[Mistral Wood] The Starling's Nest

51st of Ymiden 721

Hiking through the Mistral woods took some nerve for Karolis. He was dressed richly, with a fancy adamantite sword tied to his belt, a well-tailored silk-lined leather jacket, with a shining crystal broach upon its lapel. Beneath the jacket, he wore a simple linen white shirt. On his legs a pair of deep brown buckskin trousers. They were all well-made, however humble they might've compared to Karolis' usual wear. Yet he didn't want to attract too much attention to himself. He was already overdressed for a stroll through the woodland paths.

The domain bag slung over his shoulder carried much of the remnants of his life within them. Trinkets, keepsakes, and necessities brought forth from his former life in Scalvoris. Back when he'd been an avriel. He knew full well that galavanting as the red-feathered avriel Kalortah would only attract undue attention, and possibly the bounty hunters who even now sought his scalp. No, he could leave no clue or indication that he was still anywhere remotely in the orbit or reach of Scalvoris. Kalortah had to disappear, and in his place, Karolis arose. The transformation gem that made it possible was tucked into an amulet in his inner pocket. There, he could change back into Karolis, should he be startled into dropping the disguise.

He kept his eyes peeled as he walked along, yet was getting weary already. How humans could abide merely walking when flying was a more sensible option... Well, obviously they had no choice in the matter.

Karolis sighed, tired already from all of his walking. He sat down to a nearby log, which was dry enough for him to safely rest upon without worrying about dirtying his clothes too much. He pulled out a whistlewood ocarina from his pocket and tested its tune against his lips. Not bad, so long as he kept it simple. Even simple combinations of notes were beyond him at this point, but it made a sweet sound besides the fact that he had little experience in its use. It was a decent accompaniment to his voice, and lyrical style.

Uninvited, a starling alighted to the ground nearby. It was then that Karolis recalled the errand that had brought him to Rharne. He was to raise the profile of bird adoration of the Glass Quarter. Yet how could he inspire anyone to love something, when he had perennially been afflicted by the love of nothing but his own self? He supposed he would have to learn to love birds, at least enough that he could convince others. Certainly, he could appreciate their aesthetically pleasing forms, the fact that they could fly, and their sweet voices. Otherwise, the avriel he had been, usually regarded them as little more than mice with wings. Pests to be driven off or scorned.

Sighing to himself, he drew a long note from his whistlewood ocarina. And so began a song, a scrapped verse of a half-completed song he'd written a long time ago. Only this was altered to be less about the 'glories' of avriel kind, and more about birds generally. Karolis had always had a penchant for improvisation and alteration of his lyrics on the fly. And so he began on that long, drawn note.

"Tunes so soft as fresh down floating on the wind,"

He whistled another tune into his ocarina, and the Starling seemed to take notice of him, hopping around and tweeting its little voice out at him, as he went along.

"Softly falling upon the ground of merry-made mankind.

The bird hopped up closely to Karolis now, sidling up to where he was seated, so it could listen to the words and tunes coming out of this stranger.

"Moons above shed light there, upon an echo of the din,"

So he finished, with a pair of notes, and then one long drawn-out refrain from the ocarina.

"To where the gentle nest of the Starling lies."

He finally conceded to the creature that was his audience, smiling down at the bird. It was then he began invoking the bird's tongue, and spoke to the Starling in its own language, perhaps to its surprise. "Hello there, friend. What news do you have of this woodland path?"

The bird stood silent for a few moments. After a long pause, it began to respond...

The starling turned its head a moment and then began singing its story for Karolis. He sang that he was just a lonely starling, hasn't found its mate yet, and that it was just out of its parents' nest. It was hungry as well, and had only come to the clearing they were within to look for food when it happened upon his song. The starling was very complimentary to Karolis' voice, which the man enjoyed hearing.

"I have more songs if you're interested in hearing them. I sing often when at home, and even out among the crowds of people..." Karolis said in bird tongue to the creature. He smiled down at it, and it hopped onto his hand. Its claws and feet felt cold to the touch but strangely reassuring. Karolis wondered if he could make a pet of this dear bird.

"If you come with me, I can offer protection of a sort, and food, and a place to sing safely. You can even find a mate, provided you return to our nest with them..."

The bird looked up at the trees, to stare at the owl Glorius that had followed Karolis from afar. Karolis looked up from the blue owl to the starling, and shook his head, "Don't worry. He's no threat to you, little one. I command Glorius, and so long as he follows my commands, he will keep watch over and protect you. But only if you wish to come with me."

Having said this to the bird, the starling tilted its head, seeming to consider. After a moment or two in thought, the little bird began singing again, this time more excitedly. And Karolis smiled. "Yes I have some seed among my rations. Here." He pulled out a handful from his domain bag, and let the little bird eat the smaller seeds up. He popped the dried pumpkin seeds that were there in his own mouth, being a bit too big for the Starling to swallow.

With that deal settled, Karolis got up on his feet, having rested well enough, and began on the long path toward Rharne. He'd only left Mistral Village behind him a half-day ago, and so it would be almost another twelve breaks before he arrived at the Dust Quarter at his estimate. The bird alighted to his shoulder, and sang for all the forest to hear, boasting that he had a man watching out for him and feeding him, and a mighty Tarouz owl. And that if there were any female starlings who wanted in on the deal, he was single and ready to mingle.

Karolis couldn't help but smile at the little creature's bravado. Still, as presumptuous as the bird was, he would honor his deal to protect the little one, as best he could. He sent a silent message to Glorius, to warn him to fend off any attacking predators that tried to assault his new, little friend. Glorius tilted his head by way of acknowledgment, and flew overhead, keeping watch over the Tarouz and his little pet.

And so the two walked the rest of the way to Rharne. The starling, unfortunately for Karolis' jacket, relieved itself there. It was said that bird stoor on one's head or shoulder was a mark of good luck. Karolis never understood that superstition, and so resolved as soon as he arrived in Rharne and made accommodation, to invest in a leather shoulder strap precisely for the purpose of covering his clothing, so it wouldn't be sullied by whatever bird's waste fell upon it.

In a break or two, they arrived upon the Dust Quarter. Karolis put on his most fierce aspect as he strode through the streets, not making eye contact with any of the rougher individuals who met his gaze. Within the break, he arrived at Pilgrim's Ascent and began walking up the stairs to reach his destination. He had a good experience at the Flying Moon and wished to revisit that part of the city anyway, given the remit offered by Delroth to spread bird adoration among the Glass Quarter. It made perfect sense to him to start there, and make it his base of operations, so to speak.

He made it to the Flying Moon just as it was beginning to get dark out. He entered the common room to the noise of boisterous merry-making and the smell of cooking food. His bird companion, the starling, chirped its interest in where he was going and wondered if it might be a better idea to separate and hang around outside the building. But Karolis whispered to the bird, "No little bird. Stay with me. I'll tell them you're my companion."

So saying, he arranged for a table, and while the Starling on his shoulder raised a few eyebrows, nobody challenged him on the assertion that it was his pet/companion. So they enjoyed a nice dinner together, and Karolis had a glass of fine Vithella red.

Comments: I agree. Karolis was definitely overdressed. I really enjoyed the description of his outfit though, and what more, I was amused by the vain Tarouz with his fine clothes strolling through the wilderness!

His irritation at having to walk was obvious. Hopefully, he'll eventually be able to turn back into a noble Avriel!

I liked the song - I'm always impressed by the fact that you write your PC's songs yourself - and I thought that the interaction with the starling was well-written.

I was a bit surprised when the starling started to answer Karolis, I have to admit. Being able to understand birds is a very useful ability though!

It seems to me as if he's already learning to love birds, even if his new companion relieved himself on his jacket (That was an amusing scene!).

I'm curious about how exactly Karolis/Kalortah plans on raising the profile of bird adoration of the Glass Quarter, and I wish him good luck with his errand.

Enjoy your rewards!
