Singular and Dual Wielding

Image
Vhalar 111, Arc 721

On the 111th of Vhalar, Devin Thorn, High Priest of Delroth and Baron von Smooglenuff was standing in the garden of the manor, wearing a fancy emerald green coat with a fur collar because it was getting colder and holding a bastard sword that was made of fine steel in his gloved hands. He was standing there because Miranda, the head maid would probably disapprove of his practicing his combat skills inside, and because swinging your sword inside was impractical, anyway. There were far too many objects that could get in the way.

Wielding a bastard sword, he discovered, required him to hold his hands differently than when he was using his usual shortswords, with one hand near the guard and the other one behind it, which took a bit of adjustment, to be honest.

As he shifted his hands, trying to find the position that was most comfortable and that made it the easiest to wield his sword, something suddenly occured to him, and he briefly stopped and turned to his roommate Aidan who was a swordman of some skill himself, a questioning look on his face.

"Why is this sword called a bastard sword?" he wanted to know. "It doesn't look like a bastard to me. I mean, it's not made of Adamantite or Grave Gold or something equally fancy, but it's still a pretty nice sword, as far as I can tell."

"And",
he continued just as Aidan was about to open his mouth in order to answer. "What's the opposite of dual wielding? When you use two swords at the same time, you call it dual wielding. Is using one sword called 'unal wielding' then?" he wanted to know, looking even more confused than before, before he abruptly settled into his stance, holding the sword at about a fourty-five degree angle.

One of the guards that he used when you practiced with a shortsword looked kind of like that, so it would probably work, right?

Except that it required a bit of adjustment as well.

"I'm not sure why bastard swords are called bastard swords", Aidan admitted and watched Devin closely. "But I don't think that there is a specific name for when you use just one sword. Even if it had a name, it certainly wouldn't be 'unal wielding'. If anything, it would be 'singular wielding'. Languages have a singular and a plural, and some have a dual as well for when there are just two things, so it makes sense for weapons to be similar", he mused.

"Why are you practicing with a bastard sword anyway?" he wanted to know. "It isn't really your style!"

"I want to master every skill there is", Devin replied in a firm tone of voice. "And it is my style. I have a lot of styles!" he insisted.

Those had not just been empty words. He really planned on mastering every skill. He was confident that he'd succeed, too. He was a Mortalborn, so he'd probably live for a very long time.

Speaking of Mortalborns ...

His eyes lit up as another thing occured to him.

He was a bastard, the bastard of an Immortal, to be exact, which was the best kind of bastard, so practicing with a bastard sword was highly appropriate!

With that thought in mind, he made a step forward and extended his sword in a straight line towards an invisible opponent in a somewhat awkward looking thrust of sorts only to lower it again abruptly, a deep frown on his face.

"Hitting air isn't particularly helpful", he muttered and turned to face Aidan who had crossed his arms over his chest now, an appraising look on his face. "Why don't you practice with me? I'll even give you cake afterwards", he added in order to persuade him. Aidan always loved it when he fed him!

To his surprise, the human shook his head though and told him, "No thanks. I don't want you to accidentally stab me. You may be quite good at dual wielding or using one-handed swords, but you obviously need more experience when it comes to using two-handed swords."

"I'll see if I can find a training dummy for you to practice on though",
he added when Devin started to grumble slightly because he didn't want him to be mad. He wanted Devin to be happy and content and learn something!
Notes
From the Scalvoris calendar:

Farmers and pet-owners report something very odd this trials. Animals start behaving in a most unusual manner. They're friends. They're affectionate. From the Scaltoth jungle to Sweetwine and everywhere on the island, animals grow very affectionate towards each other. Like, lions and bunnies snuggle. Quite what causes it, no one knows. Will anyone investigate ? It last for the remainder of Vhalar, but then stops.

While Aidan went into the manor in order to find a training dummy, Devin practiced with his bastard sword some more. He liked his two short swords much better and would probably always favour them, but he did plan on mastering every kind of sword there was because "Swordmaster Devin" had such a nice ring to it. He wasn't sure if he'd ever fight in a real battle though. Fighting for fun was, well, fun, and he really liked being admired for his combat skill. Real combat was much more likely to cause injuries though, and injuries could make you ugly, and he really, really didn't want to become ugly. He was vain priest of Delroth, thank you very much!

The bastard sword, he noticed, was heavier than his usual weapons and required a little more strength, but for the time being, he didn't mind. He tried to get used to holding it, and he tried to swing it. Eventually, he put it down again though, abruptly reached into the domain bag at his belt and pulled out a book. He was definitely not a nerd, and he didn't plan on becoming one either, but he'd come to realize that books could be quite useful.

This particular book was a guide to swordfighting, written by a certain "Swordmistress Alina", and it had a lot of pictures which was why Devin preferred it over all the other books about swords. There was a whole chapter about what you should do with your hands, with pictures of hands on hilts that only had half a blade attached to them, because drawing a whole sword would have taken up too much space. It said something about the thumb of the dominant hand providing control and that there were times when putting said thumb against the blade was helpful.

So, Devin tried to hold his sword slightly differently, and then yet another thing occured to him. Aidan had been worried about accidentally being stabbed. What if he accidentally stabbed himself? He eyed the wooden practice sword that was leaning against a nearby tree (He'd mostly brought it because it had been lying right next to his real sword in the storage room.). He didn't like using practice weapons particularly because they were ugly in his opinion, but he liked stabbing himself even less, so he switched weapons before he practiced a few more thrusts.

He was just busy doing that when Aidan finally returned - without the training dummy he'd offered to get.

And what more, he seemed to be in quite a hurry.

"Devin!" he stammered, breathing rather heavily. "I ... I think Heidi and Bunny have gone insane. They are ..."

"You should take a look yourself",
he decided rather than explaining exactly what kind of insane thing Devin's goat and his flunny were up to.

Re: Singular and Dual Wielding

As they hurried into the manor and to Devin's room, the young man wondered what could possibly be going on. When Aidan opened the door, ushered him inside and pointed, his eyes nearly dropped out of his sockets. For a moment, he simply stood there, mouth agape. Heidi and Bunny were doing something absolutely strange. Normally, they tended to ignore each other. He didn't think that they liked each other very much. Now, they were lying together in Heidi's goat bed (that looked exactly like a dog bed) and cuddling though, and what more, Bunny was grooming Heidi!

"You are right", he said. "They are insane. I don't thank that kind of behaviour is normal."

"What do you think happened?"
he asked, still looking at his pets.

"I dont know", Aidan admitted before he asked, "Did you feed them anything strange? Could they have gotten a hold of some of the medicine that you use to treat your patients, for example? Drugs can cause strange behaviour", the human who was pretty much a veterinarian explained.

He was calmer now that Devin was here.

"They got the same food they always do, and unless they have learned to pick locks, they can't have ingested any of my medicine. I keep it in a locked cabinet in my treatment room", Devin replied, furrowing his brow.

A moment later, he walked over to Heidi's bed and knelt down next to it, gesturing for Aidan to do the same.

"Can you examine Bunny, please?" he wanted to know. "I'll take care of Heidi. Maybe, they came in contact with something other than my medicine. Maybe, Bunny accidentally hit his head really bad while flying. Head injuries can cause strange behaviour, too", he mused.

There was nothing physically wrong with Heidi as far as he could tell though. She was quite a happy and healthy little goat.

"Bunny seems to be okay", Aidan said before he gently picked the flunny up - he complained a little about being separated from his new best friend - and let go of him. He immediately flapped his wings, flew over to Heidi and continued to cuddle her. "There is nothing wrong with the way he flies either in my opinion. Did you notice anything?"

"No", Devin said, furrowing his brow. As far as he could tell, Bunny had flown in a nice straight line to Heidi, and what more, he had flown very quickly and enthusiastically which made him wonder what else could possibly be going on.

Magic?

Empathy, he knew from his classes in magic theory at university, could affect your emotions. He wasn't sure if it worked on animals though.

He racked his brain, marginally comforted by the fact that whatever had happened didn't seem to be harmful. In fact, Heidi and Bunny seemed to be happier than ever before.

And then his eyes suddenly lit up. He abruptly looked at Aidan and exclaimed, "Vhalaritis!"

"Strange things always happen in Vhalar",
he explained in a somewhat impatient tone of voice upon noticing the confused look on the other man's face. "I was desparked earlier this season. I was hit by that weird orb, but it probably also had something to do with the time of the arc. Vhalaritis is a perfectly reasonable explanation in my opinion. I should propose it to the scientific community. Maybe, I could even publish a paper about it", he mused and turned back to his pets.

For a while, Devin and Aidan watched them, both because it was such a strange sight and because they wanted to be absolutely sure that Heidi and Bunny were fine, and then they finally went looking for that training dummy together so that Devin could practice some more.

With his wooden bastard sword.

Comments:

Most people seeing a bunny and a goat cuddling would just think it’s adorable; Devin examines the animals for head injuries :p

Devin’s threads are always entertaining, especially when you detail his thought processes. I laughed when he got excited to realize that he and the sword had something in common! They’re both bastards! I wonder if swords use bastard names like “Scabbard”. You know nothing, Jon Scabbard! But I digress.

I was also amused that Devin was so preoccupied with not being a nerd when he surreptitiously consulted a book about sword techniques.

I think you’ve referred to “Vhalaritis” before. It’s an interesting observation and a funny concept. We’ll see if it gains acceptance in the Scalveen medical community.

Enjoy your rewards!
