20th Trial of Ymiden, Arc 720.
Nicholas's lab is the biggest room in his house, but thanks to the large table, and a wide array of lab equipment, the room feels a bit claustrophobic. There are shelves full of vials, alembics as well as glass jars. The table is layered with, both, papers and glass contraptions. There are fire marks in the most random places, the air feeling heavy from the mix of chemicals and plants. All windows are open to have some sort of ventilation. If not for the fact that both neighboring houses were empty, he was sure there would be complaints about stench daily.
While today was a trial off from working in Serpent's Remedies the boy was in no way free. He had university for the first four breaks, then the library and now some lab work to finish a paper. This was one of the hardest assignments Nicholas had got so far. The professor gave everyone a spreadsheet with one statement and then told them to prove if it's true or false, as well as, provide necessary proof for their opinion. While learning chemistry from his grandfather Nicholas never did anything like that, their lessons being more practical chemistry in a pharmacy. Once starting university they had lessons in research but those were few and in between. After all, chemistry students had a lot to cover.
So, that pretty much meant that after getting the assignment Nicholas needed to rush to the library and spend a couple of breaks in searching for information that would help with the topic. The librarian was as much of help, as one without the specific knowledge would be, though, they knew how where to look for which topics.
After he survived the pain of finding information of any use (doing things for the first time is never easy) he had few experiments to try, a rough idea of what the conclusion will be and hopes that he won't need to spend another allnighter. Couse...Nicholas maybe has been missing a bit more sleep than it would be considered healthy. Is losing any amount of sleep considered healthy? He could ask Devin as he's a doctor but that would start other questions he wasn't ready to go through. Back to the story!
So here he was now, in his personal lab with a parrot on his shoulder and a frown on the red-hairs face. This was the experiment...number 5? Maybe six? Nicholas checked his notes again, yes, six, and the boy feared to admit but he had suspicions he messed up somewhere. You see, they were given a simple liquid chemical and an easily acquirable metal. He knew that there was a compound chemical that consisted of both of these. So, from a logical standpoint, they should react. Now, so far, seemed like his logic was slightly flawed. The boy has changed the temperatures six times, slightly going mad in what else he could do to get the needed result.
The youngest Erobern let out an irritated sight, stepping out from his lab and plopping down in his back yard. It was close to dusk, most sound from the streets being muffled by the walls surrounding him. Bling chooses that moment to bite the boy's ear while making his adorable bird noises.
"Rude, much! I appreciate the pitty but I would appreciate even more if you left my ears where they are. I still have annoying professors to listen to." The bird just kept chirping away as Nicholas quietly laughed and pulled out a joint and box of matches. Damm this assignment, he needed to clear out (sort of) his head.
With the first puff, the male already slightly relaxed, tension and Bling leaving his shoulders (the bird wasn't a big fan of high inducing vapors). As he sat there watching the shifting shadows he tried to understand what was missing? What was he doing wrong? It felt stupid that so early in his studies there was already something so complicated that it made him lose sleep and nerves. Nicholas knew that these elements together had a result. They had a lesson about it twelve or so trials ago. Such, it was just obvious to assume that the result would be that the metal will resolve in the heated liquid.
But as he sat there, getting more and more relaxed (and high) it suddenly hit him. The lesson back then was off-topic, talking about how alchemical processes can influence elements and their properties. Without a moment to spare he crushed the joint and ran back into the house.
