After Smooglenuff Wine: The Vineyard.
Vhalar 16, Arc 721
Morning.
On the 16th of Vhalar, Devin Thorn, High Priest of Delroth, Baron von Smooglenuff and master bard, was sitting in front of the luxurious vanity table in his equally luxurious bedroom, a box that was filled with numerous beads in front of him. There were wooden beads, glass beads, felt beads and even beads made of clay. There were black beads, white beads, green beads and rainbow-colored beads. Normally, Devin would have gone for the latter, but this time, he picked about half a dozen big and deep violet felt beads.
That trial, they would finally plant the grapevines that they would eventually turn into amazing and utterly delicious Smooglenuff Wine (He didn’t doubt that the project would be a success!); for that reason, he had decided to wear grapes in his hair, fake grapes, to be exact. If he used real grapes, he might eventually end up with a mess in his hair; besides, the grapes might attract insects, and that was something that he definitely wanted to avoid. He doubted that he would be able to make flies and similar creatures look good!
Beads and grapes had kind of a similar shape, so, he grabbed one of his headbands, a nice brown velvet one that was supposed to represent the stalk. He glued the beads onto the hairband, and then he grabbed a couple of leaves made of cloth that were supposed to be used for decorating and such and glued them onto the headband as well – and then he sprayed a bit of perfume that smelled kind of like grapes onto his newest work of art. In case people couldn’t tell that the beads in his hair were supposed to be grapes, the smell would definitely tell them. It was absolutely unmistakeable!
The trial before, he had worn a wine-red suit. He didn’t want to wear the same outfit two trials in a row though, so, he’d decided on a suit that was green, kind of like wine leaves, instead. Green was in fashion that season anyway; so, you couldn’t go wrong with that. Finally, he put on a pair of equally green and sufficiently sturdy gloves that would protect his hands while he was working and grabbed his domain bag, and then he was ready to go.
He walked to the site of the future vineyard (next to the garden and inside the wall, in order to protect it from the local wildlife) with a spring in his step and a wide smile on his face as he was quite excited. Mrs. Adams, the head cook of Smooglenuff Manor, Marvin and Miranda, the mouse cadouri siblings as well as the five trainees from Cally’s and a few servants were already waiting for him. They were standing in front of the rows of trellises they had built the trial before, and they had brought a lot of different tools.
There were also buckets with vines sticking out of them. When Devin came closer and took a look, he noticed that there was a bit of water in the buckets; the roots looked rather wet.
“Why are the vines in buckets of water?” he asked and furrowed his brow once he had greeted his helpers, momentarily forgetting that he preferred to pretend to be omniscient. It just seemed so strange to him though. Why not just water the vines after you had planted them?
