The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

Re: A Petition

It was a good thing that Ashling and he had decided to talk about that very matter before they had entered Solveig’s office, Tristan decided, when the clerk addressed his fiancée once more. Just like the lovely young woman next to him, he agreed with the woman’s general attitude; but by the Fates (and the spirits, because he lived in Melrath now), he began to wish that she were a little less thorough when it came to him. He was no evil criminal outlander that wanted to relieve the innocent inhabitants of Raelia of their precious nels!

On the other hand, he realized, as he waited for Ashling to answer the woman’s next couple of question, if Solveig was so thorough, nobody would ever be able to doubt that he actually deserved being a citizen. He would be beyond reproach, and ultimately, that was a good thing. He didn’t want anybody to doubt that he actually belonged here, and think that he was just an outlander of questionable past and questionable motives. He wanted to be a part of this nation, through and through, and be a respected member of Melrathi society!

(He would still make weird sculptures, talk to cats and wrap pretty ribbons around his potion vials though!)

When Ashling began to speak and explained the political set-up of Rynmere, he looked at her proudly. Comparing the dukes of Rynmere to the jarls was a good idea in his opinion; it would make it easier for Solveig to understand how that foreign country worked. Upon hearing Ashling speak about wasteful people, he furrowed his brow very lightly though. He supposed that he had been a bit wasteful in the past; in fact, he still was sometimes, he had moved past the point where he had just been a spoiled young noble though and grown up.

Whenever Ashling paused for a bit, Tristan looked at his fiancée encouragingly because it was obvious to him that she was a bit nervous and wondering if she was doing okay; he didn’t raise his voice though, not even once, because he didn’t want to give Solveig the impression that he was trying to influence his witness and persuading her to say something in particular. He’d never do that, and he trusted Ashling with everything that he had. She was absolutely fantastic!

So, instead, he stood there, trying to look calm and composed.

When Ashling finally started to talk about how he had been forced into exile, a dark look crossed his face for a moment though. Most of the time, he was fine nowadays, and he absolutely loved his new life with Ashling. Thinking about what he had lost – or hearing about it – still hurt every now and then though, even though it had been several arcs at this point. He listened attentively nevertheless though. He was impressed by how Ashling handled this complicated and somewhat traumatic topic. Did she know that the leader of the rebellion had been the husband of his cousin Zvezdana though?

When Ashling mentioned that a weird plague had followed in the wake of the civil war and talked about the rise of the Order of the Mantis, he furrowed his brow barely noticeably for a moment. Ellasin’s plague had only happened later, but there had been another disease in Rynmere (which had led to surgical masks becoming some sort of fashion accessory for a while). With that thought in mind, he continued to listen as she talked about how he became an able man who knew how to work and carry his own weight.

When she finished her speech by mentioning how he had taken part in the ritual sacrifices and would work with House Magnus and their alchemists, Tristan was convinced that they were done, and Solveig would hand him his paperwork and congratulate him on becoming a citizen – and state that Melrath would be lucky to have someone like him. Instead, the woman had more questions – and mentioned his family in Rynmere.

Was she implying that he was an irresponsible man who didn’t care what happened to his family and his servants, as long as his daughter and he survived? Was she implying that he was a coward? He was not a great hero, he had to admit that, but he would never abandon his family to save his own hide. That would be mean and cruel and selfish, and it was not right!

When he heard Ashling’s words, he was inclined to agree with her – he was quite furious as well – but then he took a deep breath instead and forced himself to calm down. Losing his temper would do no good now. On the contrary, it would likely have the opposite effect. Solveig was only doing her duty, and it made sense that she was subjecting him to the same expectations as if he were a jarl. Such people should set an example.

With that thought in mind, he took a deep breath before he answered in a polite and friendly tone of voice, “I had no idea how bad things would get in Rynmere. There was a period of calm following the civil war. For that reason, I decided to visit the island of Scalvoris. The university there has a good reputation, and I wanted to finish my studies of alchemy – and attend a symposium. Padraig Augustin granted me my Letter while I was there, due to my invention of an invisible box”, he spoke. The name would likely be familiar to her. Faith and Padraig Augustin were among the most famous couples in the world. Once upon a time, he had hated Padraig, because he had married Faith, but they had gradually come to an understanding.

He did not mention Padraig’s name (or his invention) in order to brag though, but so that Solveig would know that he had not simple gone on some sort of holiday. He had participated in an important meeting, finished his education and furthered his understanding of science, so that he would be able to help even more people and invent more useful things. He had not relaxed on the beach, at least not most of the time!

“I left everything in good hands while I went abroad”, he told Solveig in a firm tone of voice. “At the time, none of my family needed my help. Everybody was doing well. While I was in Scalvoris, the situation escalated though, quite unexpectedly. I tried to return to Rynmere, but none of the captains that I talked to were willing to take me to the island. All the harbors were closed due to the plague, and even reaching the Eastern Settlement constituted a considerable challenge. I couldn’t do anything”, he said, his voice trembling slightly now.

He was not acting, and he was not trying to make Solveig pity him; his sorrow was genuine.

“I’ve been agonizing over it ever since. The love for my daughter kept me going though. I needed to keep her safe and find a new home for both of us, a safe heaven far away from all the things that trouble other parts of this world. Melrath turned out to be that place”, he finished and proceeded to meet Solveig’s gaze.

She looked at him thoughtfully for a moment before she nodded and remarked, “I heard something like that, that the harbors of Rynmere were closed and nobody could get into or out of Rynmere. For what it’s worth, I hope that you will eventually see your family again – or bring them here, and I hope that they are well.” She said the last words in a softer tone of voice. Solveig was strict, and a bit of a zealot, but she was not without empathy. And besides, Tristan’s story reminded her of the first settlers in Melrath. They had been looking for a new home as well and found it there.

“I just have one more question, and then I will make my decision”, she continued after a moment of silence. “From what you have told me so far, it sounds as if you are raising your daughter alone. What happened to her mother? Are you a widower, or divorced? I think I’d like to hear the answer from you”, she decided and looked at Ashling. “Did your fiancé ever talk about the mother of his daughter – and why she plays no part in his life?”

Tristan’s answer to the question had been so honest...and honesty was a success factor in Melrath. He had neither been a hero nor a coward, just a man who had undertaken a journey for good reasons and been unable to return home. Now there was only one final question for Ashling to answer and that question was about Ayla and her mother.

“Yes. We have spoken about Ayla. She is a lovely little girl. As she is going to be my daughter as well I have of course inquired about her mother and how Tristan became a single father.”

Solveig nodded and made a note.

Ashling continued. “At first I was under the impression that Tristan was a widower or divorced but I didn’t want to ask about it at once. Our betrothal was so new. The death of a partner is not a topic to broach lightly. And divorce can be a touchy topic. Some part as friends and collaborate well after their marriage is over. Others part as foes and will never again be able to tolerate each other. I found it best to wait for Tristan to tell me the story about Ayla. I felt sure that he would tell me when he was ready to do it.”

Solveig made one more note.

“But, Ayla mentioned a woman named ... Valeria. At first it seemed like that woman was the child’s mother. She wasn’t though. Tristan had engaged to marry her when he already had Ayla. But, she had ended the engagement in favour of scholar pursuits. She was more interested in studies than in becoming the mother of Ayla. Tristan and she parted ways without any hard feelings.”

Once again Solveig made a note. “And then?”

“Tristan told about Ayla’s mother. He led another life in the past, as a young nobleman in a foreign country. He had a liaison with a woman, nothing serious, only a temporary thing. Tristan thought no more about it when he didn’t see her for a long time but one day she turned up with a baby and said it was his. Tristan didn’t question it. He was a rich man and had no troubles providing for Ayla and besides I think the girl resembles him a bit, although she is still very small. She’s a sweet little darling and so easy to love. Tristan didn’t leave her to others but decided to raise her himself. He has been Ayla’s father ever since that day, but he never saw the mother again. All that woman wanted was to leave the child to him and continue with her own life.”

“Thanks. I will now look through my notes and make my decision.”

Solveig started checking the notes she had made during the whole interview. Ashling began feeling tense and a bit nervous again. She glanced at Tristan and gave him a smile she hoped looked encouraging. Soon...

Solveig looked at them again. She was smiling and her voice was warm. “I’m happy to welcome you as a citizen in Melrath, Tristan Venora. You and Ashling have answered all questions sufficiently and in a trustworthy manner. I know that the procedure can be emotionally taxing but it’s the same for all applicants. The benefit is that once somebody has been approved all will know that they are a worthy new citizen.”

Ashling wasn’t a wonder of self-control, discipline and etiquette so she cheered aloud and threw herself at Tristan to hug him in euphoria over the success. Yes! Yes, yes, yes!

“Erm, one more thing ...” said Solveig. “I’m glad that you are so happy, but we aren’t done yet.”

Ashling did her best to compose but she wondered what more there could be to say. Weren’t they done with the approval and welcome now?

“As a new citizen you are entitled to wear an embla. It’s not a must, but I advise you to do it if you want to blend in and be respected. All good and reliable people use to wear them. I don’t know what kind of Embla you would like? Military people like tattoos, artisans often prefer colourful painted emblas, others again like the kind of embla your fiancée wears, a thin ornament of metal. People of high social standing tend to like golden emblas.”

The embla! How could Ashling have forgotten that?

Solveig continued. “How would you like to do with the embla, citizen Venora? If you want it painted in place or have brought an ornament to fasten I am able to help you with it at once. But, you can also do it yourself later, if you find that better.”

Ashling, recalling what Tristan had told her about his ideas for an embla was exited for his answer. As his family she of course wished to give him the embla herself but the ceremony might be more “official” if Solveig did it. Not that she knew what Tristan would prefer. He was an artist so he might want to do it himself.

Re: A Petition

When Solveig asked Ashling about Ayla’s mother, Tristan was impressed by his fiancée’s foresight once again. She had really thought of everything. He found it a little strange that the clerk wanted to know the story from her rather than from him even though he was Ayla’s father and had experienced everything first-hand. But then again, it seemed as if she wanted to make sure that he had been honest with Ashling and that there were no secrets between them. A part of him actually approved of that kind of attitude!

When Ashling called Ayla a lovely girl, Tristan smiled warmly at her because he knew that she truly meant it. Valeria, he remembered, had always been a little hesitant around his daughter, even before she had found out that she was a Mortalborn. There had never been any of that when it came to Ashling though, and she had never pretended to like Ayla because of him either. It was obvious that she truly cared about her!

Ashling didn’t just mention that she had thought he was a widower or divorced at first; she also explained why she hadn’t broached the topic immediately. He was a bit surprised that she mentioned Valeria, but he did not mind. Their relationship was not a secret. He had enjoyed their time together. Valeria was a Blessed of Zanik, just like he was. He had thought that he had loved her at the time, but with Ashling, everything was so much better!

He was so incredibly lucky that he had found her. She didn’t only love him, she also loved his child!

For a moment, his heart swelled with happiness, but when Solveig stated that she would look through her notes and make a decision, he felt a little uneasy again all of a sudden, even though it didn’t make any sense at all. Why should Solveig deny him citizenship? There was nothing wrong with love at first sight – in fact, it was nothing short of a miracle in his opinion – and if she denied him citizenship because he had had a child out of wedlock … there was nothing wrong with Ayla, and if Solveig criticized him and subsequently his daughter, then he didn’t want to have anything to do with her, anyway!

When Ashling smiled at him encouragingly, he quietly took her hand, if she allowed it, and then he waited, his heart beating slightly faster than it had had before, for Solveig to raise her voice again. When the clerk finally began to speak, her voice was warm, and she was quite friendly. Apparently, she had really only wanted to do her job thoroughly, but now that she had made sure that he was not some sort of evil criminal (or a man of questionable morals), she actually was happy for him – for both of them, in fact!

“I thank you, Mrs. Andersson”, he replied and smiled, a wide smile, when she congratulated him. “And I’m glad that you asked so many questions and didn’t rush the process. What you did speaks well of you in my opinion. I would likely have done the same, had I been in your place”, he added. He was not trying to humor her, he really thought so. He wanted to say more, but then Ashling suddenly cheered loudly, threw herself at him and hugged him.

In this moment, Tristan didn’t care about propriety and etiquette and such things, he just put his arms around Ashling and hugged her in return, and then he kissed her because he couldn’t resist and because he was so very happy. When Solveig interrupted them and mentioned that there was one more thing (accompanied by a light chuckle, as if she didn’t mind that they had gotten carried away, but was actually quite amused), he abruptly froze and made a step back though, blushing very lightly as he did so.

What else was there to do?

Did he have to sign something?

That kind of made sense, he decided.

When Solveig explained that he was entitled to wear an embla now, he felt rather stupid for a moment because he had forgotten all about it. That was a feeling that he didn’t enjoy particularly though, so he decided to focus on what Solveig said rather than on his embarrassment. When she mentioned that she could help him at once if he wanted to have his embla painted, he didn’t doubt her ability as an artist as others must have.

She seemed like a fairly competent and trustworthy woman!

“I would like to have it painted, Mrs. Andersson”, he told Solveig in a firm and polite tone of voice and exchanged a glance with Ashling before he faced the clerk again. He had considered doing it himself – he was a decent artist – or asking Ashling for her help, but if Solveig helped him, it might be more official. Besides, she might appreciate it if he trusted her enough to give him his embla! With that thought in mind, he continued,

“And I would be honored if you could paint my embla, Mrs. Andersson. I want it to be golden, with hints of silver, and on the left side of my face, above the markings that I already have”, he told her and explained the design that he had in mind to her and why he had chosen it, vines, to represent his being an alchemist and his love of plants.

“The honor is mine”, Solveig replied. Her tone of voice was serious, but her eyes twinkled slightly. She was quite happy that she had been chosen to do his embla. A lot of new citizens did it themselves or went to a different artist. She loved helping people with their first steps in their new life in Melrath though, even though she didn’t always show it (such would be unprofessional). “Follow me, please, citizen Venora. There is a room that is better suited for that kind of ceremony – and spiritual experience. It shouldn’t be conducted in an office”, she told him as she rose to her feet.

“Your papers, by the way”, she told him and handed him the papers in question. “Keep them in a safe place. I wish your fiancée and you the best luck when it comes to your future together”, she added before she gestured for him – and Ashling – to come with her. Tristan did so without hesitation and with a smile on his face. For a moment, he felt as if he were bursting with energy and could embrace the entire world. When Solveig painted the vines that he had asked for, in shimmering gold and silver, he sat completely still though. He didn’t want her to make a mistake because he moved; and besides, it was such an important moment!

When she let him take a look at his reflection in the mirror, his eyes widened. The design was beautiful! A moment later, he turned to Ashling and smiled at her. Now, their life together could truly begin. Nothing and nobody would stand in their way anymore!

The Duke of Oakleigh who lived in Scalvoris and is now a citizen of Melrath... Is Tristan still a Duke though?

Magic: No magic exp

Other: +5 fame for getting yourself a citizenship. Your Embla is visible after exiting the office, and people take notice! The design is aesthetically pleasing and attracts attention, and Tristan might find his newly acquired citizenship to be a prevalent subject of gossip for the coming days.

Notes:
I do appreciate Tristan's musings about his Duchy. I'm not sure what happened in canon during all those years he's been away (apart from the plague ravaging further), and I do wonder if Cassander ever did appoint a new duke to replace Tristan. It would be quite fun, I think, for Tristan to eventually return to Rynmere (if it ever opens again) and find someone else in his mansion, sitting at his desk, having 'usurped' Tristan's position... but I digress. In general, I do like Tristan's thoughts when they drift to the past, or to the future. Like when he thought about his wedding and his family who wouldn't be able to attend. I think it speaks volumes about Tristan's outlook on life that he doesn't even seem to consider not all of his family might be alive anymore, despite the plague in Rynmere.

Oh, and I absolutely love the nods to Cassander's possible madness, Emmerson's possible hand in it, and the destruction wrought by the Mantis. Tristan was right to flee, I think. The situation was becoming worse and worse with every passing day, and eventually the Mantis might have taken notice of Ayla... Perhaps leaving a Duchy isn't responsible, but making a hard choice to give up everything to protect your child is commendable, if nothing else.

You both did wonderful work with the interview. It was far more involved than I had expected, with actual questions and a very nosey official. I'd thought it'd be more of a formality, but it was rather in depth, and I got the feeling you didn't make it easy for yourselves. And the way you both managed to take control of the NPC and keep her consistent is also a big accomplishment. I, for one, always worry that I'll ruin an NPC someone else has brought into the story, so I was very impressed. Not to mention each of you having the NPC shoot questions to the other player as well to keep them engaged. Awesome!

I think the start of the interview was brilliant. Rather than just launching into it, you gave Ashling an amazing prompt for the coming posts, loading a lot more responsibility on her shoulders. Very good co-op writing!

Minor nitpicks. Ehm. Well, there's been several run-on sentences in your posts. At this point I consider them more a hallmark of your writing style than anything else, but I feel those parts would read smoother if those sentences were split in multiple parts. They tend to drag on a bit, and sometimes the length makes them a tad confusing.

Magic: No magic exp

Other: Unfortunately, Tristan's new Embla hogs the attention from those who see you exit the office and stroll about the city, and Ashling's presence is not really talked about. Seeing Ashling with Tristan is nothing new. Tristan's Embla is. Sorry...

Notes:
Oh, Ashling is absolutely delightful! She's such a lovely and kind person, and reads completely genuine. I've not read much of this character, I will admit, but I would be honestly surprised if she had the capacity for deceit and malice. Her kindness bleeds through in how she speaks and acts, not just her inner monologue, and I love it. You can tell by her viewpoint just how much she adores Tristan, and it's... well... adorable. I really get the sense that when she says "I would do anything for you, Tristan" that she actually means it, and that it's not just a shallow statement. Call me sappy, call it cliché (it kind of is, tbh), but I think the way you can have Ashling say such things without sounding trite or disingenuous is pretty neat.

You did a great job having Ashling struggle to put into words why Tristan should be a citizen. There was clear hesitation and self doubt within Ashling as she tried to convince the official. Which is only natural, it's supposed to be a very stressful event, and doubly so if you could be responsible for Tristan not being accepted.

You both did wonderful work with the interview. It was far more involved than I had expected, with actual questions and a very nosey official. Not to mention each of you having the NPC shoot questions to the other player as well to keep them engaged. Awesome!

I was a little worried when Ashling started to ...ehm... embellish some details here and there, and I'm not sure whether that was due to the nerves or if they were a conscious decision on her part. I might have to adjust my views of her a little bit.

I have one minor nitpick. I'm not a fan of the blinking text you use for the familiar. It's distracting and a bit annoying, though it's tolerable for a one-word sentence. Still, I don't like it, and would suggest leaving it out altogether. The difference in alignment of the text does enough to make the familiar's telepathy stand out.
