[Eureka] The Times They Are A Changing

After the last meeting with Mr Pendleton , Faith had set things in motion. So, now, it was time to speak to the people of Eureka. She had a meeting this afternoon, Mr Pendleton was coming here, but before that Faith had asked Alex to gather together the settlers in the Inn.

Things had been unsettled here, Faith knew, since she had returned from the Barriers, alone. Padraig and she had founded the settlement, but the lack of his presence was keenly felt and she knew, both because she was used to being in a situation where she was in charge and because she understood people at a fundamental level that the people here needed answers.

In truth, they weren't the only ones. She had waited, hoping that he would return, but he had not. There were reasons for that, she knew, and she held nothing but love for her husband in her heart. But, there was a bottom line and that was simple. He wasn't here. She was. Their children were. And, of course, the settlers were. And so, they couldn't remain in limbo, any one of them, and she couldn't ask them to wait any longer.

Looking at the Inn where they held their meetings and so on, Faith felt small. Her thumb found the wedding ring she wore, entwined leaves with the engagement ring nestled above it and she breathed in. That in-breath held a prayer for Padraig that she would see him again - that the children would. But the out-breath was one of determination. There was no question in Faith's mind - she could and would manage just fine. She had no choice, after all. She didn't want to and every inch of her ached with how much she missed him.

It was a punishment more cruel than any she had ever experienced, she thought with a soft smile which gave away nothing of how she felt. Considering her upbringing in the slave pens of Athart, that was saying something. But she was here and she had a job to do.

So, she got about doing it.

Stepping in to the Inn, she looked around and she saw that the people were already gathered. Her memory - granted to her by Vri - was good enough that she could greet them by name, ask after their families, mention small details. It was important, Faith knew, and more than that it made people feel like they were being given individual attention.

It was worth taking the time to do that and so, Faith did it. Each person - there weren't so many of them, all things considered. She'd spotted Alissa, her bodyguard, as she came in and she simply made her way around to her. The issue for Faith wasn't so much the settlers, per se, but the Quacian refugees who seemed to think that she was some kind of spiritual leader. It made her uncomfortable, but that was what they needed to do.

So, she said nothing more, and simply greeted each of them in the same way as she greeted everyone else.

When she was done, she moved and stood next to Alissa. She was short and hard to see, so Faith moved and sat on the bar. People were sitting here, either on chairs or on the floor, and so they could see her then. Looking around she considered that it was just like teaching a class. . Alissa sat next to her and what Faith spoke, Alissa signed in the Common Sign which had been used more and more in Eureka.

"Thank you all for coming," she said. "I'd like to talk to you about Eureka and where we're going to go." She smiled brightly. "The short answer is that we're going to undertake a very exciting project. But the longer answer, well, let me take a moment and I'll explain."

They looked at her and Faith considered as she stood there, that there was a time when a crowd like this would have simply terrified her. Now, however, she was comfortable with that. Faith sat on the bar and looked at the people here and she smiled slightly. There were all sorts of ways in which she was used to leading people, but if there was only one thing that she knew about leadership, it was simply that she always spoke the truth to the people she was in charge of

"As you know," Faith said, her voice calm and she used the skills she had developed as a teacher to make sure that she was heard throughout the room. "things have changed for us, a little. Padraig is not currently here, which has a knock on effect for all of us. However, we are a community, and that means we are more than one individual. In Padraig's absence, I'm going to ask Marnie to take on the oversight of what we're pursuing." People looked at Marnie, the young woman looked rather surprised, but pleased and she nodded, firmly.

"Thank you, Marnie. We'll be working together, you and I. I'm going to be heading up our medical research, with Marnie overseeing our science. Then, I'm going to ask Gus and Jai'den to head up our resources. Mining, digging for history, that kind of thing. There are resources and stories aplenty to be found, I'm sure of it." Faith smiled. Jai'dan gave a low bow to her, and Gus nodded eagerly.

"Then, I'm going to ask Poppy to head up our hunting and gathering. Work with Anshwar who will help with the gardening side of things. I'm going to be working with you, also," she smiled at them and they nodded, happy to have roles.

It was more strictly organised, perhaps, than she and Padraig had envisioned, but Faith was here on her own and, as such, she needed to lead them her way. That meant organised and structured, every time. It was Faith's way.

"I've got some exciting developments that are going to be happening, but before I go any further," Faith said, looking around with an interested and open expression, "Are there any questions on what I've said so far?"

"Will we all be put into these teams?"

Faith shook her head. "No, and I'm not wanting us to think that we are exclusively doing any one thing. I'm asking these people to head up the way that these are dealt with, to have that focus so that we don't lose sight of all the aspects of what we need. But even they - none of us - are in one 'team'. There are just people who will act as an administrator and have oversight."

That was met well, people nodded their heads. Faith saw the advantage and pressed it. "So, if you're wanting to experiment on something with some unusual or rare resources, you know to go to Jai'dan and Gus. If you need a particular flower or bush, then you speak to Anshwar." THat they would have people to go with their needs, that made good sense to the scientists and there were nods and murmurs of acceptance. Faith smiled and nodded. She was pleased; she had delivered the news of Padraig not being there in the same breath as giving them something they saw positively. That helped, she thought.

"Will there be records kept, a system for this?"

Faith grinned and there were chuckles around the room. "Is anyone in any doubt?" Alex, her assistant, asked and Faith was pleased at the chuckles she heard. They were happy, that was good. "There will be lists, yes. Lists and organisation and no doubt, there might be some colour co-ordination, too." More good humoured laughs, but an undertone too. They were glad she was being pro-active and involved. They wanted that.

"Come on then, Faith," said Eric, "don't keep us in suspense. What's the other news?"

"Well," Faith said, in reply, "I'm glad you asked."

Eric shot her a rare smile and then, she was aware of them all. Every one of them, leaning forward a little. Listening more intently. "I've commissioned the building of a hospital here," she said. "But not just any hospital. It is, in fact, four hospitals, each one a large individual hospital, built around a central hub of research." They looked at her in some surprise, but it was obvious that Faith was far from done. "This will be a place where the impossible happens. We will study diseases considered incurable, surgical techniques to push medicine forward. We will push boundaries."

She went into the detail, then. "One hospital, but there will be four wings. Each 'wing' will be the size of a large hospital and there will be a central hub." There was no need for her to look at her notes, she watched the people, and their reactions. "The four hospitals will be specific and specialised, each one. There'll be a hospital where currently incurable diseases and illnesses are treated and studied, one chronic and long term patients with complex and often terminal diagnosis and prognosis are cared for. Then, a children's hospital for the most complex and difficult children's cases and finally the hospital which deals with magical and military injuries." There were mutterings and quiet discussions, some in more traditional Rharnian language than usual. Faith was pleased to hear that being spoken.

Faith knew when to pause, and let them take it all in. She did that and, when she judged that it was the right time to start again,, she continued. "Each hospital will have surgical facilities, medical wards, everything you'd expect from a hospital. The hub will have research facilities and labs. There will be accommodation for the families of those who stay in the hospitals and therapy rooms for them."

One of the settlers raised his hand and Faith smiled, encouragingly. "I came here to observe stars, not be involved in medicine." He spoke firmly, but still politely and Faith nodded.

"That's important," she said. "Nothing that is existing here is going to be changed. The observatory is there for people who want it, the library and labs, they're going to be there. But this is an addition to us and, I would say, it will be of peripheral benefit to you. Because it will attract people, and investors. Scientists and academics. I'm going to write to Viden, for example, and if they get involved that involves the Academy." There were nods and the man who had asked seemed pleased.

Her silver eyes roamed over the room and then there were more questions. "How many people will there be?" Faith nodded her head. "A lot. But I will make sure that they have accommodation, that it's done in a manner appropriate." They seemed happy to take her word for that; thus far, after all, they had seen her do exactly that.

"Yes?" That was to one of the Quacian refugees who had arrived in Eureka. "Will we be able to help, should we wish it?"

Faith's face showed her pleasure at that question. "Yes," she said, firmly. "I would very much appreciate any and all help which is offered. There will be lots to do, that's for sure." The woman nodded and then smiled. "I will help," she said. There were murmurs of agreement which built into a general consensus and Faith was delighted at that. "I promise you," she said quietly but firmly, "I think this will be a very good thing for Eureka. Thank you all, so much. I'm going to stop talking now, and instead just answer questions indvidually, in case you didn't want to speak out in front of the crowd.

She did that so that people could ask questions in a way that they felt most comfortable. It was something she did a lot and, when she was teaching people the same was true, so she merely applied it here . The Quacian refugees preferred to speak to her quietly, not where everyone could hear their questions and she was happy to do that.

There were many questions, some of which surprised Faith. People who had been at Eureka because Padraig had invited them wanted to know about him, about when he would be back. Faith was honest, while not giving away any personal information. Padraig was not here right now, and no, she didn't know if or when he'd be back. He was alright, she knew, and she believed that the best thing they could do was to simply carry on and hope that he found his way home again. Faith did her best to always reassure, to always be calm and confident. She never lied but, when they asked "but yes, but where is he?" Faith shook her head. "That's his story," she said firmly. "All I'll say is that he is where he chooses to be. All we can do is be here, doing what we do, for if he chooses to come back." They wanted more information, but Faith did not give it. It was private and she and Padraig both were very private people. Plus, her children lived here.

So, the meeting went on and they discussed things. People seemed happy with the new structure she suggested, in terms of there being "leads" for particular aspects and the reaction to the hospitals was positive.

When she left, Faith sent a prayer of thanks to Famula, Moseke and Vri, to the Twins and Ymiden, thanking them for their faith in her. When she could find no such faith in herself, she simply believed in them and, thus far, it had always served her well. She had to believe it would continue to do so.

Because things were certainly different.

Comments: I’m very impressed with all the work Faith is doing for her new medical and research center, and I appreciate that you also addressed Padraig’s disappearance and the way it affected Eureka IC. I’m glad that Faith has decided to move forward even though he’s gone!

The speech that she held was clear and well-structured in my opinion – she has GM Socialization now whereas speaking to such a crowd would have been terrified before, and it is showing. I love how she is addressing different settlers and involving them in her project!

She made the hospital project sound truly exciting. I look forward to reading more about it, and I wish her good luck!

Enjoy your rewards!
