smacked against the earth, searching. Each empty handful brought tears to her eyes, "Brent!" she shoved aside small rocks, grit clinging to her palms. Her books were gone - she couldn't see - at last she lowered her hand and felt flesh.

Gasping, her touch lightened but lowered once, "Are you hurt?"

Was he conscious? Scared he may have a broken bone, Yeva's touch was gentle, hands shaking. She felt his elbow, then his shoulder, "Can you move? The lantern-" She disappeared back into the darkness, the sound her her shuffling around to feel for its existence. It was nearly impossible to gauge where it could have fallen or if it was still usable, but by a miracle, she touched its handle, "I found it! Okay... Fire... Need fire. Just try to stay still, alright? I'm a doctor." Under normal circumstances, such a claim might have felt unnatural, but it was truth. She grew more skilled in medicine by the trial.

But healing another without the ability to see them? Impossible. Yeva was scared of the dark, but also afraid of burning away their oxygen, yet without any light, she would never know the extent of injuries or if there still remained a way out. Adrenaline spurring her into movement, she moved along the small space, learning its limitations, and felt her bag. It was half covered in debris, and she huffed to push away rock, but found it, and soon - matches.

Steadying the tiny piece of wood as best she could, she dropped the packet once and was forced to try a few times before the sound of fire whooshed and a weak flame flickered to life.

The Shay. She had repeated it twice now. He wasn’t really sure what she meant but it clearly had some importance. As they entered the small stone room, she immediately went to the scratches on the wall. Such small delicate hands traced over the markings as her flaming curls bounced with enthusiasm.

Farafan. The mysterious text illuminated for a moment and then the mountain shook bringing forth chaos. It was both vivid and a blur. Darkness took them.

It was in that moment that Brent realized it was a dream. It was time to wake up, was it not? His left leg ached like none other. Had he slept on it funny? Why was he not yet awake? Brent tried to open his eyes, but all that he could see was blackness. But when he tried reaching out with his hands, he could feel dirt and small rocks beneath them, not the cotton sheets of his bed.

Although the pain in his leg sharpened along the side, he didn’t want to move. He recalled the strange discontinuity of having both explored this small room and having never been inside. He was dreaming. This was all just a dream. But why wasn’t he waking up?

A small voice whimpered in the darkness. Yeva. She was dreaming with him. And all those men? His gut wrenched at the thought of what the cave-in had done to the miners. He didn’t want to move. What if he just laid there and didn’t get up? But almost in cruel incentive, his left ankle began to flare up in pain.

After she had said his name twice and touched him lightly, Brent groaned in the darkness. “My ankle burns like a son of a- but it’s going to be okay.” He gave a weak smile that neither of them could see.

He felt the soft but trembling touch upon his elbow and shoulder. “Don’t know if I can move just yet. My leg hurts and it feels like there are rocks covering me or something heavy.”

When she moved away looking for the lantern, her sudden absence was acutely noticed. “Yeva?” Brent called out anxiously. This was silly. Why was he so panicked in a dream? Trying to calm his nerves, Brent began brushing pebbles and small rocks off his torso and arms. His chest stung a little from being scratched up but it was muted by the fiery pain in his ankle. Was it broken? But what did that matter if it was a dream?

As Brent could hear Yeva fiddling around with something, he felt a cold dry touch upon his back. It was definitely not Yeva. A second smooth body slid over his arm. “Yeva??” Brent called, his nerves rising rapidly. He felt another scaley belly, then with a whoosh, he was momentarily blinded.

In contrast to the darkness, the small flame was as bright as a sun. There was a hiss as the snakes on his back recoiled and Brent blinked profusely. Goosebumps spouted on his arms as he realized the nature of the creatures slithering over him.

Trying to calm both himself and the linguist he panted, “It’s just a nightmare. We’re going to get through this. If you really are a doctor, maybe you can do something about my ankle since it’s probably broken. That is, if these snakes don’t bite me first.”
OOC
Brent hasn't yet officially learned how to make others lucid (but has the ability OOCly). If you think that the knowledge of this being a nightmare is enough to make Yeva lucid, then go ahead and play that. Otherwise Brent will probably experiment on how to make someone actually lucid in a dream.

Yeva knew the importance of remaining calm in times of crisis, and she had to admit - this was a slight improvement to Faldrass, where molten lava had also been a threat. But she didn't understand this setting fully - why she must have been here, in Ymir's mountain - when she had never heard of such a place. It was easier to focus on the things she did comprehend; lighting a match, for instance.

And when the flame came alive, she recoiled only slightly in surprise, blinking as her brown eyes struggled in the pitch space. A darkness unlike one she had ever experienced before, the fire was a welcome reprieve and her hand reached out, "I'm here, I'm right here," What surprised her inherently were the snakes, which hissed and slithered back from nowhere, no doubt a horrific experience for the man. Not everyone had her affection for the reptilian species, and she struggled with getting the lantern upright.

It took some fussing, and the fire began to burn the tips of her fingers as she tried to transfer the dying flame, "They won't eat you. I... I think they're constrictors but, they probably just feed on the bats," it helped the redhead to talk through things when her nerves began to fray, as if science or reasoning could ease the madness of life in Idalos. Brent offered his own explanation, which caused the medic to look up once the lantern took, "A nightmare..."

This was a pretty bad situation, she agreed, "I've been having a lot of those lately. We.... We'll be okay."

The lantern burned brighter, illuminating more of the space and the creatures that had shocked Brent. They moved in a way that seemed lethargic, as if they had been hibernating before the collapse, and shied away from the fire, searching for crevices to disappear back into, "Let me see your ankle." Rocks indeed crushed it, holding it in a grip that worried her, "Don't strain it too much,"

With sore muscles, Yeva shrugged off her cloak and crawled forward, inspecting the rock formation that held him. She didn't know much about structural stability, but the boulders appeared smaller and she had a feeling they could be pried away with a bit of effort, "We have to make sure we don't do more damage," Once he was free, she'd be able to bandage it or use a splint if necessary, "I'm going to try to move some of these rocks. Do you think you can pull yourself free when I do?"

Yeva started slowly, clawing away smaller segments, wiggling others to test their weakness. It was similar to a game she had played as a child with her brothers, with small pieces of wood stacked high. White blouse speckled in wet blood stains, she had to pause when she leaned forward too quickly, feeling a rush of dizziness. That didn't seem to stop the young woman, however. She continued to un-crumble the wall, alternating between low and high rocks - whatever might lessen the weight on his injury. At last, she seemed to have pulled enough away to make progress, each rock tossed to the side; the clattering loud in the confined space, "Ready?" her voice seemed to have recovered some confidence and she crouched, scooting close to the wall and used as much strength as she could to lift at the heavy blockade.

She was not a very strong woman, truth be told. Perhaps it was the adrenaline, or relation to Emea, but she was able to lift it just enough to allow Brent leverage to drag himself from it if he was capable. Once free, Yeva would drop to her knees, panting as she recovered her worn leather bag and began to unveil a plethora of medical supplies, "I'm going to touch your leg, alright? Tell me it starts to hurt, okay?"

Starting at his calf, she moved downward, delicately running her hand along the bone and muscle, eyes staring in the middle distance as she felt for abnormalities.

Brent’s skin crawled as the snakes receded from the lantern light. It’s a dream. None of this is real. But despite his internal insistence, the pain he was feeling hadn’t diminished. Again he smiled weakly as Yeva reassured him with her presence. “Constrictors…” He murmured softly. No doubt their dark shadowy forms were looking for a new victim or waiting until the time was right.

With the mention of his ankle, Brent turned to the task at hand. Although he had a couple of cuts and bruises on his chest, they were manageable and he was able to prop himself up enough to start moving small to medium sized rocks away one at a time.

“I think I’ll be able to get myself out,” he replied. “But only with your help.”

Brent winced as he shifted poorly, causing pain to shoot up his leg. Taking a break, he breathed heavily as Yeva began to clear more of the stones. The weight on his legs began to lift, but it also revealed a large gash on his calf. Plus his ankle was most certainly broken.

As she gathered her strength for one last heft, he readied himself with several steady breaths. The immense weight on his ankle lifted, and he scrambled to pull himself forwards with both his arms and a bit of help from his uninjured leg. Hardly a moment later, he collapsed onto the stone ground, gritting his teeth as the world swirled around him. He wasn’t going to black out, he couldn’t black out. Agony was ablaze in his leg and all he could do was grip at the ground while letting out a muted whimper.

His breath trembled as the doctor gathered her supplies. “It hurts already,” Brent answered. “But you can touch it if you need to. My… my ankle is the worst. But somehow my right leg seems okay.”

Brent shivered slightly at her touch. He hoped he wasn’t getting a fever of all things. A smear of blood on her clothing caught his eye. “You’re not hurt, are you? I shouldn’t have led you down this tunnel. My men. I don’t know what has happened to them. But…”

He took a few long deep breaths trying to gather his thoughts. “I know this sounds crazy, but I want you to understand this. Even though it seems real, we’re in a dream, Yeva. Whatever happens, we’ll still wake up in our own beds.”

Feebly, he reached up and tried to press his first two fingers to her forehead as he concentrated on making her see the truth and to awaken. He had never done this before, as he had only ever been visited by other dreamwalkers who had used a similar gesture to awaken his lucidity.

Suddenly, the runes on the stone walls began to glow with fierce intensity. It now seemed that the walls were completely covered in the illuminated runes. Strange whispers of another language sounded in his mind and the dark black snakes seemed to writhe in the shadows. There was a creak and a scraping of rock against rock. The walls had moved inwards by an inch.

“We got to get out. Or, or tell it to stop. You said you know the language, Yeva?” Brent asked quickly. The injured man scoured the dark room for anything that might be able to help them. Despite all the rubble at the entrance, there was strangely a strong timber beam mixed into the fallen stone. If he could stand, maybe he’d be able to dig it out and at least prop it up against the walls that were closing in, even if merely one inch at a time.

Re: Rocky Start

Brent's eyes honed in on her blood, unbeknownst to the petite woman, "You're not hurt, are you?" Yeva looked up, brow furrowing as she was reminded of her aches, Brent's voice interwove with his own distress, "I shouldn’t have led you down this tunnel. My men. I don’t know what has happened to them. But…”

"Hey," Yeva scooted closer, serious and soothing, "This isn't your fault. You can't blame yourself. I-"

I wanted you to see this. I spoke the word. Maybe I caused this?

And now they were trapped. She had to stop talking, knowing how close she had come to hypocrisy, "We can't lose hope yet. We don't know what happened."

Yeva worked, doing her best to peel back the hem of his pant leg without disturbing the injury. She needed a knife to cut away the fabric carefully; did she have one? She worked at cleaning the cut and began to splint his leg, the piece of wood available without explanation. Each action and step felt muddied but accurate, a memory of action.

“I know this sounds crazy, but I want you to understand this. Even though it seems real, we’re in a dream, Yeva. Whatever happens, we’ll still wake up in our own beds.”

A dream? Her hands slowed. That's what he meant by nightmare? She had thought it was simply a figure of speech; yet something inside her seemed to stir. A hesitation in the back of her mind. This felt... important.

Still rummaging in her bag, she didn't notice the cartographer reaching outward until two fingers were in her face, "W-" What are you doing? Blinking, her breath stopped and she realized what he might of wanted. He was trying to touch her? That same feeling of importance lingered and without thinking, she decided to trust him. He had, after all, followed her first.

Yeva closed her eyes and leaned forward, pressing her face against his hand. There was silence, and then-

A single brown eye peeked from beneath her lashes, expectant and somehow disappointed. She didn't feel any different. Yeva thought... Well, she thought it might change something. Now, she only felt foolish, With blush rising to her cheeks, the medic forced a half-smile. His hand was rough, a sign of a laborer, and she took hold to lower it, wondering if the pain had made him delirious, "I'm sorry. I'm not sure I understa-"

And then it happened.

It came like a shock of fire, blazing and sudden, up her arm to engulf her entire being. Yeva gasped and she released him, jerking backwards as her eyes flashed with light and returned to normal. She looked to her own hand and then his, surprise and accusation on her face as her body settled to fading warmth. With fresh eyes, she stared at the walls, followed by the room around them. It was ethereal in the glow of the lantern light. They were here.

In a dream.

Thoughts raced, piecing together what she could, but the logic of before wasn't as foolproof as it had been. The more she struggled to make sense, the more she believed him. How had she gotten here? Where had she first learned about the Shay? She couldn't remember.

It seemed there was no time to process.

"Who are you?"
she asked.

But it was the mountain that responded. The chants of whispered voices she did not understand echoed from the shadows.

Each wall began to shudder, creeping in to remind them not to forget. Yeva jumped to her feet, no longer curious. Reality or not, Yeva's fear was real and overbearing. "I never said that," her panic crackled, and she felt very much like a hunted rabbit, "Shay'ava is a dead language. No one knows it. I was trying rediscover it; learn. My book just has a few syllables. An alphabet, some hypothesis-"

The linguist's eyes were wide with terror, threatening to spill with tears. She grabbed wildly at her bag and began throwing stuff from it in search of the book. The satchel felt endless, a cavern with odds and ends...

This couldn't be the final chapter.

"Wake up," she hissed to herself, grabbing a handful of pressed flower, which she cast aside in a whirlwind of sweet smelling petals. Bluebells and sage, "Wake up." Each desperate grasp came up without her tome. Thyme, blackthorn, and a headband of Avriel feathers, "I-I can't find it."

As with many things I write, I kept a lot of details purposefully vague to allow response. I also wanted to leave room for interpretation. Whether his efforts made her truly lucid or not, I'll leave up to the reviewer at the end of the thread, since it can be passed through touch with various levels of success (which is more likely the higher the initiate is in dream walking). Yeva did fade in and out of consciousness when she hit her head in my last post, which may count as "falling asleep" in Emea. Either way, enjoy!

As the medic worked at uncovering his wound, Brent winced as the gash on his calf was laid bare. He gritted his teeth as she cleaned it and in moments she seemed to have conjured a splint for his ankle. Brent helped to tie it in place with the tatters that remained of his cloth pant leg. It still hurt, but at least it was secure now. He was glad that it was just a dream, and yet the injury felt so real that it unnerved him.

At first his attempts to make her lucid seemed to have no effect. How had Mister Magpie done it? How had Malach done it? But then she snapped back with a gasp and her eyes flashed with brilliant illuminance. Had it worked?

Who are you?

“I’m Brent. Brent Forrester of Mel…” But the rumble of the mountain interrupted. There were voices in his head. Yeva had jumped to her feet and Brent struggled into a sitting position. She didn’t know the language but it was called Shay’ava. She was looking for something. The walls creeped inwards. Wake up. Wake up. They needed to wake up.

With a last ditch effort, Brent struggled to his feet, or foot rather, and tried to pull out the buried piece of timber within the rubble. At first it seemed stuck, but then he yanked hard and it came loose, causing him to fall back and the beam to clatter against the floor. Scrambling on the floor and trying to fight past the pain in his leg, he positioned the beam so it could prop apart two of the walls that were closing in. They moved another inch and pressed flush against the ends of the wood.

“This might buy us time, but we need to wake up!” Brent shouted. The walls pushed in again, and there was a slight creak of the wood, yet it seemed to hold. “Wake up Yeva, wake up!”

The walls moved in another inch, and Brent watched wide-eyed as the beam started to bend. A far off fascination within him watched as the beam seemed to buckle to the side since it was effectively braced against the floor. What would have happened if he had also managed to brace it on both sides too? But it was too late. A deafening crack marked the end of the beam.

For several moments Brent couldn’t keep track of what was going on. He was trying to wake up. Yeva must have been doing something too. And then…

With a gasp Brent opened his eyes to the waking world. His heart was still racing and his breaths rapid, but he was gone, gone from the cave. Trying to calm himself he realized there was a slight itch on the back of his calf.

Regardless, he got up to stand and immediately regretted it as he tumbled to the ground. His ankle, while not broken, was certainly sprained to a degree and hadn’t been able to hold any of the weight he had put on it. With surprise and shock, Brent looked at the back of his left calf and saw a thin cut along it. Again, it was nothing like the gash in the dream but it was eerily in the exact same place. In all his years of dreaming, this had never happened to him and then he remembered acutely what Sybil had once said. The world of dreamscapes was a dangerous place. Perhaps this was what she had meant. Perhaps lucid dreaming had dangers of its own beyond that of a normal dream. He would need to take it easy for the next couple of trials, but the realization had certainly sent shivers down his spine.

Re: Rocky Start

5 Ymiden 720

Introductions were cut short as the room continued to creep in.

With horror, the dark rock closed its maw around them. Brent struggled to his feet and shouted at her, hoisting a wooden beam that must have been heavy with his injuries. He was trying to help and she needed to do something. Wake up. Wake up. The Melrathi man suddenly sounded underwater, lost among her rapid breaths of fear. I can't, she tried to say. I can't. Please-

Yeva backed away from the wall, trying to ram against the confines of her own mind. But how?

Wake up. Wake up. Now!

Still, she struggled to take in enough air, panicked tears rolling down her cheeks to soak her blouse.

"Brent, I can't!" a strange sensation of moving eyes and stuck body filled her, as if she was fighting against an unknown force. But as the beam splintered and fell, she spun and reached for the bearded stranger.

He was gone.

Yeva dropped the lantern, the flame pulsed and died and the walls pressed against her back. She held out her arms in the darkness, trying to the closing room, screaming. The woman cried for help, her arms strained and buckling in defeat. She could hear her bag crunching as her items were destroyed. She pounded the walls and scratched at the stone till her fingers bled. Pain shot up her arm and the walls pressed against her chest, closing, squeezing.

The walls were against her back, her breasts. Her ribs strained beneath the weight, bloodied hands reaching skyward. This would be it. Her last breath.

She gasped.

Upon a downy mattress, the young woman wrangled with twisted sheets, crying loudly in the open room. Everything was as she left it, a silent and dark contrast to her desperate weeping. The bed was barren, quilts and pillows, normally items of comfort, kicked to the floor in her nightmare struggling. But as she clawed her way to the edge and swung her legs over, her skull pounded with a headache, tender where she had been struck by falling debris.

It was a dream. Just a dream.

That's what the man had said. Brent Forrestor.

Who was he? A figment of her imagination? Someone... someone real?

Yeva stumbled to the window, her fingers achy and thus stiff, making her struggle with the locking mechanism and push open the pane to allow a deep open breeze. Upon the balcony, the redhaired woman slumped in her night dress and watched the sleeping city of Scalvoris. She recalled the dangers, how real it had all felt. She touched her chest where the wall had laid against her, noticing patches of dried blood on her hands. Was it true? If you died in your dreams, you died in real life?

Hugging her arms to her chest, Yeva pulled away from the railing in horror and knew there was little chance she would be sleeping well in the trials to come. Wandering out her bedroom, she paced a grand hall, troubled and awake in the large and lonely house. The images of Emea began faded in fragments, slowly, like a jigsaw puzzle being dismantled piece by piece. First, it was the minor details her mind discarded from memory. The dead dove. The faces of the miners. Then it grew. Farafan was lost. The script forgotten and then she strained, torn between the need for answers and the desire to forget.

What had been his name?

Comments: This was indeed a fun thread!

I like how the dream was influenced by Yeva’s claustrophobia (as well as other aspects of her life such as the awards ceremony and the books that she received there) rather than being totally random. I like how you set the scene in the first post, with Yeva in the cavern, trying to copy the symbols on the wall. There is something about your writing that made it very easy for me to visualize things.

Yeva didn’t seem to be particularly afraid at first, despite the aforementioned claustrophobia. That changed soon, when she heard something. You described her fear very well. I also liked how passionate she is about her research and how she is trying to protect that place.

Brent, your first post was great as well. I liked the interaction with the miners, and Sorelian Steel … that would be a great find. I checked the Sorelian Steel writeup, and apparently, it’s rare and worth quite a bit. And when the lantern went out, and everything went dark … that was quite exciting, and I couldn’t stop reading and really wanted to find out what happened next in that nightmare.

I like how your PCs helped each other, and Yeva’s reaction to finding out that she was in a dream was very well-written.

I wonder if Brent and Yeva will ever meet in the waking world, and if Yeva will remember anything. She seems to already have forgotten Brent’s name at the end of this thread …

Yeva, you were wondering whether you’d be able to get Dreamwalking from this thread. Unfortunately, being unconscious and made lucid while remaining in the dreamscape does not make for an initiation into Dreamwalking. Maybe this could be a first step towards something though?

Anyway, enjoy your rewards!
