The shallow bay Egilrun is situated upon is used, these trials, for crafts and crafting. From boatmakers to weaponsmiths, glassblowers to metalworkers, the sound of hammers and saws can be heard almost every break of the trial, with crews working in shifts to produce the beautiful craftsmanship which they might, one trial, become famous for.

Alone, Finally.

16th of Ymiden 721

Early Ymiden had been a flurry of social exposure, the likes of which threatened to overwhelm Woe at times. Whether it was this or that person clamoring for his time and attention. His children, Soraia, the Order of the Adunih business, Element business. Too many distractions pulled him in every which direction.

Finally, he had a moment to himself to parse what needed doing in Egilrun. Last season had proven fruitless in the effort to expose the anti-mage faction of Egilrun. And now the cat was out of the bag so to speak. Woe’s status as a mage would be well known at this point, certainly known to any secret society that made its business being aware of such things. He was a liability to the cause of outing the centipede. He’d need agents to do his work, but also, he’d need public relations person to deal with the sentiment that the Centipede kicked up in their fervor to stir people up against mages in general.

As one who’d kept his ear to the ground for several seasons now, Woe had learned of one particular point of contact within the Viden Academy, in Scalvoris’ campus. He was a well-regarded professor, and many other things besides. Perhaps a mage as well, although Woe didn’t know that for certain. What he did know, was that the individual knew much about magic, having an advanced degree int eh study of arcana, enough that he could teach it.

Woe needed this person, this Doctor Thorn, in order to drum up some pro-mage sentiment. Worst case scenario, he’d draw attention to himself from the Centipede, and get himself into a spot of hot water. In the best case, he could reverse the tide against the growing anti-mage movement. If Woe let this continue for many more seasons, they could end up with a situation akin to the Rynmere mage burnings. That was obviously something he wished to avoid, a Scalvoris was reasonably accepting of mages, with few exceptions made for the less admirable of magical fields.

So Woe invoked his Isolating calm, of Chamadarst’s blessing. Enjoying the silence was essential to clear his mind, and write what he needed to convince this Devin Thorn to visit Egilrun, or at the very least recommend someone who could start an educational program to build a levy against the tide of mage hatred.

He dipped his quill in the inkpot, and began scrawling his message, heedless of the crowd noise filtering in from the floors below his room in the North Lodge.

He started with what he already knew to write. The address, the date, the salutation. Then he paused over the exact argument and persuasion tactic he wished to employ. He didn’t want to alarm Doctor Thorn with rumors of anti-mage sentiment. After all, it was only a rumor as far as the rest of the town knew. He didn’t actually know how well spread that rumor was, but it’d reached a few ears since it came to light a few seasons ago.

Shaking his head clear of the confusion and thoughts, he began writing his message.

16th of Ymiden 721

To: Baron Smooglenuff
From: Woe Morandi

Your lordship:

I don’t believe we’ve met, but I have heard much about you. Particularly with regard to your astute study of the arcane arts. I don’t know if you are a mage, and if you are or not is irrelevant to my purpose. It is, however, on the basis of your reputation as a scholar of magic, that I call on you now.

I wish to make a proposal. I will offer a stipend either to you personally or a donation to the cause of your choice. For this, I ask only that you call on me in the North End Lodge in Egilrun. I wish to discuss an educational program for the people of Egilrun, to learn more about magic, and spread magic acceptance.

Magic is a tool, neither good nor bad, but in the right hands, it can accomplish great good. This is the core value I wish to instill in the children of Egilrun.

Sincerely,
Woe Morandi.

Having written the thing, he sent word for Gloom to join him in the North End Lodge, later on, to treat him to some good drinks and also persuade him to carry the letter to the Baron, wherever he could be found.

Re: Alone, Finally.

There was a time when Woe felt that loneliness was more of an affliction. A time when he craved the human connection he'd been deprived of in his youth. That was before he met Chamadarst, and began growing in his influence. Until fairly recently, he thought that having people behind him gave him a measure of strength, and that having their backs in turn did the same. Chamadarst had schooled him thoroughly in the Glass Temple, engraving the lessons of neutrality and isolation, their benefits as well as the clarity they offered when one could observe matters at a distance.

Woe did have people he enjoyed in life. Natalia, Soraia, Iago, Hart, Llyr, and a few select others. Yet even after repairing his tangle, he found there was very little difference to be had. Perhaps he'd been heartless all along, perhaps Llyr was right, that he only sought Emilia out of some sense of pride or ego-fulfillment. Perhaps it'd never been about the object of his obsessions at all. The obsession was within him, and only him. Perhaps others might feel that revelation would cause them to feel desolate and alone. But in it, Woe saw something that eluded him perennially. He saw freedom, independence.

He could be free of emotion, free of even the influence and corruptions of sparks. It was a seductive thought, to be sure. And one that Woe intended on following to its logical conclusion. But for now, he had company. Gloom had appeared at his door, having received the missive he sent along. At least the watchers were good for that much. Nevermind that they probably read the summons. There was nothing in it they could really use, anyway.

"Hello Woe." Gloom said, glumly, holding up a package full of cookies. Woe smiled, and took the biscuits, walking over to set them on the table on which tea had been set.

He'd brewed the tea himself, a special blend of vanilla and other spices. It was a tangy and flavorful blend, he thought Gloom would appreciate that. "Sit down, Gloom. Have some tea."

So saying, he slid into his own chair, and waited for Gloom to make himself comfortable. The tunawa chomped on one of the biscuits he'd brought, then took a few sips of the tea, his eyes lighting up ever so slightly.

"What I need, Gloom, is for you to help me to send a letter along. I can pay for the expenses of your travel." Woe folded his hands in front of him, watching as Gloom enjoyed the tea and biscuits.

Re: Alone, Finally.

Gloom didn't need much convincing or inducement in the end. He accepted the few golden nels he'd need for his travel, but otherwise was gracious enough not to hold a favor over Woe's head. Besides, Woe always rewarded his allies and friends, and they all knew that. So as Woe bid Gloom farewell, he turned his attention back to a few more letters that needed writing. He had an unfortunate clash with the Watcher's Union, in that they were showing an alarming amount of interest in Woe's old house, the one which Soraia currently owned. She wasn't willing to sell, but they insisted upon upping the offers. Woe almost wondered if she would cave, if the price was right. He reflected that everyone did have a price, and as such must have a breaking point.

So he penned a rather short letter to Tobias Lamkey. He'd met the man earlier, last Cycle. He knew the man couldn't resist an invitation to tea or dinner or just about anthing where free libations were on offer. So Woe prepared the letter, making it as brief as possible in order to pique the man's interest. The less Woe said, really, the better. But he did slip in a mention of his old house, without any reference or inclination that he'd be willing to persuade Soraia to sell.

Meanwhile, over his shoulder, Calixia brooded, lamenting his spendthrift ways. "I'm surprised you don't just send him your life's savings." She remarked sourly.

Woe had to smirk at that, shaking his head. "Don't worry Calixia. You'll be swimming in riches again in no time, it's only a matter of waiting now."

So saying, Woe sealed the letter with his scorpion signet ring. Thus the gray wax set on the letter, he brought it out to the common room of the North End Lodge, where surely there was a Watcher's Union runner waiting to take it...

Comments: It was interesting to read about how Woe plans to go about handling the matter of the Centipede (I’m curious about the reason for that name, by the way!). He gives me the impression of being quite thorough. Using agents and involving a public relations person seems like a good idea to me.

I like that you didn’t just have Woe write letters in this thread though, but also shared some of your PC’s thoughts on the matter of loneliness and emotions. Magic seems to be a big part of Woe’s life, but at the same time, he seems to be somewhat ambivalent about it. You describe your PC's thoughts and feelings very well in my opinion.

I look forward to reading more about how Woe plans on dealing with the anti-mage sentiment!

Enjoy your rewards!
