After Grape Jelly.
Vhalar 15, Arc 721
“Your Grace, the trainees from Cally’s have just arrived”, Korim, Smooglenuff Manor’s half biqaj butler, announced just as Devin checked the dining room where their meeting would start one last time. When he heard that, the young man turned around and smiled. He was glad to finally be able to start working on his vineyard project, and he really liked being called “Your Grace” and having his own butler. Unless only one third of Korim actually belonged to him because there were three barons? He briefly wondered which third of Korim would be his in that case before he decided to focus on what really mattered.
“Thank you, Korim”, he said with a radiant smile. “Let’s go and welcome them”, he continued and followed the slightly older man to the entrance hall where a group of people were being attended to by two servants that took their cloaks and coats and carried their suitcases into the guestrooms – because the trainees would be staying for a while!
After Mrs. Adams, the head cook and he had finished preparing the meal, Devin had changed into a new outfit. Since the trainees would help them with the vineyard project (and learn how to make wine in the process), Devin had decided to feed them food with grapes, use dishes with pictures of grapes on them and wear a matching outfit in order to inspire them. Unfortunately, he hadn’t found any clothes with grapes on them, but he wore an elegant wine-red suit, and he had cut a couple of leaves off of the grapes he had cooked with and stuck them into his hair instead of his usual precious metals and gemstones.
He had even painted his nails a deep wine-red color!
“I’m so glad that you are finally here”, he told the trainees (three women and two men, ranging from their late teens to their early thirties in age) in an absolutely enthusiastic tone of voice and shook the hands of each of them. One of the two men wasn’t much to look at, but the other one had pale blonde hair and big green eyes, and one of the three women was rather pretty, too, although she didn’t have anything on Edasha, of course. In the past, Devin would have taken the opportunity to flirt with one or both of them.
He had learned that flirting with the people that you worked with was inappropriate and could affect your reputation negatively though. Saoire would likely disapprove as well, and Devin really, really wanted to be a good baron and make his second-favourite Immortal ever happy, and he wanted everybody to love him and admire him. So, he decided to let it be. There were a lot of people that were unproblematic to flirt with in Scalvoris!
“My cook and I have made lunch for you as you are probably pretty hungry after the long trip on the boat. Once we are done, we can start discussing the project in more detail. I really look forward to that”, he thus continued and gestured for them to follow him before something truly terrible occurred to him, something that he hadn’t considered before. “You don’t have any allergies, do you?” he asked, his violet eyes a little wide, as he thought about them struggling to breathe after tasting his sauce.
Normally, he really enjoyed showing off his skills as a doctor and saving lives, but this time, he wanted everything to go absolutely perfectly.
Fortunately, all five trainees shook their heads.
