Etch-A-Catch (Vega, please)

Vega wanted to show Oram her etch(w)ings. Seemed legit.

A small island with an active volcano, Faldrass is the home to Saoire's school and to the Faldrass Induk.

Re: Etch-A-Catch (Vega, please)

Wanna come up and see my etchwings?

Oram had no idea who ‘Sir Chip’ was, but knew Doran. The professor seemed a smart, knowledgeably, scholarly sort; it did not surprise the hunter that he might be one who could figure out some of the secrets behind the etchwing’s highly unusual properties. A suit of etchwing feathers that could make one nearly invisible would be even better than a duplicity suit for hunting, he thought. The traveler was a bit surprised that Vega herself hadn’t mentioned interest in such an idea. Soon after, however, she revealed that she preferred simple things that weren’t too technical, nor temperamental, nor tricky to maintain.

When she asked him about the crossbow’s ease of repair, Oram shook his head. ”No, it isn’t easy to fix,” he conceded. ”That is a drawback, I guess. If I relied more heavily on a bow for my hunting, that might well prove a problem. But I mostly use traps. Among other things, that means that I usually have enough tools to do at least simple repairs myself, if need arises.”

Oram listened to what Vega told him about the kazan fowl. Faster than turkeys? Turkeys could be surprisingly fast -the wild ones, not the farm-raised ones. This should be interesting. Not as challenging as hunting an etchwing, perhaps, yet interesting.

It was not long before they came across a group of the fowl. A family, perhaps? Vega clearly knew what she was doing, to have led him to a group of the birds they were looking for so quickly. Oram laid a bolt atop the tiller of his crossbow, which was already drawn, so he at least didn’t have to rattle about with the gaffe, before approaching any closer. The less noise he had to make as he closed in, the better.

Ziell had lately granted him the ability to move in utter silence, yet whenever possible, he tried to rely on his own skills, especially in situations like the present one, where he faced no consequence more dire than the embarrassment of losing what ought to be an easy catch.

Before moving, he looked around, mentally mapping all the various hiding places he might use, the lines of sight into the clearing, and such. He picked one tree, stalked towards it. Waited and watched the fowl for a bit, then stalked to the next closest tree.

Oram had not chosen to use the Shooting Star ability on his crossbow previously -more because he had simply forgotten than on any principle- but he did so now as he took aim at the kazan fowl. A small light appeared in the direction he pointed, and he used it to line up his aim. Would Vega notice it? He wondered. It seemed likely, if she was keen-eyed enough to hunt those elusive etchwings.

Would the *birds* notice it? Oram wondered next. And if they did, what would they do? Would they start, ignore it, or be intrigued by it? Walking the light up to the flank of the largest bird, the hunter was about to find out.

It was interesting to her, the different ways that they did the same thing. She wasn't much one for traps in hunting - it didn't fit her lifestyle. She and Arlo had been in Hopetoun a while now, but she didn't want to get used to hunting with traps - going out and hunting, bringing home a fresh kill, those were the ways she did it. There was no more reason for that other than it fitted their lifestyle better, but Vega had to admit that she found the differences in their ways of going about the same process to be interesting.

"I don't do a lot of trappin'," she said, sharing her thoughts on that. "Maybe you can give me some pointers after this baby has popped out, if time allows?" It wasn't appropriate right now and besides, Vega was too large with pregnancy to be faffing around with traps, but once the baby was here, she'd be more than happy to. Vega would never be one of the world's great thinkers, but she loved to learn practical things, and that was very much the case with traps, of course.

She held back as Oram stalked the kazan fowl, watching him and keeping one eye on the birds. The birds did not notice the shooting star ability and it gazed around with eyes which told that it had no idea that he was there. It was, in this circumstance, an easy kill because Oram had played it smart and kept quiet. That was what was needed with these, Vega was pleased to see him choosing his path and tracking his own movement; not because he did it but because that was exactly what she did too - there was an element of validation to it.

While the bird was oblivious, Oram would have only one shot. If he took it, the other kazan fowl would notice and would scatter. Of course, that would leave chicks which were much more vulnerable and easy to catch, should he choose to. She didn't say anything, just kept quiet and watched, wondering what choice he would make.

That said, even though the bird did not notice the shooting star ability, Vega certainly did. She said nothing at the time, waiting for Oram to take his shot, or not as he chose, but once they were no longer being quiet, Vega grinned. "You marked by Xiur?" She smiled. "Got that magic glowin' freckle? I love that ability, it's amazin'. Xiur is the one who asked me an' Doran to build that Beacon of Hope in Hopetoun, the lighthouse? Doran's marked by him too." She smiled at Oram. "I'm right glad we took the time to come out here an' do this. It's good to clear the head."

Re: Etch-A-Catch (Vega, please)

Kazan effect

The fowl did not respond to the spot of light moving along the ground towards them; they did not appear to have seen it. Soon, that point of light came up the flank of the largest male in the pack (Oram guessed it was male from the prominence of its wattle). The shooting star ability made aiming trivial, and Oram’s only real task was holding the aim steady through the shot. Letting out his breath completely just before pulling the trigger so that his aim wouldn’t be pulled off by moving his shoulders while breathing, he let his mind go blank while he kept his eyes and the spot on the bird. Then he squeezed steadily with his fingers. Jerking the trigger was a final pitfall one could fall into when shooting a crossbow.

The quarrel took flight with a clack, and a moment later the pack was all a-gobble and running. All but the large male Oram had just shot; that simply flopped to the ground without a single squawk or flurry. Reflexively, he reached for the gaffe and laid it atop the lugs, getting ready to pull the prong back once more for another shot; however, he stopped. The birds *were* fast, much like Vega had said, and their abrupt flight was loud and chaotic. His father had once said flocks of birds did this on purpose to confuse predators so that more birds could escape, and the son could believe that, watching the blizzard of feathers explode in front of him.

The chicks were slower, and the hunter realized that he could probably have taken a shot at one of them; however, he chose not to. He didn’t need nor want squab, and the nascent Ranger in him did not wish to deplete game here on Faldrass, when there were people living here who depended on it for food.

After waiting to see what Vega would do after he had taken his shot, Oram turned to her and answered her question. ”Not Marked,” he explained. ”He granted me that as a one-off, and it only works on this crossbow.” He patted the weapon, then hooked it on his belt and walked into the clearing to collect his quarry. He picked it up by the feet and held it up, using his other hand to extend one of the wings appraisingly. ”Nice looking bird,” he commented. ”Looks healthy, and plenty of meat. If you’ve got any cooking tips, I might be able to teach Refed how to cook these things right.” Thinking of the eidisi’s rather dry and tasteless first effort, he grinned ruefully.

He turned to look at the pregnant redhead. She clearly liked to hunt, but he didn’t want to be responsible for anything that might happen to her if they stayed out for too long. ”This has been great. Thank you for showing me all these things. We’ve got an etchwing and a kazan fowl. That’s a good afternoon, yes? We should probably head back.”

Apart from his concern for Vega, there was the fact that he now had two fairly large birds to carry. Adjusting those birds into position, he nodded in agreement to Vega's final sentiment.

"Aye. Hunting is a great time to just be where you are, you know? What're those terms people use? 'Present'. 'Mindful'. Stuff like that. If you'd prefer, let's go make where we are a little closer to Hopetoun."

Notes: It was interesting to see a collab between Oram and Vega. I hadn't gotten many chances to see them interacting with each other, so this was a bit of a treat.

I'm surprised and yet not that Oram didn't manage to tick Vega off during the hunt. He's pretty level-headed and no-nonsense, so it makes sense they'd get along well enough. Oram's method of using contraptions and crossbow and cunning to hunt was well established in this thread, and I found it very immersive as you hunted the Etchwings and later the Kazan fowl.

Vega was amusing and fun as always. I found it interesting that she's capable physically of hunting, but for whatever reason the pregnancy makes her all emotional. At least Oram didn't make her cry or thump him or give him a derogatory Vega-name. I think I'd like to see Oram get all awkward at some point in the future though, just so we can see how Vega reacts to Oram when he's not at his best.

Some homework for you, anyways.

Good writing, enjoy the rewards.
