Wylem appeared confused at first, looking at the extended hand and then up to the one who offered it but Visna remained steadfast. He took it in time and the small Druid had to take a couple steps back to help hoist the bigger man to his feet. She paused and waited for him to get his bearings once he was upright and rearranged the blanket on his shoulders, her movements once more perfunctory. She helped him tuck the water flask into the crook of his arm and then moved a small hand to the middle of his back, urging him forward. He moved unsteadily and Visna made sure to keep her own stride slow to keep in step with his own.
She had noticed two Druids towards the southwest earlier and, when her dark eyes sought them out now, she saw more had joined them along with what looked to be injured members of the public. Forms sat huddled, covered in the same coloured coarse wool blanket that hung around her current charge’s shoulders, as Druids, easily identified by their distinct Aesir robes, moved about, tending to those in need. It was a welcomed sight for the young Monk who had found herself out of her depth.
“Come,” she urged Wylem, her eyes seeking his so he might witness the motion of her head to indicate the group they would head towards. His bloodshot eyes remained wide and wild as they darted between her own and the group, but she saw - with great relief - he appeared to understand, giving a bob of his own head before his steps moved in that direction of his own volition. Visna’s hand remained near his back for support in case he needed it, vaguely aware that the warmth it provided through the blanket could also be comforting.
As they approached, another Druid glanced up from the woman she was tending to and, upon noticing them, straightened to her full height and beckoned them forward.
“Come, come,” came her warm words. Visna noticed the movement of the other Druid’s pale eyes as she assessed the man and then watched as, with a gentle flourish of her hand, the more senior Druid ushered him to an empty spot of stable ground, slightly away from the other injured. “Settle him in over there. A warm drink will come for him soon.”
Visna’s attention returned to Wylem as she relayed this to him, her words clear but lacking the warmth they held earlier, “Come, there is a spot for you over here.” Applying a bit of pressure to Wylem’s back, she gently directed him to the arranged spot and helped him lower himself until he was seated, taking the water flask from him as she did so. She checked the blanket that was still around his shoulders and straightened it, tugging the ends out from under him to make him more comfortable, and then offered the flask back. He took it in his hands and rested it on his lap, his face back to be blank and pale.
With a sigh, Visna dropped into a crouch before the older man, her eyes once more assessing him. Her attention turned to her surroundings briefly, gaze sweeping the area. It had been recently cleared of debris and, judging by the mismatched and still damp boards that created much of the flooring people rested on, a level surface assembled. Her concentration broke when the Druid from earlier approached.
“What are his ailments? He looks to be in shock.”
Visn looked up to the other Druid and confirmed this with a nod. “He’s confused, too. Unsteady. Prone to bouts of repetition and mutterings interspersed by moments of intense clarity. As you can see, he also lapses into the state he is now - blank and barely responsive.” Her eyes shifted between the two, “I’ve tried to keep him warm and calm and gave him water, but I admittedly am unsure how else to proceed.”
The other Druid was about to speak when an unfamiliar and masculine voice cut through the air.
“Wylem?”
