She watched him. Maybe he knew that, or didn’t, but very often her eyes followed him as he simply went about mundane matters. Balthazar may have been the one with Vri-granted memory, but when it came to him, Elisabeth remembered everything. Every trial she learned something new as they worked their way through life.

As she knew him, the young mage understood that he was learning about her too. As life kept throwing them new and ‘interesting’ challenges, they adapted. She had supported his decision about the Elements and Officer’s Training despite knowing that it would separate them for periods of time. She supported him no matter what he did because she loved him. It didn’t keep her from seeing the truth of who he was, although some would disagree. For everything that had happened to him, he was still moving forward, trying to help people and solve mysteries.

Elisabeth appreciated, more than ever, the fact that they could speak in private with one another again. Not being able to do so had affected their relationship greatly and in truth, she felt, had hampered his ability to deal with what had happened. Taking away an avenue of support for him was something she hadn’t agreed with, having told the therapist as much, but a small silver lining of the situation was that she would never take the ability to talk to Balthazar alone for granted again.

She listened as he spoke, just letting him talk. They were still in the process of catching up on everything they had wanted to say during the past season. All the conversations they had missed. Elisabeth had missed them so very much, but that freedom came with a cost. Again.

“I wish that too, love. I do.” Her voice was understanding, soft. “The circumstances weren’t ideal. There are a lot of things I wish would have happened differently, but you are right – that’s life. We will deal with it.”

His nudge and grin caused her to smile, as they always did. Both were still concerned with her missing memories but as well, both realized there was nothing to be done about retrieving them. Either they would come back, or they wouldn’t.

As he took her hand, she gently squeezed his, watching him as he responded to her gentle tease. “Well, maybe I’ll try my hand at some more poetry. I quite enjoyed yours…” It was then that he turned away and started rummaging through his bag, bringing out a crystal and showing it to her.

As he explained where it had come from and what it was, she smiled, taking it as he offered it to her, gazing upon it. “It’s beautiful.” He admitted that he wanted to keep it, and the reason why made her smile brightly, causing the young woman to turn and place a soft kiss on his lip, whispering gently. “I’ll be alright. You'll know if I'm not...and I'll know that you are on your way to me." Now that he was free to leave the island, she was reassured that if his ring told him she was in trouble, he'd find a way to her, just as she would always find him if her silver band told her of the need.

"You know I don’t want you to go and I’m not going to profess otherwise. But I know that you need to go.” Reaching up, Elisabeth gently caressed his cheek, taking a deep breath. “I’ll be right here, waiting for you to come home.”

Smiling gently at him, the young woman gestured over at the chair, where the now upside-down, snoring Storm was…well…snoring. “Besides, I have Storm to protect me. I don’t see how that could possibly go wrong…” Grinning gently, Elisabeth took a deep breath, trying to mask a bit of the pain with humor.

Sometimes it worked. Sometimes…not so much.

16 Ymiden 721
The strangest and most telling sign of what the Element's supervision had done to Balthazar was that when Elisabeth went to kiss him after he presented her with the gift Saoire had given him, he backed away. For a few trills he forgot he was not being watched and he did not want to show such affection. His hands shot out to grab Elisabeth's arm's and stop her where she was but he was nervous and instead his hands caught the sides of her waist. It stopped her all the same but it was much more alluring than he meant it to be. Part of him enjoyed it. Feeling the shape of her hips against his hands for a moment certainly tempted him to forget what they were talking about, but all his usual guards were still up. There was still that momentary fear he was being watched. The fear passed and he kissed her, but the hesitation was impossible to hide.

"You will know I want to be, but I will not always be able to come immediately." Balthazar said quietly as Elisabeth stroked his cheek. He thought of times like when Tio took him or when he was hunting Gaston. He couldn't have dropped either of those without a great cost but he the moment they were resolved he would have been at her side again... only he hadn't known her then. He wished he had. He squeezed her waist where he held her a little bit as his eyes drifted back from the floor to Elisabeth's. He didn't like leaving because it separated him from her, but the distance from Haven and the work felt good. Leadership, at least the sort of leadership Haven needed, was a task for a more peaceful mind. If Balthazar wanted to lead something well, he should have lead raiders. "I will come back. Always."

His hands slipped slightly around her waist to her lower back and he considered pulling her closer before moving his hands back to her waist. "Haven is better off with me solving crimes than leading." Balthazar said, even if he didn't believe it. "Just don't burn anything down while I'm away." He kissed her forehead and looked towards Storm, the cat who everyone seemed to love. Well, Ronan didn't seem overly fond but that was only because he seemed to sneeze more with Storm around, though he'd never admit it. Elisabeth said Storm would protect her and Balthazar gave a soft laugh. He flicked Elisabeth's forehead, "Don't say that, you're inviting trouble."

Mutations

  • Once Paradigm Is Removed: He glows faintly, his skin is warm and sometimes hot to the touch, and when he gets angry sparks literally fly off him. He's a the middle of a field of static electricity so every once in a while when you touch him, you get shocked. Fire leans towards Balthazar and droplets of water seem magnetically attracted to him. He has a series of cracks on his right pectoral that glow of soft emerald. His eyes and the cracks reaching down to his cheeks glow a dark blue. The etheric cracks spiderwebbing up his arms glow orange.

Scars

  • Oops, Oops, Ouch: Balthazar Black has twenty scars across his back from a lashing as well as scars on his hands and arms from jagged rocks in Faldrass. There are two scars on the sides of his abdomen from being stabbed and a slash across his back which blends in with the whip scars.

The body fumbling was…surprising. Caught off guard, sapphire eyes searched his face, trying to sort out what exactly was wrong. It took a few trills before she figured it out, concern crossing her features and gently reaching out to touch his arms. “It’s just us, love.” Of course, by the time she said it, he had come to the same realization, but she needed him to know that she understood. As Balthazar kissed her, she let her lips linger against his a moment longer. It was hard to forget what they had been through, and how it affected each. Things were better, slowly progressing back to something resembling normal, but certain side-effects were harder to combat than others.

He said what they both knew – sometimes, despite need, they wouldn’t be able to get to each other. It had already happened with her wayward adventure to Scalvoristown. Balthazar had told her upon her return that his ring had indicated to him issues while she had been gone, yet she could remember nothing. What she did know, without absolute certainty, is that he would get to her as soon as he could. Gazing softly at him, Elisabeth replied with a smile. “I know. And yes, I know you will always come back. I’ve never doubted that, or you.”

Laying her hands gently on his arms, it felt good having him hold her again, even if it was lightly. He had always teased her about her need for physical closeness, but it was something she had always thought important, even if it did earn her a fair amount of good-natured grief.

Sighing softly at his comment, Elisabeth simply shook her head. “Haven is lucky to have you, Balthazar Black. In what capacity, doesn’t really matter. But more importantly, I’m lucky to have you. Have I ever told you that?” To be fair, she tended to tell him a lot of things…but had she ever told him how grateful she felt? “Every trial I wake up, and the first thing through my mind is gratitude for you. Every. Trial.” Gently placing her hands on his chest, she poked him a bit to emphasis the last two words.

The kiss to her forehead caused her eyes to flutter closed briefly, simply wishing to enjoy the moment for what it was. That moment was followed up by a surprise flick the forehead, causing the young woman to laugh and swat his hand away. “I’m pretty sure it doesn’t need an invitation. It seems to come regardless if we want it to or not.”

Poking him in the stomach gently, Elisabeth grinned. It was a interesting life for sure.

Notes: Well, it started out a bit rocky, with Balthazar in a terrible mood, which I suppose I can see his angle. I'm glad he changed his tune though, through the next few posts. Elisabeth really is a persuasive individual, and it shows no better than in her ability to get through to a hard-headed Balthazar, even when he's in a mood.

The advice Balthazar, that aside, was very good. Giving her some parting advice in the way the Research hub would be run and dealt with.

Otherwise, I found this thread was a touching memorandum on their relationship the rest of the way throughout, with them saying their goodbyes. When you're saying goodbye to a soldier, as Elisabeth stated, it's never a guarantee that they'll see each other again. She's wise not to take anything for granted, but enjoy the moment.

Balthazar was his usual cool self about it all, dealing with leaving as best he can. I hope he benefits from Officer training, and comes out of it even more experienced and better than he was before. I'm sure he'll repair his slightly-tarnished reputation with just a little bit of elbow grease and earnest effort.

Great writing both of you.
