Cylus 24, Arc 722
Approximately ten trials had passed since the wonderful Zana Delroth, the daughter of Devin’s favourite Immortal ever, had moved into the manor, and the son of Zanik was determined to continue to amaze her and convince her that Faldrass was the best part of Scalvoris, because it was. When she had first arrived at the manor, they had discussed a midnight feast, on the balcony, under the star turtle. Devin had already come up with a few ideas back then, but he had decided that he needed to up the ante because only the best was ever good enough – for both of them!
So, he had spent a considerable amount of time preparing, in secret (He could be a pretty sneaky and deceptive individual if he wanted to!). He had been in the kitchen, cooking, he had gathered materials around the house, and even asked one of the servants to head to the nearest beach in order to get something for him. Of course, he had not neglected Zana either, because she was someone that should never have to suffer from a lack of attention in his opinion, just like him. In his opinion, both of them deserved a place in the spotlight – unless they decided to voluntarily take a brief break from spotlighting.
(Devin wasn’t sure if “spotlighting” was an actual verb; but if it wasn’t, he had just invented it, and he felt entirely justified in doing so because languages constantly evolved, anyway.)
Devin had decided that the exact nature of the midnight feast would be a surprise, but the date wouldn’t because not giving Zana time to prepare would be terribly rude in his opinion. So, in the morning, Korim, the butler of Smooglenuff Manor delivered something to Zana’s room that was right across the hallway from Devin’s room. He delivered a very pretty tray made of pure silver that was engraved with pictures of exotic birds. On it rested a fine envelope that was the exact shade of Zana’s eyes. The words “To Lady Zana Delroth” were written on it with golden ink that contained a few flakes of actual gold.
Inside was a cream-colored piece of parchment that contained a message. Devin’s writing often tended to be a bit on the messy side, but this time, he had made a real effort to write beautiful and elegant looking letters, and not smudge his ink. The message said:
Lady Zana,
Be ready for an amazing midnight feast tonight.
Devin
Of course, the letter was not the only thing that Zana could find on the tray because a mere short letter would be utterly underwhelming. There was also a fine porcelain plate that contained a trio of chocolates that rested on a bed made of pastel colored edible flowers.
The first chocolate was square and made of milk chocolate. It had a filling that was a mixture of raspberry, coconut and cocolime, and it was topped with tiny pieces of candied cocolime and raspberries. The second chocolate was a perfectly round ball of milk chocolate with a filling that was mostly made of strawberry puree, with just a hint of balsamico, and it was covered with dark and white chocolate flakes. The third and last chocolate was triangular and had a liquid core that contained a hint of sweet cherry liquor. It was topped with a green leaf made of marzipan and frosting that shimmered very prettily due to the addition of glowing eggs rather than boring normal eggs.
Shortly before midnight, Zana would hear a knock on the door. If she decided to open it, she would find herself facing Devin that looked at her with a radiant smile on his face. This time, the young Baron was wearing an extravagantly cut suit made of the finest wool. It was dusk-colored, and it had details made of Lunar Silk that shimmered in the dark, in different shades of turquoise and green, just like the star turtle that travelled across the sky. On his feet were ankle boots made of blackened leather with a small heel and a subtle scale pattern (a reference to the dragon they had discussed earlier), and on his fingers were rings made of Adamantite that matched the color of his suit.
This time, Devin was wearing very little in the way of jewelry in his hair, apart from a delicate silver ribbon. He had just brushed it thoroughly and added a bit of fine powder to it so that it shimmered slightly when the light touched it, and he had used a subtle perfume that smelled of violets, because violet was one of his favourite colors, and there needed to be at least one aspect of his look that matched his eyes (that happened to be violet).
Should Zana open the door, Baron von Smooglenuff would bow to her, as a gentleman commonly bowed to a lady, and then he asked her in a tone of voice that was filled with promise, with just a hint of a twinkle in his eyes, “Would you be willing to join me for a marvelous midnight feast, Lady Delroth, for a night that is filled with countless wonders?”
Of course, Devin was not the only thing that Zana would find in front of her door. The walls were covered with chains of silver and golden glass that shimmered in the light of the lamps and made it look as if it were in fact raining stars now, and glitter covered the floor, creating an atmosphere that would hopefully seem magical. It would be a mess to clean up, and Devin would likely have to pay the servants extra for the additional work the following trial, but for now it hopefully helped turn Smooglenuff Manor into a true place of wonder.
As it should be.
