The Great Smooglenuff Bonfire, Part 1

Image
Cylus 1, Arc 721

“Did you know that it’s already been an arc?”
Devin asked his friend Aidan who had come to live with him on Faldrass in an unusually thoughtful tone of voice. The two young men were standing in the Green Room that was, as the name implied, very green and looking at the garden that was cast in twilight and covered with a tiny bit of snow here and there. Other parts of Scalvoris were covered in a thick white blanket, but here, the orange sand caused most of the snow to melt again. “Exactly an arc ago, Saoire made me a Baron – well, one of three Barons. And I only wanted Alyssia to have the job!” he added and shook his head, his tone of voice momentarily tinged with amusement.

An arc ago, Devin had been a young doctor and student who hadn’t known anything about his divine origins. He had dreamt of being a noble and living in a palace – the manor came pretty close to that in his opinion – but he hadn’t known if his dreams would ever come true. Actually being a noble and living in such an amazing house had turned out to be different from what he had imagined it to be. It had been a challenge at times – and it had been absolutely awesome. He had never been so happy in his entire life!

“An arc ago, I was here, on this very island. We were remembering the eruption of Faldrass and the late Baron, and I learned about his last will”, he continued before he turned to Aidan abruptly and told him in a firm tone of voice, “We should have our own bonfire to-trial, our own celebration during which we think about what has happened over the course of the last arc – and how far the Barony has already come. With pirates and dragons, or at least one pirate and one dragon”, he added with a small smile in order to lighten the mood – and because it seemed as if pirates and dragons were becoming a trend.

Trends were something that you needed to pay attention to!

“We’ll need food and drinks”, Aidan who had been quietly listening so far pointed out and added, “It’s a wonderful idea in my opinion. Some of our employees won’t have the opportunity to celebrate somewhere else. I’ll definitely be there”, he told Devin.

“I’ll talk to Mrs. Adams”, Devin decided – Mrs. Adams was the head cook of Smooglenuff Manor. “We’ll also need wood for the bonfire, of course, and blankets, in case people are cold. I’ll let people know about the celebration, and I’ll also put a poster into the entrance hall. I think I’ll finally make that noticeboard a permanent fixture”, he added.

A little while ago, Devin had posted an announcement about sword fighting lessons for the employees of Smooglenuff Manor in the entrance hall. A permanent noticeboard would make it much easier to organize things and notify people of events, what kind of food Mrs. Adams had made this time – and even threats, although he hoped the latter would never ever be the case. Devin disliked bandits, monsters and natural disasters!

“Are you coming with me?” the Mortalborn who suddenly didn’t feel thoughtful at all anymore, but overwhelmingly excited and energetic, asked his friend.

There were a lot of preparations that needed to be taken care of before the evening. He also needed to take care of his outfit and makeup. He’d decided to wear a pirate and dragon inspired outfit, a tasteful one of course, because this was an important festival and not some sort of comedy show!
Notes
From the Scalvoris calendar:

The first dusk on the 1st Cylus sees the people of Scalvoris lighting a huge bonfire on the nearest beach and celebrating the night away. Each region does this differently, but celebrations are held everywhere. There might be a number of bonfires in different areas of Scalvoris Town or Almund, depending on what sort of party you want to go to. There's likely to be one that's child-friendly and at least one that's very adult. The only place where this doesn't take place is Immortals' Tongue and Ishallr.

While Aidan decided to look for blankets, and pillows so that they would be able to sit comfortably during their Cylus Dusk celebration, Devin made his way into the kitchen where Mrs. Adams, the head cook, a human woman with wild red curls, was currently making brunch. When she noticed the young Baron that reminded her so much of her own son sometimes (albeit a much more eccentric version), she briefly stopped chopping vegetables for her frittata (that smelled absolutely delicious in Devin’s opinion), turned to face him and curtsied. “What can I do for you, Your Grace?” she wanted to know.

Devin smiled because being called “Your Grace” still made him so very happy after all that time before he told her, “I’d like to hold a Cylus Dusk celebration on the beach this evening, and I was wondering if you had time to make something, nothing too crazy, tea and hot chocolate and coffee, and sandwiches, and if you had cookies to spare, that would be great as well. I’ll help, if I can”, he added, both because that might help persuade her and because he absolutely loved making food.

In fact, he loved it almost as much as makeup and hitting training dummies in weird outfits with wooden swords!

“Of course, you are invited. Everybody in the Barony can come. I’d like to celebrate us – and how far we’ve already come”, he told her. He wanted to let his employees know that he appreciated them, and that they were a very essential part of the Barony. In that regard, he considered it to be a good idea to thank them with more than just words every now and then, with a party and food – because you couldn’t eat words or have fun with them. His goal was to be the best baron and the best leader that Faldrass had ever seen!

“I’d appreciate it if you could also tell people about the celebration. I know it’s on short notice, but it occurred to me that not having our own bonfire just wouldn’t be right. All of Scalvoris celebrates”, he added and smiled an absolutely radiant smile.

“I’ll let people know as soon as possible, and I’ll get started on the food for the celebration after lunch”, Mrs. Adams told Devin. “I assume there won’t be much of a need for dinner since almost everybody will be at the beach?” she asked, because that was important to know. “May I also suggest a few canapés, and perhaps something with glowing eggs so that we’ll have something Barony-specific?” she continued – Devin’s chicken coop with glowing hens had become an important part of the Barony.

“I’d prepare a small dinner, just in case someone decides not to come. I don’t want anybody in the Barony to have to be hungry this evening”, Devin replied after he had given the matter some thought. “And that sounds great! We should definitely have glowing eggs! I love glowing eggs!” he told her with a huge smile on his face before he added, “Thank you so much, Mrs. Adams! You truly are the best!” He meant what he had said. Mrs. Adams was a great employee and working with her in the kitchen and discussing food with her was so much fun. In fact, all of the employees of Smooglenuff Manor were great, and he couldn’t have been more content with their work!

“Thank you, Your Grace”, Mrs. Adams replied with a small, amused smile before she turned back to her work and Devin left the kitchen with a spring in the step in order to find Marvin, the head engineer and ask him to oversee the construction of the bonfire. He wanted an amazingly impressive bonfire and not something that would collapse within moments and turn out to be a huge embarrassment. Fortunately, the mouse cadouri was quite receptive to the idea of a celebration – especially after Devin had told him about all the delicious food. Marvin loved food!

Re: The Great Smooglenuff Bonfire, Part 1

After he had eaten a bit of Mrs. Adams’ brunch and thanked her for it because it had tasted absolutely amazing, Devin decided to take care of the noticeboard because his upcoming Cylus Dusk celebration was the perfect opportunity to finally install it, as he had already pretty much concluded before. The first version of said noticeboard – Devin planned on improving it in the trials and seven-trials to come – constituted of a wooden frame with a cork interior that various messages could be pinned onto with relative ease. Being who he was, the young man had of course put a bit of glitter on the frame!

Since people might be confused as to what the big cork board with the glittering frame in the entrance hall might be good for, Devin grabbed the first paper on the stack of papers that he had brought, grabbed a brush and painted the word “NOTICEBOARD” on it in bright red letters. Below, he wrote the following line in smaller black letters: “This is where we announce events, what’s for lunch or dinner and everything else that is of interest to the Barony. If there is something dangerous that you need to watch out for, it will get posted here as well!

Hands on his hips, he eyed his work so far for a moment before he grabbed another piece of paper and started to draw something. He was not a good artist – in fact he might be one of the worst artists that Scalvoris had ever seen which was an accomplishment all by itself – but he did manage a very, very crude rendition of a bonfire. In order to increase the likelihood of people actually recognizing it as such, he made the flames a very bright kind of orange, and the logs underneath them a deep brown, like actual wood.

Below his drawing artistic disaster, he wrote in big letters that were hard to overlook, “CYLUS DUSK BONFIRE! On the eastern beach at 7 pm. Food, drinks and warm blankets will be provided. Let’s celebrate our accomplishments!

After he had pinned his papers onto the cork board, he stepped away from it only for another thing to occur to him. He had told Aidan to procure blankets and pillows. At Saoire’s Cylus Dusk celebration, they had also distributed packets with warm orange sand though. He’d do the same. Nobody’s hands should have to turn into a pair of icicles. Fortunately, orange sand was available in abundance on Faldrass!

Re: The Great Smooglenuff Bonfire, Part 1

It was already late afternoon – organizing a Cylus Dusk celebration, helping Mrs. Adams make sandwiches and canapés and telling people all about it had turned out to be far more work than he had anticipated – when Devin finally returned to his private quarters in order to take care of one of the most important parts: His outfit. Since he was very fond of his violet eyes and wanted to be able to see his surroundings properly, he decided against making an eyepatch that would cover one of his eyes part of his pirate dragon outfit. Instead, he opted for a tricorne hat in black and gold that featured a very big bright red feather.

He picked a fancy leather jacket in a matching red with a scale pattern that was padded inside and that would hopefully remind people of dragon scales, black pants, red leather boots with a small heel and a broad sash that went all around his waist. In case that alone didn’t make it obvious that he was going for a pirate and dragon inspired look, he then painted his eyelids with glittering red eyeshadow and weaved delicate red, scale-shaped metallic ornaments into his hair.

The result was a little extravagant, but very, very nice, at least Devin thought so (In his opinion, he was the most handsome man in all of Scalvoris!), which was why he resisted the urge to bounce when he finally found Aidan. The veterinarian was wearing a far less extravagant outfit – a cozy light blue sweater and pants under a dark blue coat – but he looked pretty good.

So, the Mortalborn offered him his arm in a gentleman-like manner, and together they walked to the beach where he had met the troublesome tourists that summer. Marvin and his assistants were just putting the finishing touches on the bonfire, and a few servants were putting blankets and pillows on the sand in order to create a sitting area.

Devin decided to help because the rest of the people would probably arrive soon, and he wanted everything to be absolutely perfect. He couldn’t wait for the celebration to start. It would be absolutely amazing!

The story continues here.

Notes: It seems like a momentous anniversary for Devin, and quite appropriate for him to celebrate. An arc ago that day he was made one of three barons. It seems like Devin has all he could ever want, it's hard to imagine what could top it.

The breakfast from Mrs. Adams sounded good, and the pirate outfit was really nicely described. Let's hope the rest of the celebration goes as smoothly as the set up!

Good writing!
