Interested in making something for the city of Athart, or at the very least, its surrounding area? Look no further! Just copy and paste the form below, and fill out the relevant information. Remember, details details details! As always, we can't wait to see what you create. When approved, submissions will be moved to their appropriate locations and the creator notified. Thank you, and happy writing!

Remember: Images should be cropped and/or sized to 300x300 pixels. If you are unable to do so, or don't know how, it is encouraged you do not include one, or at the very least, request assistance from a mod or fellow player. In the case of no image, it is expected that any physical descriptions are comprehensive.

Aloplumia (Feather-loss)
break
Image

Common Vectors: Various molds and rashes can contribute to Aloplumia, but there are cases of idiopathic (without a known cause) aloplumia. Idiopathic Aloplumia tends to affect avriel that are middle-aged or older, without regard to fitness or health.

Native to: Can develop anywhere, but especially in marshy/wetland biomes and places where mold and fungus thrive.

Description: Of all the diseases that are unique to the avriel physiology, Aloplumia is perhaps the most feared by older Avriel. Most of the time, this develops as a result of improper hygiene after flying through inclement weather, or after having gotten moisture on their wings. In the fungal variety, it manifests as spores eating away at the base of their feathers. The fungi are often multicolored, and can be difficult to spot. They don't cause any irritation either. So it comes as quick a shock to the unsuspecting avriel when his feathers spontaneously begin to shed.

In idiopathic Aloplumia, more signs are given that there may be a problem, before their feathers start to fall out in a pattern. It's speculated by healers that poor circulation or improper diet may be to blame for aloplumia of this kind, but nobody knows for certain. Nevertheless, the idiopathic variety gives a sign in the way of numbness along certain patterns, around the avriel's scalp, and trailing down their shoulders and onto the base of their wings. The numbness eventually gives way to a burning irritation, until the feathers slowly shed over the next few trials and seasons. There are unguents that can slow this process, however a cure has eluded the healers treating avriel. Perhaps trial and error research would progress better if avriel weren't in the habit of throwing human healers off of cliffs when they fail to treat their patients.

Treatments: Herbal unguents can be used to slow Idiopathic aloplumia. Fungal aloplumia, if discovered early, must be treated with fumigation in a special smoke-sauna, where prepared oils and anti-fungal, herbal concoctions are mixed and burned with incense. It's unknown how long a fungal infection must be treated this way, but trials have succeeded in cases where the fumigation goes on for a dozen trials, uninterrupted. Unfortunately this treatment is sometimes complicated by an avriel's sense of cabin fever, where they will not be able to stay inside long enough for it to be effective.

Effects: In most cases, Aloplumia only affects an avriel's outward appearance, which would be damaging enough to an avriel's vanity. In a few, severe cases, however, it can interfere with their ability to fly. It also leaves them vulnerable to dermal infections, where the feathers have fallen off.

Master Aladani
break

Aladani

Image

Name: Aladani
Race: Avriel/Sev'ryn
DOB: 1st of Ashan, arc 660
Title: Master Aladani to humans, "The Deadwind" to avriel.
Moderation Type: Any.
Able/Willing to Mentor?: Yes. But he isn't easy to find. One must first know that he exists, and then convince someone among the human population to give up his location. And then,a propsective student needs to climb a high rock formation outside the city proper, and find the carved out grotto where he often meditates in repose. He will not teach avriel.
Skills able/willing to Mentor in: Da'Riya (Master), Meditation (Expert), Discipline (Expert), Intelligence (Expert).

Brief Description: Wizened features, pattern baldness on his head, and dusky complexion and shabby jute clothing combine to give him the appearance of a homeless vagabond. Aladani wields no weapons, and bears no baggage. What little food he gets, comes from the human beings who revere him. He is completely blind, getting around purely through an ability to perceive landscapes and features through his avriel air sense.

Unlike many avriel hybrid, he lacks wings, which perhaps has lent itself to his being able to blend in with the human population and evade detection as a abominable half-breed.

Nevertheless, word has arrived among the Avriel that he has killed a few of their number in duels in the wilderness, oddly enough by breaking their wings and letting them fall off a cliff. A bounty of 250 gn has been set for anyone who brings 'The Deadwind' as they call him, to justice. The problem with their bounty posting, is that no description is posted.

Personality and Brief History: Aladani was the offspring of an Avriel and Sev'ryn. Little else is known about his parentage, other than the assumption that his father was the avriel, who would've been either exiled or killed, and his mother was a Sev'ryn, who was responsible for raising him once she smuggled him out of the city.

An air of mystique surrounds him, as most who are in direct contact with him don't even know the details of his upbringing. The few details that are known, are that somewhere along the line he learned and mastered a martial art that is highly effective at combating the impetuous Avriel. He is known to despise the Avriel with a passion, yet will not engage them directly. He has taken to teaching other non-avriel his method of fighting, so long as they vow to undermine the feathered folk.

He is grim and humorless, and intolerant of fools whatever their intentions.

Re: Development Submissions

Aeroclast Congress (Amphitheatre)
break

The entrance to the Aeroclast Congress is a very well-kept secret, held among Avriel of influence and importance on a need-to-know basis. Members drafted into service recieve instructions on how to find it. It's situated around the Market and Entertainment sector, to the north side of that part of the city. From that central position, it allows for the carrying of sounds and manipulations of air currents to all corners of Athart, and a bit beyond.

The entrance is a non-descript marble building, with two guards stationed on the outside. There are more fortifications hidden within. It links to a humidified tunnel, which the keepers mainain lower humidity, for the prevention of mold development. From there, the tunnel at some point leads upward, to a small Ziggurat nearby to the Shrine of Syroa.

Unlike it's entrance, the location of this Ziggurat is well known to all Avriel and most human beings living in the city. Here, the architects and slaves laboring under them have built one of the greatest marvels of sonic engineering. A great amplifier, with the inner-workings built from marble and stone, and carried to the sky through a combination of corridors. Beyond the inner chamber, pipes lined by brass, bronze, and some silver bells and casings at the end project these sonic waves to the rest of Athart.

It is through this large artifice that the Avriel chorus within project, along with a warrior-skald's conduction. The warrior-skald is a master at either singing or musical instruments. He/she understands well how an avriel's voice can manipulate the air waves. Utilizing, their voices to sort of weave a tapestry, it carries and is visible to the folk's air-sense from even miles away.

The purpose of this building is both practical and ceremonial. It is most often used in times of crisis, to warn and direct the avriel citizenry in cases of impending attack, slave rebellions, and other disasters. Most humans are incapable of interpreting the warnings. These alerts use sub-sonic and hyper-sonic waves that are beyond range of their auditory sense.

Its entertainment function isn't it's main function. Yet there have been occasions where, during celebrations, the Avriel will put on elaborate air-shadow shows for their kin. These often reflect the theme of whatever event they happen to be celebrating. To the avriel, these are marvelous to behold, and at times even epic stories can be woven into the air above the Ziggurat.

The design of the interior chamber is such that it projects sound waves sky-ward, rather than at any audience in attendance. The avriel orchestra, consisting of novice and competent singers and musicians, sit or stand along the edges of the chamber. There, their voices carry through the vast network of metal pipes to amplify across the city. The chorus recieves direction in the center from the warrior-skald, who directs them to sing on time and in tune. Needless to say, getting the chaotic avriel to do anything in unison is difficult enough. Yet something about hearing the sounds of their own voices seems to soothe the avriel into compliance for their singular task.

Erebziael

Name: Erebziael
Race: Avriel
DOB: 14th Zi'da, 665th arc
Title: Warrior-Skald, War-Singer, the Whispering Hurricane.
Moderation Type: Moderator permission only.
Able/Willing to Mentor?: Only to those of local renown. Never to non-avriel. Can impart special singing/musical instrument techniques/knowledge. These techniques allow singers and musicians to project pictures over the airwaves, visible to avriel.
Skills able/willing to Mentor in: Musical Instrument (Drums), Bludgeon (Warclub), Leadership.
Other Information: Erebziael was once the most beautiful singer among the avriel. He served in the military, beating his drum and directing troops with his voice, transmitting complex directions to them in this way. Yet, one terrible battle, he found himself aground in the rain, where he was struck in the wind-pipe by an enemy savage's spear-thrust. For him, the thrust was only superficial, yet deep enough that it ruined his voice. He can still speak in a raspy voice, but prefers to sign. His vanity does not allow him to tolerate the sound of his own voice.

His was renown for his voice once, but became a legend when he learned once more to manipulate the sound waves once more. Using his drum, and at the same time a low-rumbling growl from deep within his ruined vocal chords, he was able to overcome his handicap.

Erebziael developed an ability to weave bold tapestries in the air visible to his fellows, and went on to win many more victories for his people. Far from shunning him for his wound and disability, the avriel around him hailed him as one of their greatest heroes. For directing troops to victory on the battlefield as well as once having the best voice. And also for overcoming a near-fatal setback to become greater hero than before his throat injury.

Chasta Parangium
break

Chasta Parangium

Image

Name: Chasta Parangium
Race: Avriel
DOB: 12th of Cylus, arc 698
Title: Warrior Heiress.
Moderation Type: Self
Able/Willing to Mentor?: Yes, those training under the Dominion combat programs only. A fixed contribution per participant of 10 gn for each novice lesson. 20 gn for competent lessons. Rebates are given to those found worthy of and willing to join the Shadow Wings.
Skills able/willing to Mentor in: Flying, Acrobatics, Chakram (Thrown weapon), Running, Unarmed Combat (wing strikes and foot talons).
Other Details: She stands at five feet tall, with a wing span at least three times as wide. Her long brown hair and plumage fall to her shoulder, but are often bound into a tail to avoid blinding her during aerial acrobatics. Her eyes are brown.

Although Chasta is lithe, she is well toned and muscled from all the conditioning she's been through. She's the youngest trainer among the Dominion.

Chasta is the heiress to a prominent family of merchants, who got their start in Athart society as Shacklesmiths. Their family still practices the art of forging shackles to enslave and adorn the lesser races, and thus has made a good amount of coin. She's the sole daughter of this family. Thus the moniker of Warrior Heiress was appended to her when she joined the Shadow Wings and later the Dominion. It's mainly a derogative term that the other avriel give to her, presuming that she did not earn her way into military status honestly like the rest of them.

She often wears the best and most exquisite armors, weapons and silken clothing, which doesn't help her combat the assumption. Chasta doesn't care what others think of her though. She's come to embrace her title, if only to annoy the other avriel who try and pick fights with her.

She's carefree and upbeat for an Avriel. She still looks upon lesser races with disdain. Yet, having been a part of one of the more prominent slaver families, she's used to dealing with them. Chasta feels more than free and confident to associate with non-avriel, although she would never consent to train them in any way.

Approved! We can always use more trainers!
Mentors are another matter, as the avriel frown on magic. Any magic mentor NPCs, in Athart would either be connected to the Twisting Winds faction, or unknown to the public entirely. And any of non-avriel race, who are not buying slaves, would be in peril of indefinite imprisonment or death upon discovery.

Quick Facts
Dimensions: Depends on Age and breed. But can be anywhere from a small dog to that of a building.
Native to: Athart and other areas with caves or dungeons
Locations: Anywhere

Appearance: They can take on the appearance of any normal spider, though not so many species. Thus their fangs are more deadly to pierce the flesh if not remove the heads of their victims and cleave off limbs. Their legs can be sharp enough to puncture flesh and impale. Or strong enough to smash in ones head against the floor. There are the children sized ones, as well as the monstrous sized ones.
They can be slick black or even brown in appearance to aid in their hiding. Or they can bear accentuating contrasts of blue, green, and red etc that are tainted with enough warning to let you know they are bearing poison.

Habitat: They live in caverns, dungeons, or other dark, remote corners of the world. Even dark, rotten or storm destroyed parts of forests and woodlands. They can be found in other forested lands as well that are not heavily populated by stronger predators or hunters.

Lifespan and Development: The average lifespan of a spider in the wilds, amongst aggressive surroundings can be merely 1-3 years. A spider, made into a pet, or a guard for a treasure can last up to 20 years. They are birthed as normal spiders do, in eggs by a mother spider usually in a nest where dozens if not hundreds are bred at once.

Diet: Like normal spiders, they will go after live creatures, or smaller animals. Sometimes they'll come out of their homes to feed. They use webs to catch their prey. Vermin are easily enough captured. But in other places, random treasure hunters will make great meals.

Temperament:
They can be docile if they are newly bred and not trained or familiar with humans in rarer locations..
They can also be aggressive where they have dealt with adventurers in the past, hunters, or workers who have come upon their lairs whilst mining.

Abilities:
There are the poisonous breeds who have glands which can be used to salivate and poison their victims after puncturing them with their fangs. Or just drooling on them. This poison can be either subtle enough to numb, or lethal enough to burn and melt away flesh to the bone within.

Some breeds have legs suitable for puncturing like a sword. They are also known for their ability to harvest silk and their use of shooting webs to capture and contain their victims.

The mothers of the breed can sometimes produce dozens of their children at once, and if given enough room, can have an entire horde of spiders around her.
They can be docile if they are newly bred and not trained or familiar with humans in rarer locations..
They can also be aggressive where they have dealt with adventurers in the past, hunters, or workers who have come upon their lairs whilst mining.

[WIP] The Unheard
break
Image

The Unheard are a group of individuals that began as a faction of freedom fighters and have since evolved to their own subculture and identity within Idalos. They live within the depths of the Athartian Jungle. They rarely speak if there is no need to, and when they do, it is in the language of Ku'aric, with entomology origins of Dehasin and Avrelian Script. Ku'aric emerged long before the Unheard were a formed society, when they were little more than escaped slaves from Athart, lucky enough to find one another beneath the precarious safety of the canopy. They struggled together and soon desired to share speech between them - not a language that represented their misfortune beneath the heel of their former Athartian masters. And so they took their knowledge of Avriel linguistics and broke it- as they had once had their spirit broken themselves- and reformed these words, adding bits and pieces of their mother tongue (if they had one, before their captivity). It is a mix of all that they are and yet, something else entirely. A language for their new life ad new identity.

Ku'aric evolved over many arcs, alongside the Unheard's numbers, who little by little gained its members by risking recapture and death, prowling the jungle near the city for any other slaves who needed refuge. Because of this, the Unheard have become masters of disguise and stealth to hide from the sharp eyes of Avriel flying overhead. There are no confirmed reports of this group, as they are never seen unless they desire to be, although their existence has been debated on by Avriel storytellers.

Unknown to outsiders, all Ku'aric have ear and mouth piercings (Cheek, tongue, or lips) which they refer to as "clippings or clips" or more literally, 'that which will clip the wings of flight'. These are infused through magic to allow their voice to be carried and heard by others sharing jewelry made of the same material - meaning all Unheard can communicate for as long as they wear their adornments. This has created one of the most peculiar cultures - resembling a hive mind and pack mentality. Many Unheard never remove their clips, finding it a sacrilege, bordering on betrayal. The Unheard speak softly to prevent drawing notice from the predators in the jungle, but also to keep the lines of communication clear and uncluttered. The refer to this pool of speech as The Whispers. While Unheard can hear the words of each other in this way, the collective of Whispers can not hear what is said by an individual without a clipping.

In the unlikely instance an outsider were to meet an Unheard, it would not be uncommon for long pauses in speech while they wait for another to finish.

Cultural Notes
  • Nearly every Unheard speaks only in whispers and their language is flat, lacking in intonation. To raise one's voice is a great insult and danger, often met with immediate and fierce violence. Outspoken or loud individuals will find their practices near intolerable.
  • Birds are ill-omens in their society, associated with desolation, destruction, and plague. To keep one as a companion is strictly forbidden; Spirits and familiars are not beholden to this rule, however some Unheard may refuse to speak to the bonded. All Avriel are slaughtered on site.
  • Where Avriel struggle to coordinate their army to the same cohesion others boast of, the Unheard's greatest strength. They often travel is small packs and they only need to say one word to have reinforcements swarming.
  • The Unheard always wear masks and extensive body paint. This deviated from their early trials, both in their need to camouflage, but also to protect their identity if they were spotted. Many of the original Unheard had family members stuck in Athart and feared their torture if the were recognized. As their culture developed and they began to multiply, it became a way to express oneself. In a culture with few spoken words, the Unheard found other ways to communicate. Bright colors are not uncommon in their paints, dappled among greens and browns to replicate the color of the jungle. They craft their masks from wood or bones and may hang adornments to represent their achievements (ex: A number of varied feathers to mark each Avriel they have killed or maimed) or add details that may aid them in close combat. In their current culture and complete withdrawal from the outside world, to be seen is without a mask has become a deeply intimate act and many Unheard have never seen a bare face outside of newborn children, the Elders or their own spouse.
  • The Elders are Unheard who have managed to survived long enough for the blindness to settle, which comes upon all Unheard sometime after their 60 birthtrial.Through their mastery of herbalism and alchemy, the Unheard are able to grow and harvest a rare flora which can be used to create a potion which grants enhanced vision (especially in low light/darkness) and whether or not someone holds Avriellian blood. These affects wear off after a trial of use, and are often applied daily to aid in their survival. After arcs of use it damages the eyes of the Unheard, but is seen as an honor. No matter the original color, the iris of the Unheard will begin to lighten to pure white, and so the older the Unheard, the lighter their eyes. Elders are deeply revered and seen as the wisest among them.
