Cylus 20, Arc 722
On the 20th of Cylus, Devin Thorn, High Priest of Delroth and Baron von Smooglenuff, was pacing back and forth in front of the entrance of Smooglenuff Manor, wearing a new fashion trend that he had decided to call pirate couture (a tricorne hat, wide pants with a sash, a frilly shirt and a jacket in a vaguely military style) and holding a flower bouquet in his hand. Mrs. Adams, the head cook, would return from her holiday in Scalvoris Town this afternoon, and he had decided to personally welcome her back because he had truly been missing her. He loved spending time in the kitchen and cooking with her!
He had already started to wonder if the ship was late, or if Mrs. Adams had gotten lost on the way to the manor somehow (Although he wasn’t sure how you could possibly get lost on the way to the place where you lived and worked!) when he suddenly saw a figure appear in the distance. He narrowed his eyes. In the twilight of Cylus, it was hard to make out any details, even though there were lamps and such on the manor grounds, but the figure did kind of look like a woman – or a human being, at the very least.
He hesitated for a moment. When he noticed that the figure was waving, he waved as well though, almost overly enthusiastically, before he came closer, smiling all over his face as he did so because it was really …
“It’s really you”, he told the red-haired human woman whose cheeks were a little flushed due to the cold and who was wearing a red coat with a matching hat., stating the obvious, before he abruptly thrust the flower bouquet at her. “It’s good to have you back. I’ve already told one of the servants to prepare hot chocolate for you in case you are cold, and one of the maids made sure that your room is warm, too.”
“How was your trip, by the way? And how’s Anthony, if you don’t mind me asking? Did you have a good time together?” he wanted to know as the two of them walked up the stairs to the door together and went inside where he took his hat off and tucked it under an arm. He hadn’t only asked her how her trip had gone in order to show her that he cared, he was genuinely interested. He could in fact not wait to find out!
Korim, the butler, was waiting on the other side of the door. He smiled at Mrs. Adams and greeted her in a friendly way before he gestured for a servant to take her suitcase and carry to where she lived – provided that she was willing to part with it, which she fortunately was.
“Thank you for the flowers, Your Grace”, Mrs. Adams said and smelled them, smiling slightly, before she replied, “My trip was wonderful. I’d like to thank you again for giving me some time off. Anthony is doing very well. He did in fact ask me to bring you a letter from him,” she continued in a somewhat secretive tone of voice – she had been spending her holiday with her son who studied in Scalvoris Town - and let out a deep sigh. On Faldrass, it was not as cold as it was on the rest of the island, but she was glad to be inside, nevertheless. She had almost forgotten how warm and pleasant and cozy the manor was!
Devin’s eyes widened at the mention of a letter for a moment before he remarked, “Maybe you could show it to me and tell me more about your trip while you enjoy your hot chocolate? If you need some time to relax and freshen up, I’ll ask the servants to keep your hot chocolate warm in the meantime though. There’s a bit of cake as well”, he added. It was not as good as the cake that Mrs. Adams herself usually made, but it was still decent. He made sure that all the food at Smooglenuff Manor was perfectly edible. Even though the head cook had been away, there were other people that knew how to cook.
Himself included.
