• Solo • [Raelia] Shook

The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

[Raelia] Shook

10 Ymiden 721 - Yggdrasil Citadel
Nestled within one of the many aromatic storerooms of the Healing’s Hall, Visna was rhythmically going through the motions of cutting up clean linen cloth for fresh bandages. It was a mindless task of repetition: layering the last strip over the cloth long enough to match its measurement and then cutting - over and over ad nauseum.

Although she, admittedly, would have preferred a more challenging task, she knew it was a necessary one as bandages were always in need. And, unlike the medicinal plants they grew within the neighbouring greenhouses and the various other medicinal items that they could source from nature, bandages could not be harvested. They had to be made.

She hummed without much thought to the tune, just something simple that matched the motions she made, and let her mind slip into a near trance-like state. Times like these when her focus was not fully needed, she found, were good for practicing how to clear and calm the mind. Going through meditative exercises in calm periods were easy but still beneficial: if one could not calm the mind in times of quiet, how could one ever do so in times of chaos?

Measure, cut, stack. Measure, cut, stack. Her mind drifted peacefully, allowing her mind’s eye to stir, tempting it to open. She focused on the scents that filled the room: the cedar from the pallets and store boxes nearby, the garlic braids that were hung at intervals, clove. However, Visna was not looking to slip into a deep meditative state, so she simply remained on this precipice and gently drew her mind back to her present task once it was time to set the bandages into a cedar container to be stored for future use.

She stacked this container on top of the other two she had filled and lifted them up as one, heading out and into a brightly lit hallway. The contrast between the two areas made her pause just long enough for her eyes to make the quick adjustment and then she proceeded onwards towards the nearest surgery room.

Peeking inside before she entered so as to ensure it wasn’t in use, she saw to putting the boxes of bandages in their respectful places, Aesir vestments sweeping against the floor and her slippers. The mundane monotony of her previous task had dulled her thoughts, leaving her feeling detached and nebulous, but this change in scenery and the sudden sharpness of her surroundings - the tangy remnants of citrus and burn of alcohol and stark, sterile nature of the room - seemed to jolt her back into herself. It was then and there she decided she did not need to stick to the same drudgery she had engaged in before; she could be just as useful elsewhere.

And so she made her exit and strode briskly in the direction of the nearest greenhouse.

But she would not make it to her destination, for halfway there a tremor seized the floor beneath her feet. It was not enough to cause her to lose her footing, but it was enough to disarm the young Namdalen Druid. She shot a hand out to the nearest wall to steady herself, brow knitting in profound confusion. A cacophony of shattering glass and a variety of thuds followed as items in nearby offices and rooms were shaken free from their perches only to fall victim to gravity. Shouts and yelps rose soon after - calls to fellows to ensure others safety, blurted cries of confusion and wonderment. Then another tremor struck, her surroundings trembling for what Visna felt was a full bit, leaving her equally befuddled by the experience.

Re: [Raelia] Shook

Earthquakes were not common in Melrath; one had happened in previous arcs down in the west at Noatun, but few based in Raelia would have experienced the phenomenon. It was an unnerving experience, strange and surreal.

Visna’s practical mind tried to come to some conclusion: had something hit the Citadel? It would have had to be something of substantial size to have caused such a shake as she had felt - wouldn’t she have heard a crash of some sort? Could it have been a gale? She knew strong winds could fell trees but the day had been calm and humid, almost comatose when she had arrived earlier.

She ventured forward, rounding a bend and then pressed through a door that led her into the large, spacious and brightly lit general treatment area of the hospital. Her dark eyes ignored the bewildered Druids and townsfolk near her and sought the large painted glass windows that made up one of the outer walls, seeking some sort of explanation. The trees, bushes and vines that stood beyond were still - nothing looked amiss or windblown and certainly nothing appeared toppled over. The day remained as sedate as before.

Huffing out a breath she hadn’t realised she held, she finally jerked back into the present as a nearby Druid touched her shoulder, her eyes and attention jerking roughly in that direction.

The other Druid swiftly withdrew her hand in equal alarm and apologised profusely as much with her gestures as her words, “I am so sorry to startle you, my dear, I just wanted to check you were ok. You looked lost to the spirits.”

Visna composed herself, relaxing the tension that had built in her body and placed a hand on her heart, offering a less empathetic but still genuine apology, “I too am sorry; I didn’t mean to be so jumpy. I-” her mind stuttered, wanting to know, to understand, it whirled in all different directions and her eyes wandered with it, before, at last, she took another steadying breath as she acknowledged the other woman, “I am fine, just confused.

“We all are,” confessed the other woman, her eyes sweeping the room before returning to the young Monk before her, "but we can still do our jobs. Here," she motioned to some items that had been knocked from a nearby table, "help tidy up and make sure the area is safe. Others will see to those in our care."

Visna's lips drew tight, wanting desperately to investigate what just occurred yet reluctantly did as requested. Bending, she began picking up bits of broken clay jars and glass bottles, careful not to cut herself in the process. She scooped up pastes and globs of mashed herbs and found something to dab up liquid spills. It was as she was sweeping around twenty-five bits later that Visna’s attention was snagged by figures moving beyond the window. Rushing, they looked to be rushing. She hastily set the broom aside, took up the front of her robes and hurried out the hospital, angling for the main doors, driven by her curiosity. They swung open before she even reached them, giving her a start.

A man burst forward, eyes wide, "Help, we need help! Druids - the docks! Anyone!"

Without a moments hesitation, Visna brushed past the man and began the trek to Draugen Bay.

Ignoring the stark change from the cool interior of the Citadel to the heavy, humid heat of the Ymiden day, Visna pressed on, hurrying along Sunna Way and through the Evening Gate. Her dark eyes flitted over the bodies that were now scurrying around, frantic as ants, as she swept out to the main thoroughfare of the southwest section of Vaettir Hol, ears picking up only snatches of what was said. Words were helter-skelter, tone elevated from panic and confusion. Guards - a mix of Ydalir and Ragnari - were moving in waves yet seemed to bring no comfort to the distressed masses. The air felt electric.

She continued onward at a brisk pace, rounding the imposing main gates of the blue city, and then veered northward towards the sea. The energy around her seemed to change as she progressed, transforming from panic to desperation, fear to grief. It took another twenty bits at a brisk pace for her short legs to bring her upon the wreckage of the bay, only mild at first yet increasing in severity as she cast her eyes eastward.

A man caught her attention, swaying unsteadily, and moaning something intelligible, and she headed towards him. “Easy, easy..” she offered, voice more clipped than comforting, “let’s have you take a seat.” Her hands found his side and shoulder as she worked to steer him towards some broken debris. She kicked at a broken barrel and it shifted enough to offer a place for the man to sit that wasn’t the wet sand they now trode on.

He resisted momentarily, then dropped like a sack of rice, catching the young Druid off guard. He let out a long, thin noise and then prattled on, repeating over and over again as he rocked, staring out blankly towards the sea.

Not again. Not again. Not again..

Visna’s eyes swept over him, searching for any signs of injury and found none. Her dark eyes fixed on his rheumy ones and she manoeuvred herself in front of him so they were looking directly at one another. More out of curiosity than concern, she asked, “Not again? What has happened again?

For a long while the man seemed to look through her and it took every last bit of resolve for the young woman to remain patient.

What has happ-

“The wave!” he moaned out as if in agony, interrupting her.

In a flash, his focus fixed on her and his words flew out at an alarming pace, “The land shook, the sea swallowed itself and then spilled back out in one great, angry wave! Took out everything! Everything!” And just as quickly as the mania had appeared, it receded, his focus fading, eyes growing distant as he rocked once more. “Again, again, again..

Visna, crouched now, tried to hide her confusion and wracked her brain, trying to figure any of this out. She recalled Ydalir scouts being offered refuge within her familial home in the mountains with a similar faraway look. Shaken, lost, unable to make heads or tails of things. Her parents had said they were shocked. She hadn’t understood it then and she still didn’t understand it now but she did know she would make little headway if she continued to prod this man for answers while he was in this state. Without any hesitation, she undid the rope belt at her waist and shrugged the Aesir robe off her shoulders, leaving her in just her leggings and a light underchemise. She shook it out and laid it about the man’s shoulders.

Calm now,” she offered as she drew the material - warm from her own body heat - tight around his drooped shoulders and firmly to his chest, holding it there only long enough to help him clutch the ends closed with one of his own fists.

He responded slowly, eyes finding her.

Noatun.

Comments: I’m always happy to read a new PC’s threads and discover a writer that I’m not familiar with yet. I have to admit, I really enjoyed reading his solo. It was beautifully written. Your posts contained just the right amount of detail in my opinion, and your post template made them very easy to read.

I like that you started the thread by Visna going about her job.

Cutting up cloth for bandages doesn’t sound like a particularly exciting activity – I agree with Visna in that regard – but those scenes in the Healing’s Hall allowed your readers to get to know your PC better and learn what she normally does. I appreciate that, especially when it comes to a PC that I don’t know yet.

The floor beneath Visna’s feet shaking at the end of the first post provided some excitement. You described the reactions of Visna and the people around her well in my opinion!

The scene with the shocked man in the last post was especially dramatic. I like that you ended the thread with a bit of a cliffhanger. It makes me want to know what happens next.

I hope there’ll be a sequel!

You asked for constructive feedback. I’m not sure if there is anything I can criticize – it looks as if you’ve even done some research on Melrath. As it seems as if this thread is related to a calendar event, it could have helped to mention that in the review request though.

Enjoy your rewards!
