Smooglenuff Wine: Wine Sabayon

Image
Ashan 55, Arc 722

The beginning of Ashan had still been quite cold, even on Faldrass where it was usually a little warmer than it was on the main island, but sometime after the 30th, the temperatures had finally increased, and spring had arrived for real. In Beacon as well as in other places that had farmland, people began to sow the crops for the arc. Barren trees finally began to sprout new life, fresh green grass began to replace the brown, dry grass that was left over from the arc before, and flowers began to appear, first only a handful, and then more and more, and on top of that, birds could be seen everywhere, singing a joyful song.

In the Smooglenuff Barony, people were getting ready for the work outside as well. The arc before, Devin had begun to establish a small vineyard for his future Smooglenuff Wine. With the help of a couple of trainees from Cally’s, he had planted grapevines. It would be a while before they could finally start making their first wine – grapes were usually harvested in fall – but there was quite a bit of work that already needed to be done before that, and thus he had invited his previous helpers to Faldrass once more. They wanted to learn how to make the wine and knowing how vineyards worked was a very important part of that.

When the trainees from Cally’s had been on Faldrass the last time, Devin had prepared a wine-themed lunch for them, in order to get them into the mood for the work that lay ahead and inspire them. There would be no lunch for them this time because they would arrive in the afternoon, and you didn’t eat lunch in the afternoon, but he had decided to serve them a sweet little treat that contained wine before they headed to the vineyard – wine sabayon, with white wine.

For that reason, he was standing in the kitchen, wearing a frilly red and white apron in order to protect his expensive clothes, the ingredients that he needed on the table in front of him. He knew that he could have asked Mrs. Adams, the head cook, or one of her assistants to help him – he could even have ordered them to do the work instead of him because he was their Baron – but he loved cooking and making stuff for people and bringing a smile to their faces.

Wine sabayon was a comparatively simple dessert that only required a handful of ingredients – egg yolks, egg whites, white wine, powdered sugar and lemon juice, but Devin decided to consult a cookbook regardless, because he wanted to get it just right. Anything but utter perfection just wouldn’t do when it came to such an important project in his opinion.

The recipe said that he should whisk the egg yolks, the egg whites and the sugar, so he put them all into a bowl in order to do just that which was not his favourite part of cooking, to be honest.

Whisking for an extended period of time made his wrist feel kind of weird which was why he briefly turned to one of the kitchen aides that was shaping dough into rolls for dinner and asked, a curious expression on his face, “Provided that you are a sufficiently skilled engineer, do you think that you could build an automatic whisking machine? Wind is used to power windmills, but what about other things?”

“Your Grace?” the kitchen aide, a fluffy white cad cadouri asked and blinked, a confused expression on her face.

“Do you that think that it’s possible to make an automatic wind-powered whisking machine to replace the manual whisks that we have now?” Devin clarified and looked at her expectantly, whisk in one hand and bowl in the other hand.

“I suppose”, she decided after she had given the matter some thought. “But there is no wind in the kitchen, so the machine wouldn’t work very well in my opinion, unless you set up an outdoor kitchen, and even then, you’d have to wait until there actually is wind.”

“Right”,
Devin replied and nodded, momentarily surprised by the girl’s thorough and reasonable answer before he finally started whisking, with a lot of vigor, as if he wanted to prove that he was stronger than those eggs and just as powerful as a wind-powered whisking machine!

One he had whisked the mixture sufficiently, Devin added a certain amount of delicious and expensive white wine (He had to resist drinking it, even though he knew that he needed it for his dessert, because he absolutely loved wine!) as well as a tablespoon of lemon juice. Having done that, he simmered the mixture over boiling water which involved more of one of his least favourite aspects of cooking – whisking. In fact, he was supposed to whisk the mixture constantly until it thickened which took quite some time.

He did that even though he didn’t like it, and then he shook his wrist and rubbed it a bit before it felt kind of unpleasant.

Finally, he filled the mixture into a number of small and pretty crystal bowls though – and took one of them himself in order to give it a taste. He always taste-tested his food rather than relying on his totally amazing good cooking skills, even though he could probably have done so. He really loved eating his own food – before anybody else had a chance to do so, to be exact.

It was … it was, he decided as he put the spoon full of wine sabayon into his mouth, nice and foamy and nearly seemed to melt on his tongue. In short, it was exactly what the cookbook said a good wine sabayon should be like. Except that it looked kind of boring. He wanted his guests to already be absolutely excited when they saw their sweet treat though!

He looked around the kitchen, wondering what he could use to improve his wine sabayon. There were the rolls that the cat cadouri was still … rolling (She smiled at him when she noticed that he was looking her way.). Those, he decided wouldn’t do. He didn’t think rolls with wine sabayon would be particularly tasty, especially if the rolls were made with salt rather than sugar. There were also sausages. They were red which made Devin think that they were probably spicy. Wine sabayon with spicy sausages would probably just give the trainees heartburn!

Finally, his gaze fell on something that would likely complement the taste of the wine sabayon well – and go well with the yellowish-white color on top of it. His eyes abruptly lit up!

“Can I have those, please?” he asked the cat cadouri and pointed at a bowl that was filled with walnuts. “Oh, and those. I’d like those as well, if you don’t need them”, he added and pointed at a few strawberries.

The cat cadouri raised an eyebrow slightly before she nodded.

“Thank you very much”, Devin replied with a radiant smile before he went to work once more. He removed the green parts of the strawberries, washed them and quartered them before he carefully placed them on the sabayon, arranging them in a circle of sorts. The walnuts ended up in the center of the circle, and then he grabbed a few peppermint leaves and added those as well, not because of the taste, but because it still looked a bit boring.

A bit of green was always good!

He had just taken off his apron and was about to head into the dining room to see if the servants had gotten everything ready in the meantime when something suddenly occurred to him. He grabbed one of the glass bowls and approached the cat cadouri that had finished rolling her rolls and was arranging them on a baking tray (with baking paper!) now.

“You gave me such excellent advice, so you should have one of those”, he said. “I made so much that my guests are unlikely to eat it all”, he added when she hesitated.

“Thank you, Your Grace”, the cat cadouri replied and curtsied before she sat down at a table in order to enjoy her bowl of wine sabayon. In the meantime, Devin left his kitchen and made his way to the dining room. He was just walking down the hallway when he saw someone.

A young human woman, blonde and with green eyes, stood there, looking around somewhat insecurely and holding a small package in her hands. When she noticed Devin, she blushed all over her face before she walked up to him and abruptly thrust the package into his hands. “For you, Your Grace”, she said and attempted to curtsy in a somewhat awkward manner. “You always give people gifts. I thought that you should have a gift of your own for a change”, she explained and looked at him shyly and expectantly.

When Devin opened the package, he could see that it contained three little figures made of stones and twigs and moss, with clothes made of felt. They looked kind of like trolls, he decided.

“They are absolutely adorable”, he replied – and truly meant it. Devin liked monsters and such, unless they were the real deal, in which case he was more likely to run as quickly as he could. “Would you like to come with me for a moment, …?” he asked, hoping for her to introduce herself. Sending someone away when they had just given him a gift didn’t seem right to him, even though he was kind of pressed for time, to be honest.

“My name is Maria, Your Grace”, the woman said before she shook her head. “I wouldn’t want to impose on you. I hope that you'll enjoy the figures though. You can put them on a shelf or something”, she suggested before she curtsied once more and eventually departed.

Re: Smooglenuff Wine: Wine Sabayon

“I’m really proud of you”, he heard a gentle voice as he continued on his way to the dining room. His mother had just walked down the stairs from the first floor, where his father and she were living in one of the guest rooms for the time being. Emma Thorn had slowly begun to adjust to life at Smooglenuff Manor and leave the horrors that she had witnessed in Rynmere behind, although she was still overwhelmed every now and then.

“You treat people with kindness, even if they just visit for a moment”, she replied before she wanted to know, “How are the preparations coming along? Are you nervous?”

“Not particularly”,
Devin admitted and shook his head, smirking slightly. “And it’s going well. I just hope that the trainees will like my food, and that our grapevines will continue to grow. We’ve come so far. I don’t want to fail now”, he admitted. Normally, he didn’t like admitting that he was worried, or insecure – he was a vain and proud and greedy priest of Delroth, thank you very much – but with his mother, things were different. He’d missed her so much, and he was so relieved that she was with him now.

His parents hardly ever criticized him. They usually said that they were proud of him and that they loved him, and he knew that they meant it, but he often felt a little bad, regardless. Before the Barony and before he had begun to study medicine, he’d been on his way to becoming a conman.

He rarely thought of it or felt guilty otherwise, but he couldn’t help but realize that he had almost walked down the wrong path now. He was infinitely glad that he hadn’t chosen such a life. He had had his doubts that being a good and law-abiding citizen would work out – he had witnessed too many nice people being taken advantage of, and he didn’t want to ever let anybody take advantage of him – but it had, and his new life was more exciting and amazing than he had ever dared to dream. He had never been happier!

“You’ll do well”, his mother replied, smiled at him and squeezed his hand for a moment in order to reassure him. “I’ll be outside, in the garden. Your father and Marvin are up to something, and I want to find out what it is”, she admitted. Marvin was the head engineer of Smooglenuff Manor. Devin’s father who had worked in construction before his retirement had taken a liking to him even though he had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that he was a talking mouse that walked on two legs.

“Have fun”, Devin replied and waved to her before he finally entered the dining room where the servants were just arranging the place settings and making a few last bit changes.

Before long, Korim, the butler of Smooglenuff Manor, approached him though in order to inform him of the fact that the trainees from Cally’s had arrived and were waiting in the entrance hall. He couldn't wait to meet them!

Skill Review: All Skills used appropriately to PC's level
Notes: I liked the way you opened this thread, with a vivid description of the break of spring from the thaw of early Ashan. It helped set the scene, which is an idyllic one of the Smooglenuff Manor during some meal preparations. The recipe for Wine Sabayon sounds very good, especially the way it was described. It makes me want to try something sweet. You're very good at writing culinary stuff. You should write the menu for a restaurant! That aside, the rest of the thread was a fun mix of scenes. From that Maria girl giving him some troll action figures, those sounded kinda fun, hopefully nothing nasty crawled in with the moss they were crafted from outside...

I like how you incorporated other Barony NPCs and even your NPC parent.

By the way, the automatic mixer idea sounds like an interesting invention. I wonder if Devin is developing an interest in Engineering.

Good writing here.
