The hens clucked frantically as Lei'lira gathered the eggs. One particularly feisty hen even tried to defend her nest by pecking her hand. Lei'lira was expecting this, though, and she was too quick for the fierce would be mother. She yanked her hand out of the way the moment she saw the hen begin her attack. As a result, instead of stabbing her hand with her beak, the hen grazed the skin between Lei'lira's thumb, and forefinger. Lei'lira yelped as sharp pain seared through her right hand. Blood welled out of the small puncture wound. It wasn't the first time one of the hens had gotten her, and it wouldn't likely be the last. Fortunately, Lei'lira knew how to deal with the minor injury.

"Don't think you've won, you little beast. I'll be back for your eggs in a bit." she muttered as she glared at the hen.

Lei'lira took the eggs she had gathered so far, and headed back to her cottage. Shadow greeted her with a plaintive, wistful sound, clearly begging for attention as she welcomed her back. Once there, she set the eggs in a bowl, she picked up the beautiful cat, and cuddled with her for a few trills. Then she set her down so she could see to her injury.

It was an easy matter to deal with; Lei'lira merely washed it well to make certain that there was no dirt in the small puncture wound. She took her time, making sure she got everything out, knowing that if she didn't, even a small wound like this could get infected. By the time she had finished, it had already stopped bleeding. So with that taken care of, she took her now empty basket, and headed back out to the chicken coop so she could finish gathering the eggs.

The hens are getting awfully feisty, and defensive lately. That wasn't the first time that hen got me, and I'm sure it won't be the last, either. Maybe I should let them keep a batch of eggs soon? I could use some more chickens, and that would mean I wouldn't need to buy them. Lei'lira mused while she worked.

She decided against it, though, after giving the matter some thought. With Zi'da approaching, and Cylus after that, the survival chances of any chicks born now would be far less than if they were to be hatched in Ashan, or Ymiden. It would be better if she waited for a better season, even if it did mean she'd need to buy some full grown hens in the mean time.

After she finished gathering the eggs, she went back inside, and counted them. She had plenty for a good sized breakfast, and a decent surplus in addition to what she needed for herself.

I'm pretty sure I remember Ari Lendon telling me that they were short on eggs these days because a fox managed to get into their chicken coop, and kill several of their hens. Perhaps I could trade some of my eggs for some of her milk? They have more cows than I do, so she can probably spare some. With only one cow, I never seem to have enough milk for everything I need it for. Speaking of cows...

It was time to go milk Daisy. If the poor cow had to wait much longer, she'd be in a lot of pain. Lei'lira headed back out, this time to the barn. Daisy looked up when she approached her with the bucket, and in Lei'lira's mind, the cow looked grateful. Lei'lira took the time to make sure her hands were warm enough, then squatted down to milk Daisy.

I think I'm glad I only have one cow, even if I do need more milk. If I had more, then I'd have to milk them, too.

Milking more than one cow in her current condition was a very daunting thought. A single cow to deal with was hard enough. Her swollen belly made it very difficult to squat down at all. Doing so long enough to milk Daisy was painful, and she often had to stand, and rest for a few bits as she did so. Sometimes more than one rest break was needed to complete the task.

By the time she was finished, Lei'lira's back and knees ached horribly, and she felt light headed from standing and squatting so many times. Part of her really wanted this pregnancy over and done with. The morning sickness, the aches and pains, the inability to sleep, and the fuzziness that seemed to surround her were all very draining. But despite all of that, she dreaded the birth of the child she was carrying. What if Drayas wasn't the father? What if it was obvious that he couldn't be? Drayas would be furious, and that would not bode well for her.

With the milking done, Lei'lira headed back to the cottage with the milk. She made herself a quick meal, pausing as she did so to wonder what Lazuli was doing now. How many times had she come in after the early morning chores to cook them both up a simple breakfast? Now there was just one to cook for, since her husband was off in Andaris doing...whatever he did in the city. Lei'lira missed her sister dearly.

But there was work to be done, and Lei'lira couldn't stop to sort out her feelings. After eating, she cleaned up after herself, and got back to work. Once outside, she walked her land, marveling at its quiet beauty. She had bought another half acre of land recently, and she wanted to plan out where the new stables would go. With three horses, an ox, and a cow, her barn was awfully crowded. A stable for each of the horses would help with that problem. The question was; where should they go?

Perhaps I could combine the stables so that the two mares could stay together? Star and Kaiyu would miss each other's company if they were separated. What if I had two stables combined into one for them? Then I could have a third for Darkwind. If built right, I could keep adding other stables onto each as I buy more horses. I should look into building a place for the mares to foal if they run into difficulty, too. she mused.

It didn't take her long to find a suitable location for the stables. They would be near enough to the cottage that they could be gotten to quickly if there was need. But while within sight of the cottage, it was far enough that it wouldn't feel crowded together with the barn, and the chicken coop.

"Oh, hi, Lei'lira!"

Lei'lira jumped at the sound of her name. It was the mailman, and when she realized who it was, she smiled in greeting.

"How are you?"

"I'm doing well. And you?"

"I'm fine." Lei'lira said softly.

"Did you hear about Tristan Venora's play?"

Lei'lira shook her head. A play sounded like it might be interesting to go see, but it simply wasn't possible. It was hard enough to justify leaving the farm for as long as it would take to journey to Andaris and back when it was absolutely necessary, and Lazuli was around to look after the animals for her. But for something like a play? Impossible; especially when Lazuli wasn't here to look after things while she was gone.

"It's called 'A Royal Tragedy." I believe. It's supposed to be very good. One of my cousins saw it, and he said that King Cassander himself was there for the first showing. He didn't see him himself, though, so it might not be true. Still, to be in the same room as the king...must be something, right?"

King Cassander. The man who had tortured her sister. Lei'lira's eyes darkened with emotion, but she said nothing until she could be certain that she was in control of herself.

"I suppose it must."

Lei'lira didn't know if she would be able to stand in the same room as the king without flying into a rage, and trying to hurt him as much as he had hurt her twin. It was fortunate that she wasn't likely to ever be in the same room as the king. Lei'lira and the mailman exchanged news for a few bits before he had to go and finish his route.

Lei'lira was happy to see him leave. King Cassander, and everything to do with him was a very uncomfortable topic for her. It was probably treason just to think ill of the man, but after what he did to her sister, she couldn't help but hate the man. With a force of will, she turned her mind to the next task of the day.

For the past thirty days, Lei'lira had been giving her ewes extra feed to help them gain weight. If they were bred successfully, they would need that extra weight to stay healthy during their pregnancy. Since Lei'lira knew little about the different breeds of sheep, she had relied on the advice of others who raised them when she bought hers. Since she wanted them for their wool rather than their meat, she bought ewe breeds, since they were supposed to produce better wool. She also bought four different breeds; a ram, and some ewes for each one. This had also been the advice of the farmer she'd bought them from. By doing so, she could get a better feel of what kind of wool she wanted, since some was good for clothes, while other kinds of wool were only fit to be made into rugs. Even with the wool that was used for clothes, some was of finer quality than others, and as such, worth more.

There was also the chance that Lei'lira might want to experiment with crossbreeding the different breeds of sheep. Doing so might give her lambs that would be able to produce more wool, or wool of better quality than their parents. For now, though, Lei'lira planned to keep her chosen breeds separate.

She started by clipping Asirax's wool, having read that is was better to do so before breeding the ram. Once she was done with that, she checked his condition. He had gained some weight due to the extra feed she'd been giving him to compensate for the weight he'd lose by burning energy as he bred his ewes. Asirax wasn't limping, so he didn't have any leg injuries from what she could tell. There were no signs of redness or infection between his toes, so he didn't have foot rot or foot scald. And his eyes looked fine to her, as well.

Asirax was healthy enough to breed, so Lei'lira clipped the five ewes she'd bought for him, then left him with them to do his work. Then she moved on to the next ram. One by one, she clipped and examined each of her four rams, then put them to their ewes after clipping them as well.

The farmer who sold me the sheep told me that these breeds were good breeders. Ewes often give birth to twins, and some may even give birth to triplets. So if everything goes well, and they all catch, I can expect at least twenty to forty lambs come early Ashan. Maybe even more. she thought as she brought the wool she'd just gathered into the cottage to be cleaned.

Comment:
You made this job thread very interesting and obviously did some research behind it to make it particularly realistic. I didn’t know all of this about farming and it made it an interesting read for me. You also inserted just enough about your character to make it balance out with all the informational things. Didn’t see any notable structure errors. Good job!
