Later on, Vega would admit to Darius that she wasn't completely sure that she'd helped Ari'sora by de-Dweebing her. The ability she had used on her gave the woman a new start but Vega was more than a little concerned that the self-destructive victim complex which Vega had seen was not because of the trauma Ari'sora had experienced, but simply part of her nature. If that was the case, of course, it was entirely possible that this had been what attracted abusive people to her. Not that it in any way justified the actions of those who had harmed her, but that thought still made Vega want to shake her.

"There's nothin' wrong with your name," Vega said, speaking more firmly than Darius did. "But no one said there was, an' that's really not the point." She was, as always, uncompromising and unwilling to sugar coat. "You chose to do this. You chose to have a new face, an' to lose your memories. In what corner of the world does it make sense to do that an' then use your old name while you're tryin' to work out who you are?" It had been more than five and a half seconds since she used the ability on her, so Vega figured the woman might have thought about this by now. "You're from Scalvoris. People here know you, an' know of you. Since that's more than a possibility, it's a likelihood, then keepin' your name makes no sense for a few reasons. First, you're draggin' your old identity out, as a winged person called Ari'sora isn't likely to be like a human called Jim, is it? Especially not on an island this small." She frowned, looking and sounding irritated. "If you want to get a firm grasp on who you are now, then do that, an' recognise that you're dredging up who you were every time you introduce yourself." She gestured. "An' for those people who do know you, if you say who you are, but look different to the person they know, that's goin' to cause all sorts of questions an' confusion."

Shaking her head, Vega looked at Ari'sora and then at Isra and Darius, then she turned her gaze back to the half-avriel. "I don't know you. You came to me, an' you asked me for help. An' I was an' am happy to give it. But you need to stop this nonsense before it starts again," she said. Vega looked at Ari'sora, but gestured to Isra and then - at the appropriate moment, Darius. "You're not helpless. Get off your ass an' get out in the world. Stop hidin' an' waitin' for other people to do things for you. Isra has said, clearly, that you don't need no more treatment an' Darius has told you that you can't stay here. If you want to discover who you are, then jus' get out there an' live." She truly believed that someone needed to talk straight and clear to this woman because, in Vega's mind, it needed saying. "You've got a family, Isra's written to them. Either go back to them or don't, that don't matter. They've only got the power to shape who you are if you let them. An' since right now you know them as much as you know me, that means that anyone here, anyone could do that - could shape you with expectations - because you let them. That's up to you. But stop sittin' meekly in a corner an' listenin' to people reel off lists of uses for herbs. It's not doin' anythin'. Get out an' do stuff. Stop bein' a victim, because you're not any more - an' start bein' a person. Learn medicine by treatin' people who are injured. Travel the world. Learn to juggle. I don't know." She smiled slightly. "But I do know that 'I don't want to be known, but I'm stayin' close enough to home that I could throw a stone through the window and usin' my old name' is stupid. Stop bein' stupid." It was so glaringly obvious to Vega that she would, quite happily, have bet that no individual in receipt of all their faculties would ever do otherwise. It seemed she was wrong.

"No one has the answers for what you should do other than you. But you need to get out there an' find them." Vega's eyes swirled in a variety of colours. "I know that I sound harsh to you, but I'm right worried that you're jus' automatically fallin' into old behaviours. I changed your face for you an' your memories, but you don't even think to sort out your name, because no one told you to? You will decide who you are now, an' no one else can. If you want to shed your old life, then do it. You've said you want to, an' then I've given you the chance to. Now take that chance, an' stop flaffin' around here waitin' for somethin' to happen. Isra's done her bit, I've done my bit - now, you need to do yours an' jus' get on."

She stopped then and glanced at Darius and Isra. Isra, who had been on the receiving end of Vega's caustic tongue simply raised an eyebrow, and waited to hear what Ari'sora had to say. Tellingly, Isra did not argue, not with either Vega or Darius. Instead, she waited to hear if Ari'sora actually heard what they were saying to her. Glancing at the healer who knew that half-avriel in front of her better than anyone else here, Vega considered that Isra seemed to be watching Ari with the same concerns that Vega herself was feeling.

Darius was vague in his answer when Ari'sora asked if he knew her, and Ari'sora appreciated that. She hoped that it meant that he did not know her well. At first, Darius seemed to think that she was in need of more treatment, and he suggested the Order clinics in Sclavoris Town, and Egilrun, but Isra told him that she wasn't in need of any more treatment before she herself could. She was disappointed that he wasn't going to allow her to stay...right up until he mentioned that it was likely that some of the residents of the settlement had known her "before." That was something that she had not considered, and she strongly believed that it would be best if she avoided people from her old life until she was well established in her new one, and she had a firm grasp of who she was now.

He also suggested that she go by a different name if she wanted to shed the past. It was something she had considered, of course. But by the time she had thought of it, a few trials had past, and the healers she had been working with had been calling her Ari'sora during that time. It felt weird to ask them to call her something else at that point, so she had said nothing. Going forward, though...that was different. Introducing herself by a different name from the start would be different than asking people who knew her as one thing to call her something else entirely. In some ways, it felt like a lie, and Ari'sora didn't like that. Not one bit. On the other hand...was it really a lie? Ari'sora was the person she had been...before. She was someone new now. And it could be said that that new person deserved a new name. One that was hers alone.

Her mind turned to the problem of where she wanted to go from here. She still wanted to remain in Scalvoris. Even though she wanted time to learn who she was now before being faced with people that she knew well "before," that didn't mean that she never wanted to see them again. And it would be harder for her to do so if she left Scalvoris. Then there were the more practical issues as well. Other lands might well present a language barrier. Not to mention the fact that since she wasn't going to contact her family right now, she didn't have the funds to get by until she could establish a new life in a distant land. She had no idea if her family was well off or not, but for the moment, all she owned was what she was wearing now, the clothes she had brought with her, and the amulet that Isra had given her. On the other hand...no one would know her if she did travel away from Scalvoris. And that was an appealing thought.

Vega spoke, distracting her from her thoughts. The red haired woman clearly thought that it was stupid of her to keep her old name, and she said as much. Her reasons were both the same, and different than the one that Darius had offered. And she did have a point. Ari'sora thought of herself as a person more than she thought of herself as being half Avriel, half Sev'ryn...or anything else for that matter. So it honestly hadn't occurred to her that there might not be anyone else out there with her name. But half Avriel weren't exactly common in Scalvoris...or anywhere else for that matter.

Vega continued to speak, and Ari'sora listened carefully to what the woman said. Parts of what the woman said made a great deal of sense to her, and parts did not. The part about her not being helpless, for example. That made a great deal of sense to her. She knew that she wasn't helpless. But she didn't think that she had been hiding, though. She had been helping the healers while repairs were made to the ship. Earning her keep while waiting to see if she would be allowed to stay here or not. Now that she knew the answer, she would move on. Likewise, she didn't agree that learning about the uses of various herbs was useless. Not when she was more interested in making herbal remedies and finding out if the herbs she had been learning about had any use in alchemy than she did in treating patients directly.

Still, the most important part of what Vega had said seemed to be that she needed to go out and live her life. And that was something that she agreed with wholeheartedly.

"You've given me a lot to think about. Thank you for that." Ari'sora told Vega quietly.

She wasn't certain what to think of some of what had been said, but she did know that she would spend a lot of time thinking about it.

"I think I'd like to go to Scalvoris Town, please." she told Vega after a short while.

The trip there would give her much needed time to think. She needed to decide what she wanted to do now, and for that, she needed time. Hopefully by the time she got to Scalvoris Town, she would have an idea of where to go from there.

"I'll use the time it takes to get there to come up with a new name for myself because I do agree with you that it is a good idea." she told both Vega and Darius.

And she knew that it would take a while to find a name that she wanted to use. It was a big decision, choosing a name that suited her, and she wanted one that she wouldn't decide that she didn't like later, or one that wouldn't suit her.

Darius felt a temptation to wince as Vega spoke, though he managed to resist it. He agreed with the redhead's message, but her delivery was rather blunt, and he worried that it might not have the desired effect.

In time, as he came to know Vega better, he would realise that what she was doing in that moment was "very Vega".

And she was right. Ari'sora did choose to leave her past behind her, and that included her name. And staying on Faldrass would not help her to start afresh.

Ari'sora finding a new name and a new home was in her best interests, and those of Hopetoun.

When the half-avriel named his hometown as her preferred destination, Darius nodded.

"Scalv-Town is two trials' sail from here," he said, before offering Ari'sora a gentle smile. "Plenty of time to decide on a new name."

Darius stood then, and turned to Vega, before casting a fleeting glance out to the sky beyond so that he could locate the sun and get a sense of the time of trial.

"The next high tide will be after dark, but the one after that will be in the early breaks of the morning. The ship will need to be ready to leave by then."

He shifted to face Isra next.

"Please ensure our guest," he said, taking special care not to refer to Ari'sora by name, "has all of her possessions and anything else she might need. A blanket, some food, water, and I will bring you some nels to give to her so that she can get herself a hot meal and a roof over her head for her first couple of nights in Scalv-Town. Then we can make arrangements for you to stay here and assist the settlement."

Ari'sora might not be staying in Hopetoun, but Darius would not have it known that the settlement was not hospitable to vistors.

And then he turned back to the half-avriel, pausing briefly before speaking once again in a gentle tone.

"I hope you find a new name and a new future," he offered sincerely, "and that you find rest during your last night here. Before you board the ship, collect some sand from Faldrass as a memento of your time here. It will stay warm, even in the coldest weather."

With that, Darius turned to leave the tent, making eye contact with Vega and inviting her to join him. When the redhead stepped outside once more, he spoke again, his voice quiet.

"We've done all we can for her," he acknowledged with a shrug. "You've done more than most. For that, I am grateful, and I hope she is too. The rest is up to her."

Notes:

I really enjoyed pieces of this thread, especially the beginning where Vega/Darius are explaining what has occurred in Hopetoun in the previous trials and where there minds are. Darius jumps back into the fray, getting back to work and dealing with an especially delicate situation. Vega's exchange with Astra made me giggle. It's easy to forget that for the people that were pulled into the War, there's a reentry period. Both Darius and Vega handled that particularly well. I especially enjoyed seeing it through Vega's eyes as a person that wasn't involved, but who worked and helped Hopetoun through the oddities of that time period, and as the wife of one that was pulled away. It's a unique perspective and I appreciate the time you took to write it.

Both Darius and Vega are beautifully written in the thread. Their individual personalities come shining through in the way they both deal with the situation and it felt very true to who they are. Ari felt very off-balance, but that's to be expected with what happened. I'd like to see a few more differences between the old Ari and who she now is, as this version seems to be very similar, or at least is written that way.

I felt the emotions being written, and that's a good, good thing. I felt Vega's frustration. I felt Darius' pensiveness. These things had weight and only added to the depth of the story being told by those two characters. Ari felt detached, and I'm not sure if that was an active writing choice by design or something that resulted from the comments I will have for Ari below.

Ari’sora – There are some issues that I feel need to be addressed in the spirit of constructive advice moving forward.

Knowledge:

It is my opinion that one specific requested knowledge contained more than one knowledge.

“Medicine; Herbal Remedies: an herbal salve is an oil-based medicine that consists of a carrier oil that is infused with herbs, resins or other medicinal compounds and wax that is used to thicken it for easier use. Beeswax is the type of wax that is most commonly used for this, but other types can be used as well. Salves can hold their shape outside of the container they are stored in but may “melt” on contact with body heat.”

This is the following knowledge wrapped into one:

- An herbal salve is an oil-based medicine that consists of a carrier oil that is infused with herbs, resins or other medicinal compounds and wax that is used to thicken it for easier use.
- Beeswax is the type of wax that is most used for herbal salves, but other types can be used as well.
- Salves can hold their shape outside of the container they are stored in but may “melt” on contact with body heat.

Unfortunately, I cannot award you this knowledge as is. You can submit a replacement from the pieces I broke out or a new one of your choosing.

Your first post in this collaboration was a healer reciting a lot of information to Ari’sora based on very basic questions. In terms of story, it made little sense. All nine knowledges you requested were from the first post you did. In my opinion, Ari would have an extremely hard time retaining all the information that was given to her in the short period of time. She wasn’t writing anything down. How much of this information, realistically, did she learn? Please consider this in the future. I decided only to mention it at this time.

Story: Ari, I must be honest here – I feel like there were two different stories going on. There was the Ari story you started with an almost solo-length reply and the collaborative one that Darius/Vega were trying to get Ari involved in. Additionally, your choices of knowledge made me feel like you missed the point of the thread. As a reader, there was the Ari solo at the beginning with all the medicine stuff, and then the rest of the thread which the medicine stuff didn’t have anything to do with. It was very disorienting. Darius and Vega, for example, describe scenes of what they were doing before the three of you met up, but both those stories felt organic and natural, flowing into the rest of the thread.

In the future, I would encourage you to think of your co-collaborators when you are sharing a story. This story had a purpose, and it wasn’t so Ari could get a lot of medical knowledge. It was to push Ari’s story forward, and Darius/Vega were there to help that.

That being said, good job all on the thread! Enjoy your rewards!
