Council Meeting: Cold Cycle 721

1st of Vhalar 721

Almund is a thriving township with a dark side. With houses made from the wooden bodies of decommissioned ships, there are many opportunities here, coupled with many dangers.

Re: Council Meeting: Cold Cycle 721

As opinions rained from the other Councillors, and once more from members of the assembled crowd, Nir'wei remained utterly silent with just a small nod back to Doran in acknowledgement, weighing the opinions of the room and pursing his lips at yet more talk of disappointment and disapproval from the behaviours of those gathered. It seemed a recurring theme, from every individual in the room - yet they still defended it, as though some minor tweaks to the formula could somehow miraculously resolve the tensions and the political jabs... even as they themselves thrust forwards with even more.

Linca was the first. At first, he was almost nodding along - after all, the hesitation was understandable, and the concerns had reasonable foundation. Expected, but not insurmountable. Though, his eyebrows rose at some of the language that began to slip, here and there. Foolish. Idealistic. He had to school his expression as best as he could muster to avoid staring a hole through his head as the rattled Councillor spouted about previous accomplishments and even devolved into a personal snipe at his supposed inaction. Well, actual inaction. There wasn't much of a way to hide how that cut him on a personal level, but it was harder still to keep the retort in his mouth and not out on the table. Cool it, a voice whispered sharply in the back of his head. He didn't realise what it meant until he realised he'd been gripping one arm of the chair in a hold so tight it might snap. Damnit. He loved Karem with everything he was, but the power she'd laced into his bones was downright unwieldy when it required constant attention to avoid expending himself on everything he touched.

His attention returned to Linca just as he was finishing his little rant, aimed somehow solely at himself and not even at the person that had suggested it in the first place. He just gave a very small shake of his head, and looked elsewhere. Dismissal. So many things he was ready to say at that moment, but considering all that had already happened and all the things that could, the last thing needed now was an open back-and-forth debate. They'd said their pieces.

More talk. More back-and-forth and compromise. Always the middle ground, always just enough to be not enough that everyone could fall short while secure in the knowledge that none of them could take the whole blame for it.

Then, Brendel stood. Brendel, the focus of Linca's argument. Their 'choice'. He hadn't been around when they'd made that one, as Linca had been so kind to point out as if it was yet another mark against his favour, but Nir'wei could see exactly why, at least. The man handled conversation like enemies on a battlefield; turning to each one and cutting them down in just a few sentences that fell like precise blows. He really did feel bad for Balthazar at that point, facing yet another full assault like that, though it seemed nobody was being let off lightly. A full public dressing-down, this was to be... on top of the various other ones they'd all suffered to varying degrees across the day. By that point, he was just... tired. By the time it rounded back around to them all, and specified on him as well once more just to add a little more insult to injury, he met it head-on and said nothing. Actions speak louder than words. Karem above, how he wanted to yell it back at him. Sit in front of Valtharn and tell me how much fearmongering I'm spouting here. He didn't, though. Not a thing. He wasn't that much of a fool.

Even as the final remarks were carried out in the wake of Brendel's scathing dressing-down, he knew what the response was going to be from this. Well, some small part of himself had hoped that it might have turned a different way for some reason, but it had been the looming expectation regardless - nobody in the room was interested in losing their job. Despite the fact there were concerns about the empty seats and the lacking volunteers to fill them, despite their collective disappointment in each-other and the disappointment from those before them. It felt as if everyone was scrambling for their own little patch of moral high ground from which they could perch and posture to the crowd and at the end say 'but I did well'.

He sighed, and made his vote. How soon do you think it will be, before they're ready to make the first hunt? he asked quietly.

You're thinking too far ahead. The unease in their tone was palpable. I don't know. Hadn't even thought about it. You really want this? There was deep, inherent risk in the thoughts rushing through his head, but nothing would change here. The same resources, the same governance, the same problems, the same... the same worries plagued his head over and over, replaying that day before Faldrun, and Syroa, and Audrae, and Valtharn. Later. Come visit us later. Then the wolves went quiet, their attention on something else far away.

Bao's idea, it seemed, grabbed some mixed opinions. Oram seemed on board with it, though the tired man looked as if he was mostly just done with comments that weren't warranted or helpful to the meeting. As a matter of fact, he simply looked tired, Bao giving a small sympathetic glance to his friend. He didn't like to see anyone suffering, even if it was just as simple as being tired. This meeting had to be draining everyone, and he knew that it would be a matter they would be glad to be done with. Perhaps after this meeting, he would go and buy some chocolate for himself, or drink some cocoa.

Anything to feel relaxed after this experience.

Despite some liking his suggestion, others made it clear that they didn't think it was the fix, including the former Alberach. Bao didn't take any offence to it, nodding at the criticism and forcing a light smile, though it was clear from his expression that he was very quickly out of his comfort zone. He didn't really understand the problem with it, nor did he think the idea would blame the "people", more that it would allow a more refined way to discuss issues without the presence of people who were not willing to do the hard work, just show up and criticize. Those with ideas could write letters, talk to council members outside of the meetings or find other means of communication. But he didn't bring up those points, opting to be quiet in hopes the topic would come to a quick end.

At Brandel's words, some shared their thoughts and opinions, though Bao continued to stay quiet. He had to admit, he knew little to nothing of politics, but what he did know about was respect. Every word Brandel said pulled in attention, everything he said grabbed at the people listening, and even the uninformed Bao found himself wanting to listen to the man. He nodded respectfully to the words of everyone in the room, quietly contemplating what his vote would be when it came time to it. Doran said it best, in his mind, about the meeting. Many things got done, Bao had spent a lot of time dealing with what he could as the Welfare council member. The supplies for Vega, the Welfare following the Slag's Deep incident.

"Well said" the Cadouri nodded politely to Doran, wanting it to be known that he agreed. Then he placed his vote, as it was time to do.

Re: Council Meeting: Cold Cycle 721

Image

As soon as he finished speaking, Darius worried that he might have overstepped the mark. After all, he wasn't a councillor and he wouldn't be able to take part in the vote itself.

He had initially attended the meeting with the intention of building a relationship between the barony and the council.

But he decided that Scalvoris belonged to him just as much as he belonged to it. And he knew that he would have only chastised himself later if he hadn't respectfully said what was on his heart. Talk of autocracy and private meetings had stirred him to speak.

Darius watched on and listened as others responded. He felt a sense of relief when he found agreement in the words of Shania, Linca, and Rand. Not every statement matched his, but enough of them did to make him feel that his words had been justified.

The settlement leader looked on as Linca's silent support for him lingered. He wondered why the Havardreen seemed so willing to hear him speak. Was it because he had helped Rorom hunt Breachfang? Did he feel that he owed Darius in some way?

The blond mariner certainly didn't believe that to be the case.

And then Brandel rose to his feet. The former Albarech was an old man, buy to any Scalvorian, he was a giant. Darius held his breath as the man prepared to speak. Did he have the right of it? Or would he agree with his successor?

As it turned out, the man had quite a bit to say. And, for the most part, Darius found himself nodding in agreement - including when he himself was the target of Brandel's feedback. The man was right, of course. And his suggestion was precisely why he was there. But he saw no need in pointing that out. He simply agreed.

When he was done, Kura felt the need to speak again. The Albarech appeared to backtrack somewhat on her earlier suggestion, which Darius was grateful for, but then she appeared to criticise the gathered public for a meeting that she considered to be 'a mess'. Apparently it was up to them to 'learn from this' and 'do better next time'.

Darius bristled at the suggestion, but managed to bite his tongue. It was unfair, he felt, to hold a meeting without making clear how it was structured, and then criticise people for not following the unspoken rules. Shania had proposed an excellent alternative, so there didn't seem to be any reason for Kura to labour the point.

And if anyone was to be criticised for losing control of the meeting, surely it was the person tasked with running it? Granted, it was common courtesy to not wander into someone else's meeting and start addressing people without first seeking permission to do so, but shifting blame to others for your own failings was not indicative of strong leadership.

Kura had proven herself to be an effective leader in a crisis, but in that moment, Darius wondered if people management - a critical aspect of leadership in his view - was her forte.

Brandel never spoke in Council meetings any more, and he made that choice deliberately. He supported Kura and felt that she was good for Scalvoris, but he had spoken up now and there was a sense in the room of people watching him, listening to him. He would always be a hero in the eyes of the people of Scalvoris and his words had weight.

Kura spoke first, and she responded, she clarified, and she made her own points. There were some grumblings and there was a general murmur of discontent at her last point. Those with sharp eyes and earsDetection at expert would notice that the grumblings were more directed at Kura than anyone else. People grumbled throughout, no matter who was speaking, but for Kura it was worse. Should there be someone with real attention to detailMaster Detection , then it was when she spoke of the Eternal Empire - and when she spoke of the Pirate Lords.

Oram had no more to add but he watched what was going on, as did Woe while Balthazar thought many things but, again, said nothing. Woe spoke of the Effigy he bore and they nodded; Shania smiled at him and inclined her head at his message.

Doran had a few points to make, providing information on Rynmere, but also suggesting that people be invited to take up places, rather than waiting for people to take them. Brandel nodded at his suggestion of a more pro-active approach. He reminded people that the council was more than this meeting and there were mumbles of assent at that, people seemed to be more positive.

Then, Elisabeth suggested that a group was formed to assess the threat in Rynmere and there was no response to that, but Rand nodded his head. Then, she put her name forward for the role of Academic and there was a slightly louder whisper of surprise around the room. Leigh, the representative for Scalvoris Town, watched Elisabeth carefully. If she got that role, after all, she would be based in Leigh's area of representation. The woman simply arched an eyebrow, though, and said nothing.

Nir'wei too was silent, simply engaging in his own inner reverie and Bao spoke only to praise Doran's words. While Darius had many thoughts on the matter, he kept quiet.

And the Council members voted.

Shania did as she always did. She counted the votes and then she passed them to Kura before she stood and delivered them.

"On the matter of the structure of the council. Overwhelmingly, the vote is for the council to remain and to be an open forum, but to implement changes which will make it both more structured, and more efficient. With the Albarech's permission, I will put forward a proposal for that." That was that done.

Looking around, her eyes landed on Woe. "With regard to the position of Egg, the vote was nearly split clean down the middle, but one vote made the difference. With a majority of one vote, the Council has voted to keep the position of Egg open until more is known of the current Egilrun Representative's fate." She looked at Woe with a calm expression but, once more, there could be heard the grumbling of discontentment around the room. It was obvious that there were a minority - but not a tiny one - who were not happy at this.

"As to the matter of the Academic," she said, turning to Elisabeth. "We have the same situation. By virtue of one vote the Council has voted no to this."

The grumbling grew louder. And then, one man stood up. He was not a well known man, he was a dock worker in Scalvoris Town. "This isn't right!" He said. His voice shook with emotion, frustration. "You stand there, Madam Albarech an' say that people aren't volunteering. Whether people are from here or not, that doesn't matter. That isn't what it means to be Scalvorian. Bein' Scalvorian means doing right by the place, being of the place. Birth isn't important, acts are." He shook his head. "I'm not goin' home berated for not volunteerin' for something - for you to say that the people of Scalvoris don't step forward makes me clean want to spit." He didn't, thankfully.

"Then two people show up, an' they volunteer an' you turn them down? Mister Morandi, I know him. I heard he stepped up for Scalvoris, an' were fundamental in the Forging, and he's done a lot for Egilrun. Come to that, he's funded a new Order for Egilrun, an' he's a member of the Order of the Adunih. Liza disappeared when the Warden did, an' you're keepin' her place open for her? You didn't do that with the Loggin' Consortium, because you knew they were bad people, but it's been long enough, an' Egilrun needs someone. An' as for Miss Angelus, well she's stepped up an' she's a hero of the Forgin' too. We owe our lives, our island to these people, an' to many of you round the table, I know that. But she's done good on Faldrass, an' I hear of her bein' a good leader. " He shook his head.

"You're surroundin' yourself with your friends, an' that's not right. I don't care who likes who, but I care that things get done. If you're rejecting people what step forward, you should give a reason why. Shame on you all!" He was angry, there was no doubting it. "At least the Pirate Lords didn't pretend to be civilised, an' didn't hide behind scraps of paper. Mr Morandi an' Miss Angelus, they're in the real world, among the people of Scalvoris. His gaze swept across them all. "The issue isn't that the people of Scalvoris don't step up. It's that when they do, you tell them no. Because these two folks, folks who've saved this island, who've worked for it, an' who've saved lives - they're of Scalvoris as true as I am an' I were here born an' here I'll die. But if they won't be good enough for your Council, then I know you won't look at a dock man like me, an' I don't want to work for people who treat people so unfairly"

That said, he straightened his jacked and ran a hand through his silvering hair. "Was a time that I'd come to these meetin' s an' I'd know that even if I disagreed, the people at the table were workin' for me an' people like me. But with the exception of Mr Bao, I don't recognise any of you, not any more. This isn't Scalvoris, it isn't our way. This is Eternal Empire politics, an' it's got no place here."

And calmly, with his head held high and in a quietly dignified way, he stepped out of the building.

Each of the tabs below is an existing role on the Scalvoris Council which is NOT filled by a PC.

~ Where there is an NPC in there, they are currently in the role.
~~~ If the role is identified as Vacant, that NPC is willing to move out / on.
~~~ If the role is NOT identified as Vacant, the NPC wishes to stay - but that doesn't mean that PCs can't take over, it'll just be more of a struggle.

~ If there is no NPC there, the role is currently empty.

Militant

Image
Name: Rand Broson
Race: Sev'ryn / Human
Age: Born 667
Title: Militant of Scalvoris Council / Militant of Elemental
Skills: NA: Prophet only NPC. You don't need to know! :D
Other Information: Rand is a hard, fair man. He doesn't speak much as he believes that you learn a lot more by listening than you ever will by talking. He is the head of the Scalvoris Military (the Elements) and he is very proud of that job. A hard working man, he tends towards solitude and does not make friends easily. He has a temper, as his troops will attest and he will not back down when he believes he is right. [/mod]
 ! Message from: Peg
Rand is well-respected and has brought the Elements back from the brink of a very negative situation following the Scalvoris Docks Collapse. He would be very difficult to get out of his role and replace

Accountant

Name: Shania
Race: Unknown
Age: Unknown
Title: Gunvorton Overseer / Accountant of the Scalvoris Council.
Skills: Unknown
Other Information: If there is one thing which everyone agrees on, it is that Shania is a nice lady. Friendly, helpful and always willing to help out, she is the backbone of the growing region on Gunvorton. She knows everyone, it seems, and she's always there should anyone need a little bit of information. She runs the local inn and it is her job, as she tells everyone, to make sure that all who come to her establishment leave just a little bit happier.

Skills: NA: Prophet only NPC. You don't need to know! :D
Other Information: An educator of children by trade, Marcelle would be the first person to tell you that she is out of her depth in this whole Council thing. But she's doing her best and she has a sharper mind than she gives herself credit for. She is a passionate teacher and a friendly woman. Also, she isn't afraid of conflict and has the skills of managing a classroom of five arc olds. Veteran soldiers have quivered and quaked at her stare.
 ! Message from: Peg
Marcelle is well-respected and friendly, but she doesn't want this job. She would be relatively easy to get out of this role and replace as long as her replacement makes sense.

Race: Mixed Blood
Age: Born 687

Other Information: Francis is a shrewd businesswoman who is here representing the Merchants' Guild. Really that is exactly and only who she is representing. She has worked as a businesswoman throughout the north and east of Idalos and her bottom line is the profit. She is nice, friendly and polite to everyone. She would also sell her grandmother for the right price.
 ! Message from: Peg
Francis is a respected member of the Merchants Guild, although there are some suggestions that she is too reluctant for change. She would be very difficult to get out of this role and replace for anyone not in the Merchants' Guild. For those in it, much easier.

Other Information: Linca is the chief of Havardr, the hardest worker on the island, some say, and a straight talking fellow. He will trade, but he won't be fiddled and is a hard negotiator.
 ! Message from: Peg
Linca would rather die than abandon Havardr. He would be very difficult to get out of his role and replace

Proper

Name: Leigh Birch
Race: Human
Age: Born 693
Title: Scalvoris Town Representative of Scalvoris Council
Skills: NA: Prophet only NPC. You don't need to know! :D
Other Information: Leigh is the Mayor of Scalvoris Proper. She lives there and has her offices there. She is a friendly and very well organised woman who is keen to listen to all of the opinions on offer. She has trouble sometimes as she can have a bit of a tendency to avoid conflict, but that just means that she sits back and doesn't take sides. It certainly doesn't mean that she's lacking opinions.

Leigh is well-respected but some see her as not active enough. She would be relatively easy to get out of this role and replace

Re: Council Meeting: Cold Cycle 721

Woe heard the grumblings about Kura, generally, but wasn't sure of the reasoning. He could only presume it followed her blatant power grab in the previous round of voting, but then that was only speculation. He still hadn't gotten over the fact, and wasn't as positively inclined toward her as he had been upon arriving in the Council Hall. So maybe that was it. In any event, he found himself of a mind with the rest of the common Scalvorians in attendance. He wouldn't count himself among these Barons, councilors, soldiers and demagogues. Even so, he was determined not to foolishly lose his temper again, and so resumed his seat until the vote was announced, and the results rendered to him.

So they still wanted Liza? And her triplets? Well perhaps they didn't even know about them... "Very well, I thank the council for its consideration for Egg. And I wish you the best of luck finding the current Egg or one of her triplets to replace her. I've met them, and while I feel they were incredibly frivolous on the surface, I acknowledge that appearances can sometimes be deceiving. Perhaps any one of them would've made a fine Egg. So good luck finding her or one of them."

After Woe said that, a stunning outpouring of emotion and common sense channeled its way through a simple guy from the docks. Woe was fairly impressed with the way he argued his point, and then how he denounced Kura openly. Such a thing took courage, especially considering the Albarech's revealed trait of being an autocrat and a potential tyrant. Woe felt he owed it to Kuvarakh, if nobody else, to bring that man into his fold, his network. He could see a use in keeping common people with common sense surrounding him. It was fine to have a panel of experts as councilors, for Kura. Woe preferred to have more ears on the ground, however.

So once dock guy was done giving his speech, and left the building in a dignified manner (more than Woe's prior exit had been), Woe folded his hands over his lap, and bowed his head to the council, "If you'll excuse me, I have business elsewhere, and I don't believe my presence here can serve any further purpose for the council. Thank you for hearing me." This said, if he was allowed, he rose from his seat and followed after the dock guy.

Once he was out on the street, he'd look for him. If he succeeded in spotting the man, he'd hail him down, "Hey!" He would move to catch up with him, and once there, greet him, "I'm Woe." He waited a moment for the man to return introduction, "That was quite the speech you gave."

Woe extended his hand to shake, and if it was taken, he would go further on to say, "I'm wondering, are you looking for work? I have a job you might be interested in."

Re: Council Meeting: Cold Cycle 721

Kura heard the grumblings when she spoke, and she had expected them from the reaction to her proposal. She didn't doubt that she had just burnt away a lot of the goodwill that she had gathered. It would be responsibility to get it back, but that would largely come after the meeting. She did frown slightly at the results, but given how erratic both Woe and Elisabeth had been during the meeting, she couldn't entirely say she was surprised. Both had done good works, that was for sure, but they hadn't put their best foot forward this day, and it had hurt their first impression to many of the Council. When Woe stood and gave them his farewell, she nodded at him, then turned to face Shania to address the point about the Council's structure, but before she could say anything, another citizen of the island stood to say his piece.

Kura could agree with most of his points, but there was a slight twitch when he referred to how they were operating as "Eternal Empire" politics. Whether it was amusement or irritation, even she couldn't have rightly said. On the amusing side, he was very wrong. No position of importance would have been allowed to go unfilled for more than a trial in the empire, not without risking a visit from a very irate Raskalarn. Filling important seats exclusively with your friends would have much the same risk. However, she was pretty certain she was the only person on the room with the possible exception of Brandel who actually knew that. This led directly into the irritated side, as she was pretty certain that accusation was going to come up any time someone disagreed with literally anything she did.

As it stood, she watched quietly as the man departed, then shook her head. "Crisis and war, one right after the other for arcs. Perhaps we have lost focus..." she said, her voice quiet enough that only those at the table were likely to hear her. Then she turned to look at Shania. "Accountant Shania, in light of how this meeting has gone, I advise we save any discussion for a re-organization of the Council until our next meeting. Both to give everyone time to think on how they want the council to run, and to give passions time to cool." she said, her voice calm. She felt a small hum at the back of her mind as her familiars conversed. There was a sense of unease among them, but Speck, Kura's oldest partner, calmed them. No one had a perfect run of things, and she was confident that Kura would come back from this.

Kura, for her part, knew that she could come back from this, but she would have to change how she did things. And she wasn't quite sure what form that change would take.

Re: Council Meeting: Cold Cycle 721

A Modicum of Conclusion

Oram was new to the whole politics thing, yet even he could see that this meeting was not going well. There was a lot of discontented muttering from the assembled townsfolk as they listened to all the talking, especially Kura’s talking. Oram could hardly blame them; the Albarech might be better-rested than the Chief Ranger was, but she was clearly not having her best trial, either, and the gallery did not seem to approve, especially when she started going on about the Eternal Empire and the Pirate Lords. It was all preachy, needlessly defensive, and dull, and it didn’t sound like she was winning over her audience.

The reprieve from talking that prevailed while the Council voted did not last. Votes were cast, Shania announced the results, and then people started talking again. And getting angry. Oram had not been sure what to expect when Elisabeth put herself forward for the office of Academic, but he had fully expected Woe to be a shoe-in for Egg -at least, he had before this meeting had started. Oram had voted in favor of both of them, yet the Council as a whole rejected both of them by one vote.

The outcome added to the annoyance that was growing among the onlookers. One man in particular rose and spoke out about what he saw as the hypocrisy of the Council. Oram could only groan in response, because he sensed the man was neither wrong in what he said, nor out of line to take exception as he did. That he himself was lumped in with the criticism of the Council as a whole, even though he himself had voted for offering both Woe and Elisabeth seats, just added to his frustration and dismay. And it brought up a new emotion, too: resentment. That wasn’t a helpful thing to feel right now, so he tamped down on that resentment as he watched the townsman storm out of the chamber, but it was still there. Somewhere in the sluggish, writhing tangle of his thoughts, Oram had the idea to ask Clem, once he got back to Scalvoris Town, if he knew the man who had just spoken.

The other thought that stood out to the Chief Ranger’s consciousness from that tangle was that he just wanted this damned session to be over. This was his first Council meeting, in any capacity, let alone as a Councillor himself, and he not enjoyed it one bit, nor drawn any satisfaction from it. And he just knew that once he got back, Osric, Signy, all his friends and acquaintances, as well as his fellow Rangers, would pester him to tell them all about what happened. And that he would need to recount what had just happened here multiple times. He would definitely want a good night’s sleep before doing so.

Re: Council Meeting: Cold Cycle 721

Nir’wei didn’t say anything to Brandel’s speech which puzzled Doran slightly, to be honest, especially after the man’s demand for a spearhead. Darius remained quiet as well, and Bao only raised his voice in order to compliment him – which was met with a brief nod on the Mortalborn’s part. Elisabeth suggested forming a group to assess the threat in Rynmere and finally put her name forward for the role of Academic which was interesting, to say the least. And all around the room, people murmured, whispered or grumbled. They were discontent with Kura, he observed, and it was worse when she spoke of the Eternal Empire and the Pirate Lords, which didn’t surprise him.

He decided once more that that was something that he would have to look into.

For the time being, he focused on the vote itself though. He had to admit, he was relieved that the Council had not decided to abolish itself or voted in favour of installing a dictator. Woe’s application for Egg was turned down, and, as he had pretty much predicted at this point, people grumbled. The people that voiced their discontent were a minority, but not a small one and thus not something to be ignored in his opinion.

And it seemed as if Woe himself had something to say about the Council’s decision to keep the position of Egg open until more was known about Liza’s fate as well. As he shared what he knew about Liza and her sisters, Doran looked in Kura’s direction, quietly wondering.

Had she been aware of this?

The grumbling grew louder when Elisabeth’s application was turned down as well, and then one man suddenly stood up. He agreed with some things that the stranger who claimed to be a simple dock worker said, and he disagreed with others. Elisabeth and Woe had not been the only ones that had volunteered for a seat on the Council that trial. He had volunteered as well, and his application had been accepted, which did at least call the man’s accusation that the Albarech had decided to surround herself with her friends into question.

He had come to respect the Albarech during the Forging, but he preferred to think that he was not biased towards her, or anybody else – or biased against someone for that matter.

He relied on facts and logic for the most part.

He decided not to say anything in that regard though, and he didn’t point out that nepotism was unlikely to be the reason why the vote had gone the way that it had in his opinion, and that his own vote had not been based on feelings of friendship or the lack thereof, either. The atmosphere seemed somewhat heated to him; in such a situation, people were prone to emotion and less receptive to reasonable arguments than they usually were.

He simply continued to listen, quietly and thoughtfully, taking note of what was being said and how it was being said. While he disagreed with the man in certain regards, he could not help but be impressed by the passion with which he spoke. So, when the man’s speech seemed to be about to come to an end, and he claimed that he didn’t recognize them anymore – a part of the speech that was not directed at him, he decided, since he had only been made Devout during this meeting – he rose to his feet and called out to him.

“Sir, before you go, I’d like to briefly talk to you. I was quite impressed with your speech. Would you be willing to meet with me once we are done here, when you have time? I’d like to discuss what you said with you. I think it’s important that the Council listens to the citizens of Scalvoris and pays heed to their thoughts and feelings as well as their needs. As the new Devout, I’d like this to be one of my focus points”, he spoke, keeping his tone of voice, calm, polite and utterly respectful. He didn’t know if the Council was out of touch with the common population or not, and he would not make a statement in that regard until he had definite proof one way or another, but he thought that listening to them, truly listening to them, was something that was important in any case.

He had asked the man if he would be willing to meet and let him decide the time because he didn’t even want to give him the impression that he was making demands. They were equals, at least in certain regards, even though one of them was human and one an ancient Mortalborn – they both lived on Scalvoris and cared deeply about the island.

No matter what the man said, eventually, the son of Ziell sat down again and turned to listen to what seemed like it might be the Albarech’s final statement. He had to admit, he had disagreed with some of the things that she had said, but he appreciated her wondering if the Council had lost its focus.

Perhaps, he thought with some measure of hope, the Council would be able to learn from what had happened and do better in the future.

He still believed that the chaotic nature of the council meeting had been a big problem and that the Council had done a lot of good – he was not someone who changed his mind several times within the course of a break - but there was definite room for improvement, regardless.

Re: Council Meeting: Cold Cycle 721

Arc 721, Vhalar 1

Many emotions had coursed through Elisabeth during the meeting, but if she had to describe the feeling she felt at that moment, exhaustion came closest to the mark. Not the physical kind, obviously, but mental. She had spent the meeting trying to figure out how things worked, formulating appropriate responses, and utterly failed in almost all of it. No matter what she did or said, it wasn't right.

There had been no follow-up to her final remarks, allowing her to retake her seat next to Balthazar. The Council would do what it wished, and the young settlement leader felt she had offered all she could.

The suggestion of proactively speaking to people in regards to council seats struck the young mage as a bit odd. People could see it as trying to fill the Council with others that wouldn't put up too much of a fuss, and it wasn't necessarily an idea that appealed to her personally. It had the potential to be disastrous in the wrong hands, but maybe they could figure out a way to make it work.

Woe not being voted to Council was a bit surprising to her. Many members seemed to think he would be suitable. That she hadn't wasn't surprising at all. In fact, Elisabeth had anticipated that outcome based on the meeting to that point. To be blunt, the Council members had decided they were better off without her and Woe. She wasn't upset, irritated, or sad about that.

Elisabeth was tired.

She absolutely hadn't expected the grumbling from the people around her and the man from the gallery speaking up. Elisabeth had to admit that he had a fair number of good points. She knew nothing of Eternal Empire politics, so she couldn't really speak to that, but it was apparent from the reactions in the room that people connected to what he was saying. The message the Council was sending was not a good one, but then again, what did she know of optics? Apparently she couldn't even figure out how to present her own self.

The man spoke of her good work on Faldrass and broader impact as someone involved in the Forging. It was difficult for Elisabeth to come to terms with the idea that she had a reputation now and that the things she accomplished mattered to people. In terms of Haven, it was expected because she worked directly with them, but her status in the broader sense throughout Scalvoris? People knew her name now, and she couldn't hide from that fact any longer.

Woe said his farewell and left, and the young mage felt the same way about her continued presence. The Council had been clear with their decision, leaving her without any doubts regarding any further help she could offer.

Elisabeth would go home to Haven and continue doing what she had been doing. There was still Jacien's offer to contend with, but that would sort itself out – one way or another. Honestly, there was less surety regarding what she wanted to do with the Spirit Branch now, so some thinking needed to be done.

While Elisabeth wasn't upset at the outcome, it did make her wonder how others viewed the work she and Woe did. There had always been a sharp sense of accomplishment and pride regarding what she had achieved. The young woman had felt it walking into the meeting but now had dulled somewhat. What she and Woe did for the betterment of Scalvoris and its people seemed to be better received by the people than the Council. Perhaps neither of them had put their best foot forward, but in others' eyes, did that erase what they had accomplished? It was all very baffling, and there was only one conclusion to make from the available information.

She had come to the Council meeting to learn, but what Elisabeth had learned was not what she had expected, and that fact disappointed her.

When the time came, she addressed the Council one last time. "Thank you for your consideration."

Your Review
Re: Docks Guy.
Any of you who choose to may have a thread with Docks Guy, you may NPC him in a solo or a collab. He's a normal, usual Scalvorian. He says that it's really unusual for him to speak up like that and, if you speak to him, he's mild-mannered and unassuming. He says that he felt compelled, that he was moved by some deep urge. If pushed / pressed, it will become apparent that it is very unlike him, but he believed everything he said. If you're going to do more than talk to him, please pm me for any deets needed. Thanks.

Woe

Overview

This was quite a rollercoaster ride for Woe - I was surprised that the vote went against him. It was interesting watching the way he reacted here, and how he chose to leave and then come back. Lots of interesting interaction - and I'll be interested to see what he does re: politics in the future. Regarding Dock Guy - he would listen to Woe and what Woe has to offer, but the best you're going to get from him is him as a contact / informant . I love how you write Woe - he changes his mind so quickly, and you play that really well - but at the same time he's consistent about what he wants, here, namely to be Egg. I'm interested to see what happens with him and Shania in the future - the beginning of a productive relationship here, perhaps? Anyhow, enjoy your rewards -they're well-deserved.

Elisabeth

Overview

I think the thing that is most apparent about Elisabeth is how very much she wants to help. She has a strong desire to be useful, and for people to understand her intentions. This translates across really well and you write it beautifully. Here, it was really interesting watching her run in to people who did not necessarily understand her, but were here for political reasons. What impresses me is how well you write her being a bit adrift in this thread - she came in expecting and intending to learn and watch, then she moved away from her plan and she forwarded herself for different roles. By the end of the thread, she seemed to have a better grasp of the Council and I wonder if the vote would have been different had she simply put herself forward for the Academic, not engaged in the early part. You played that growth in understanding and awareness really well and it was beautifully portrayed! . Enjoy your well-earned rewards!

Oram

Overview

Poor Oram what a baptism of fire!! His first Council meeting, he's tired, he's grumpy, he's got a scowl and then .... it's a bunfight! You write Oram in a way that is just a pleasure to read. You move each post forward leaving us in no doubt about what Oram is thinking and feeling, yet there's always attention to small details too. Needless to say, I think our new Chief Ranger is not impressed with Council Meetings and I look forward to his next one!! Enjoy your rewards! Consider what you'd like to do re: Slags Deep - there was an agreement for an expedition there and I believe Oram was rather in charge of it.

Balthazar

Overview

Poor Balth - he does insist on overstepping rather stupendously, doesn't he? I love how true to him you are and how he means so well. Here, he was genuinely trying to help make things better, but managed to instead irritate his senior officer. Unfortunately, after that first post, Balthazar didn't actually do anything - he didn't say anything, but all the rest of your posts were purely Balth reflecting on what he saw. That makes knowledge difficult to award. Kudos on writing 5 posts where Balth said and did nothing, that said - that must have been tricky! Enjoy your rewards!

Doran

Overview

Congratulations to the new Devout of Scalvoris! You played Doran very well here - he's always calm and logical and considered in what he does. I have to admit, you surprised me by volunteering for Devout - I thought he'd go for Academic, but as soon as he went for Devout I saw that it made much more sense. Doran has become a very good negotiator and is something of a balanced and considered viewpoint. I love how well you write him, how you balance his thoughts and his actions. Here, he was written excellently and I hope you enjoy your well-earned rewards.

Kura

Overview

This is an interesting situation -it's rare that Kura makes a political mis-step, but I think this one was entirely in character and entirely what she would do. I love how true to her you are, how consistently you play her. It's really hard to play someone so old, but you do it with skill. Where do we go from here? Up to Kura! Enjoy your rewards

Nir'wei

Overview

I love Nir he's all broody and the kapow. He was interesting here, he's living so much in his own head that he feels like he's not part of things going on around him, sometimes, and that was evident here. He was passionate about those aspects he truly believes in, and he voted on every motion, but more than in other threads, here I saw Nir retreating from reality a little. It is intriguing how you write him, and I have to say, he's great fun. Enjoy your very well earned rewards!

Darius

Overview

What I find most appealing about Darius is how passionate he is about all things Scalvoris. He came, he spoke up and he was absolutely determined to put across the viewpoint of the "common man", so to speak. I enjoyed the way your wrote him doing that, how he followed the argument and tried his very best to be level-headed and fair, but how equally he stood firm in his viewpoint. Lovely writing, excellent character portrayal - enjoy the rewards!

Overview

Bao is, as always, adorable here - but I get the sense that he's also "toughing up" a bit. He made some tough calls here, and he listened to some strong arguments. He doesn't like conflict, and he didn't enjoy this experience, but there is very much a sense of him having to get on with it. You write him beautifully, well done. Enjoy your rewards!
