Grape Jelly

After Smooglenuff Wine: The Beginning.

Vhalar 15, Arc 721

On the 15th of Vhalar, Devin Thorn, High Priest of Delroth, Baron von Smooglenuff and medical genius in progress was standing in the kitchen of the manor yet again. He was standing in the kitchen a lot because he absolutely loved cooking, and that hadn't changed since he had become rich and famous and a couple of other pleasant things. This time, he was standing in the kitchen in an emerald green apron with neon green polka dots rather than his usual frilly white apron though because green was in fashion that season, and he was standing there alone.

About two or three breaks later, the cooks would start to prepare lunch, but for the time being, he had the entire kitchen to himself which was something that he absolutely loved!

On the counter in front of him was a gigantic cookbook that was bound in fine deep brown leather - because he wanted to try to make something that he had never tried to make before. The following trial, the first couple of trainees from Cally's would arrive. They would help with the work on the future Smooglenuff vineyard, and Devin wanted to receive them appropriately, with food - food that had been made with grapes, to be exact. He hoped that seeing the fruits of their future labour (Literally! Grapes were actually fruit!) would inspire them; and besides, he loved showing off his cooking skills.

He was a great cook!

"First, let's wash the grapes", he sang, mostly off-key, but with obvious and nearly overwhelming enthusiasm as he removed the grapes in question that were a beautiful shade of blue and purple from a huge paper bag (One of the servants had brought them back from a trip to Scalvoris Town), dumped them into a bucket full of fresh water and started cleaning them thoroughly so that there was not a grain of dirt left on them because using dirty fruit was disgusting and probably bad for your health, too.

Normally, he disliked cleaning and left it to the servants, but he made an exception where cooking was concerned because cooking was a lot of fun!

"And now let's remove the stems", he continued, trying to make his voice that was already pretty deep sound even deeper which didn't exactly improve the quality of his song. "Why don't they just sell grapes without stems and other superfluous appendages?" he asked, momentarily forgetting to sing because he found that a bit annoying, to be honest - and because he had just had a great idea. You could probably make a lot of money if you sold grapes without stems, cherries without stones and meat without bones!

Most people probably hated having to get rid of those things before they could start cooking. He'd just have to hire a stone, stem and bone remover person first, because he certainly didn't want to remove the stones from cherries, the stems from grapes and the bones from meat himself!

Unless he could just create grapes without stems and cherries without stones? He pondered the possibility of creating new kinds of fruit, conveniently overlooking the fact that he knew next to nothing about gardening, while he put the grapes in a kettle, crushed them, added water, covered them and brought them to a boil. After a few moments, he reduced the heat and let the grapes simmer. Finally, he extracted the juice. He wasn’t just making juice though. No, the juice was only the main ingredient for what he wanted to make.

He wanted to make grape jelly!

The juice needed to be stored in a cool place overnight to prevent the formations of crystals in the jelly according to the cookbook. Devin wasn’t sure how sticking it into the basement or a similar place was supposed to prevent the formation of crystals or why crystals were a problem (He liked crystals! They were pretty!). Normally, he questioned everything, but this time, he decided to do exactly what the cookbook said because he wanted the jelly for the trainees to be perfect.

Once he had taken care of the juice, he walked upstairs, into his room, past a couple of servants that bowed to him (He bowed right back!), plopped down on his couch, put his feet on the low table that stood in front of the couch, opened a bottle of red wine and poured himself a glass. Wine was made from grapes, too, so rewarding himself for his work in the kitchen by drinking some was highly appropriate in his opinion.

And what more, it was delicious!

Re: Grape Jelly

Vhalar 16, Arc 721

The following morning, Devin was back in the kitchen. This time, he was wearing an olive-green apron with lime green squares on it because always wearing the same style was boring and uncreative in his opinion, and what more, he had company. Mrs. Adams, the head cook and one of her kitchen aides, a cat cadouri girl with white fur and a very fluffy tail, were helping him finish the lunch for the trainees from Cally’s because he couldn’t prepare such a big meal on his own and because he had other things to do as well. He was a very busy baron!

Mrs. Adams had just baked bread and was roasting seedless grapes in a pan now while the cadouri was chopping shallots and thyme into very fine pieces – because the meal would consist of freshly baked bread with grape jelly and steaks with pan-roasted grapes, baked potatoes and a port wine sauce. The mere thought of that meal made Devin’s mouth water!

While Mrs. Adams and her helper did their job, Devin strained the juice that he had prepared the trial before through a thick cloth, measured four cups of the juice into a large pot and stirred in seven cups of white sugar.

He wasn’t sure why exactly you needed so much sugar to make jelly – it probably had something to do with chemistry and other pointless sciences – and he briefly wondered what would happen if you added salt instead, before he did what the recipe said anyway because he wanted his guests to be amazed and not give them a nasty stomach condition.

Once the sugar was in the pot, he brought the mixture to a boil and let it boil … and boil and boil. According to the cookbook that was lying on the counter again, the juice and sugar mixture needed plenty of time to cook and thicken. The book suggested at least twenty bits which sounded like an awfully long time to Devin. He would, he decided, as he stood in front of the pot, stirred and grumbled, invent super-fast jelly one of these trials!

“You need to skim off the foam”, Mrs. Adams remarked in a friendly tone of voice and smiled when the jelly was finally done before she handed him the jars that had been sterilized in the meantime. Once the foam was gone, Devin filled the jelly into the jars and covered them, and then he grabbed the steaks, cut them into equally sized pieces, added salt and pepper and put them into a large cast-iron skillet. He cooked them to medium done.

It was just as he removed the steaks from the skillet again that he had another interesting thought. What would happen if you smeared jelly on steaks instead of on slices of bread?

Re: Grape Jelly

Devin was just about to give his great idea a try because there were more than enough steaks and more than enough jelly for the trainees when the cat cadouri approached him and told him in a soft voice, “I’ve chopped everything now.” Having said that, she handed him a cutting board with shallot and thyme pieces on it, curtsied and went back to her part of the kitchen.

Devin briefly thought about adding shallots to the steak and the jelly because that sounded like an interesting and highly creative combination, but then he decided to focus on the food for the trainees instead again because he really, really wanted the vineyard project to go well. He started to make the sauce (with the help of a recipe!) while Mrs. Adams took care of the baked potatoes. She didn’t only bake them; she also filled them with sour cream and herbs!

“This looks fantastic”, Devin remarked because complimenting the employees every now and then was a good idea, and because it was true. He was almost tempted to try and take a baked potato instead of a steak now – without jelly though. While steaks with jelly seemed like a perfectly acceptable food combination to him, sour cream with jelly was a crime against …

He was just wondering if it was a crime against food, a crime against humanity or a crime against nature (There were just too many crimes to choose from!) when Mrs. Adams held a wooden spoon with a bit of sour cream out to him and asked him, “Would you like to give it a taste, Your Grace? I’d like to know if it also tastes fantastic!”

Devin’s eyes briefly widened – he had not expected her to simply offer him the sour cream – before he nodded enthusiastically. A moment later, he smiled all over face and proclaimed, “Wonderful. Would you like to give my jelly a try now?” he wanted to know. She had let him taste her sour cream, so it would only be fair if he returned the favor!

Re: Grape Jelly

A few moments later, after Mrs. Adams had given the jelly her stamp of approval, they were working again. Devin added the shallots to the grapes that the head cook had already roasted beforehand, stirred everything vigorously, sprinkled the grapes with flour, added broth, thyme, salt and wine – and took a deep breath because he really liked that smell.

Sauces with alcohol, he decided, were the best, so, when the sauce had thickened sufficiently, he stirred some more, and then he licked the spoon before he quickly put it away, a somewhat cheeky grin on his face.

“My son couldn't resist doing that either, back when we were still living together”, Mrs. Adams remarked with a smile on her face. “He always licked the spoon when I was done cooking, and then he ate whatever was left in the pot. I miss him”, she admitted with a somewhat wistful sigh.

“How is he, if you don’t mind me asking?” Devin wanted to know as he removed the pot with the sauce from the stove because he just wanted to reduce the sauce, but not burn it.

“Oh, he’s doing well. He hasn’t failed a single exam yet, and he’s made a lot of friends at university, or so he tells me in his letters. I just wish I were able to see him more often”, Mrs. Adams admitted before she remarked, “We should set the table now, Your Grace. The trainees will arrive around the twelfth break, won’t they?” she asked in order to be sure.

“Indeed”, Devin confirmed and helped her transfer the food into pretty porcelain dishes that had been painted with grapes (to match the theme of his newest project). While he did that, and waited for Korim, the butler to announce the arrival of the trainees, he secretly made a decision.

Mrs. Adams seemed to really miss her son. So, he would either give her a couple of trials off so that she could visit him – or simply bring her son to Faldrass.

Nobody should have to miss their family!

Comments:

You’ve got the grapes.
I’ve got the salt.
Let’s make lots of jelly.

Who knows what would have happened if Devin had decided to show Idalos is steak au salted grape juice recipe? Devin’s combination of creativity, whimsy, kindness, and bad singing always makes for a good read.

It’s probably better if Devin brings Ms. Adam’s son to Faldrass, so Mom doesn’t have to see his room, but that’s up to Devin, of course.

Enjoy your rewards!
