Purple Night

Image
Purple Night is known to be the flower of love in Desnind. Blooming at night the purple rose seems to almost glow in the moonlight, there is one night of the month that it will not bloom. The night of the new moon when there is no moonlight in the sky. During the day the buds stay closed hiding the beauty away from the sun light. There is a legend that surrounds the flower, it is said that if one is picked on the night of the full moon at the peak of the bloom and given to the person's crush or spouse, then they are destined to be together forever.

Description
Appearance: The Purple Night is a beautiful purple colored rose with a hint of pink at the edge of the petals and a solid black stem
Location: Purple Night grows all over Desnind; the stems grow all over the trees much like climbing ivy. They grow all the way up into the top of the canopies of the trees in the city. It is very rare, but there are even some that grow in the swamps outside the city.
Hazard / Toxicity
Uses: There is not hazard or toxicity to the flower. It does have a very beautiful scent that is said to rival that most fragrant flowers in the city

Fecrier

Fecrier

Image
Name: Fecrier aka "Rash Cups"
Fecrier is a beautiful white flower that grows on the edge of the swamp. Though it looks beautiful the flower hides a very mischievous secret. It has gained the name Rash Cups. One day a group of children were playing at the edge of the swamp and brushed against the flowers getting the pollen all over themselves. Thinking nothing of it they returned home, several hours later the little ones were covered in a blistering red rash that seemed to come out of nowhere. It took nearly a day for the doctors to get the children to tell them where they had been that day. Once they found out about the strange plant, several blooms were collected and a healing salve was made from the cups of the leaves.
Description
Appearance: Beautiful white petals with a purple center is the first thing a person sees within the center is bright yellow stamens. The petals form the shape of a crystal before looping around themselves and forming into cups on the end of each petal. These cups are big enough for small insects to land on and feed from. The stem is a beautiful dark green color that helps bring out the white of the petals.
Location: Fecrier's are found on the outside of the city limits growing at the very beginning of the swamps
Hazard / Toxicity
Uses: The flower's pollen can be used to create a rash causing gel. While just the cups of the flowers makes a soothing salve.

Rocush

Rocush

Image
Name: Rocush
Overview: Growing deep within the swamp is a beautiful solid pink flower call Rocush. The flower is beautiful to look at from a distance. But up close it can be very deadly to be near especially to children. The flower is not rare in the city of Desnind, but outside there are no known locations that grow the plant naturally. Only the most experienced foragers are sent to retrieve the flowers from within the swamp. The trip in to get it is just as dangerous as bringing it back to the city. Special bags are made to carry it back without hurting the forager.

Appearance: The flower is a beautiful pink color with five petals that grows in early fall very late summer. The blooms start out as a dark red bloom that finally starts to lighten up as the flower prepares to bloom. It grows in clusters ranging from five flowers to upwards of twelve.
Location: Deep within the Swamp near Desnind
Hazard / Toxicity: Yes
Uses: Rocush has a horrid smell that can cause hallucination in adults within five bits of smelling it. Once harvested it is used to make one of the most deadly poisons known in Desnind. If a child is subjected to the scent, they pass out within ten bits. If exposed longer then it can cause death.

Mïo’ṣẹẹlï

Mïo’ṣẹẹlï
Image
Name: Mïo’ṣẹẹlï (“heart in the waters” is the rough translation, also sometimes just “seeli” for short)
Overview
This is a “jack of all trades” aquatic weed. It can be eaten raw or cooked. Can be dried and weaved into baskets, hats, shoes, clothes, and rope similar to certain grasses on land. It can be used as bandages in dire need. There isn’t a native to Desnind who hasn’t used an item made from this plant.
Height: 3 feet long at most
Width: 3.5 inches

Description
While most people are not going to want to eat this weed, in dire situations the mïo’ṣẹẹlï is a welcome meal. It’s said to taste like bitter mud but the effect it has when eaten is well worth the affronted taste buds. Sev’ryn say if someone chose to they could live off of this plant solely. They wouldn’t gain any weight and would remain healthy until their dying day. That being said due to the taste you wouldn’t see mïo’ṣẹẹlï in any Sev’ryn dishes in Desnind. Some hunters or explorers may choose to eat this when out in the Lori if foraging and hunting is sparse.

You will always be able to find mïo’ṣẹẹlï in the deep swamp pits of the Makubwa Lori. It grows in shin to chest deep water (for the average person). It’s called a weed because it’s so common throughout places there are swamp in the Lori. The base of the mïo’ṣẹẹlï weed is anchored in the submerged soil by its roots but can grow long enough to have its upper portion float at the top of the water, appearing almost folded if it is very long and the water is shallow. This kind is easiest for harvesting and idea for drying.

While it grows freely throughout the swamps it also grows in the Tosibeere River and this is where a lot of the harvesting is done when it’s used for weaving as a portion of the Tosibeere River is nearby Desnind. People have been using mïo’ṣẹẹlï for weaving for as long as anyone can remember. A good portion of cheap baskets, shoes, hats, and rope is made from this if you are in Desnind, these items are common and cheaply priced-- though not always cheaply made. Mïo’ṣẹẹlï is sturdy through a few hard uses and retains water well when expertly weaved into a basket.

Appearance: Long, reddish brown, and wide. Translucent. It’s flexible and sticky in its raw/natural form. When dried it is dark brown and textured with small ridges, it bends in this form like dried grass.
Location: Swamps of Makubwa Lori, Tosiberre River

Hazard / Toxicity
It's possible to get tangled in these if you're not paying attention while swimming.

Uses:
Eating- When eaten raw this weed is chewy, tough, and gritty at the same time. It breaks apart in the mouth as if eating chewy leaves. The flavor is most pungent raw and depending on where it’s growing may take on the surrounding water’s flavor. For example, if the mïo’ṣẹẹlï is found in a still, stinking bog it will not only taste like bitter mud but also bog water. On the contrary when harvested from the Tosibeere River it tastes not exactly good but cleaner than anything you will pull from a swamp. When mïo’ṣẹẹlï is cooked some of the natural flavor is lessened, though never gone completely, and is similar to okra in that it produces a slime as it cooks. The best way to cook this is to fry it first, if sticking it in a stew, or simply wrap around a stick and let it smoke/cook. In fact smoked, salted mïo’ṣẹẹlï is some (brave) Sev’ryn’s favorite treat when out in the Lori. It’s true when they say you can live off of this plant for long periods of time, though it’s not the most tasty or varied meal option.

Drying/Weaving- Wooden drying racks and a partially shaded, airy spot is all that’s needed to dry the mïo’ṣẹẹlï. It takes on average 48 breaks to fully dry a haul of mïo’ṣẹẹlï. If the mïo’ṣẹẹlï is left to dry out in complete baking sun it will burn and crumble, being unfit to use. Weaving is done similar to long grasses. It’s not possible to make mïo’ṣẹẹlï into a true textile in the cotton or linen sense, but crude items can be made if you have a mind to do it. Items will serve their purpose but are not particularly long lasting. A good beginner’s crafting item.

Bandaging- Not commonly used but possible dry or wet but always raw, DO NOT COOK! This would never be an end all, be all scenario but in a dire situation one could successfully keep a wound clean and covered using the mïo’ṣẹẹlï. Dry bandages keep longer on average than wet ones as the wet ones are prone to allowing blood to leak-- especially if the wound is deep.

Cani’sliwa

Cani’sliwa
Image
Name: Cani’sliwa ("Dog’s Hair")

Overview
Dog’s hair is a pleasant sight around the Lori and is considered a weed to most common people. During Yimden and Saun the glowing, flying “hairs” are everywhere on the wind getting all over the place, giving the plant its name. Holistic healers rely heavily on every aspect of this plant and alchemists around Idalos covet the Night-Light Powder made from its seeds.

Description
Medicine women have been using this plant for arcs upon arcs. The health benefits are numerous and it would be well loved if the seeds didn’t overtake the winds during the Hot Cycle. Luckily these plants only grow by water, similar in that way to cattails else all of Desnind and the Lori would have these growing in every nook, cranny, and corner after their spreading season. While most people see them as a nuisance, there are some who find their glowing seeds to be beautiful and haunting. Others genuinely love the flowers and will press them into books. It’s common for those in love to make wreaths for each other on the banks of the Tosibree out of this flower.

It’s said Moseke created cani’sliwa to light the way for travellers in the dark corners of the Makubwa Lori. Indeed, in some of the thicker, swampy areas of the forest it would be a welcome sight for there to be some light shed. Night-light powder created by the seeds is easy to make even for a novice alchemist and has saved more than one person lost in the Lori. Another reagent made by it is "Dog’s Hair Juice", a commodity for adventurers who want a steroid in battle. Healers in Desnind love this plant for its many herbal uses as well, often people who come in looking for a vitamin or stomach remedy get handed this plant in one form or another.

Appearance: Cani’sliwa is a long, wiry plant with one to three thin stalks and spiky leaves. “Dog’s hair” grows in clusters of around 15 to 20 plants, plant each sporting five flowers a piece. The plants grow to about two feet high and the light pink flowers are an inch wide in diameter. As the flowers mature and become seed they turn into glowing, fluffy hairballs that when blown disperse and ride the wind. The glow is light pink in color and dull, though at night the sight of a massive amount of these could be equally haunting or beautiful. The root is similar in appearance to a dandelion’s root and is well anchored, it can be hard to remove by hand.
Location: In shady areas of the Makubwa Lori and always near water. Found all along the Tosibeere River. In Desnind by ponds there is sometimes some stray plants but they are almost always uprooted quickly, you won't usually come across them in the city.

Hazard / Toxicity
None other than stepping on it, the leaves have spikes.
Image
Uses:
Seeds- The seeds are used in alchemy to make a glow-in-the-dark powder that never washes off or fades for 20 trials. (Night-light Powder)

Flower- Crushing, boiling, and distilling the flower petals into a potion that can be used to rid folks of bruises and fatigue, even staving away exhaustion. (Dog’s Hair Juice)
Non-alchemical uses have the petals just being blended into a smoothie or other drink. The flowers have well known benefits for helping stomach ulcers or mouth ulcers. They are full of antioxidants as well. It also helps with pain, though nominally and not usually taken for this purpose when made into a drink.

Leaves and stalk- The leaves and stalk of this plant are full of sugar and flavor. These are often made into a homemade wine that the native to Desnind affectionately call “woof wine” as they say it will have you barking mad and on all fours like a dog at the end of the night. It’s of similar quality to moonshine and will often have other flavors or berries added to it.
The leaves in particular are used in holistic healing as a poultice for things such as abscesses or other sores, cuts, or scrapes on the body. After the spikes have been scraped off of course!

Root- The root is dried and cut up or made into a powder. Some people take the powder as a vitamin for all sorts of benefits. Heart health, blood health, memory, detoxification. This makes the root quite the commodity though dried it has a shelf life of only 85 days. It must be refined into the powder and stored in a cool, dark, dry place to keep for arcs.

Brinesap Rot

Brinesap Rot
Image
Name: Brinesap Rot
A mushroom that only grows in salt licks and other areas with brackish salty water, it climbs across the trunks of trees and cliffs growing vertically over surfaces it encounters. The Brinesap garners it's name from the salty yellow sap that oozes from it coding it in a veil of thick protective slime hardening it against hostile environments and making it unappealing for most creatures to snack on. It's favorite thing to grow on is rotting wood that's been permeated by salt like driftwood or mangrove trees making it relatively easy to transplant if one understands the plants needs.

Appearance: A fungus of sickly greens and yellows with occasional flecks of deep purples in older instances of the fungus. it's easy to locate by it's rotting fish like smell and easy to identify by the mucus yellow slime that coats them.
Location: Gwalos
Hazard / Toxicity: Touching the slime with your bear hands with cause mild irritation due to it's mild acidity and high salt content making it especially irritating should it inter a wound.
Uses: The Slime can be harvested and used as a strong preservative though it's acidic nature causes it to slowly destroy whatever it's preserving. However a reasonably able alchemist with knowledge of acids and bases could likely refine it.

Edibility: It's a very slimy, very salty fungus, with a flavor not unlike fermented anchovies. A large quantity would likely make anyone sick if they could stomach the snot like texture. It coule likely be dried into some srot of seasoning for the bold however....

Other things of note
One of it's strongest characteristics is it's strong rotting fish like smell that it passes onto anything it comes into contact with, it can take up to a couple trials if one got enough on them

Moukou

Moukou
Image
Name: Moukou
Overview: The Moukou tree is a native to Desnind although it is scattered throughout Southern Idalos and is not unknown on other continents. A towering tree, Desnind farms them in order to harvest the very useful bean, wood and bark
Description: Very common in Desnind. Because of their need for the specific climate, they are rare elsewhere in the world, although they are common throughout most of Southern Idalos.
Appearance: Ranging from 25ft to 30ft tall, this tree is tall and thin. Every part of this hardy tree is useful and the residents of Desnind use it to its fullest. The beans of this tree grow in rough pods which hold four or sometimes five beans.
Location: Common throughout Desnind. There are also a number of Moukou farms in the near surrounds.
Hazard / Toxicity: None
Uses:
  • The Moukou Bean: This small, roughly spherical, brown bean has a number of uses.
    • Medicine ~ The Moukou bean has medicinal uses. It is a sedative and two beans usually will put an adult to sleep within bits (minutes). It also acts as an analgesic, relieving pain.
    • Cooking ~ The Moukou bean can be eaten raw or cooked. When cooked, it is often made into a sweet paste which is a firm favorite among children as it is popularly used as a frosting for cakes.
    • Food & Drinks ~ The raw Moukou bean has a sweet sugary taste that make them popular with children and also quite addictive. However hot moukou is a favorite Desnind warm drink and dried moukou is used in sweets and crushed as a seasoning.
  • The Moukou Pod & Leaf: These are thick, deep green and rough to the touch.
    • Textile Production ~ Both the leaf and the pod that the beans come in are able to be used in Textile Production. They have to undergo a process of drying and pulping, but then these plain and rather rough raw materials can be turned into a beautiful, naturally deep green Moukou Silk.
    • Field Craft ~ The pod is a good source of water and can be squeezed for liquid. The juice of the pod is slightly sweet. Whereas, the leaf is an excellent source of kindling and will light, even when wet.
  • The Moukou Wood & Bark: Most Moukou Trees are roughly 2ft to 3ft thick and the wood is the deep green of the pod and leaf.
    • Medicine ~ The bark of the Moukou Tree can be fermented into a tea which increases fertility in males and females. The wood can be pulped and applied to a wound to promote healing and halt or ward off infection.
    • Woodworking ~ The wood of the Moukou Tree is very beautiful if worked to a shine. It is durable and naturally not damaged by water. Much of the wood furnishings in Desnind are made from Moukou Wood.

Syanan Okan

Syanan Okan
Image
Name: Syanan Okan
Overview: A beautiful flower found in Desnind with particular links to Dreamwalking.
Appearance: The Syanan Okan is a small flower which grows at the end of a stem around 4 inches in length from the main stem. With silky smooth, purple petals and black pistils in the center of the flower is quite beautiful although rather difficult to admire due to its location of growth and time of bloom. Yet a lucky few may attest to its beauty; however, the majority have never had the chance to see the flowers.
Location: The flower is found in the Makabwa Lori and grows high in the old trees. The main stem of the flower will wrap itself around the branches of a tree. The smaller stems of the flowers will grow and the heads will appear atop those stems.
Hazard / Toxicity: Too much ingestion of this plant, especially in its unprocessed form, can cause the individual to fall into a coma. This has been used by doctors when necessary.
Uses:
Unprocessed
The unprocessed flower can cause a state of strong relaxation when ingested. Since the flower has very few unprocessed properties and effects, it is in no way dangerous in this form. The flower petals can be processed to make a strong hallucinogenic known as the 'itaja sọ besvon ma'aikata. This is roughly translated to common as "causer of waking dreams" or more directly as "maker of awake dreams."

Processed
The drug is a processed form of the petals from the Syanan Okan. The petals are dried out in a cool and dry area, normally a basement or drying room. The longer the petals are allowed to dry the stronger the effects of the drug. When removed from this location, if not stored correctly, the petals will lose their effect within approximately 30 trials. If stored well the petals can be kept up to 140 trials after being removed from the drying room. The petals have lost their purple colour by the time they are ready for use and are a brown, shriveled petal which can flake quite easily and dissolves in water. Warm water speeds up the time for the petals to dissolve and also weakens the pungent taste.

How To Use
The dried petals are dissolved in warm water and the drink is then consumed. A very simple method of taking the drug is also to directly consume the dried petals; however, most users prefer to drink the fluid than chew on the dry substance.

Side Effects
The drug causes strong and vivid hallucinations that are believed to reveal a persons deepest feelings. These hallucinations have been described by many as like a dream, hence the name sake of the drug. Itaja sọ besvon ma'aikata is roughly translated to common as "causer of waking dreams." The drug has been said to be highly addictive and if taken more than twice can be very hard to stop. Repeated use the drug can cause the following: dependency, psychosis, violence, and, from extreme use, loss of mental capacity. If taken in excess the drug can cause the user to fall into a comma and in even higher doses the drug can cause complete paralysis and suffocation. When trying to give up use of the drugs, frequent users can find themselves in a great amount of pain from stomach cramps, headaches and muscle aches, as well as extreme mental side affects including depression, schizophrenia, and violence.

Status
There is no specific law relating to this drug and views of the drug vary throughout the city of Desnind, where it is predominantly used. Most people view the use of the drug frequently as foolish and irresponsible. Since the drug is believed to reveal the deepest and darkest parts of yourself, the drug has been used by some as a method to explore one's mind. A handful of people within the Sevir society would even recommend the drug to young adults who are still struggling to choose their path.
